Award CategoriesThere are nine award categories. Please see pages 6 -10 for more details on eligibility for each category.

Early Childhood Teacher of the YearThis is an individual award for those teaching in the early childhood sector (P-2). School leaders are not eligible for this award category.

Primary Teacher of the Year This is an individual award for those teaching in the primary sector (K-6). School leaders are not eligible for this award category.

Secondary Teacher of the Year This is an individual award for those teaching in the secondary sector (7-12). School leaders are not eligible for this award category.

School Leader of the Year This is an individual award for school leaders (Principal, Deputy or Associate Principal, Executive Teachers).

New Educator of the YearThis is an individual award for new educators (teachers with up to three years experience)

Leadership in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Education This is an individual award for school leaders, teachers and staff other than teachers (education support or administrative staff from schools)

Education Support person of the YearThis is an individual award for staff other than teachers (education support or administrative staff) in school settings.

Volunteer of the YearThis is an individual award for school volunteers.

Outstanding Partnership of the YearThis is an individual or group award for school staff who have developed strong family or community partnerships.

Who can nominate?Anyone can nominate. Each nomination needs to be endorsed by the School Principal, Deputy Principal or School Network Leader.

How do I nominate someone?To nominate someone who you would like to recognise for their outstanding contribution to education, you will need to fill in the appropriate nomination form.

Nominating a TeacherPlease refer to the Australian Professional Standards for Teachers and the ACTPS Code of Conduct: Values and Signature Behaviours when nominating a teacher.

Nominating a Principal, Deputy Principal or Executive TeacherPlease refer to the Australian Professional Standard for Principals and the ACTPS Code of Conduct: Values and Signature Behaviours when nominating a School Leader.

Nominating a School Assistant, School Administrative Support Staff or School Volunteer Please refer to the priorities outlined in the Directorates Strategic Plan 2014-2017 Education Capital: Leading the Nation and the ACTPS Code of Conduct: Values and Signature Behaviours

RefereesFor all nominations, two referees are required. Referees need to be someone who has recent knowledge of the nominee’s professional work such as a Principal, School Network Leader, Professional Association member or Board Chair. One of the referee’s should be the nominee’s current supervisor.

Category 9Outstanding Partnership of the YearAward TypeIndividual or Group Award

EligibilityIndividuals or groups within schools who have developed partnerships are eligible for this award category. Partnerships can refer to:

families and carers other schools (non-government or public) early childhood services business organisations community organisations other education providers

RecognitionIt recognises a group who:

are achieving outstanding success through effective partnerships with the community and/or with families, carers and students

have achieved successful student outcomes and enhanced channels of engagement and volunteering as a result of these partnerships

demonstrate commitment to the Connecting with Families and the Community priority as outlined in the Directorates Strategic Plan 2014-2017 Education Capital: Leading the Nation

When I write the nomination what else should I consider?LanguageStatements should be written in the third person. Use pronouns ‘he’, ‘she’, ‘it’, or ‘they’ rather than ‘I’ and ‘me’ (first person) or ‘you’ and ‘yours’ (second person).

Remember, the judges don’t know your nominee or their work – it is up to you to make an influential, persuasive and compelling case.

Word countMake your words count. Avoid generalisations or sweeping statements. Provide evidence to back up your claims.

Introduction – maximum 250 words. Dot point format is acceptable. Professional statement – maximum 1500 words.

Make your case convincingShow, describe or illustrate how the nominee has made a difference to students’ learning outcomes (academic, social, emotional), and to their lives.

Terms and Conditions In order to be eligible for nomination in the Awards, nominees must agree to specific terms and conditions. When a nomination is received, nominees will be contacted via email to accept their nomination and seek their agreement of the terms and conditions.

The terms and conditions are outlined below:

1. nominees must abide by the decisions of the judging panel and no appeals will be entered into

2. category winners will accept an ambassadorial role to promote the Awards and to promote their profession e.g. presenting at the 2016 New Staff Welcome

3. nominees agree that any photographs, profiles and other details submitted will be used for promotional purposes by the Directorate. Information about winners and their photographs will be published on the Directorate’s website and in various publications.

What should I include in the Professional Statement?Use the questions below as a guide to prepare your nomination.

Provide an understanding of why the individual or team is being nominated. If possible, briefly describe the nominee's position and general job responsibilities. Why is the individual or team's contribution/achievement significant and deserving of recognition? Is there an issue, problem, or situation that the individual or team successfully addressed? What characteristics make this individual or team noteworthy? Describe some action steps that were taken. How were innovations and/or solutions identified, developed, and implemented? Provide facts, figures, specific practices or data (including anecdotal evidence) to strengthen your

nomination Refer to the Principal Professional Standard/Teacher Professional Standards and the ACT Code of

Conduct: Values and Signature Behaviours

Describe how your nominee has lead, worked collaboratively within the school, across the network or with community members etc.

How was leadership and/or teamwork exemplified? How are these steps beyond the normal requirements of the nominee's job?

What were the results of the achievement? What impact does the contribution/achievement have on the school community, students or

colleagues. How does the community benefit? (Note that "community" may include staff, and students) Describe any collaborative partnerships that resulted. How did the contribution/achievement improve student learning/engagement, service quality and/or

efficiency? How did the contribution/achievement enhance diversity, foster a positive school/workplace culture,

improve student learning outcome?

Provide EvidenceProviding evidence to support your professional statement is important. An example of how to use evidence to strengthen your nomination can be found below.

When do nominations close?Nominations close COB Thursday 11 June (Term 2, Week 7)

How do I submit my nomination?Nominations should be emailed to [email protected]

How do I know whether my nomination has been received?Nominators receive confirmation email advising receipt of the nomination. Nominees receive notification of their nomination, and are asked to accept and agree to the terms and conditions.

What happens next?When nominations are received they are considered by a short listing panel.

Short-listing and Judging ProcessEach short listing panel consists of a past ACT Public Education Awards: Celebrating Excellence winner and a senior officer from People & Performance. An assessment rubric is used as part of the process to short list the finalists who go on to the final judging round.

Once the short listing process is complete, three judging panels consisting of a Deputy Director General, Director and Principal meet to review the short listed finalists and select category winners.

The names of all shortlisted finalists and category winners are kept confidential until announced at the Award Ceremony on Thursday 6 August 2015.

The Award CeremonyThe awards ceremony will be held on Thursday 6 August 2015 at Gandal Hall at the National Gallery of Australia. All nominees will be invited at attend the Awards Ceremony where the category winners will be announced.
