Suggested Donation Items for Shoeboxes:
God uses Operation Christmas Child to touch the lives of children living in dire conditions in over 130 countries.
Brian Gerbutavitch has led Central Baptist’s partici-pation in this mission outreach for the past two years and is again supervising it for year number three. Each year Brian has increased his quota of shoeboxes to fill and for 2014 he is aiming for 200.
It costs approximately $7.00 per box to make it possible to deliver each packed shoebox to a child thousand of miles away. That is $1,400. for the 200 filled boxes CBC plans to send. Brian is available in Fellow-ship Hall after worship service on Sundays and will gladly accept donations for this mission outreach.
Please consider “buying a box” for $7.00
Each month particular items are suggested for donation. For the month of September “toys” are sug-gested. Also previous suggested items can be donated at any time.

PASTOR CAL’S CORNER
Dear friends,
It has been a good summer but I am ready to get back to work. We’ve got some great things planned for the coming months.
On September 7th we kick off our annual Rally Day celebration in morning worship with a series of sermons titled, “The Hope That Emerges From The Darkness.” We will be exploring the great themes and memorable stories in the five books of Moses in the Old Testament.
Worship moves back to the 10:30 am hour and our choir returns to lead the singing. We will celebrate the Lord’s Supper on that first week and set off for another great year of worship and service in our church. Our theme for the church year 2014/2015 will be - Know The Bible, Know God.
We will be using the outline of the book, The Story, to preach our way through the entire Bible in the next year. The Story is the Bible, God's great love affair with humanity, condensed into 31 accessible chapters, The Story sweeps you into the unfolding progression of Bible characters and events from Genesis to Revelation. Using the clear, accessible text of the NIV Bible, it allows the stories, poems, and teachings of the Bible to read like a novel. And like any good story, The Story is filled with intrigue, drama, conflict, romance, and redemption---and this story's true! Get your copy of The Story in the church office for just $6.00 or download it onto your Kindle or iPad from an authorized retailer.
We will also have some Accompanying Bible Studies. They will give us a chance to dig a little deeper into the texts that were presented on Sunday. In Sunday School the Parlor class get us rolling by talking about these great Biblical narratives during the 9:00 a.m. hour. We will also offer two other follow along studies. I’m calling these “Monday afternoon and evening leftovers.” You will get an opportunity to ask questions, discuss the themes and explore the topics with the Pastor. They will meet on Monday afternoon at 2:00 p.m. and Monday night at 7:15 p.m. Although we will be using a study guide to help us explore the topics, the meetings will be organized in such a way that people will be able to pop in and out as their interest and schedule allows. (Study guides are avail-able in the church office for $8.50.)
The other big event for September is our “Back to Church Celebration & All Church Barbecue” on Sunday, September 21, 2014. We hope you will invite your friends to join you for Sunday, worship and then to stay for the Barbecue. It will be very much like the VBS barbecue. It will include good food, lawn games, fun things for the kids, music and a dunking booth where you will get a shot to dunk the pastor and other church celebrities. It will be fun for the whole family. We have post cards for you to hand out or mail to your friends. It is going to be a great day as the picnic runs from right after church until 2:00 p.m.
Finally, I am looking for volunteers who are interested in developing our tech ministry as we move forward with our plans to upgrade our audio visual capabilities in worship. I am looking for people who want to explore the ways we can use it to enhance our worship experience. I covet your input. We are going to meet on Tuesday, September 16th at 6:00 p.m. If you want to be involved but cannot make the meeting, please shoot me an email. Thanks.
I look forward to seeing everyone as we come together for a brand new season of ministry together.
Be blessed,
Cal

