Our Spiritual Journey
Daily Spiritual Themes: You will find below a detailed spiritual theme for each
day of our pilgrimage. Every day either formally or informally (depending on
timetable) we will make reference to the theme of the day, so please keep this
pilgrim guide with you always. You are encouraged to pray and reflect on each
daily theme throughout the day.
Sunday 23rd June 2019
We leave home, we leave Ireland behind and as individuals and companions on the journey we begin our pilgrimage. God invites us to come apart from the normal routine of life to encounter him and others as we journey towards the burial place of St. James the Great, Apostle and Martyr, in Santiago de Compostela.
Monday 24th June 2019
Theme: God the Father loves me as I am and has a wonderful
plan for me
Prayer/Grace: To come to a deeper awareness of God’s
unconditional love for me
God is not someone who lives far away in a place you can never reach. He
is a father who loves you and says: “I have loved you with an everlasting
love, therefore I am constant in my affection for you.” (Jer. 31:3)
11
You can know God and know how much he loves you. He wants to be in
a personal relationship with you. He wants you to be his daughter, his son.
He doesn’t want there to be any barrier or distance between you and him.
“Can a mother forget her baby and not have compassion on the child she
has borne. Yet if even she forgets, I will not forget you. See I have carved
you in the palms of my hands.” (Is. 49:15-16).
He loves you, God the creator of the universe, the one who made all things
out of nothing, loves you! He wants to care for you and give you a better
life. “I know the plans I have for you, it is the Lord who speaks, plans for
peace, not disaster, to give you a future full of hope. When you call upon
me and come and pray to me, I will hear you. You will seek me and find
me. (Jer. 29:11-13).
Sometimes God may seem far away or not really interested in you. God
will not impose himself but waits patiently for you to invite him into your
life. If you wish to know God, if you wish to have the life he offers, you
can! Just turn to him and reach out to him. He is very close to you, and
right now he is trying to show himself to you in a deeper way than ever
before. Invite him into your life today and ask him to reveal his
unconditional love for you. “The Lord is near to all who call upon him, to
all who call upon him in truth” (Ps. 145:18).
“It is not us who first loved God, it is he who loved us first. God is like
that: he is always first. He is the first to wait for us, the first to love us,
the first to help us. It is a love that surpasses all knowledge. It surpasses
everything. The love of God is so great; a poet described it as a
‘bottomless sea without shores’. This is the love we must try to
understand, the love that we receive.” - (Pope Francis)

