the benefit of this unique, mature property.
Inside the tasting room a long narrow tasting bar is offset by high
ceilings, creating a spacious feel with lots of natural light, and plenty
of gift items from cookbooks to clothing to pre-made gift baskets.
There are also views down to the barrel storage area.
Cellar360 Paso Robles offers multiple tasting options. You can
choose to focus on Paso Robles via their standard tasting which
includes five different local wines. Or, you can expand your palate

LAETITIA ESTATE
Unity of Purpose from Field to CellarA longstanding partnership between a winemakerand ineyard manager produces phenomenal results
In wine, as in life, the best things take time. Such is the story behind the pnership that produces Laetitia Estate Vineyard & Winerys consistently extraordinwines. President and Winemaker, Eric Hickey, and VP of Vineyard Operations, LBozzano, have cultivated a longstanding collaboration that carries Laetitia withrough from first leaf to the last bottle on the line.
Beginning with his hands-on training in Laetitias cellar over twenty years Eric Hickey has had ample time to discover what works best for the quality of estates venerated brand. Staying eye-to-eye with Lino is the most important par
my job, he says, because the interplay between us is what ultimately determithe wines quality. Everything done in the cellar starts with what we do out in vineyard.
As a third-generation farmer, Lino Bozzano intimately understands how evnuance in the field impacts the final product. There is tremendous diversity in small area, from the soils to the meso-climates, says Lino. It's the perfect venueunderstanding what the site means to the wines. Having started with Laetiti2004, Linos intimate knowledge of the 600+/-acre estate includes the clonal prerties, soil types and varietal composition of any given row of vines. This is partilarly important for Pinot Noir, which makes up the backbone of Laetitias progra
While its impossible to name any one facet of the terroir that makes Laetitia PiNoir great, Lino and Eric point to the vineyards soils as essential to their win

complexity and breadth of style. Rolling hills comprised of volcanic
pumice, sedimentary shale and rich, alluvial soils contribute different
characteristics to each of the 57 Pinot Noir blocks. Notes of cola and
earthy spice (volcanic soils) or bright, red fruit (alluvial) are comple-
mented and augmented by carefully made clonal selections such as
667 (dark berries), 2A (sarsaparilla) and 115 (juicy red fruit).
It is the unity of purpose between Lino and Eric synergy with the
land, the fruit, and with each other that makes Laetitia the respected
house it is today. Its partly the beauty of having consistency on the
team, says Eric, but its also the beauty of estate production. We
know our property and our fruit like the back of our hand. Sure,
there are surprises from year to year. But in the end, no one knows
better how to work with our vines than me and Lino because weve
been doing it for so many years.
Since 1982, the Laetitia Estate Vineyard & Winery has produced
elegant wines that champion the exceptional character and diversity
of the Arroyo Grande Valley AVA. Originally founded by an estab-
lished French Champagne house, the Laetitia estate carries on in the
longstanding traditions of Burgundy and Champagne with a focus on
small-lot Pinot Noir and sparkling wines. Valuing legacy, balance,
innovation and sustainable practices from harvest to glass, the
Laetitia team works meticulously from vintage to vintage to ensure
that every bottle of Laetitia wine is as expressive as the land from
which it originates.

ROTTA WINERYHistory, Hospitality and Fine WineBY lisa PreTTY
As the only remaining family owned original winery in San Luis Obisp
County, you can be guaranteed that a visit to the Rotta Winery tasting room
will be filled with history. The charming tasting room, located in Templeton
open daily and the friendly staff is always eager to welcome guests and shar
few stories of days gone by.
Rotta Winery was founded in 1908 by the Rotta Family and Rottas
grandson, Mike Giubbini, has brought the rustic and historic winery back t
life. In 1990, Giubbini replanted the old family vineyard with mostly head
pruned Zinfandel. He remembers happy days working in the vineyard with
grandparents as a child and wanted everything head pruned and dry farme
following the traditional growing techniques of his grandfather.
We want the Rotta wines to reflect the high quality of our old vines
reflect the unique nature of our soils, said Mark Caporale. Along with
partner, Mark Caporale, Giubbini specializes in premium red and white
wines as well as distinct dessert wines. In addition to the estate-grown
fruit, the winery sources grapes from local vineyards. Caporale is a stron

