Part E Acoustic Building RegulationsCellecta’s refurbishment and conversion solutions guide demonstrates how a number of commonly found separating floor and wall constructions can have their acoustic performance upgraded with proven, cost effective treatments that will exceed the demanding acoustic legislative requirements.

What do the Building Regulations require? To comply with current legislation, all separating floors and walls must be constructed in such a way as to achieve minimum prescribed acoustic values. Tests must be carried out by an accredited acoustic engineer to demonstrate compliance.

Refurbishment and conversion projectsEach construction element adopting exactly the same construction must be pre‐completion tested (PCT) by an accredited acoustician at a rate of 1:10.

Historic Buildings With some historical buildings undergoing a material change of use it may not be practical to achieve the prescribed sound performance values. In these cases, Building Control bodies should be satisfied that everything reasonable has been done to improve the sound performance of the structure. PCT is normally required and the results submitted accordingly.

Selecting the correct acoustic solutionEach project’s acoustic characteristics are different and should be assessed on an individual basis. Before a solution can be proposed, a number of important facts need to be established:

Airborne sound tested to BS EN ISO 140-4 1998

Impact sound tested to BS EN ISO 140-7 1998

Pre‐completion testing (PCT)

Once the information has been gathered, either select one of the solutions given on pages 4 ‐ 16, or should the construction not be detailed, contact Cellecta’s technical team on 08456 71‐71‐74 with the specific construction details.

What element(s) are to be addressed: walls ‐ floors ‐ ceilings? 2

What is the construction make‐up of all the walls, floors and ceilings? 3

4 Is the existing ceiling to be retained or upgraded?

5 Are there restrictions on the height of the floor finish and ceiling depth?

1 Is the proposed development deemed to be new build or change of use (including refurbishment)?

The acoustic performance of the floor structure will be compromised if the acoustic floorboard is not completely isolated from the timber joists, sub‐floor, services, door frames, surrounding walls and their treatments. To address this risk, each potential problem area needs to be detailed accordingly.

! Failure to install a perimeter flanking strip correctly will result in acoustic failureCaution

The acoustic efficiency of the floor or wall will be adversely affected should acoustic bridging between the acoustictreatment and the surrounding structures occur (known as flanking transmission). All floor finishes must be isolated from the surrounding walls (including plaster finish and skirting boards), door linings, services and other structural elements. To address acoustic flanking, Cellecta manufactures an extensive range of flexible extruded polyethylene edge strips to suit each specific treatment.

DO NOT secure the floating floor treatmentto the sub-deck or floor joists.

DO NOT sit the skirting board or allow theplaster or plasterboard to make direct contact with the floor treatment.

Ensure the acoustic floor treatment is freefloating and not fixed to the sub-structure.

Use YELOfon flanking strip to isolate thefloating floor treatment from the wall and itsfinishes.

The resistance to airborne sound depends mainly on the mass per unit area of the structural floor and supporting walls, and partly on the ceiling’s construction. It is therefore important to choose a ceiling treatment that complements the performance of the chosen structural floor, to produce an overall structure that exceeds the required values. De‐coupling the ceiling from the structural floor is an effective way of reducing the contact path that impact sound can follow. Adding mass in the way of plasterboard to the floor structure and filling the ceiling void with a mineral wool will also improve the acoustic performance of the structure. Detailed below are for four types of ceiling treatments available in order of performance:

Ceiling Treaments

Notes. Further guidance is given in Approved Document E and the manufacturer of the proposed ceiling system. Professional advice should be sought to ensure the overall floor construction complies with current fire regulations.
