Encounter Andrise in Haiti

“Education is the foundation of everything,” says Andrise, who‟s been a first-grade teacher at a small Catholic school for 11 years. It‟s the same school she attended from first through sixth grade, in the community she calls home in northern Haiti.

Andrise says the opportunities at Notre Dame set the course for her life. But a lot has changed since she was a student. New teaching tech-niques and resources are changing how students learn—and how teachers teach. “We use poems, dances, songs—all sorts of activities to help the students improve their literacy,” she says.

Catholic Relief Services—working with the Cath-olic Education Commission in Haiti—is leading the way. Every student receives a new workbook to practice their reading and writing. This is a big change from before, when students had to copy notes from the board. “Now, all the stu-dents are able to learn at the same time,” An-drise says. And she benefits too—from ongoing teacher training. Last year, the parish priest named her Teacher of the Year.

The new techniques are working: Andrise‟s classroom is a high-energy place, and the stu-dents love school—and her. “They call me „my mother,‟ and I call them „my son, my daughter,” she says. “They‟ve already promised that next year, when they‟re in second grade, they‟ll take time out of their recess to come and visit me.” For a teacher like Andrise, seeing the children grow not just as students, but as people, is the reason she goes to work each day.

Lenten Offering

During the sea-son of Lent we are giving a Lenten Program. It consists of $1.00 a day for 40 days. You offer the LORD this sacrifice in gratitude for all He has done for you. Un encuentro con Andrise

“La educación es la base de todo”, dice Andrise, quien ha estado enseñando en la misma escuela primaria de la que se graduó en el norte de Haití durante 11 años.

Sin embargo, mucho ha cambiado desde que era estudiante. Las nuevas técnicas y recursos de enseñanza están cambiando la forma en que los estudiantes aprenden—cómo enseñan los maes-tros. “Usamos poemas, danzas, canciones, todo tipo de actividades para ayudar a los estudiantes a mejorar su alfabetización”, dice.

Catholic Relief Services—en colaboración con la Comisión de Educación Católica en Haití—está liderando el camino. Cada alumno recibe un nuevo libro para practicar su lectura y escritura. Este es un gran cambio comparado con lo que era antes, cuando los alumnos tenían que copiar notas de la pizarra. Y ella también se beneficia—de la capacitación permanente de los maestros. El año pasado, el párroco la nombró Maestra del Año.

Las nuevas técnicas están funcionando: el salón de clases de Andrise es un lugar de alta energía, y a los alumnos les encanta la escuela—y ella. “Me llaman „mi madre‟, y los llamo „mi hijo, mi hija‟”, dice. “Ya han prometido que el año que viene, cuando estén en segundo grado, tomarán tiempo de su recreo para venir y visitarme”. Pa-ra una maestra como Andrise, ver a los niños crecer no sólo como alumnos, sino como perso-nas, es la razón por la que ella va a trabajar to-dos los días.