region where his ancestors farmed. The tasting room offers a wide selection of wines for sampling.
With the warm weather, the refreshing Vermentino and Chardonnay
are likely the best place to start. Then perhaps sample some of their
newly released wines including the 2009 Primitivo, 2006 Petit
Verdot, 2009 Estate Zinfandel Port and 2008 Cabernet Sauvignon.
Due to the limed production, the Primitivo and Petit Verdot are
available exclusively in the tasting room and to club members.
The tasting will likely conclude with one of the wines that has
received a great deal of attention, along with several gold medals
the non-vintage Black Monukka dessert wine. The dessert wine is
aged for an extended period of time in small oak barrels to develop a
rich lingering flavor. The wine smells like brandy and tastes likecrme brule in a bottle. Rotta Winery is the exclusive producer of
this rare, sweet dessert wine.
In addition to daily tastings at the historic winery site, Rotta
Winery will also be pouring at Castoro Winery, Saturday July 7th
from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m., during the 46 West Wineries Block Party.
Rotta wines may be tasted along with 13 other member wineries in a
casual mini-wine festival atmosphere. The event includes a catered

Now in its ninth year, the California Wine Festivals three days of
wine events are scheduled for July 19-21, in picturesque Santa
Barbara.
Were expecting another great festival this year, Director DonFritzen said. Our new Orange County California Wine Festival was a
solid hit this year and we expect the same here in our original homebase where weve always enjoyed tremendous support.
Organizers are expecting a wide variety of wineries from everywine region in California to pour at the prestigious three days ofevents, plus regional microbreweries, and even vodka and tequila
tasting exhibitors. Were also working hard to attract the best localand regional restaurants and gourmet food purveyors from around
the country, Fritzen said. Of course, live musical entertainment hasbeen lined up at all three events to provide an exciting sound track tothis outdoor extravaganza.
Emily Kaufmann, the growing companys new Vice President ofFestival Operations agrees with Fritzens vision of a bright future,
Were beginning to attract some national sponsorships along withmore significant wineries and gourmet food purveyors. Our brand
has stood the test of time, and weve always maintained the higheststandard of wine, food and fun entertainment, giving our guests morefor their dollar.
Elite wineries, gourmet food manufacturers, top restaurants andespecially event sponsors recognize the value they receive from
marketing to CWFs high profile clientele in an environment ofprestigious wines, foods and lots of sun and fun. Kaufmann
concluded, Tickets are going on sale sooner than ever before this yearas demand seems to continue to rise for California Wine Festivalsblend of quality wines and gourmet foods, presented in a one-of-a-

