CEDA:

• is a vital network for the exchange of knowledge and experiences in dredging

• is a centre for communication and training about environmental aspects of dredging

• is a platform for promotion of dredging as a tool for sustainable development

Aims of CEC

• To promote the education and instruction of its members and others in those fields concerned with dredging and dredging-related activities.

• To generate and disseminate quality information on dredging and associated matters

• To develop or contribute to the development of guidelines relating to good practice.

• To stimulate (and join) the initiation of and/or support research relevant to dredging activities

• To be pro-active in providing expertise in relevant policy making activities

• To develop close links with NGOs

Motivation

No one denies anymore that

we all have to take a responsible attitude towards the way we live and we behave in our environment.

Page 8: CENTRAL DREDGING ASSOCIATION - CEDA · • Ch 2: Players Processes and Perspectives • Ch 3: Control, Coherence and Co-ordination • Ch 4: Effects, Ecology and Economy • Ch 5:

Motivation (cont’d)

No one denies either that

dredging and relocating dredged material per definition have an environmental impact.

But as the WODA Environmental Policy (1998) states:… dredging projects can be conceived, permitted and implemented in a cost-effective and timely manner while meeting environmental goals and specific regulatory requirements.

methodologies and guidelines needed

How to achieve this?We in the industry should be able • to predict and assess the effects of a planned

dredging activity in a scientifically sound and reliable and

• to introduce appropriate control measures

This is what the book will provide!

• Revision of original material• Recent advances in knowledge

and technology• New structure

What can you expect from the book?

It is an aid to engineers, government agencies and port authorities, civil engineering consultants and contractors involved in planning and designing dredging works.

• A balanced view• Comprehensive information + sources for further research• It leads the reader through a state-of-the art environmental

evaluation process• It DOES FAVOUR particular approaches • It DOES NOT FAVOUR neither the promoter nor the opponent of

dredging works

Page 15: CENTRAL DREDGING ASSOCIATION - CEDA · • Ch 2: Players Processes and Perspectives • Ch 3: Control, Coherence and Co-ordination • Ch 4: Effects, Ecology and Economy • Ch 5:

www.dredging.org

What should you NOT expect from the book?

It DOES NOT prescribe specific environmental controls.

The Book in practice: “Health warning”

Take special care in particular when setting environmental controls.

Use the “framework”, consider local particularities and apply it to the local conditions.

= framework + case studies

The golden rule of setting environmental controls:

Promoter/Authorityshould set local limits and preferences according to local environmental conditions and sensitivities

Contractor/operatorshould be allowed to operate in any reasonable manner provided environmental goals to be met