Tuesday 25th June 2019
Theme: Human Person – Created Dignity and Dignity in Jesus
Prayer/Grace: To come to a deeper understanding of my human
dignity in Jesus Christ
Humanity is the summit of God’s creation because God created us in his
image and likeness. “So God created man in his own image, in the image
of God he created him; male and female he created them. And God
blessed them, and said to them ‘Be fruitful and multiply, fill the earth and
subdue it; and have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of
the air and over every living thing that moves upon the earth.” (Gen. 1:27,
2:18)
You are not a something but rather a someone. Made in God’s image you
are a person, capable of thinking beyond your immediate horizon and
measuring the whole breadth of being. You can even know yourself with
critical objectivity and work to improve yourself. You can know and
perceive others as persons, understand them in their dignity and love
them. Likewise you can know God and choose to love him. “Love is of
God, and he who loves is born of God and knows God.” (1 Jn 4:7)
As a human being you are both body and spirit. Through your reason you
know that your spirit is more than the function of your body and cannot
be explained in terms of your material composition. This spiritual
principle that is united to your body but not identical to it is called the
‘Soul’. The human soul is created directly by God at the moment of
conception, creating a unique spiritual person called to a never-ending
relationship with him. “Then the Lord God formed man from the dust of
13
the ground. He breathed the breath of life into man’s nostrils and man
became a living person.” (Gen 2:7)
Jesus shows us not only God’s true nature but also the true dignity,
identity and ideal of humanity. Jesus, the Son of God, is the authentic,
true man. “Jesus increased in wisdom and in stature, and in favour with
God and man.” (Lk 2:52)
In Jesus we recognise how God willed man to be. You cannot know what
it means to be a man or woman, and what makes you infinitely loveable
in the truest sense of the word, except in and through Jesus, who “in every
respect has been tempted as we are, yet without sinning.” (Heb 4:5)
“Human persons are willed by God; they are imprinted with God’s image.
Their dignity does not come from the work they do, but from the person
they are” - (Pope Saint John Paul II)
Wednesday 26th June 2019
Theme: Human Condition – Sin & Mercy, Despair & Hope,
Death & Life
Prayer/Grace: To come to a deeper personal understanding that I
am a redeemed sinner
At the beginning of the human race, humans rejected God’s love. This
original sin has been passed down through the human race. But, from
that moment, God promised not to leave us in this state – he would send
a Redeemer to save us. “The Lord God said to the serpent, ‘because you
have done this … I will put enmity between you and the woman, and
between your offspring and her offspring, he shall bruise your head, and
you shall bruise his heel” (Gen 3:14-15)
14
“Do not be afraid Mary … behold you will conceive in your womb and bear
a son, and you shall call his name Jesus. He will be great, and will be called
the Son of the Most High … and of his Kingdom there will be no end” (Lk
1:30-33)
How do you know that you have inherited original sin? You struggle to
know things; you are weak and easily misled; you struggle to choose what
is right; you struggle to trust and believe in God.
While original sin doesn’t compel you to sin you are however deeply
wounded by it and are inclined to sin – this is called concupiscence and we
experience it every day. Nevertheless with God’s help you are capable of
overcoming this inclination in order to do good. “But the Lord said to me:
‘My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness’.
I will all the more gladly boast of my weaknesses, that the power of Christ
may rest upon me”. (2 Cor 12:9)
The Good News of the Gospel is that God sends his Son Jesus to us out of
his infinite love, so that despite our sins, through his life, death and
resurrection, we might find our way back to eternal fellowship with Him.
Jesus has reconciled us to the Father: not only does he restore us in
friendship but in Him we receive adoption, we become children of the
Father. He fills our souls with grace, which is his own life in us, given to us
in Baptism and renewed every time in Confession. So this means we are
really free to choose God. “God shows his love for us in that while we were
yet sinners Christ died for us” (Rom 5:8)
“I am a sinner … I am sure of this. I am a sinner whom the Lord has looked
upon with mercy. I am a forgiven man … I still make mistakes and commit
sins, and I confess every fifteen or twenty days. And if I confess it is
because I need to feel that God’s mercy is still upon me” - (Pope Francis)