WINE COUNTRY DINING
By Allison LeinePaso Robles Inn Steakhouse has been a favorite place for locals and
visitors for more than 50 years, but their history dates even furtherback.
Sitting on top of natural sulfur springs, the El Paso de Robles Hotelwas opened in 1891. Built in the Victorian style, the hotel stood as afortress in the small town of Paso Robles and was the destination of theday. But, the golden era of the El Paso de Robles Hotel and Hot Springscame to an end after a major fire in 1940 burned down everythingexcept the Grand Ballroom.
The Paso Robles Inn was reopened in 1942 as a modern bungalow-style hotel with surrounding gardens. While the inn was rich in Paso
history, it did not maintain its landmark status until the Martin familybought the property in 1999 and restored it to its original beauty, including the original Grand Ballroom. Despite losing one building inthe 2003 earthquake, the property currently offers 30 deluxe spa hotelrooms and six two-bedroom suites, all with mineral spring tubs in therooms.
With an outdoor patio and fire-pit tables overlooking the gardens,
Paso Robles Inn Steakhouse, which was remodeled last fall, is a clasteakhouse with a modern twist. Offering a diverse menu, the resrant has access to great resources, including seafood, produce from Santa Maria Valley and other artisan products. The chefs regularlyto the farmers market to buy ingredients for the recently revised famfriendly menu which offers more options for the budget-conscivisitor. Offering breakfast, lunch and dinner, some of the popular disare the halibut soft tacos, the pulled pork sandwich and the Sa
Maria-style BBQ. The wine list features an extensive selectionCentral Coast wines. In partnership with Tobin James Winery, tfeature a Westside Zinfandel which is served directly from stainless stanks into a decanter.
Check out Prime Rib Wednesday where you can get a 10-oz prrib with potato of choice and mixed green salad for $19.95 or a prrib sandwich and potato for $12.95. And, if you stop at the Paso RoSteakhouse after a day of wine tasting in the area, you will rececomplimentary corkage on your first bottle of any San Luis ObiCounty wine.

Paso Robles Wine Country Will Come TogetherAugust 18 to Raise a Paddle or Local Charities
The Paso Robles Wine Country Alliance
announced that the Wine Country Auctionwill take place on Saturday, August 18th at
Summerwood Winery & Inn. This
announcement comes after the successful
completion of the 30th Annual Paso Robles
Wine Festival, which up until 2012 featured
the Wine Country Auction as an exclusive
dinner. The separation of the Wine Country
Auction from Wine Festival weekend allows
wineries, restaurants and guests to participate
more actively in the auction.
The 2012 Wine Country Auction is
scheduled to take place from 10:30 a.m. to1:30 p.m. under the trees at Summerwood
Winery & Inn, hosting approximately 300
guests. The event will kick off with an hour of
walk-around wine tasting by Paso Robles Wine
Countrys world renowned winemakers. A
four-course gourmet brunch will be prepared
by the regions finest chefs, showcasing a
seasonal farm-to-table menu.
A spectacular live auction benefitting San
Luis Obispo County charities follows where
guests bid on a range of sought-after lifestyle
and wine country items including signed, large
format bottles, exclusive wine country
getaways and luxurious international
excursions. The Wine Country Auction allows
guests and the Paso Robles wine industry to
come together for a fabulous time and a great
cause. Tickets for this event are $250.
In 2011 the Paso Robles Wine Country
Alliance Foundation raised over $80,000,
which was gifted to 13 local non-profit
charities who support healthcare, education
and community service, said Jennifer Porter,Executive Director of the Paso Robles Wine
Country Alliance. We are looking forward to
the change in format as we believe it will create
new opportunities for raising additional funds
for organizations like The Boys and Girls Club
of North San Luis Obispo County, The
Wellness Community of Californias Central
Coast, North County Womens Shelter &
Resource Center, and the Paso Robles Library
Foundation.
At the August 18, 2012 Wine Country
Auction, Paso Robles Wine Country will strive
to top the $80,000 raised last year, introduce
new, high-end wine enthusiasts to Paso Robles

