Cells! Cells! Cells!
All cells are made up of
Organelles.
What is an organelle?
Organelle means little organs. Organelle
have specific roles to play in how cells
work just like organs help the body to
function properly as a whole.
Cell Membrane
controls what
enters and exits
the cell and
thereby to protect
the cell.
In both plant and
animal cells.
Cytoplasm
is actually salt water with additional nutrients, salts (ions), and waste products.
Organelles are suspended in the cytoplasm and the cell membrane separates the cytoplasm from the outside of the cell.
The cytoplasm is gel-like (like Jell-O.)
In both plant and animal cells.
Nucleus
acts as the control
center for the cell.
It contains DNA
that directs all
functions of the
cell.
In both plant and
animal cells.
Mitochondria
is where the cell's
energy is made.
The mitochondria
are sometimes
called the cell's
powerhouse.
In both plant and
animal cells.
Vacuole
They store salts,
sugars, a few proteins,
and sometimes plant
colors.
They act as storage
bags for the cell.
They are much larger
in plant cells.
Endoplasmic Reticulum
Where proteins are
made
Smooth ER (no
ribosomes) is for
storage.
Rough ER is where
proteins are made.
Ribosomes
are little grains of
proteins.
They help turn
amino acids into
proteins
Golgi Apparatus
Packaging Organelle
gathers simple molecules and combines them to make molecules that are more complex
packages them in vesicles. These vesicles are either stored for later use, or sent out of the cell.
Works very closely with the ER
In both Plant and Animal Cells
Lysosomes
To digest things
like food or the cell
when it dies
Specialized vesicle
created by the
Golgi Appartatus
Only in animal cells
Cell Wall
is found outside
the cell membrane
in plant cells.
The cell wall is
there to give the
cell support and to
protect the cell.
Chloroplasts
They are the
organelles that can
carry out
photosynthesis.
This is where
chlorophyll is stored
to create food
during
photosynthesis.