Summer’s coming to a close; time to get back to a normal routine. We look forward to those long summer days and warm nights. During the summer we go on vacation, go to the beach, go boating, and, conse-quently, sometimes we miss church. So it’s good to get back together as a congregation and join in praise. How good and pleasant it is when brothers live together in unity! Psalm 133:1 Sunday service goes back to 10:30 on September 7th and Wednesday evening services will also be start-ing up again. Sunday morning Bible studies and Choir are beginning, more opportunities to gather togeth-er in Christ. It’s also an opportunity to donate your time and talents; You could help with Sunday School, Children’s Church, or donate to Operation Christmas Child. Therefore, as God’s chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience. Colossians 3:12 This September take advantage of all the activities we have at Central Baptist. Maybe you have some new ideas for ways to spread God’s blessings throughout the community; we’d love to hear them. Get involved and grow in Christ, in fellowship, in love. Let the Spirit be in you and let it carry you through the entire year and beyond. Don Plante for the Board of Deacons
After taking the summer month of July off, your Board of Trustees had many fall projects to consider at their August meeting. The most significant of these is to select a bidder to do the parking lot crack sealing and coating. This project will need to be scheduled in late September, after the Church Barbecue. Ener-gy One will also clean the furnace and check out the heat traps in October, after the furnace is turned on. Atlantic Elevator, our new service contractor, will also be repairing our chair lift and certifying our elevator in the fall. We are consulting with several roofing contractors to get bids to do the Sanctuary roof. This information will be used when we meet with the Champlin Foundation to secure our roof grant. On the financial side of the plan, our revenue stream is ahead of our anticipated income in virtually all categories! The market has shown strength in our investment portfolio, and the giving has also kept pace. The Trustees will be formulating a Stewardship Plan and Committee in September to launch the 2015 Campaign. Please continue praying for God’s Blessing and keep up the good stewardship and financial support. Yours in Christ George H. Champlin
The financial results for July are very en-couraging! July income was better than planned and expenses were lower than planned. For the year, at this half-way point, we are nearly $5,000 ahead of our plan or, viewed in another way, we have reduced our deficit by $5,000. Thank you for your generous support of all the church ministries! Ellen Rodehorst, Treasurer

Board of Christian Education
“Happy is the person who finds wisdom, the one who gets understanding. Wisdom is worth
more than silver; it brings more profit than gold.” Proverbs, 3:13,14 September is always a busy, yet exciting and rewarding month for your Board of Christian Education. Church fami-lies’ focus sometimes tends to think mainly toward the resumption of Sunday School for their children. However study opportunities for adults are many and extremely varied, both in content and day of the week. Please consult study opportunities in this publication, the Sunday Church Service program and Pastor Cal’s weekly electronic epistle @www.cbc.westerly.org. Also resuming in September-October are the weekday after school programs for our CBC youth and their neighbor-hood and school friends. Truth Trackers, for Grades K thru 5, led by Cheryl Murray, and the CBC Teen Youth Group, with Agnes Trebisacci and Marty Champlin. These dedicated adults are planning extremely varied programs of fun for each age group. Our Board will be working with the Pastor in the coming weeks to initiate Cottage Meetings – unique study opportuni-ties for small groups in private homes. The Board of Christian Education encourages your participation in the myriad of activities available to all, beyond the 10:30-11:30 Sunday morning Service.
Adult Sunday School Class
Culture and Christianity This study is based on Dr. David Jeremiah’s Book – I Never Thought I’d See The Day. The study will focus on the changes identified by Dr. Jeremiah that have occurred over the past fifty years that have affected our culture and the Church. These dramatic changes include the profaning of Jesus, redefinition of marriage, marginalization of the Bible, a growing irrelevancy of the Church, a free-fall morality, and the Islamic theocratic threat to the world. The study will focus on the Biblical response to these dramatic developments. The ten-week study will begin on September 7th at 9:00 A.M.

