• Established in 2011
• Founders are Belgrade medievalists employed at the Institute of History, Institute for Balkan Studies of the Serbian Academy of Sciences and Arts, Institute for Byzantine Studies of the Serbian Academy of Sciences and Arts, the Faculty of Philosophy and the National Library of Serbia
FOUNDING PRINCIPLES
• The Centre is a non-party, non-government, non-profit citizens’ association
• Its basic goals are to develop, advance and popularize academic research of medieval historical and cultural heritage in the wide area of South-East Europe and the Mediterranean, with emphasis on interdisciplinary approach, international cooperation and use of modern technology
MULTIDISCIPLINARY APPROACH
• Devising and carrying out scientific projects dealing with medieval history of South-East Europe and the Mediterranean, by recruiting experts from the various fields of humanities
• History and auxiliary historical sciences, theology, philology, philosophy, ethnology and anthropology, archaeology, sociology, art history, digital humanities…
ADVANCEMENT OF KNOWLEDGE
• Hosting, independently or in cooperation with other organizations, professional and scientific gatherings, councils, seminars, lectures, and other forms of professional improvement in the field of medieval studies
• Realisation of seminars for history teachers entitled “Middle Ages in the Teaching of History” as a part of the programme of continuous professional training for elementary and high school teachers in the Republic of Serbia
DISSEMINATION AND POPULARISATION OF KNOWLEDGE
• Publication of scholarly monographs, source editions, journals and other sorts of academic material from the aforementioned scientific fields
• Founding of the Initial – A Review of Medieval Studies (end of 2011) and publishing of the first two issues (2013 and 2014)
INTERNATIONAL COOPERATION
• Regular scholarly exchange of information with the Croatian State Archives (since 2012)
• Two joint projects with the Department of Byzantine Studies of the Austrian Academy of Sciences– The Phenomenon of the Chancery in South East Europe from
the 12th to the 15th Centuries (thematic collection of papers)
– Document-making Practice of the Byzantine Commonwealth (thematic session of free communications at the 23rd ICBS)
LAUNCHING OF THE JOURNAL
• Established in December 2011 as the official organ of the Centre
• International Editorial Board of 15 members from nine European countries constituted in April 2012
• The first volume appeared in May 2013 and the second in early July 2014
• The third volume should be published by the end of June 2015
JOURNAL’S PROFILE
• International multidisciplinary medieval annual
• Contributions (papers, source materials, reviews, etc.) from all scholarly fields pertaining to the area of Southeastern Europe and the Mediterranean in the Middle Ages (late 3rd – late 16th Century)
• At this moment the only multidisciplinary review of the widest spectrum in the South East Europe devoted exclusively to the medieval research
PUBLISHING PRINCIPLES
• Originality
• Multilinguality – papers in Serbian (and other South Slavic languages), English, French, German, Italian, and Russian
• Double-blind peer review policy
INITIAL 1 (2013)
• 13 papers, 4 book reviews and 2 scholarly activity reports
• Authors included scholars from five different countries writing in four different languagues
INITIAL 2 (2014)
• 13 papers, 5 book reviews and 3 scholarly activity reports
• Authors from ten different countries writing in six different languagues

New Approach (workshop)
– Serbian Monasteries: A Meeting Point of both Cultural Patterns of Medieval Europe (internat. conference)
– The Use of New Technologies in Presenting of the Medieval Heritage (seminar for history teachers)
– Publication of various scholarly monographs/papers about Serbian medieval monasteries
• Completion of the aforementioned projects with the Austrian partners
