Massive awareness on censorship issues
in the country, both urban and rural is now
one of the priority activities for the Office
of Censorship in 2016 and beyond.
This was made known by the Chief Cen-
sor Mr Steven Mala at the two day’s
workshop hosted by the Office.
Mr Mala said, “in order for the population
to learn more about what the office does
or to understand the office’s role in the
community as a government entity, the
media must firstly show interest in censor-
ship work and express that mere keen atti-
tude toward compiling reliable infor-
mation that is worth sharing to the com-
munities so everyone understands the role
of the office and can assist in any way by
helping the Office deliver its services ef-
fectively.” With the goal of expanding
awareness nationwide, the office planned
and organised a Censorship Awareness
and Media Partnership Workshop on the
12th and 13th of November, 2015, which
was held at March Girls Resort, outside of
Port Moresby. It was a two days’ work-
shop attended by representatives from the
print media (newspapers), electronic me-
dia (radio/television) and social media
(PNG Loop). In line with the functions of
the Censorship Board in regulating and
monitoring the content of mass communi-
cation, the main aim of the workshop is to
educate journalists with accurate and com-
prehensive information to guide them in
reporting censorship news with a ‘human
touch.’ During the workshop, it was
stressed that the media and the general
public must understand the role and func-
tion of this Office which has the interest
of the people, especially children, women
and vulnerable person. The Office is striv-
ing to deliver better awareness programs
and establish policies that will protect a
growing mind in any given society in this
country. Meanwhile, the expected out-
come of the workshop is for the Censor-
ship Board through the Office of Censor-
ship to build partnership and networking
with the main stream media for advocacy
and awareness-raising on censorship is-
sues in the country.

Chief Censor’s End of Year Message
Page 2
To the Management and Staff,
This year can be summarized in a few words: In the face of significant challenges, we
made significant progress. I thank you for your continued commitment and all that
you do to deliver on our purpose.
While there is much work to do and there may be further challenges ahead, we end
2015 on a very high note. I only provided the leadership and support but it was you
who made it work, although the financial shortage of the National Government had
an impact on our operation, that didn’t deter us from carrying out our Annual Opera-
tional Plan, and I am proud to announce that we completed nearly ninety percent
(90%) of our activities and I will say that it was your hard work and commitment that
made me stand out and to talk like this.
The New Year will bring its own mix of successes and challenges, but our direction is
clear and we know what we must do. Our job is to continue to focus intently on what
we can do as an office.
I appreciate all of your great work this year; it is because of you, and because we
know we can do so much more, that I have such great confidence in our future.
Please enjoy some well-deserved rest with family and friends during this holiday sea-
son, and let’s get right back to it in 2016.
…..Have a Merry Christmas and a blessed and Prosperous New Year….