Prayer Team
The prayer team will meet Wednesday evenings starting at 6:00 PM in September. All are invited to join us. Please check the Sunday bulletin for the date of the first Wednesday we will meet. Please think about joining the prayer team. When I first joined I wasn’t sure how to pray to God except in a private setting. I would like to say a few words about that because the prayer team is supportive. I have learned so much from this fine group of people but the most important thing is how powerful prayer is. Prayer is a very powerful tool in my life and I know that I would not be in the shape I am today without the prayers of my Christian Family for which I am thankful. Deb Plante
UNITED IN THE SPIRIT
Acts 2:1 – The disciples were all together in one place Acts 1:8 – Jesus said, “You will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses to the ends of the earth” (TNIV)
The event on the church calendar called Pentecost Sunday has never been something that caught my attention in the same way that Easter and Christmas do. At least until this year when Pastor Cal preached a sermon about Pen-tecost being the birthday of the church. When Cal said this, I became more alert and sat up a little straighter in my pew seat because after all, who doesn’t enjoy a Birthday Party? I looked around expecting to see balloons, stream-ers and a birthday cake; but alas, such was not the case. I then began to realize that the birthday of the church is a day of celebration because of what it symbolizes. Paul in his letter to the church at Ephesus says in Ephesians 1:13 “When you believed, you were marked in Him with a seal, the promised Holy Spirit.” This is the symbolism of Pente-cost as the Holy Spirit descends on us from above, calling us to go out and witness for Jesus Christ to a troubled world and people. Robert H. Schuller offers the following thought about the empowerment of the Holy Spirit: “God doesn’t just need people with academic degrees. He needs willing hearts. He needs people who are empowered by the Holy Spirit to share the Good News and offer a helping hand to a world in need. God needs you and me to take the message of God’s forgiveness and restoration through Jesus Christ to every individual, family, community, and nation.” And then we read the thought of Elizabeth Sherrill, a Guidepost Devotion writer when she writes:
On Pentecost Sunday, we read the account in Acts of the once confused and frightened followers of Jesus empowered by the Holy Spirit to preach, heal and carry the glad news of His salvation to the ends of the earth. But Pentecost is not just a Sunday. Pentecost ends the fifty-day Easter season, making way for the six-month season after Pentecost, the longest in the year and, for me, the most challenging because after Pentecost the story is open-ended. After Pentecost the story is still being written. For the twenty-six weeks after Pentecost, the Word asks what I am doing with the Spirit’s gift. I’m uncomfortable with the second half of the year. Me, carry the sacred story forward? Me, become Jesus’ hands and feet and voice? How can I? How would I know His will? How would I find the strength? By coming together, the Word tells me on Pentecost, with other believers. Pentecost is the birthday of the church, that great body assembled “from every nation, from all tribes and peoples and languages” (Revelation 7:9, (NRSV) On Pentecost I renew my commitment to church attendance and to joining with fellow believers wherever I can. It is when we gather all together in one place that the Sprit gives us wisdom and power. It’s from that place that He sends us out, as He sent the disciples on Pentecost, to carry His blessings to the world.
It is so easy to lose our spiritual focus and energy to secular activities that surround us all week long. We need to look upon each Sunday as a personal day of Pentecost for all Christians when the Holy Spirit within us re-energizes us to meet the challenges of the week ahead. Let us join together all in one place next Sunday and each Sunday in faithful worship to Him who empowers us to be His witnesses to the ends of the earth. John Macomber

