Sr. Mary Rinaldi’sLetter
Dear Friends,
Two years ago, the initial planning committee conceivedthe plan to celebrate the 100 years of service to the youthentrusted to us here in the U.S. In record speed, plans weremade and executed in each corner of our country over thepast year. Each and every time the theme rang clear:
We give thanks for all that has been;We celebrate the present; and
We prepare for the future.
Looking back, we recall our Salesian School students in aCentennial Prayer Contest; holy cards made; and bannerscarrying the beautiful image of Mary and the inscription,“Celebrating Youth, Building the Future” . . . January 31,2008, brought us to Marrero, LA, where a youth rally with1,000 young people prayed and reenacted the Sisters’ arrivalin the U.S. in song and drama . . . March 9, 2008, wegathered in St. Michael’s Church in Paterson, NJ, the firstparish for the Sisters, where we heard and saw the starkbeginnings of our Mission. The city gave us space to displayhistory in images with precious heritage items . . . July 2008found us in Easton, PA, for a Mass and celebration byalumni . . . Summer Camp programs in New York, NewJersey, and Florida gave a day of remembrance . . . InOctober 2008, the annual Partners Circle Dinner in NewJersey was dedicated to the Sisters. Family and friendsgathered around as we sang our anthem: O Qual Sorte . . . InNovember 2008, the Florida celebration took on a Southernflavor as St. Joseph School alumni proudly proclaimed thatthey have had Salesian Sisters for 70 of their 100 years!
Finally, April 25, 2009, arrived with the grand finale inNew York City, first with Mass at St. Patrick’s Cathedral(where our Sisters pray on the cover) and then out on to thevery harbor where the first four Salesian Sisters arrived in1908. We hope you enjoy this special pictoral edition ofPartners in Giving which records one amazing day, withbeautiful photos by Lorraine Corsale and Greg McAleer(even more photos can be viewed on www.731photo.com).
Truly, it took an extraordinary team effort to pull off thegrandest Centennial in Salesian history! Sr. Phyllis Neves, our Provincial, and all the Salesian Sisters extend theirmost grateful thanks to all involved. God bless you!
As you read and enjoy this specialCentennial Edition of Partners in

100 Years of Rejoicing!Sr. Phyllis Neves’ Message
Alook back does more than just tell uswhere we’ve been. A look back remindsus of the goodness of God, how He has
sustained us and loved us. It recalls how, fromvery poor and simple beginnings, God hasworked through us for 100 years, creating manyand varied educational environments whereyoung people can grow in their love for Godand develop themselves as good persons whocan make a difference in this world.
Like St. John Bosco and St. Mary Mazzarello,we want to give thanks to God for 100 years ofblessings received and outpoured in abundance.
In a special way, we want to thank God for allthose who have been, and those who continueto be, an important part of our service to youth. We thank our brother Salesians, our familiesand friends, our faculties and students, our past pupils, and all the members of the Salesian Family.
We offer thanks in a special way to our Partners Circlewho, in their unassuming and generous way, supportand encourage our missionamong the young and havehelped us to nurture growthand new life in so manyways.
We turn to the loving, everfaithful God, and we thankHim for this past century ofour presence here in theUnited States.
We are grateful for the pioneering women whoestablished the first U.S.A. Salesian Sisters communityin Paterson, New Jersey. This humble and poordwelling place laid the foundation for the Sisters’works of prayer and service for youth during these past100 years.
It is with gratitude and joy that we celebrated our 100years in New York City, the place where our Sistersfirst arrived, and we look forward with anticipation tothe years that are yet to be.
We ask God for His continued guidance and blessingson the Salesian Sisters of the U.S.A. and on all thosewho in various ways collaborate with us in makingGod’s love visible to the young, especially the poorand most vulnerable.
May Mary, the Help ofChristians and of all people, open the path that leads usinto the next hundred years.May she continue to inspiremany young women to joinus in the joyful mission ofservice that the Church hasentrusted to us. May shebless us with the couragethat filled the hearts of our
first missionaries so that we will always be willing tobring the Good News of the Gospel wherever Godleads us.
May we glorify God together for these and all thecountless blessings that have filled our lives for 100years. May our families, friends and benefactors beassured of our gratitude and prayer. Because of theirgenerosity and support, we have experienced thepromise of Don Bosco: “Trust in Mary and you willknow what miracles are.”
“Like St John Bosco and St. Mary Mazzarello, we want togive thanks to God for 100 years
of blessings received andoutpoured in abundance.”
Archbishop Timothy Dolan is clearly delighted to greet
Sr. Phyllis Neves (right) before Mass at St. Patrick’s Cathedral!

All Aboard for an Unforgettable Cruise!
Following Mass, it was time toset sail aboard the World YachtDuchess for an incredible dinner
cruise around Manhattan Island.
Why a cruise? We recalled the bravesea journey of the first four SalesianSisters – Sr. Antoinette Agliardi,Sr. Veneranda Zammit, Sr. FrancesDelfino, and Sr. Angelina Andorno –who arrived in New York Harbor in1908, penniless but rich in the Spiritand God’s love.
As we sailed past the Statue ofLiberty and Ellis Island, a fireworksdisplay lit up the night sky in honor ofthe pioneer Sisters and all those whohave followed in their wake these 100years. Our cruise included dinner, dancing, and a performance byBroadway star Christian Hoff. Thestory unfolds on the following pages.
Our Centennial Celebration was ourbiggest fundraiser ever, with morethan $000,000 donated to support theSalesian Sisters’ mission to at-riskchildren. How can we ever thank youfor your generosity?
As guests boarded the World Yacht “Duchess” for our
‘round Manhattan cruise, they were greeted by students from
Mary Help of Christians Academy,
dressed in outfits from 1908, the year the first
Salesian Sisters arrived in the U.S.A.
