As you read this, we are in the midst of the journey through the season of Lent as we prepare to celebrate again the resurrection of Jesus Christ. There are many
ways to think about this season, but one way is to think about preparing for a celebration.
In my ideal world, our home would exist in a perpetual state of readiness for company. Unfortunately, the ideal and the real are only rarely the same. Therefore, when we invite people to our house for celebrations it leads to a time of preparation.
• It requires going through the things that have accumulated and discarding those that have no useful purpose (the coupon that expired 2 months ago, the wedding invitation from last month, the item a new battery did not fix).
• Things need to be cleaned. The bookshelf is moved and dust bunnies evicted. The cabinets are wiped down and the refrigerator is cleaned.
• Some things need to be refreshed. There is the picture that needs to be hung and the threshold that needs to be nailed down and the doormat that needs to be replaced.
As we continue through the season of lent we may find ourselves approaching our spiritual health with some similar activities. It is a time for reflection as we evaluate the condition of our relationship with Christ.
We need to consider how to create a more pleasing spiritual condition for our celebration. We may begin by asking these things:
• What clutter has accumulated in our lives, in our minds, or hardened our hearts and keeps us from pursuing our relationship with Jesus Christ?
• What needs to be deep cleaned, confessed or thrown aside?
• What needs to be added, freshened up, made better? What spiritual practices do we need to include in our daily and weekly routines to deepen our relationship with Jesus Christ?
Lent may be a time we set aside some routines that were not producing good spiritual habits in favor of other activities that will help us grow to be better examples of Jesus Christ. We may need to discipline ourselves to different activities, different attitudes, different patterns of using our time. We may need to consider adding a new spiritual discipline that will help us identify at a deeper level the sacrifices Jesus made on our behalf.
Up FrontOur preparations will likely be different for we each come to Christ with different journeys and with different attitudes and needs. But joy awaits us at the end of the journey as we celebrate the resurrection of Jesus Christ. Our hope is the preparations we have made will intensify the joy we experience.
Grace and peace,
Off The Shelf Two Novels by Thomas Kinkade
Thomas Kinkade is America's most collected living artist. A man of faith, Thomas emphasizes simple pleasures, inspirational messages, and life-‐af;irming values in his paintings.
The Inn at Angel Island ;inds Liza
Martin arriving on Angel Island eager to sell off the rundown inn she inherited from her aunt and return to her busy life in Boston. Back home awaits an unstable career as an advertising executive and a broken marriage. Angel Island is just one more burden. But as Liza recalls the golden summers of her childhood, she begins to have second thoughts. And she wants to know more about Daniel Merritt, the charming handyman who's helping repair the inn, but Liza doesn't have time for romance... or much else. Sometimes Liza sees her life ;lying by and, at the same time, going nowhere. It may take a band of angels to mend her broken wings and redirect her soul.
In A Wandering Heart, a movie crew arrives to shoot a ;ilm in Cape Light, and Angel Island provides a perfect backdrop. Liza’s inn welcomes the cast
and crew, including the famous actress Charlotte Miller. Charlotte is surprisingly down to earth and is totally charmed by the island, especially the inn, where she chooses to stay instead of at more lavish accommodations. But
one day, Charlotte nearly drowns and is saved by local ;isherman Colin Doyle. Their attraction is instant and undeniable—even though they come from completely different worlds. As Charlotte spends more time on the island, the relationship seems meant to be. They keep meeting up, by accident at ;irst, then on purpose. But Colin believes he has little to offer this celebrated beauty. He doesn’t realize that Charlotte would give up her glamorous life for him and Angel Island, if only she knew his true feelings. It seems only a miracle could bring them together. Then again, with faith and love on their side, Angel Island is just the sort of place where miracles can happen.
These books may be found on the New Book rack in the Library. The books were donated by Cory Spradlin, Julie Miller’s mother. The books have an Amazon rating of 4.8 out of 5.

Unfortunately we did not receive any correct guesses as to the location of last month’s picture, which happened to be in Weber Lounge.
Please take a minute to study the photograph to the right. Your job is to guess the location in the church where this picture was taken.
Again, please send all submissions to [email protected] or call the church of;ice at 217-‐523-‐3639 and make your answer as speci;ic as possible.

Hello, Spring!
We had a great time at the Love & Laughs Valentine’s Event in Decatur. We look forward to trying to bring a similar event to Springfield next year.
Sadly, Valentine’s Day marked the opening of the movie adaptation of the Fifty Shades of Grey book trilogy. Please read Miriam Grossman’s “A Psychiatrist’s Letter to Young People” warning about the dangerous ideas promoted by the movie and share it with the young people in your lives. The neuroscience comment is true for engaging in any type of sexual relationship too soon – “Neuroscience suggests their intimacy could jump start her feelings of attachment and trust, before she’s certain he deserved them. Sex is a powerful experience – particularly the first time.” I am writing this column in the middle of February. I hope the movie has faded away by the time you are reading this. However, young people may be curious and have more access to the movie once it comes out on DVD. So, please use the article as a way to open or resume discussion with young people.