In The Spotlight

Dale and Scott Rahl
To celebrate retirement from long and productive careers Scott and Dale Rahl spent two weeks in July on Maui. Not only did they enjoy the beauty of the island but also, for the first week, the company of their son Dan who chauf-feured them to the spots he particularly loved. Scott retired a year ago; Dale, retired from teaching, is enjoying her first August ignoring all the back-to-school rituals. They both appear well adjusted to being retired with Scott's com-ment," best job I've ever had" saying it all.
Scott was born in Providence, grew up in Greenville, R.I., and was in the first graduating class at Smithfield High School where he played goalie for the soccer team, first base for the baseball team, and forward on the basketball team. His achievements in baseball won him a scholarship to the University of New Haven where he majored in his-tory and graduated with a Bachelor's in Liberal Arts degree. His first job was playing first base in Oneonta, New York, for the New York Yankees. Baseball brought him to Cape Cod to play in the semi-pro league as well. He spent a couple years with the 3M company and then 38 years as a pharmaceutical rep with Johnson and Johnson. His primary area was Rhode Island and Connecticut.
Dale was born in New London and grew up in Groton. She went to Fitch Jr High and graduated from Fitch Sr where she was a cheerleader, an office worker, and involved in all the activities of high-schoolers. She graduated from Southern Connecticut State University with a BS in Elementary Education. Her Master's degree is an MA in Teach-ing earned at Connecticut College. The Groton school board hired Dale right out of college where she taught at Cut-ler Jr. High, Mary Morrison, Claude Chester, and back to Cutler teaching math to 6th and 7th graders. In the midst of her career she stayed at home for 12 years with the three children. It was fun to "talk school" with Dale since I worked in the same system for many years.
Hard to believe, but the Rahls first met at a water fight, the (mostly) boys of U. of New Haven against the (mostly) girls of Southern Connecticut. On meeting Dale later, Scott remembered her as the only one with a squirt gun; eve-ryone else had buckets. Scott was the driver when his roommate dated Dale since the roommate had no li-cense. But Scott won her, and their marriage took place 42 years ago at the Groton Heights Baptist Church.
Their three children are all boys. Matt, the oldest, is a special education teacher at Ledyard Middle. He lives in Pawcatuck with his wife Sara, employed at Monsanto. Pete, who lives in Natick, MA, is a senior scientist for a bio-tech company, and his wife Jackie is a veterinarian at Tufts University. Dan, who is Pete's fraternal twin, teaches business courses at Stonington High and lives in Westerly. Adding greatly to the joy of retirement are three little grandchildren, Sydney (4), Lindsey (2), and Kyle(4). These little ones get a lot of attention from their grandparents whose goal is to spend part of one day a week with each individually.
Scott's interests center about music and musicians of the 60's and 70's (the Beatles, the Eagles, Beach Boys, Linda Ronstadt, Led Zeppelin) whom he researches. He is a self-taught guitarist playing a prized 12 string guitar with six other men in a neighbor's house. He says the sessions can go on for five or six hours. Scott plans to add kayaking to his regimen of walking and working out at the Y (where he sees Pastor Cal). He has had twelve surgeries so he selects activities thoughtfully. Dale is working on her new schedule which will include meeting with old friends for breakfast, yoga, net-flix, volunteering, stepping up her reading, and arranging happy times with Sydney, Lindsey, and Kyle. A trip to Prince Edward Island and Nova Scotia is next on the travel schedule.
Both of the Rahl's grew up in Christian homes, Scott at Greenville Baptist where our own Paul Johnson's father was a beloved pastor. Dale grew up in the Swedish Evangelical Covenant Church. Because of several moves, they have been members of the Poquonnock Bridge Baptist and Union Baptist of Mystic churches. The best clue I could get as to their choice of Central Baptist when they arrived in Westerly was that John and Donna Freeman recom-mended it. John was a deacon at Central and is Dale's younger brother. It was a sad day for us when the Freeman's moved to Vermont. A much happier day occurred on June 8, 2014, when Scott and Dale became our newest mem-bers.
Central Baptist Church of Westerly Page 8
Growing up in a Christian home, Sunday school was the highlight of my week. Our teacher was a gentle lady who taught us how to sing “Jesus Loves Me” and paint Easter eggs. We gathered around her at cir-cle time and listened in awe as she described Joseph’s multi-colored coat
and how Jesus turned water into wine. I loved Sunday school as a child and now that I’m an adult, I still feel the same way. This is why it saddens me that attendance is on a steady decline. Not all churches offer Sunday school clas-ses anymore, and the few that are running may soon stop. I’m glad, however, that the one where my kids go to have no plans of closing down. I believe Sunday school is important when raising little young believers and here are some reasons: 1) It helps children make friends This is perhaps the
best, safest place for a child to find a friend. It teach-es God-centered values, which makes an ideal envi-ronment for nurturing friendships that stand the test of time. My twin daughters met their best friends at Sunday school, and I couldn’t wish for better compa-ny for them to hang out with.
2) It cultivates active participation in church tra-ditions. The gospel is taught in creative, age-appropriate ways so that children develop a deeper understanding for the Bible and have fun at the same time. My friend proudly shared that his ten-year-old initiated saying The Lord’s Prayer with her. A neigh-bor’s nine-year-old happily sings along to the praises during worship.
3) It fosters a deeper relationship with Christ. Songs taught in Sunday school are more than just children’s rhymes. They relay the message that God’s love is unconditional; it’s their refuge and solace when beset with troubles. When our kids commit mistakes and fall, they know they can rise again because God’s love doesn’t falter. As parents, there’s no greater comfort than knowing our children paths are rooted in God’s protection and favor.
4) Students are less likely to stray. Studies from several universities and research groups show that regular attendance to a “faith community” yields adults who live longer, happier, and healthier lives. They’re less inclined to experiment with drugs, alco-hol, or tobacco and have a higher tendency to value religion, education, and family.
5) Students are taught to live together in harmo-ny. Sunday school is a melting pot of races, classes and cultures. Children are taught to respect and ap-preciate the differences in background and opinion, and live with them in peace and harmony. For just an hour every week, you and your family get to enjoy a lifetime of benefits. If all families brought their chil-dren to Sunday school and supported the church and lay volunteers, children would grow up to be compas-sionate, God-centered adults.
It’s my fervent wish that these classes are made avail-able to all kids around the globe so everyone will experi-ence the wonderful things that we do. And who knows, maybe our dreams of a better world will finally come true. Written by Emmy, a free-lance Christian writer

