Celebrating the King of Hollywood, Clark Gable
Heartthrob William Clark Gable was born this month in 1901. He became one
of the most popular romantic screen idols of all time.
In honor of the king of Hollywood's birthday we’ll celebrate him on Tuesday,
February 9, starting at 2:30 pm by taking the Clark Gable Trivia Test, reading a
short documentary, and ending with watching the Academy Award winning
movie “Gone with the Wind.” The Nursing Center family will enjoy warm but-
tered popcorn an ice cold coke during their afternoon movie.
Movie Matinee “Gone with the Wind” tells the tale of Scarlett O’Hara and the
three loves of her life; Tara (her family plantation), Ashley Wilkes, and Rhett
Butler. Through three husbands and one child, Scarlet uses all of her might to
preserve Tara through the destruction of the American Civil War. She pines
shamelessly for Ashley Wilkes despite his marriage to the saintly Melanie
Hamilton. Scarlett is her own worse enemy as she realizes too late that her true
love is a man a lot like her, Rhett Butler.
February Birthdays

Aquarius. These deep-thinking intellectuals have original dreams. Aquarians seek
freedom to reach their greatest potential. Those born between February 19–28 are
Pisces’ Fish. Pisces are friendly, wise, and selfless, making them
generous and compassionate friends. Their intuitive and romantic
natures make Fish creative artists.

Mardi Gras
In French Mardi Gras mean “Fat Tuesday” and is
celebrated before Ash Wednesday as a last
“fling” prior to the 40 days of Lent which
precedes Easter. The word “carnival” comes
from an old Italian word that means “go without
or removal of meat.” Festivals like Mardi Gras sprang up
throughout Europe as a means to prepare for the coming
times of self denial. Tuesday, February 16, at 10:30 a.m.,
we’ll celebrate Mardi Gras in true New Orleans fashion.
We will enjoy nibbling on a king cake and wearing masks
and beads in the traditional Mardi Gras colors purple,
green and gold.

President’s Day
The original version of the holiday was in honor of George Washington’s
birthday in 1796. In 1968, legislation was enacted that affected several
holidays. One of these holidays was Washington’s Birthday observation which
shifted to the third Monday in February each year. This act, which took place in
1971, was designed to simplify the yearly calendar of holidays and give federal
employees standard three-day weekends, in the process. On Monday,
February 15, at 10:30 a.m., residents will observe President’s Day with a game
of President bingo and a discussion of the history.
Chinese New Year
Chinese lunar New Year is commonly known as Chinese New Year or spring
festival. This is an important annual festival celebrated by
Chinese round the globe. The festival is based on Chinese
calendar and starts on the first month (as per the Chinese
calendar) and ends on the fifteenth day of the first month. This
year, 2018, is the Year of the Dog. Friday, February 19, at 10:30 a.m. We’ll
celebrate Chinese New Year with learning the teaching and sayings of the
Chinese philosopher, Confucious. The residents will enjoy eggrolls, green tea,
and fortune cookies for their morning snack.
Feed the Birds Day
This month is Feed the Birds Day. Some of the best foods for overwintering
birds are black-oil sunflower seeds, peanuts, thistle seed, and suet cakes,
which are a mix of seeds and berries blended into a cooled patty of suet.
Tuesday, February 23, at 3:30 p.m., we’ll make heart shape cookie cutter bird
feeders to hang outside the Nursing Center, name as many types of birds as
you we can think of (bluebird, robin, finch, sparrow, etc.) and solve the
FLOCK Categories puzzle.
Happy Hour
The Nursing Center residents will enjoy an afternoon relaxing with
light refreshments, a variety of wines and beer (alcohol free) and
the good company of one another. Happy Hour will take place, in
the Activity Room, on Wednesday, February 24, at 2:30 p.m.
