Dear Parents,

First marking period is over and we have survived Hurricane Sandy, a near-miss Nor’easter and HGTV has planned and executed a surprise ambush of Andrew McConville in his classroom. Who says the fall is boring?

Along with the change of seasons, we are preparing for a change in the way that the Pennsylvania Depart-ment of Education administers their state-wide assessment of students. The Keystones are an end-of-course exam required for Algebra 1, Biology and Literature and have replaced the 11

th grade PSSAs as a

measure of accountability. Begin-ning with the Class of 2017, students will need to pass the Keystone Exams as one component of Penn-sylvania’s high school graduation requirements.

We will begin administering these exams in December to all 11

th grade

students. Note there will be some 9th

and 10th grade students who will also

be tested based on their completion of these courses (Biology, Literature and Algebra 1). A letter to the parents of those students who will be required to test will be sent home pri-or to the exams.

Parent-Teacher Conferences are scheduled for December 6 (see page 24). We will once again utilize Moo-dle for parents to sign-up online to meet with their student’s teachers. Scheduling a conference is a great way to stay informed, while demon-

strating your support for your child and your interest in his/her progress. We look forward to seeing you on the 6

th.

Another great way to stay informed is through our Home Access Center available to parents of EHS stu-dents. If you do not yet have access to HAC, please stop by the EHS Main Office to complete a request form. You will be asked to provide a photo id to complete the request.

For those who have HAC access and would like a hard copy of IPRs/report cards, you can either print out your own copy via HAC or students can go to the counseling office where they have a sign-up sheet for these requests. Home Access Center (HAC)

Home Access Center (HAC) applications are now being processed by the Main Offices at each school in the district. Parents/guardians of students attending EHS may stop by their school’s Main Office to complete an application and verify their identification. Your son or daughter will receive notice of your login and password in a sealed envelope in his/her homeroom. Note: In order to access HAC, a user needs a working computer, Internet access and a web browser. If you lose or misplace your sign-in and password information, you may stop by the Main Office to complete a new application. The information will be printed out and sent home in a sealed enve-lope with your son/daughter. Phone requests for this information will not be processed because photo identification must be verified. Thank you to all of the parents who have signed up for Home Access Center (HAC). You now have access to your child’s school information, including demographics, medical information, transporta-tion information, contacts, schedule, attendance, discipline, interim progress reports, report cards and live grade book.

Congratulations To:

EHS junior Nancy Dordal is spending her junior year of high school in Alicante, Spain. Thanks to the Emmaus Rotary Club, which sponsors the "Youth Exchange Program," she has been given the opportunity of a lifetime. Nancy departed from the United States at the end of August and will return next summer. So far, Nancy is thoroughly enjoying the Spanish culture and lifestyle. She has been improving her Spanish speaking skills by making new friends and traveling. Some of the places she has visited include beautiful beaches, ancient ruins, and the Santa Barbara Castle. To learn more about Nancy's adventures in Spain, visit her blog: www.alicanteexchange.tumblr.com.

Congratulations to Ashley Williams for being a standout member of our Emmaus High School marching band. Ashley is a senior this year and has been a member of the marching band (trumpet section leader) and Esquire Jazz Band since her sophomore year. This summer Ashley auditioned for the Macy’s Great American Marching Band and has been accepted as a member. She will be marching in the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade. It was a great honor to be chosen to play in this band. Both Mr. Denmead, and now Mr. Harrington, molded her into a great trumpet player and inspired Ashley to continue her music education into college next year.

Emmaus High School Hosts Middle States Visitors

On December 3 – 6, Emmaus High School will host five visitors from the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools. The visiting team will be reviewing the accreditation plan we submitted for approval and, ultimately, determine our status regarding accreditation. Below is an excerpt from the Middle State website: Accreditation is a valuable and prestigious achievement among traditional and nontraditional schools, colleges and uni-versities throughout the world. The U.S. Department of Education recognizes accrediting or state approval agencies, including Middle States Association, as a "reliable authority as to the quality of education.”