Come early to meet the teachers and to enjoy a drink and a breakfast treat.
We have classes for all ages from nursery right up through adult. Bring your kids and stay for one of the adult classes if you like.
The kids will receive a great foundation for their faith as they hear stories about people like Moses, David, Ruth, Peter and Mary and as they walked with God.
You do not need to be a member of the church to attend our Sunday School. So come and invite your friends.

Truth Trackers Returns on Friday, October 10th
Coming this Fall You will have the opportunity to gather with friends from church in an informal setting with Pastor Cal. It will be a time to ask questions or share your thoughts about issues of faith, things happening at church, things you would like to see our church doing, and the needs you see in our local community.
We want to hear what you believe are the most important issues that we need to address at church in the coming year. We hope to identify top-ics for future Bible studies and uncover areas where you feel we need to be engaged in as we reach out to do mission work in the community.
We hope everyone will take advantage of this opportunity to chat with Pastor Cal in one of your neighbor’s living rooms this fall. We promise the gatherings will be no longer than 90 minutes and feature light re-freshments.
Watch the mail for your invitation to participate and a complete listing of the cottage meetings sites beginning the end of September.

Library News New Additions To The Library
Christian Living Firsthand: Ditching Secondhand Religion For A Faith Of Your Own - Ryan & Josh Shook Ryan and Josh, sons of a well-known pastor and author, detail their search for a faith of their own, one that isn’t the faith of their parents or church. They raise difficult questions that only are answered by an encounter with God’s word. The authors encourage young adults to discover a true relationship with Jesus. While directed toward young adults, the book presents chal-lenging issues for believers of all ages and Christian experience. Walking With God Through Pain and Suffering – Timothy Keller The author addresses the issue of pain and suffering in this life. “Eventually the lights of our lives – love, health, home, work – will begin to go out. When that happens we will need something more than our own competence and power.” The author presents Jesus as the light for one’s periods in “dark places” and the One to turn to when we are tested through pain and suffering.
Religion On God’s Side: What Religion Forgets and Politics Hasn’t Learned About Serving The Common Good - Jim Wallis The author presents a view of how Scripture and political issues relate to each other. He argues that an active Christian faith and the realm of politics can work together to provide for the “common good” of all, fulfilling Biblical commands to love one’s neighbor as one’s self and to care for the downtrodden and outcast of our society.

Have You Thought About
Joining Our Church?
Jesus calls us to follow him. Upon baptism, we become a member of the body of believers known as the Church. Although we are part of the larger body, we are encouraged to seek out a local church where we can be nurtured and encouraged in our faith. The local church also gives us a place where we can serve and use our spirit given gifts. When you join the local church, you are affirming the fact that God has called you there and that you believe in the ministry and want to be a part of it. If you haven’t done so already, we’d love to have you as a member of our church. Speak to Pastor Cal if you want to know how you can
become a member of Central Baptist Church.

Two ways to help Central Baptist receive a few dollars by using the internet to search and/or shop.
Goodsearch: Search the Internet with our patent-protected, Yahoo!-powered search engine (just like you’d search on any other search engine), and we’ll donate about a penny for nearly all searches to your selected cause.
Goodshop: Shop at one of our more than 2,800 participating stores (from Amazon to Zazzle) and a percentage of what you spend will be donated to your cause at no cost to you. Goodgames: Play fun and entertaining games to support
your favorite cause! When you play any combination of our goodgames three times, we’ll donate a penny to your cause.