Will March come in with windy weather or will it be calm? Here at Children’s House we are very ready for warm weather. The playroom has been a great place to play but we are ready to get outside for some fresh air!
This month our staff will continue to work toward obtaining their credentials. On March 2nd our center will be closed for a teacher professional day. The morning session will include in-‐service and training. The afternoon session will include time for the teachers to be in the classroom. During this time each teacher will help build their professional portfolio. Together we will plan their future coursework and training.
March also is the month we begin to schedule and plan for our summer program. There will be 20 children in the program from ages 6-‐9. So many fun excursions and in center activities are planned for the summer.

March Song Spotlight CBC In Action This section of the CBN will feature a selection from an upcoming traditional and contemporary service. Each song title contains a YouTube link to the song.
When I Survey The Wondrous Cross
This piece was written and published in 1707 by famed hymn writer, Isaac Watts. At the time, it was somewhat out of the ordinary as the practice of the Church of England was restricted to primarily signing the Old Testament psalms in their public worship. It was the desire of Watts to compose a song that would highlight the signi;icance of the gospel and its ful;illment found in the New Testament. This in particularly evident in Verse 3 of what many consider to be his greatest work:
See from His head, His hands, His feet, Sorrow and love Blow mingled down! Did e’er such love and sorrow meet, Or thorns compose so rich a crown?
The great Methodist hymn writer, Charles Wesley, reportedly said he would give up all his other hymns to have written this one.
Not For A Moment (After All)
Written by Meredith Andrews of Vertical Church Band from Chicago’s Harvest Bible Chapel, the
words to this song tell of the faithfulness of God in our darkest times. Much like the classic poem, “Footprints In The Sand”, the song uses the imagery of a loving Father carrying his children in the
moments where their own strength has failed them:
I was held in Your arms Carried for a thousand miles to show Not for a moment did You forsake me

The many beautiful cards with such loving sentiments from you, our wonderful church family, warmed our hearts and are, still, a comfort to us in our sadness at the loss of my mother, Lillian Solomon.
Knowing you were thinking of us and were with us in spirit shall long be remembered. We are grateful for your prayers, kind expressions of sympathy, and loving support.
Thank you and may God bless you always.
Edna Walden and family
We would like to thank everyone for their support in the passing of Coral (Cory) Spradlin. The family appreciates all you have done.
Julie Miller and family
Our Condolences Our hearts and prayers go out to the following families who lost loved ones during the month of February. Please keep them in your thoughts and prayers following this dif;icult time.
• Coral (Cory) Spradlin(Jullie Miller’s mother)
But we do not want you to be uninformed about those who are asleep, that you may not grieve, as others do who have no hope.
1st Thessalonians 4:13
**Editor’s note: as it happens, this month’s selections from Off The Shelf were donated by Cory Spradlin before her passing. She was a generous and loving wife, mother, and grandmother, and will be missed.
A Note of Thanks

We are one church in two locations, with campuses in Springfield and New Berlin, IL. Together, we are a church family loving God, loving people, and serving the world in Jesus’ name. All are welcome to worship with us. We gather each Sunday to love God in worship at our Springfield Campus (located at 501 South 4th Street, Springfield, IL) at 8:30 am and 11:00 am, and at our New Berlin Campus (located at 600 W Birch Street, New Berlin, IL) at 5:00 pm. When you visit our church you are our guest. Our members and regular worshipers participate in a financial offering during the worship services, but this is not expected of our guests.
Our desire is to be a church that helps people know and experience God in a meaningful way. If there is anything that we can do to help you on your life and faith journey, please let us know.
Where Can I Park? The Springfield campus parking lot is smaller, however additional parking is available along the street (4th street and on Jackson), in the Illinois Bar Association’s parking lot on East Jackson Street, and in the parking lot across from the Illinois National Bank building on South 4th Street between East Capital Avenue and East Jackson Street. (This latter lot will be easy to see, diagonally across from the front of the church as you arrive).
Is Childcare Available? Our nurseries located on the first floor of the building. Our well trained and experienced child care workers and paid staff are eager to care for and spend time with children. We also have Sunday School classes (beginning at 9:45) available for Pre-K children through high school students at our Springfield campus. Classes meet on the second and third floors.
What Should I Wear? There is no dress code at Central. Wear what makes you feel comfortable and to be who you are. Our 8:30 AM worship service in Springfield is a traditional service. The attendees generally wear business casual attire. Our 11 AM worship service in Springfield and 5 PM worship service in New Berlin are both contemporary worship services and most people dress casually. We only ask that you turn your cell phone off or set it to vibrate.
What Kind of Music Can I Expect? In Springfield, the 8:30 AM service music is lead by our Chancel Choir and designed to connect you with God through rich traditions of hymns, songs, scripture and prayer.
Our contemporary service at 11 AM is led by our worship band and features modern worship music. There is a high-energy, celebratory feel to the service and participation is encouraged and expected. Whether we are clapping, singing, reflecting, or listening, our focus in only on Jesus. New Berlin also has a contemporary service at 5 PM and is led by our worship band and features modern worship music.
We provide a weekly podcast of the sermon or teaching message each week. If you feel gifted and called to serve in worship ministry, please contact our Worship Arts Director, Robert Reynolds. Some examples of ways to serve in worship ministry include singing with the worship band or choir, playing an instrument, reading Scripture, volunteering as an usher, running sound and/or media, etc.