In recent years, accrediting agencies, including MSA, have revised their protocols and practices to reflect the latest re-search on school effectiveness, employ established world-class standards, and use volunteers trained in critical peer review. This approach provides an external validation of an educational institution's performance, whether it is serving preschoolers, high school students planning for college, adult community college students, doctoral candidates - or any-one in between. Accreditation is an impartial, third-party validation that an educational institution meets challenging, but achievable standards of quality, and provides a mechanism for continuous school improvement. It is a dynamic process which re-quires the commitment and involvement of a wide range of stakeholders. It engages the community and ultimately as-sures the public of an organization's integrity.

Although attaining high levels of student performance is every educational institution's primary goal, understanding the process by which those results are achieved - or not achieved - is equally important. A school’s effectiveness must ex-tend beyond the measures of student performance highlighted in government rankings or standings published in national and regional magazines. It must also take into account factors such as:

quality and continuity of the school’s leadership and governance

condition of school facilities

finances and fiscal stability

effectiveness of student services

health and safety

Staffing

long-range planning

If you would like to read more about Emmaus High School’s plan for the future, please click on the Middle States button on the front page of our website.

Fermata Nowhere Wins Bach Choir Competition! Fermata Nowhere, the all-male a cappella singing group at Emmaus High School won The Bach Choir of Bethlehem’s first a cappella competition, which was open to any high school or college ensemble. As the winning group, Fermata was invited to perform at The Bach Choir’s Gala Concert Fundraiser at Lehigh University’s Zoellner Arts Center in early October. The concert’s main attraction was the Swingle Singers, a world-class, multi-Grammy Award-winning singing group, perhaps best known for being featured on the pilot episode of Glee. Fermata spent the afternoon of the concert with the Swingle Singers, watching them rehearse and then participating in a master class with them. The evening was quite successful with the boys performing in front of a packed house at Lehigh’s Baker Hall.

EHS Spanish Club Celebrates Day of the Dead

On Wednesday, October 24, eleven students from the Em-maus High School Spanish Club visited Mrs. Merrill’s and Mrs. Van Ormer’s third grade classes to do an activity for Día de los Muertos. Día de los Muertos, or Day of the Dead, is a Mexican holiday in which the lives of those who have passed away are celebrated. Before October 24, both

teachers had already read a book about Day of the Dead to their classes, so when Spanish Club arrived the students were ready to share all that they had learned. Each high school student paired up with several third graders to make pasta skeletons. Both the older and the younger students had a great time. Some of the pasta skeletons were very creative, in-cluding dancing skeletons and several doing cart-wheels. October 24 was an afternoon filled with fun and learning about Día de los Muertos for both the third grade classes and the Emmaus High School Spanish Club.

Peer Tutor Program

The peer tutor program, coordinated by Mr. Grabfelder and led by Chris Neely, Shannon McConnell,

Shannon Philips, and Jason Mountain, works in conjunction with the National Honor

Society. The tutor program is designed to help students succeed academically by providing study

skills, test taking skills, and content centered tutoring by members of the National Honor Society.

Students seeking help in any subject area are encouraged to complete a tutor request form. Forms

are located in the tutor room (560), library, or on the school web site. Request forms

are to be returned to the tutor room.

For more information, please contact Mr. Grabfelder at [email protected].

As students prepared for the hurricane and upcoming winter, Key Club began to prepare for fall

events. Like past years, Key Clubbers sold labels during football games for one dollar each. Each

label went toward the Cops N Kids organization, which used all the money to buy new books for un-

derprivileged children in the surrounding area.

Not only did members raise money through labels, they also helped raise money at the local Barnes

and Noble. During this event, members painted faces and helped collect books. Many

customers bought books from the store, which they then donated to the EHS Key Club. Mr. Didra, a

teacher at EHS, held a magic show, which kept the crowd laughing and entertained the whole time.

Though Halloween may have been cancelled in some areas, it wasn’t for Key Club! This year, there

was another event at Coca Cola Park, where Key Clubbers dressed up and handed out candy and

other things to kids from Allentown and Bethlehem. And finally, dedicated Key Club members volun-

teered at another event during the beginning of the month held at the 1803 House in Emmaus. This

event featured local vendors, as well as a kids corner with face paint, pumpkin decorating and

games! During this month, Key Clubbers braved the cold weather and storms in order to help out

locally.