SMILES AND SO FORTH Humor, Wisdom, Poetry, Quizzes, and So Forth By Dorothy Marra
When you turn
to God, you
discover He has
been facing you
all the time.
I’ve never made a fortune And it’s probably too late now. But I don’t worry about that much I’m happy anyhow. As I go along life’s journey I’m reaping better than I sowed. I’m drinking from my saucer ‘Cause my cup has overflowed.
Ain’t got a lot of riches. Sometimes the going’s rough. But I’ve got a kid that loves me. That makes me rich enough. I just thank God for blessings, And the mercy he has bestowed. I’m drinking from my saucer ‘Cause my cup has overflowed.
When things were going wrong, My faith got a little thin. Then all at once the dark clouds broke And the old sun shone again. So Lord, help me not to gripe About the tough rows I have hoed. I’m drinking from my saucer ‘Cause my cup has overflowed.
And if God gives me strength and Courage When the way gets steep and rough, I won’t ask for other blessings, I’m already blessed enough. And may I never be too busy To help another bear his load. Then I’ll keep drinking from my saucer ‘Cause my cup has overflowed.
THE DECK OF CARDS BIBLE
T. Texas Tyler A young soldier was in his bunkhouse all alone one Sunday morning. It was quiet that day, the guns and the mortars and land mines for some reason hadn't made a noise.
The young soldier knew it was Sunday, the holiest day of the week. As he was sitting there, he got out an old deck of cards and laid them out across his bunk. Just then an Army Sergeant came in and asked, "Why aren't you with the rest of the platoon?" The soldier replied, "I thought I would stay behind and spend some time with the Lord." The sergeant said, "Looks like you're going to play cards." The soldier said, "No sir, you see, since we are not allowed to have Bibles or other spiritual books in this country, I've decided to talk to the Lord by study-ing this deck of cards." The sergeant asked in disbelief, "How will you do that?" "You see the Ace, Sergeant, it reminds that there is only one God. The Two represents the two parts of the Bible, Old and New Testa-ments. The Three represents the Father, the Son, and the Holy Ghost. The Four stands for the Four Apostles: Matthew, Mark, Luke and John. The Five is for the five virgins, there were ten, but only five of them were glorified. The Six is for the six days it took God to create the Heavens and Earth.
The Seven is for the day God rested after working the six days. The Eight is for the family of Noah and his wife, their three sons and their wives, in which God saved the eight people from the flood that destroyed the earth for the first time. The Nine is for the lepers that Jesus cleansed of leprosy. He cleansed ten but nine never thanked Him. The Ten represents the Ten Commandments that God handed down to Moses on tablets made of stone. The Jack is a reminder of Satan. One of God's first angels, but he got kicked out of heaven for his sly and wicked ways and is now the Joker of eternal hell. The Queen stands for the Virgin Mary. The King stands for Jesus, for he is the King of all kings. When I count the dots on all the cards, I come up with 365 total, one for every day of the year. There are a total of 52 cards in a deck; each is a week, 52 weeks in a year. The four suits represents the four seasons: spring, summer, fall and winter. Each suit has thirteen cards; there are exactly thirteen weeks in a quarter. So when I want to talk to God and thank Him, I just pull out this old deck of cards and they remind me of all that I have to be thankful for. The sergeant just stood there and after a minute, with tears in his eyes and pain in his heart, he said, "Soldier, can I borrow that deck of cards?"

Coming of Age
September is the month we can celebrate me The love of my parents gave me the world to see.
The world has changed drastically in these eighty-some years But God has always blessed me and comforted me through my fears.
I am so thankful for family which always come first Thankful for never having to suffer from hunger or thirst. I have great respect for the good earth and God's creatures If I can stay young at heart I will ignore the aging body features.

Contratulations
A Stewardship
Moment It was Friday and Cindy was off. I was sitting in the office when the phone rang. I picked up and Attorney Matthew Lewis was on the line. He asked me if I could drop by his office. He had something for me. I was curious so I went right over. He asked me to sit down and then he shared a story with me. He told me that we had been remembered in the will of Ruth Prosser. She had been blessed by our ministry and wanted to give something back upon her death. Then Attorney Lewis handed me a check made out to the church for our ministry. Over the years we have been blessed by people like Ruth who have made it a point to remember the church in their wills. This way their giving continues to support the ministry they loved even after they have gone home to be with the Lord. So thank you to all those, like Ruth, who have made it a point to remember the church in their wills. It is very much appreciated. Pastor Cal