Thursday 27th June 2019
Theme for the Day: The Holy Spirit – The Holy Spirit, whom the
Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and
remind you of everything I said to you
Prayer/Grace: To ask the Father for an increase in the power and
presence of the Holy Spirit in your life
The same Spirit that hovered over the waters at Creation, “and the Spirit
of God was moving over the face of the waters” (Gen 1:2),
The same Spirit that spoke through the prophets, the same Spirit that was
poured out upon the Church, filling the Apostles and enabling them to
speak in different languages, “And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit
and began to speak in other tongues”. (Acts 2:4)
This is the same Spirit that you received at your Confirmation.
“Confirmation is the Sacrament that completes Baptism; in it the gift of
the Holy Spirit is bestowed upon us. Anyone who freely decides to live a
life as God’s child and asks for God’s Spirit under the signs of the imposition
of hands and anointing with Chrism receives the strength to witness to
God’s love and might in word and deed. He/She is now a fully-fledged,
responsible member of the Catholic Church” (CCC 1285-1314)
The Holy Spirit continues to be poured out in our lives every time we ask
the Father. For many, the full fruits, gifts, charisms, power and working of
the Holy Spirit has not being realised because they have not made an adult
decision to turn to the Lord and ask him to come into their life. The Holy
Spirit is the love and life of the Trinity made present to us and it’s always
possible to look for a deeper realisation of Him in your life. All you need
16
to do is ask the Father. “So I say to you: Ask and it will be given to you,
seek and you will find, knock and it will be opened to you … if you who are
evil know how to give good things to your children, how much more will
the heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him!” (Lk 11:9-
13)
“The Holy Spirit is our strength! We cannot do anything without the
Spirit. It is the Holy Spirit that allows us to rise from our limitations, from
our deaths, because there are so many neuroses in our life and in our
soul. A life that may call itself Christian, but that leaves no room for the
Spirit and does not allow itself to be carried forward by the Spirit, is a
pagan life, disguised as Christian. The Spirit is the protagonist of
Christian Life” – (Pope Francis)
Friday 28th June 2019
Theme for the Day: The Church – Deposit of faith, Sacramental
Life, Gospel Values, Prayer
Prayer/Grace: To make a firm resolution to grow in the Christian
way of living.
We are not called to eternal life by ourselves. God himself is not a solitary
being but a community of persons. From the beginning of time he planned
the Church, the body – a communion of peoples with God and with each
other – through which his salvation would reach the ends of the earth. It
is in the Church that we receive God’s own life even now, the beginning
of our eternal life. “So those who received his word were baptised, and
there were added that day about three thousand. And they held
steadfastly to the Apostles’ teaching and fellowship, to the breaking of
bread and to the prayers” (Acts 2:41-42)
17
In order to grow in the life of the Spirit, you need to know what God
teaches and receive his life and grace. “Sacred Tradition and sacred
Scripture form one sacred deposit of the word of God, committed to the
Church. Holding fast to this deposit the entire people of God united to their
shepherds remain always steadfast in the teaching of the Apostles, in
common life, the breaking of bread and the prayers”
In order to keep in personal contact with God who is our source of life,
you should pray. Jesus prayed. “Jesus’ reputation continued to grow, and
large crowds would gather to hear him and to have their sickness cured,
but he would always go off to some place where he could be alone and
pray”. (Lk 5:15-16)
“This, then, is how you should pray:
Our Father in heaven,
hallowed be your name,
your kingdom come,
your will be done,
on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us today our daily bread.
And forgive us our debts,
as we also have forgiven our debtors.
And lead us not into temptation,
but deliver us from the evil one.” (Mt 6:9-13)
“I too think of many Christians who believe that praying is to talk to God
like a parrot, no! Praying is done from the heart, from inside. He does
not need anything, our God: in prayer he asks only that we keep open
the channel of communication with him to always discover ourselves to
be his beloved children and that he loves us so much”. – (Pope Francis)
18
Saturday 29th June 2019
Theme for the Day: Vocation, Call, Holiness, Mission
Prayer/Grace: To respond generously to the call of God in my life.
The word vocation can be understood in a broad sense as a calling from
God, including the call to life, the call to friendship with him, the call to
holiness. This is helpful, since it situates our whole life in relation to the
God who loves us. It makes us realise that nothing is the result of pure
chance but that everything in our lives can become a way of responding
to the Lord, who has wonderful plan for us. (Christus Vivit, 248)
Your own personal vocation does not consist only in the work you do,
though that is an expression of it. Your vocation is something more: it is
a path guiding your many efforts and actions towards the service of
others. So in discerning your vocation, it is important to determine if you
see in yourself the abilities needed to perform that specific service to
society. (Christus Vivit, 255)
I like to think that “two Christians who marry have recognised the call of
the Lord in their own love story, the vocation to form one flesh and one
life from two, male and female. The Sacrament of Holy Matrimony
envelops this love in the grace of God; it roots it in God himself. By this
gift, and by the certainty of this call, you can go forward with assurance,
you have nothing to fear, and you can face everything together. (Christus
Vivit, 260)
For those who are not called to marriage or to consecrated life, it must
always be remembered that the first and most important vocation is the
vocation we have received in Baptism. Those who are single, even if not
19
by their own choice, can offer a particular witness to that vocation
through their own path of personal growth. (Christus Vivit, 267)
In discerning your vocation, do not dismiss the possibility of devoting
yourself to God in the priesthood, the religious life or in other forms of
consecration. Why not? You can be sure that, if you do recognise and
follow a call from God in this way, there you will find complete fulfilment.
(Christus Vivit, 276)
“Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptising them in the
name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to
observe all that I have commanded you; and behold I am with you always,
to the close of the age”. (Mt 28:19-20)
Christians are ready to proclaim the Gospel because they can’t hide the
joy that comes from knowing Christ – (Pope Francis)
Sunday 30th June 2019
As our pilgrimage comes to an end we remember that life is itself a pilgrimage and the spiritual journey and the truths we’ve experienced continue to apply in the same way. The Lord is risen and is by our side every day. He has called us to be in intimate relationship with him and has given us the power of His Spirit to guide us home to the Father. Heaven awaits but not just yet!!!