Venteux Vineyards is a dream realized by two families who share a
passion for wine and hospitality. This passion is revealed in each bottle
of Venteux wine and during each visit by a guest to their tasting room.
In 2000, The Stelzle family bought a beautiful piece of property in the
renowned wine growing region, the Templeton Gap. This exceptional
viticultural area produces several of the top scoring wines today.
Winemaker and co-owner, Scott Stelzle, focuses on letting the unique
microclimate of the Templeton Gap shine through in the wines. Using
native yeast and keeping varietal wines 100% pure, guests are able to
truly taste the expression of Westside fruit, including Syrah, Grenache,
Mourvedre and more. Additionally, Venteux offers original blends
which are in complete balance and show much complexity. PMS, ablend of Petite Syrah, Mourvedre and Syrah is a lovely example of a
bold and delicious red wine from the Westside of Paso Robles.
Also on the Venteux property, stands a luxury bed-and-breakfast
inn. Artfully decorated by owner, Bobbi Stelzle, the bed-and-break-
fast inn offers an authentic stay in wine country. Guests are encour-
aged to meander in the vineyards and come back for a wine and
cheese reception in the evenings.
Venteux Vineyards is a charming place to visit during a Westside of
Paso Robles wine tour. Conveniently located near the intersection of
Bethel Road and Las Tablas in Templeton, Venteux is a wonderful p
to start the day. They are open daily from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and ha $5 tasting fee. For more information about their wines and their b
and-breakfast inn, visit their website, www.venteuxvineyards.com.

Zotovich Cellars, a 1,200-case winery, the budding project of SteveZotovich and his nephew, Ryan Zotovich. Their partnership inZotovich Cellars is new, but their shared passion for well-crafted wineand winemaking is not. In 2004, Steve purchased a vineyard alongRoute 246 the epicenter of premier wine grape growing in SantaBarbara County. Ryan obtained a degree in wine and viticulture fromCal Poly San Luis Obispo and began winemaking under SteveClifton, of Palmina and Brewer-Clifton. Steve Clifton coached Ryanon the importance of minimal interventionism in winemaking, asRyan pursued hands-on experience at Palmina, and then later, underthe direction of Kris Curran and Victor Gallegos at Sea Smoke. In thesummer of 2010, Ryan left his position as Sea Smokes Cellar Masterto dedicate his energy and winemaking efforts into the newly formed

remain small. We never want to lose our focus of making high-quality wine. Stylistically, our wines are varietally driven, elegant, balanced and bright. Andrew Murray vineyardAndrew Murray fell in love with the classic Rhne varieties, specific
Syrah and Viognier, in the late 1980s as he traveled through Frances Rh
Valley. At the time he was enrolled at UC Berkeley studying paleontolbut sampling the wines in France there was a shift in his thinking. Capizing on this newfound enthusiasm for wine, he decided to do an internsin Australia at a winery. When Andrew returned to the U.S., he ear
himself a bachelors degree in viticulture and enology from UC Davis, then founded his eponymous Santa Ynez winery and vineyard.
Hes still a champion of Rhne wines though there have been ups downs overall within the industry. I think back on all of the fads and bu
words that I have witnessed in my short 21 years in the wine tradeomanipulation of wines, minimal handling, non-filtered, un-fined, natuno sulfite, organic, Merlot, high alcohol, no alcohol, de-alcoholizing,
says. I have witnessed my precious varieties, Syrah and Viognier, rise fr

obscurity to become a casualty of their own success. And its true that these
varieties are not the darlings of the wine press, however they are the appleof Andrews eye. As they were falling from favor over the last couple ofyears, I did not retreat from my love affair with these wines, rather I crafted
more of them and even purchased and drank more of them. I doubled downin their defense, staying true to my early pioneering vision to become aleader in all things Rhone, he says unapologetically. And that kind of dedi-cation is increasingly rare in todays wine scene.
Much of the Syrah grapes are harvested from stellar vineyards like ThreeCreek Vineyard, and McGinley Vineyard, both in the newly created HappyCanyon AVA of Santa Barbara County. Grapes are typically picked in themiddle of the night nowadays, Andrew mentions. This keeps the grapes
cold, locking in their flavors and staving off the possibility of fermentationstarting too early. In our case, this meant that crews were ready to roll at 3a.m. And you have to be dedicated to your wines to harvest in the wee
hours of the morning in the dark and cold. But thats what Andrew does. When you stop in at the tasting room its all modern, sleek and clean
with white furniture and stainless steel countertops on the tasting bar. There
is a preponderance of red wines to sample and lots of convivial conversa-tion. There are new wine releases available in the tasting room right nowincluding the 2010 Syrah Tous les Jours which was named by Food andWine Magazine as the best American Syrah for under $20. There is also the2009 Esperance, red blend of Syrah, Grenache and Mourvdre. I chose a
bigger Syrah to blend in with the Grenache and Mourvdre, Andrew says, giving this wine a sense of being more profound, as he puts it. Also tastingwell is the 2010 Syrah Watch Hill Vineyard 2009 Syrah Terra Bella Vineyard
with fruit sourced from Paso Robles, a white blend of Roussanne andGrenache Blanc, known as RGB and a dry ros composed of Grenache,Mourvdre and Syrah.
Andrew Murray Vineyards is open daily from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. and is
located at 2901 Grand Avenue, Suite A, Los Olivos. For more information, call(805) 693-9644 or visit the website at www.AndrewMurrayVineyards.com.