WE THINK PINK! In honor of breast cancer awareness month, the EHS Interact Club

donated its time by selling donor cards during all lunches for one week in October. The

combined effort raised $100.00, all of which was given to the Susan G. Komen for the Cure founda-

tion. Thank you to the faculty, staff, and students who made this possible through support

and donations.

Key Club volunteered to help at the 1803 House “Merrie Halloween” fall festival

on October 6, 2012. Laura Fetzer, chairperson for the event wrote a letter con-

gratulating some of the students for their hard work, friendliness, and their will-

ingness to help. The committee had only positive comments to make of these fine students. The

students that attended were Taylor Schubert, Sardis Disla, Pooja Joshi, Kevyn McConlogue, Katie

Zemaitaits, Brianna Bast, Jason Masino, Ray Henry, James Then, Nate Iobst, and Maneesha We-

erakkody.

From June 15 to June 18, seniors Erin Evans and Kassie Jacobs attended Camp

Neidig, a leadership camp designed to bring together talented high school stu-

dents. It's a weekend packed with new friends, fun, and team-building activi-

ties. The campers were also given the opportunity to listen to many inspirational

guest speakers throughout the weekend. At the end of camp, a closing ceremony

was held. When the weekend began, nobody seemed to know one another; how-

ever, by the end, campers formed lifelong friendships. Erin and Kassie are the

vice-president and secretary of the EHS Interact club, respectively. The Emmaus

Rotary Club generously sponsored their attendance at the camp.

Math Tutoring

The math department teachers offer math tutoring for all students during most periods of the school day. Students may check schedules posted in all of the math

classrooms to determine room locations for tutoring sessions. The students may obtain pre-signed passes from their math teachers, or they can get a pass to the tutoring locations from their study hall teachers. Each math teacher works with his/her students, but this math tutoring schedule offers an alternative for students when they cannot match their schedules with their classroom teachers.

Emmaus High School, along with the entire East Penn School District, will be celebrating Comput-er Science Education Week from Dec. 3 – 7. The U.S. House of Representatives recognize this week nationally in order to highlight the importance of this field in the 21

st century. The future of

our entire society depends on having well-trained people who develop new technologies, not just people who know how to use them. One statistic shows that by the year 2018, only 29% of all U.S. computer-related jobs will be able to be filled by qualified applicants. Eleven percent of all projected job openings today will need to be filled by only 2 percent of all 2010 grads. The US Department of Commerce forecasts that between 2008 and 2018 Network Systems and Data Communications Analysts are projected to grow 53.4%, Computer Software Engineers for Appli-cations have a projected 34% growth, and Systems Software Developers is a 30.4% growth. Em-maus High School has always had a strong computer science curriculum, but many students opt to take applications courses instead of programming courses to simply meet their requirements. Whether students choose to major in the field of computer science or not, students with some computer science background will have more job opportunities than those without.

In order to raise greater awareness this year , we are planning to have a Computer Science Showcase on Thursday, December 8, 2011, from 8:00-9:00 p.m. immediately following parent/teacher conferences. Extra credit will be given in some math and science classes for students who attend. There will be 4 areas available for you to interact and observe computer science in action:

Room 354 – There will be 25 middle-level and high school students demonstrating the best

programs they have written as students in the district. They will include examples of Visual BASIC, Java, Python, Scratch, Alice, Android Apps, etc.

Room 357 - Computer science professionals who live in our community will be available to

demonstrate or discuss projects they have worked on or new technologies they are currently developing and the educational backgrounds that they have. Please contact Ms. Carlen Blackstone at [email protected] if you are willing to participate.

Room 353 – We will celebrate Admiral Grace Murray Hopper’s birthday, which was De-

cember 9, 1906, with birthday cake and beverages. We’ll also remember the incredible legacy that Steve Jobs had. Both of them were true pioneers in the field. Handouts will be available. Students will also be available to assist the older generation with how to use their cell phones, Ipods, IPads, etc., since they all are more able than their parents.

Semicircle lobby - The Robotics Club will use the lobby area to demonstrate tasks that pro-

grammable robots can do. They compete in regional and international tournaments every year and have done quite well in the past. The students in the club are using RobotC which is a GUI version of the C language as well as ProE and Autodesk which

are CAD programs that create virtual environments.