St. Patrick’s Breastplate
I arise today
Through a mighty strength, the invocation of the Trinity,
Through a belief in the Threeness,
Through confession of the Oneness
Of the Creator of creation.
Christ with me, Christ before me, Christ behind me,
Christ in me, Christ beneath me, Christ above me,
Christ on my right, Christ on my left,
Christ when I lie down, Christ when I sit down,
Christ in the heart of every man who thinks of me,
Christ in the mouth of every man who speaks of me,
Christ in the eye that sees me,
Christ in the ear that hears me.
I arise today
Through a mighty strength, the invocation of the Trinity,
Through a belief in the Threeness,
Through a confession of the Oneness
Of the Creator of creation
Salvation is of the Lord, Salvation is of Christ.
May Thy Salvation, O Lord, be ever with us.

Mass Readings
23 June 2019 - The Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ
1st Reading: Genesis 14:18-20 Melchizedek brought bread and wine and pronounced a blessing
Melchizedek king of Salem brought bread and wine; he was a priest of God
Most High. He pronounced this blessing:
‘Blessed be Abraham by God Most High,
creator of heaven and earth,
and blessed be God Most High
for handing over your enemies to you.’
And Abraham gave him a tithe of everything.
This Word of the Lord
Responsorial: Psalm 109:1-4 Response: You are a priest for ever, in the line of Melchizedek
The Lord’s revelation to my Master:
‘Sit on my right:
I will put your foes beneath your feet.’ (R./)
The Lord will send from Zion
your sceptre of power:
rule in the midst of all your foes. (R./)
A prince from the day of your birth
on the holy mountains.
From the womb before the daybreak
I begot you. (R./)
22
The Lord has sworn an oath he will not change.
‘You are a priest for ever,
a priest like Melchizedek of old.’
You are a priest for ever, in the line of Melchizedek. (R./)
2nd Reading: 1 Corinthians 11:23-26 Every time you eat this bread and drink this cup, you are proclaiming the
death of the Lord.
This is what I received from the Lord, and in turn passed on to you: that on
the same night that he was betrayed, the Lord Jesus took some bread, and
thanked God for it and broke it, and he said, “This is my body, which is for
you; do this as a memorial of me.” In the same way he took the cup after
supper, and said, “This cup is the new covenant in my blood. Whenever you
drink it, do this as a memorial of me.”
Until the Lord comes, therefore, every time you eat this bread and drink this
cup, you are proclaiming his death.
This Word of the Lord
R. Alleluia, alleluia.
I am the living bread that came down from heaven, says the Lord;
whoever eats this bread will live forever.
R. Alleluia, alleluia.
Gospel: Luke 9:11-17 They all ate and were filled
Jesus made the crowds welcome and talked to them about the kingdom of
God; and he cured those who were in need of healing. It was late afternoon
when the Twelve came to him and said, “Send the people away, and they can
go to the villages and farms round about to find lodging and food; for we are
in a lonely place here.”
He replied, “Give them something to eat yourselves.” But they said, “We have
no more than five loaves and two fish, unless we are to go ourselves and buy
23
food for all these people.” For there were about five thousand men. But he
said to his disciples, “Get them to sit down in parties of about fifty.”
They did so and made them all sit down. Then he took the five loaves and the
two fish, raised his eyes to heaven, and said the blessing over them; then he
broke them and handed them to his disciples to distribute among the crowd.
They all ate as much as they wanted, and when the scraps remaining were
collected they filled twelve baskets.
24 June 2019 - Nativity of St. John the Baptist
1st Reading: Isaiah 49:1-6 The Lord called me before I was born; in my mother’s womb he named me
Listen to me, O coastlands, pay attention, you peoples from far away! The
Lord called me before I was born, while I was in my mother’s womb he
named me. He made my mouth like a sharp sword, in the shadow of his hand
he hid me; he made me a polished arrow, in his quiver he hid me away. And
he said to me, “You are my servant, Israel, in whom I will be glorified.” But I
said, “I have laboured in vain, I have spent my strength for nothing and
vanity; yet surely my cause is with the Lord, and my reward with my God.”
And now the Lord says, who formed me in the womb to be his servant, to
bring Jacob back to him, and that Israel might be gathered to him, for I am
honoured in the sight of the Lord, and my God has become my strength– he
says, “It is too light a thing that you should be my servant to raise up the
tribes of Jacob and to restore the survivors of Israel; I will give you as a light
to the nations, that my salvation may reach to the end of the earth.”
This Word of the Lord
24
Resp. Psalm: Ps 139 R.: I praise you, for I am wonderfully made
O Lord, you search me and you know me,
you know my resting and my rising,
you discern my purpose from afar.
You mark when I walk or lie down,
all my ways lie open to you. (R./)
For it was you who created my being,
knit me together in my mother’s womb.
I thank you for the wonder of my being,
for the wonders of all your creation. (R./)
Already you knew my soul,
my body held no secret from you,
when I was being fashioned in secret
and moulded in the depths of the earth. (R./)
2nd Reading: Acts 13:22-26 As background to the Gospel, Paul mentions the Baptist as herald of Christ
In those days, Paul said: God made David king of our ancestors.. In his
testimony about him he said, “I have found David, son of Jesse, to be a man
after my heart, who will carry out all my wishes.” Of this man’s posterity God
has brought to Israel a Saviour, Jesus, as he promised; before his coming
John had already proclaimed a baptism of repentance to all the people of
Israel. And as John was finishing his work, he said, “What do you suppose