With a tagline of Blending Wine With
Philanthropy you know theres somethingdifferent about Carivints Winery in Solvang. The winerys name comes from the Latin
word Caritas and the French word Vin.
Caritas means charity/philanthropy and Vinmeans wine, of course. Blend the two
together and you get Carivints.
The winerys labels are all beautiful paint-ings of rescued animals and other wildlife
and contain stories about each animal on theback label. Profits from sales, as well as fund-
raising events, are donated to various groups
such as Shadows Fund, Return To Freedomand other non-profit groups. Theyve raised
thousands of dollars and continue to push
forward with more programs this spring. But dont let the beautiful labels and char-
itable aspects fool you; the wine is definitelythe focus here. They are a bit different in that
they aim to produce great wine without
regard to recurring varietals i.e. they maynot produce 100% Syrah every year, but
whatever blends they come up with willalways be top-notch. For instance, the
current selection includes a gold medal-winning blend of Barbera and Tempranillothat has aromas of strawberry Jolly Rancher,
pine/cedar, plum and bubble gum, with just
a touch of black pepper. When asked about
this unconventional blend winemaker Fleet
Hamilton replied, It tastes great, so why not?
Were not pretentious, everythings fair game its all about producing great wine, not
paying attention to the rules.
They diverge from traditional tastingrooms in everything from the unpretentious
wine-speak to the activities: Theres a movienight, live music on weekends, board and
card games, and they always have dog treatsand a kid area. When we were planning thetasting room we asked ourselves what has
stopped us from going wine tasting in the
past? It was that we had kids who would
sit still in a tasting room, or we couldnt t
our dog, or that it was stuffy. says PRamos, co-owner. We wanted a place wh
we would want to hang out.
So stop by, enjoy some wine on the pabring your pooch, and meet the own
Fleet and Paul, and the lovely staff: AmanAlex, Beth, Kathryn and Valerie. The
open late every night until 7 p.m. Call that (805) 693-4331 or visit the websitewww.carivintas.com. Wine tasting virg
welcome.

Discoer Oceanic Terroir
By Kim Murphy-Rodrigues
The stunning Santa Barbara coastline has a new jewel in its treasure
chest with the recent opening of the Conway Family Wines Deep Sea
Tasting Room on Stearns Wharf. Located at the gateway to the Central
Coast wine region, the light-filled, spacious upstairs tasting room has
a distinct contemporary feel, with an expansive tasting bar. The
inviting setting features an artisan crafted table, seats and benches
constructed by the Conway brothers out of transformed French oak
wine barrels. Visitors can enjoy a glass of wine out on the venues deck,
which reveals a panoramic view of the Pacific Ocean, Santa Barbara
Harbor, Channel Islands and Riviera, with a glimpse of passing sea
lions and pelicans.
Open daily, the tasting menu features an expansive selection of
award-winning wines from the Conway Family Wine portfo
including the acclaimed Rancho Arroyo Grande Mourvdre an
Deep Sea Chardonnay from the iconic Bien Nacido Vineyard.