EHS Celebrates 4th Annual Computer Science Education Week

Page 18: Celebrating National Computer Science Education Week

Page 18

(Continued from page 17) We are hoping that every student in the district is given the opportunity sometime during that week to see how computer science is needed for any field of study that they may be interested in. Young-er students will be exposed to how exciting this field of study can be since many stereotypes exist that deter students instead of encouraging them. This exposure will include classroom activities, videos, classroom discussion, or simply handing out information. Two former EHS grads were recently hired by Google (Michelle Burroughs and Piotr Fidkowski) and many others have made major contributions in this field over the years. Nine current students re-cently participated in a regional computer competition at Widener University during one of their four days off from school. They include: Keegan Daugherty, 10 Daniel Amankwatia, 10 Omar Ahmed, 10 Robbie Haag, 10 Alex Krause, 11 Kian Dangleben, 11 Robert Wang, 11 Andy Lang, 12 Joey Hutzayluk, 12 Six of our most advanced students competed at Harrisburg Area Community College. They include: Robert Bishop, 11 Eric Dai, 11 Brandon Smith, 11 Arun Doodnauth, 12 Jeremy Lim, 12 Taylor Loz, 12 Congratulations to all who participated. All computer science students also finished Contest 1 of the American Computer Science League’s international problem solving and programming contest. The results were not available yet for inclu-sion in this newsletter, but last year Emmaus qualified for the All-Star Contest in May with both its Intermediate and Senior Division 5-member teams. We hope that many more students will graduate from Emmaus High School with some background in how to program a computer and possibly pursue this lucrative, much needed, and ever-changing field of study. Please encourage your sons, and especially your daughters, who are good at prob-lem solving, mathematics, and/or science to consider taking as many courses as they can before they graduate especially if they are planning for college.

EHS Language Classes Help Donate 2000+ Items to Second Harvest Food Bank

Many people remember to donate to their local food bank during the holiday season, but it’s important to donate throughout the year as well. September was “Hunger Action Month” and the EHS World Language Clubs hosted a food drive to benefit the Second Harvest Food Bank of Lehigh Valley and Northeast PA. The French, German, Latin, and Spanish clubs promised to sponsor a breakfast or pizza party for the language class that had the highest average of donated goods per student in the class. By the end of the month, more than 2000 food and personal care items were brought in by EHS language students. THANK YOU to everyone who donated! Congratulations to Mr. Bisignani’s German 5/AP class who won themselves a pizza party by bringing in 204 items, with an average of 13.6 items per student.

EHS Angel Network

The EHS Angel Network provides basic assistance to students in need on an im-mediate, short-term basis. We believe that ALL high school kids are OUR kids, and we want them to succeed. We are currently collecting food and toiletries for approximately 240 baskets that will be distributed between Thanksgiving and the winter holiday. These baskets are for EHS students whose families are struggling due to extenuating circumstances, such as the loss of a job or a serious illness within the family. The EHS Angel Network committee would like to thank all the generous donors who have given support with food, clothing, and monetary donations. Your generosity and willingness to help the EHS com-munity is greatly appreciated. If you would like to help by making a food or monetary donation, please go to http://ehsangelnetwork.org/ for further information. Students in need of assistance may receive help by contacting their school counselor anytime throughout the school year. The EHS Angel Network is here to assist with school supplies, clothing, personal items, and any other needs that a student may have. All assistance is kept confidential.

YOU WERE HERE ! You walked the halls of Emmaus High School.

You lugged books around in a book bag. You carried your girlfriend’s books to class.

You hated gym class, especially when they taught ballroom dancing.

Lunch was at the same time everyday for every-one & you anxiously waited for it when you could

cross the street & eat at Kaldy’s Luncheonette or go uptown to Dundore’s to grab a hot dog. You went to the noontime dances in the gym.

You wondered if your science project

would embarrass you. You wanted to at least get a passing

grade at the science fair. You sang songs on the band bus &

wore your majorette boots to school on game days. You listened to John Phillip Sousa march

music at the football games instead of Broadway music. You communicated with each

other by meeting in the hall after class & not with a cell phone.

You went to a school assembly and the

entire high school population could fit in the auditorium at the same time.

You had one principal, one assistant principal, one guidance counselor, & one home/school

visitor who would keep you on track.