Gospel Luke 1:57-66, 80 Celebration and joy at the birth of John the Baptist
The time came for Elizabeth to give birth, and she bore a son. Her
neighbours and relatives heard that the Lord had shown his great mercy to
her, and they rejoiced with her. On the eighth day they came to circumcise
the child, and they were going to name him Zechariah after his father. But
his mother said, “No; he is to be called John.” They said to her, “None of your
relatives has this name.” Then they began motioning to his father to find out
what name he wanted to give him. He asked for a writing tablet and wrote,
“His name is John.” And all of them were amazed. Immediately his mouth
was opened and his tongue freed, and he began to speak, praising God. Fear
came over all their neighbours, and all these things were talked about
throughout the entire hill country of Judea. All who heard them pondered
them and said, “What then will this child become?” For, indeed, the hand of
the Lord was with him. The child grew and became strong in spirit, and he
was in the desert until the day he appeared publicly to Israel.
25 June 2019 - Tuesday of Week 12
1st Reading: Genesis 13:2, 5-18 The herdsmen of Abram and Lot quarrel, and the two groups go their separate ways
Abram was very rich in livestock, in silver, and in gold. Now Lot, who went
with Abram, also had flocks and herds and tents, so that the land could not
26
support both of them living together; for their possessions were so great that
they could not live together, and there was strife between the herders of
Abram’s livestock and the herders of Lot’s livestock. At that time the
Canaanites and the Perizzites lived in the land.
Then Abram said to Lot, “Let there be no strife between you and me, and
between your herders and my herders; for we are kindred. Is not the whole
land before you? Separate yourself from me. If you take he left hand, then I
will go to the right; or if you take the right hand, then I will go to the left.”
Lot looked about him, and saw that the plain of the Jordan was well watered
everywhere like the garden of the Lord, like the land of Egypt, in the
direction of Zoar; this was before the Lord had destroyed Sodom and
Gomorrah. So Lot chose for himself all the plain of the Jordan, and Lot
journeyed eastward; thus they separated from each other. Abram settled in
the land of Canaan, while Lot settled among the cities of the Plain and moved
his tent as far as Sodom. Now the people of Sodom were wicked, great
sinners against the Lord.
The Lord said to Abram, after Lot had separated from him, “Raise your eyes
now, and look from the place where you are, northward and southward and
eastward and westward; for all the land that you see I will give to you and to
your offspring forever. I will make your offspring like the dust of the earth;
so that if one can count the dust of the earth, your offspring also can be
counted. Rise up, walk through the length and the breadth of the land, for I
will give it to you.” So Abram moved his tent, and came and settled by the
oaks of Mamre, which are at Hebron; and there he built an altar to the Lord.

Jesus said to his disciples:
“Do not give what is holy to dogs; and do not throw your pearls before swine,
or they will trample them under foot and turn and maul you.”
“In everything do to others as you would have them do to you; for this is the

the road is easy that leads to destruction, and there are many who take it. For
the gate is narrow and the road is hard that leads to life, and there are few
who find it.”

