Since its inception, democratic decentralisation has been a major area of research of the Institute. It includes the studies of the growth, development and performance of Panchayati Raj institutions (PRIs) and urban local bodies, which have been constitutionally designated as 'institutions of self-government.' At regular intervals the Institute publishes status of Panchayats in the States of India. The Institute is also engaged in studies and research on gender justice in the overall context of Women's Studies, for the last several years. Specific studies under this area include: gender justice and role of women in participatory democracy; political empowerment of women; and awareness building among the women representatives. It is also engaged in a sustained programme of awareness raising and training for capacity building and women's political participation in several Indian States.
