    Northern Ireland is now among the biggest suppliers of food and drink to all retail sectors in Great Britain and the Republic of Ireland as well as most foodservice organisations in both markets.

    Award Winning FlavoursThe quality and innovation that has long underpinned Northern Ireland food and drink has led to many international awards especially, for outstanding taste.

    These include the prestigious Great Taste Awards organised annually by the UK Guild of Fine Food, the Blas na hÉireann (Irish Food Awards), the Irish Quality Food and Drink Awards and the Quality Food and Drink Awards.

  • Great Taste Awards 2015Northern Ireland companies have been among the most successful in the United Kingdom and Ireland in the Great Taste Awards over the past five years. In 2015, for instance, 70 Northern Ireland companies secured almost 200 gold stars.

    NI Supreme ChampionsMcCartney’s Butchers 2011: Silverside Corned Beef provided a new dimension to a traditional favourite.

    Hannan Meats 2012: Moyallon Guanciale offered a delicious un-smoked pig’s jowl that was dry-cured with fennel, thyme, peppers, spices, garlic and red wine.

    Irish Quality Food and Drink Awards 2015More than 30 products from 25 Northern Ireland companies, both large and small and across most sectors, were successful at the recent Irish Quality Food and Drink Awards 2015 in Dublin.

    The prestigious awards involving major retailers and discounters from across the island of Ireland saw clean sweeps for Northern Ireland in key categories. The Northern Irish winners included:

    Blas na hÉireann - Irish Food Awards 2015Northern Ireland also has a track record of achievement in the Blas na hÉireann, Irish Food Awards. A record number of gold medals were won by Northern Ireland companies in this year’s awards.

    The awards covered most categories including speciality cheese, one of the most intensely contested sectors. In addition, Northern Ireland producers dominated the cider categories.

    Spirited SuccessesCraft distilleries in Northern Ireland have won a series of international awards.

    Shortcross Gin, produced by Rademon Estate Craft Distillery, won a silver medal in the San Francisco World Spirits Competition 2015, RubyBlue Irish Potato Vodka, produced by Hughes Craft Distillery, was awarded a Gold medal at the prestigious Global Vodka Master 2015 competition and a silver medal at the prestigious New York World Wine and Spirits competition at the first entry.

    Bushmills Distillery, the world’s oldest licensed distillery, has also won a series of international awards over the years for its range of Irish Whiskey products.

  • Year of Food and Drink 2016Northern Ireland’s Year of Food and Drink 2016 will celebrate everything that makes the produce from Northern Ireland so good. The picturesque landscapes, time-honoured traditions, people and dedicated producers that make our food heritage wonderfully unique will be showcased in a comprehensive programme of activities in Northern Ireland and abroad.

    They will demonstrate that Northern Ireland is producing some of the world’s finest and freshest ingredients - from iconic breads to seafood, spirits and meat.

    The key objectives for Year of Food 2016 are to:

    • Enhance the reputation of Northern Ireland’s food offering • Celebrate Northern Ireland’s food culture • Dial up existing events and revive tired events • Tell our stories (produce, places and people) • Provide new opportunities for food linked experiences • Develop the quality of our food offering • Increase visitor satisfaction (with food and drink amongst visitors to Northern Ireland)

    Among targets of the year-long campaign is an increase in export sales to around £30 million.

    Each month is set to have its own theme from January to December celebrating Northern Ireland food and drink. These will be:

    January: Breakfast Month February: Love Local March: Heritage and Traditions April: Brewing and Distilling May: Landscape and Places June: Love Dairy July: Seas, Rivers and Loughs August: Love Northern Ireland Meat September: Bread and Baking October: Harvest November: Legacy and Learn December: Christmas and Premium Foods

    The focus on the industry will inspire trade growth and visitor spend as well as boosting Northern Ireland’s destination reputation for tourists by putting food and drink at the heart of the tourism experience.

    Part of the vision for the year is to celebrate the quality, innovation, creativity and entrepreneurship to be found across the globally competitive Food and Drink industry.