26 June 2019 - Wednesday of Week 12
1st Reading: Genesis 15:1-12, 17-18 God’s promise of descendants to Abraham is renewed
The word of the Lord came to Abram in a vision, “Do not be afraid, Abram, I
am your shield; your reward shall be very great.” But Abram said, “O Lord
God, what will you give me, for I continue childless, and the heir of my house
is Eliezer of Damascus?” And Abram said, “You have given me no offspring,
and so a slave born in my house is to be my heir.” But the word of the Lord
came to him, “This man shall not be your heir; nobody but your very own
issue shall be your heir.”
He brought him outside and said, “Look toward heaven and count the stars,
if you are able to count them.” Then he said to him, “So shall your
descendants be.” And he believed the Lord; and the Lord reckoned it to him
as righteousness.
Then he said to him, “I am the Lord who brought you from Ur of the
Chaldeans, to give you this land to possess.” But he said, “O Lord God, how
am I to know that I shall possess it?” He said to him, “Bring me a heifer three
years old, a female goat three years old, a ram three years old, a turtledove,
and a young pigeon.” He brought him all these and cut them in two, laying
each half over against the other; but he did not cut the birds in two. And
when birds of prey came down on the carcasses, Abram drove them away.
As the sun was going down, a deep sleep fell upon Abram, and a deep and
terrifying darkness descended upon him. When the sun had gone down and
it was dark, a smoking fire pot and a flaming torch passed between these
pieces. Abraham on that day the Lord made a covenant with Abram, saying,

“To your descendants I give this land, from the river of Egypt to the great

same way, every good tree bears good fruit, but the bad tree bears bad fruit.

tree that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire. Thus
you will know them by their fruits.”
27 June 2019 -Thursday of Week 12
1st Reading: Genesis 16:1-12, 15-16 Hagar is driven out, but an angel is sent to rescue her
Sarai, Abram’s wife, bore him no children. She had an Egyptian slave-girl
whose name was Hagar, and Sarai said to Abram, “You see that the Lord has
prevented me from bearing children; go in to my slave-girl; it may be that I
shall obtain children by her.” And Abram listened to the voice of Sarai. So,
after Abram had lived ten years in the land of Canaan, Sarai, Abram’s wife,
took Hagar the Egyptian, her slave-girl, and gave her to her husband Abram
as a wife. He went in to Hagar, and she conceived; and when she saw that she
had conceived, she looked with contempt on her mistress. Then Sarai said to
Abram, “May the wrong done to me be on you! I gave my slave-girl to your
embrace, and when she saw that she had conceived, she looked on me with
contempt. May the Lord judge between you and me!” But Abram said to
Sarai, “Your slave-girl is in your power; do to her as you please.” Then Sarai
dealt harshly with her, and she ran away from her.
The angel of the Lord found her by a spring of water in the desert, the spring
on the way to Shur. And he said, “Hagar, slave-girl of Sarai, where have you
come from and where are you going?” She said, “I am running away from my
31
mistress Sarai.” The angel of the Lord said to her, “Return to your mistress,
and submit to her.” The angel of the Lord also said to her, “I will so greatly
multiply your offspring that they cannot be counted for multitude.” And the
angel of the Lord said to her, “Now you have conceived and shall bear a son;
you shall call him Ishmael, for the Lord has given heed to your affliction. He
shall be a wild ass of a man, with his hand against everyone, and everyone’s
hand against him; and he shall live at odds with all his kin.”
Hagar bore Abram a son; and Abram named his son, whom Hagar bore,
Ishmael. Abram was eighty-six years old when Hagar bore him Ishmael.