Some of you liked school…..some of you didn’t and could not wait to get out. In spite of every-

thing, you took something positive from the experience of being a Green Hornet.

You were here…..now you are there….with a bucketful of treasures, ambitions, trials, errors,

falls, trips, successes and achievements.

This column seeks to find you! We will be focus-ing on the achievements of the awesome EHS Green Hornet alumni. The concept is that we want to boast of the significant life experiences and goals achieved by alumni to share with current students, showing them that they too can soar if they just stick with it, listen to the guidance from their teachers, work hard, and follow their dreams. If you have anything you would like to include in this column, please contact us. Information is also sought on contact numbers, email addresses, etc. Photos to scan are helpful as well. Go back as far as you like….EHS grads from the 30’s, 40’s, 50’s, 60’s, when the school was housed in the old Jefferson building (Allen Heller, Principal) as well as recent grads would be a treat for us to share. Items such as who became a doctor, Mother of the Year, is in the movies, sings with a band, dances on Broadway, is a successful artist, playwright, wrote a book, ran for president, or became a shoe designer (this kid was probably drawing in class instead of focusing on classwork). All accomplishments are great, not only those that garnered national recognition. Alumni may be living or not. Let’s get this started, folks. We look forward to hearing from all of you. East Penn Information Line: 610-966-8480

East Penn School District implemented the Emergency Call Out System (Edulink) to notify parents and staff of important information relating to East Penn School District and its stu-dents. In the event of inclement weather, parents will receive a phone call at approximately 5:30 a.m., regarding the status of the school day. Parents may opt out of the Edulink System by re-moving the phone number in the Edulink field in HAC. If you do not have HAC, send a writ-ten note to your child’s school office. Please understand that removal from the systems means you will not receive calls relative to an emergency situation. In the event of inclement weather, the decision to delay openings or close school will be made before 5:30 a.m. by Dr. Seidenberger, Superintendent of Schools. He will then activate the Emergency Call Out System (Edulink), as well as the website, information line and WFMZ stations. For more information regarding when and how this decision is made, please refer to the district website www.eastpennsd.org. Select the tab “About Us,” and then “Info for Parents” from the drop down menu. On that screen, you will then select “Weather Related Closings.”

What is a Hallowed Hornet? Each month faculty and staff members nominate colleagues who they think contribute to a positive and successful school environment. All of the nominees’ names are then placed in a hornet hive designed by Regina Oster, EHS art teacher. At the monthly faculty meeting, Mr. Piperato draws a name from the hive. The winner receives his/her dream breakfast, delivered personally by Mr. Piperato, and a Hallowed Hornet certificate.

September: Claudia Risi obtained her BA in Spanish from Millersville University, and she is a Masters candidate at NOVA Southeastern University. Before the East Penn School District hired Mrs. Risi, she worked for the Brandywine School District in the state of Delaware and the Upper Darby School District in Delaware County, PA. She currently teaches Spanish II, Spanish IV CP, and Spanish IV Honors, and she advises the Zumba Fitness club. She is also a professional photographer and uses these skills to assist Mrs. Kuebler by photographing the headshots for the high school plays. This year, for the first time, the headshots will appear in the program. In her spare time, she enjoys spending time with her daughters. This year will be her twenty-first year of teaching.

Parent / Teacher Conferences December 6, 2012

6:00—8:00 pm at EHS

The parent/teacher conference schedule will again be an online process. The online registration process eliminates unnecessary paper, is in-line with our “Go Green” initiative and gives parents a real-time view of conference availability. In

order to sign-up to meet with your child’s teacher(s), you will need your child’s Moodle login infor-mation. Moodle can be accessed under quick links at the East Penn School District or the Emmaus High School web page. After signing on to Moodle, you will see a link for the parent/teacher conference schedule. Click this link and follow the directions on this page. Parent/teacher conferences have been changed to a new time. Please note conferences will begin at 6:00 PM and end at 8:00 PM, unless other arrangements have been made with your child’s teacher(s). The window for signing up for conferences is November 20—December 3, 2012. An Edulink call and ENews email will be generated by the principal as a reminder prior to this date.

If you have any questions or require assistance, please feel free to contact the Emmaus High School main office at 610-965-1650. Please note that the main office will only be able to assist those with NO internet access (verified per your HAC login information on file here at EHS).
