Imagine if you could . . . . IntroductionOnline Program unique to IU 10In effort to increase communication and increase education efficiencies we are launching an online program for your teachers, staff, and students. We are excited to engage with you and have provided below our multi-year project training plan to ensure fidelity. Well be providing online professional development, unique Professional Learning Communities (PLCs), and a safe centralized password protected online learning environment through Blackboard, K12. After the training teachers/staff will have access to a connected-personalized learning space to enhance the physical classroom with lesson plans, interactive learning activities, adaptive technologies to provide differentiate instruction, and PLCs provided by CIU#10.Teachers will investigate how the latest teaching, learning and communications models have the ability to increase education efficiencies, including enhancing student achievement and teacher quality, providing district-wide cost savings and more. If desirable, parents can have access to learning environment as a window into the classroom to help with parent and student engagement.

3Facilitates Professional DevelopmentWe can use Blackboard to provide online professional development opportunities and to facilitate discussions and synchronous online meetings. Keeping people off the road helps them spend more time in the classroom.Beverly Addison Technology Learning Supervisor, Cobb County, Georgia

Blackboard recognizes that ensuring continuous professional development can be a challenge. Productivity and engagement benefits sustain and reinforce professional collaboration through organized and continuous professional development.

As Beverly Addison from Cobb County, GA states, they can cost-effectively use Blackboard to provide online professional development opportunities without having to take teachers from the classroom.

Now lets take a look at how Release 9.1 will further help districts cost-effectively deliver ongoing and continuous professional development.

4Enables District-wide EfficiencyWe are putting curriculum online, real-time, all the time. It positions us to be more agile in the way we deliver information to staff and students.Donald A. Jenkins, Chief Information Office, JeffCo Public Schools, Colorado

5Promoting Planning & ProductivityIn the past, access to our curriculum standards and instructional resources was quite limited. By hosting them via Blackboard technology, teachers now have access to them anywhere they have an Internet connection. The end result is improved student performance.Dirk Funk, Instructional Tech. 23VideoCASE STUDY from Notre Dame Preparatory SchoolLocated in Towson, Maryland, Notre Dame Preparatory School may be one of Baltimores oldest prep schools, but that doesnt mean it refuses to embrace the latest technologies, inspiring approximately 750 girls currently enrolled in grades 6-12. In fact, Notre Dame Prep firmly believes that technology can enhance teaching, motivate learning and prepare students to meet the technological demands of college and the 21st-century workplace. Its why NDP Upper Level offers a fully implemented 1:1 wireless laptop environment where teachers and students use laptop computers in their instruction and day-to-day communication. But until last year, the school lacked an effective online learning solution. MiaPotthast Walsh is the Curriculum Technology Specialist at Notre Dame Prep. We had been using an amalgamation of SharePoint, FrontPage and Moodle, as well as shared network drives. It was challenging for the students to utilize so many different tools to share information, she says. As a private school, we need to be competitive from a technology standpoint. We were in our seventh year of our 1:1 laptop program and felt a real need to augment it with a significant online course management component. What they found was Blackboard Learn. Designed to foster active and social learning within a school community, Blackboard Learn promotes teacher planning and student productivity and enhances course monitoring and evaluation.A Truly Blended Learning EnvironmentBlended learning is more than a buzz word to us, says Walsh. We wanted to adapt the manner in which we were teaching our students. Blackboard offers tremendous tools to provide blended learning opportunities. These correlate seamlessly to the methods students utilize to share information in other aspects of their lives. Today, Notre Dame Preps teachers incorporate 21st-century teaching tools into their curriculum with active collaboration tools that include secured wikis, blogs and journals: on-demand quizzes and tests; and embedded video or podcasts. As a result, Walsh says the collaboration between students and teachers has been greatly enhanced and the end results are impacting student achievement. Blackboard Learn gives our students a continuous learning environment where the classroom doesnt stop at the classroom door anymore, she says. Both faculty and students agree that Blackboard Learn has made file and information sharing easy, and the new communication platform has positively impacted the Notre Dame Prep student experience by increasing productivity on both sides. Students no longer have to search disparate teacher websites in multiple locations for the information they need because content is delivered to them in a way that is not only easy to access, but also easy to manage. As DeniseNitkowski 12 explains, It is so nice to have all of my courses brought to me on my home page dashboard, rather than having to visit all of my teachers different SharePoint or FrontPage sites.Melinda Berger is the assistant director of the Middle Level, but shes also a science teacher who considers lab time extremely valuable for hands-on work. Blackboard gives me the ability to save instruction time by placing basic skill development tasks on the system for at-home work, she says. That way, I can devote our classroom time to developing critical thinking. I cant imagine teaching without Blackboard at this point. In terms of recruiting, Walsh says Blackboard has become part of Notre Dames overall technology story. As a preparatory school, 100% of our students go on to college. Part of our message is that we give our girls the technology that they will be utilizing during their years in higher education, she says. But even more importantly, she says Blackboard Learn is changing the way we teach. Its simply more effective. Ive never implemented a piece of technology or software that has received such a positive response from both faculty and students alike.Blackboard Learn is changing the way we teach. Its simply more effective. Ive never implemented a piece of technology or software that has received such a positive response from both faculty and students alike. -MiaPotthast Walsh, Curriculum Technology Specialist