Gospel: Matthew 7:21-29 Hearing God’s word and acting upon it
Jesus said to his disciples,
“Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of
heaven, but only the one who does the will of my Father in heaven. On that
day many will say to me, ‘Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name, and
cast out demons in your name, and do many deeds of power in your name?’
Then I will declare to them, ‘I never knew you; go away from me, you
evildoers.’
“Everyone then who hears these words of mine and acts on them will be like
a wise man who built his house on rock. The rain fell, the floods came, and
the winds blew and beat on that house, but it did not fall, because it had been
founded on rock. And everyone who hears these words of mine and does not
act on them will be like a foolish man who built his house on sand. The rain
fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and beat against that house,
and it fell–and great was its fall!”
Now when Jesus had finished saying these things, the crowds were
astounded at his teaching, for he taught them as one having authority, and
not as their scribes.
28 June 2019 - The Sacred Heart of Jesus
1st Reading: Ezekiel 34:11-16 The Lord God will search for His sheep and pasture them
For thus says the Lord God: I myself will search for my sheep, and will seek
them out. As shepherds seek out their flocks when they are among their
33
scattered sheep, so I will seek out my sheep. I will rescue them from all the
places to which they have been scattered on a day of clouds and thick
darkness.
I will bring them out from the peoples and gather them from the countries,
and will bring them into their own land; and I will fed them on the
mountains of Israel, by the watercourses, and in all the inhabited parts of the
land. I will feed them with good pasture, and the mountain heights of Israel
shall be their pasture; there they shall lie down in good grazing land, and
they shall feed on rich pasture on the mountains of Israel.
I myself will be the shepherd of my sheep, and I will make them lie down,
says the Lord God. I will seek the lost, and I will bring back the strayed, and I
will bind up the injured, and I will strengthen the weak, but the fat and the
strong I will destroy. I will feed them with justice.
This Word of the Lord
Responsorial: Psalm 22 Response: The Lord is my shepherd, there is nothing I shall want
The Lord is my shepherd;
there is nothing I shall want.
Fresh and green are the pastures
where he gives me repose.
Near restful waters he leads me,
to revive my drooping spirit. (R./)
He guides me along the right path;
he is true to his name.
If I should walk in the valley of darkness
no evil would I fear.
You are there with your crook and staff;
with these you give me comfort. (R./)
You have prepared a banquet for me
in the sight of my foes.
34
My head you have anointed with oil;
my cup is overflowing. (R./)
Surely goodness and kindness shall follow me
all the days of my life.
In the Lord’s own house shall I dwell
for ever and ever. R.
2nd Reading: Romans 5:5-11 God proves his love for us, through the sacrificial love of Christ
Hope does not disappoint us, because God’s love has been poured into our
hearts through the Holy Spirit that has been given to us. For while we were
still weak, at the right time Christ died for the ungodly. Indeed, rarely will
anyone die for a righteous person, though perhaps for a good person
someone might actually dare to die.
But God proves his love for us in that while we still were sinners Christ died
for us. Much more surely then, now that we have been justified by his blood,
will we be saved through him from the wrath of God. For if while we were
enemies, we were reconciled to God through the death of his Son, much
more surely, having been reconciled, will we be saved by his life. But more
than that, we even boast in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through
whom we have now received reconciliation.

Gospel: Luke 15:3-7 The lost sheep, sought and found by the good shepherd
Jesus told them this parable: “Which one of you, having a hundred sheep
and losing one of them, does not leave the ninety-nine in the wilderness and
35
go after the one that is lost until he finds it? When he has found it, he lays it
on his shoulders and rejoices. And when he comes home, he calls together
his friends and neighbours, saying to them, ‘Rejoice with me, for I have
found my sheep that was lost.’ Just so, I tell you, there will be more joy in
heaven over one sinner who repents than over ninety-nine righteous persons
who need no repentance.”
29 June 2019 - Saints Peter and Paul, apostles.
(Solemnity)
1st Reading: Acts 2:1-11 Peter is imprisoned, but an angel sets him free to continue leading the church
King Herod laid violent hands upon some who belonged to the church. He
had James, the brother of John, killed with the sword. After he saw that it
pleased the Jews, he proceeded to arrest Peter also. (This was during the
festival of Unleavened Bread.) When he had seized him, he put him in prison
and handed him over to four squads of soldiers to guard him, intending to
bring him out to the people after the Passover.
While Peter was kept in prison, the church prayed fervently to God for him.
The very night before Herod was going to bring him out, Peter, bound with
two chains, was sleeping between two soldiers, while guards in front of the
door were keeping watch over the prison. Suddenly an angel of the Lord
appeared and a light shone in the cell. He tapped Peter on the side and woke
him, saying, “Get up quickly.” And the chains fell off his wrists. The angel
said to him, “Fasten your belt and put on your sandals.” He did so. Then he
36
said to him, “Wrap your cloak around you and follow me.” Peter went out
and followed him; he did not realize that what was happening with the
angel’s help was real; he thought he was seeing a vision.
After they had passed the first and the second guard, they came before the
iron gate leading into the city. It opened for them of its own accord, and they
went outside and walked along a lane, when suddenly the angel left him.
Then Peter came to himself and said, “Now I am sure that the Lord has sent
his angel and rescued me from the hands of Herod and from all that the
Jewish people were expecting.”

