    WHATS THE RISK???

Car accidents and cell phone usage correspond in adirectly proportional relationship (Orlowske andLuyben)

There are two main risks associated with drivingand cell phone use

Drivers take their eyes off the road while dialing ortexting which significantly slows reaction time

People can become so absorbed in conversation thattheir ability to concentrate on the act of driving isseverely impaired, jeopardizing both themselves aswell as others

    Statistics

Cell phone use contributes to an estimated 6 percent of

all crashes, which equates to 636,000 crashes, 330,000

injuries, 12,000 serious injuries and 2,600 deaths each

year. (Harvard Center of Risk Analysis).

80% of teen drivers own a cell phone (Childrens

    Hospital of Philadelphia)

Half of them admit to using the cell phone while driving

    Drunk driving VS Cellular Cruising

Cell phone usage while driving can make a driver as inattentive as ifhe/she were drunk (State University of New York)

Motorists who talked on either handheld or hands-free cell phonesdrove slightly slower, were 9 percent slower to hit the brakes, displayed 24 percent more variation in following distance as theirattention switched between driving and conversing, were 19 percentslower to resume normal speed after braking and were more likely tocrash. Three study participants rear-ended the pace car. All weretalking on cell phones. None were drunk.

Drivers drunk at the 0.08 percent blood-alcohol level drove a bit moreslowly than both undistracted drivers and drivers using cell phones, yet more aggressively. They followed the pace car more closely, weretwice as likely to brake only four seconds before a collision wouldhave occurred, and hit their brakes with 23 percent more force.Neither accident rates, nor reaction times to vehicles braking in frontof the participant, nor recovery of lost speed following braking

differed significantly from undistracted drivers, the researchers write.