2nd Reading: 2 Timothy 4:6-8, 17-18 In his prison cell, Paul he looks forward to the crown promised to all who serve God faithfully
As for me, I am already being poured out as a libation, and the time of my
departure has come. I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I
have kept the faith. From now on there is reserved for me the crown of
righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, will give me on that day,
and not only to me but also to all who have longed for his appearing.
But the Lord stood by me and gave me strength, so that through me the
message might be fully proclaimed and all the Gentiles might hear it. So I
was rescued from the lion’s mouth. The Lord will rescue me from every evil
attack and save me for his heavenly kingdom. To him be the glory forever
and ever. Amen.

Gospel: Matthew 16:13-19 Peter proclaims Jesus as the Son of the living God. For this he is given the keys of the Kingdom
When Jesus came into the district of Caesarea Philippi, he asked his
disciples, “Who do people say that the Son of Man is?” And they said, “Some
say John the Baptist, but others Elijah, and still others Jeremiah or one of
the prophets.” He said to them, “But who do you say that I am?” Simon Peter
answered, “You are the Messiah, the Son of the living God.”
And Jesus answered him, “Blessed are you, Simon son of Jonah! For flesh
and blood has not revealed this to you, but my Father in heaven. And I tell
you, you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of
Hades will not prevail against it. I will give you the keys of the kingdom of
38
heaven, and whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven, and
whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven.”
30 June 2019 - 13th Sunday Year C 1st Reading: 1 Kings 19:16, 19-21 Elisha immediately answers his call; leaving all he follows Elijah
The Lord said to Elijah, “You shall anoint Jehu son of Nimshi as king over
Israel; and you shall anoint Elisha son of Shaphat of Abel-meholah as
prophet in your place.”
Elijah set out from there, and found Elisha son of Shaphat, who was
ploughing, with twelve yoke of oxen ahead of him, and he was with the
twelfth. Elijah passed by him and threw his mantle over him. He left the
oxen, ran after Elijah, and said, “Let me kiss my father and my mother, and
then I will follow you.” Then Elijah said to him, “Go back again; for what
have I done to you?”
He returned from following him, took the yoke of oxen, and slaughtered
them; using the equipment from the oxen, he boiled their flesh, and gave it to
the people, and they ate. Then he set out and followed Elijah, and became his
servant.

2nd Reading: Galatians (5:1, 13-18 Resisting the flesh which draws us back towards sin and slavery
For freedom Christ has set us free. Stand firm, therefore, and do not submit
again to a yoke of slavery. For you were called to freedom, brothers and
sisters; only do not use your freedom as an opportunity for self-indulgence,
but through love become servants to one another. For the whole law is
summed up in a single commandment, “You shall love your neighbour as
yourself.” If, however, you bite and devour one another, take care that you
are not consumed by one another.
Live by the Spirit, I say, and do not gratify the desires of the flesh. For what
the flesh desires is opposed to the Spirit, and what the Spirit desires is
opposed to the flesh; for these are opposed to each other, to prevent you
from doing what you want. But if you are led by the Spirit, you are not
subject to the law.

Gospel: Luke 9:51-62 Jesus resolutely takes the road to Jerusalem, calling others to follow him
When the days drew near for him to be taken up, Jesus set his face to go to
Jerusalem. And he sent messengers ahead of him. On their way they entered
a village of the Samaritans to make ready for him; but they did not receive
him, because his face was set toward Jerusalem. When his disciples James
and John saw it, they said, “Lord, do you want us to command fire to come
down from heaven and consume them?” But he turned and rebuked them.
Then they went on to another village.
As they were going along the road, someone said to him, “I will follow you
wherever you go.” And Jesus said to him, “Foxes have holes, and birds of the
air have nests; but the Son of Man has nowhere to lay his head.” To another
he said, “Follow me.” But he said, “Lord, first let me go and bury my father.”
But Jesus said to him, “Let the dead bury their own dead; but as for you, go
and proclaim the kingdom of God.” Another said, “I will follow you, Lord;
but let me first say farewell to those at my home.” Jesus said to him, “No one
who puts hand to the plough and looks back is fit for the kingdom of God.”

In Christ alone! – who took on flesh, Fullness of God in helpless babe. There in the ground His body lay, Light of the world by darkness slain: Then bursting forth in glorious day Up from the grave He rose again! And as He stands in victory Sin’s curse has lost its grip on me, For I am His and He is mine – Bought with the precious blood of Christ.
