FROM RABBI WISE

Jews in Sports?Passenger: Tell me, do you have any light reading? Stewardess: Certainly, I have a leaflet on famous Jewish sports legends. This classic joke from the movie Airplane confirms the common myth that Jews are not great athletes. And certainly for most of our history, we did not count on sports as our greatest achievement. Simply surviving was most of the focus of our people, but in the 20th and now into the 21st century, Jews have made an impact on the sporting world. We have thrown off the shackles of anti-Semitism and embraced the new Jew – strong, agile and skilled. In the 1920’s and 30’s there were famous Jewish boxers in the ring including Max Baer and Barney Ross who were world champions. Baseball is probably our best sport featuring Sandy Koufax and Hammerin’ Hank Greenberg, both of whom were MVP’s and famously refused to play on the Yom Kippur – to great admiration of Jews and non-Jews alike. In my Jewish hero’s class that I teach to the teenagers we learned about some Jewish sports legends in Hockey, Basketball, Football, ice skating, swimming, and more – finding Jews who were proud of their athletic accomplishment and their Jewish upbringing. Coincidentally this year Ryan “Hebrew Hammer” Braun, a Jewish outfielder on the Milwaukee Brewers, won the National League MVP, the first Jew in 40 years.

Indeed I sense that in our congregation alone we have some excellent athletes. Laura, Sofia and Tommy Tencer and Gena Taylor all compete in competitive dance and gymnastics. Nicole Naglie is a world champion baton twirler. Justin Polgar caught the winning touchdown leading the Iroquois Ridge HS football team to the championship game last month, following in the footsteps of his brother Adam who led the team to the same game two years ago. Ben Rosenzweig, Jacob Machan and Colin Taylor all played football as well. Of course so many play hockey, including Ben, David and Rachel Hamburg, Haydn Zweig, Zach Geddes, Jay Levy, Jacob Wise – some in house league, some on rep teams. Our young people are involved in so many athletic competitions; I cannot possibly capture them all in one article. And of course I was proud to be a part of our SBE trophy winning ball hockey team last month that captured the inaugural Interfaith Cup. So when you ask on an airplane for some light reading, soon you’ll need a coffee table book of pictures and stories of Jewish sports legends. Rabbi Wise

FROM OUR EDUCATOR: CHERYL WISE

3 4

I n December, four of SBE’s religious school students participated in the Morris Black public speaking contest

at the JCC. Our students spoke beautifully and passionately about the holocaust, their grandparents, Anatoly Sharansky, and Why being Jewish is important to me. We were so proud of our students - not only taking the time to prepare a speech but for joining with 65 other Jewish students in grades 3-8 in this annual contest. We were all kvelling.

We thank Meghan Geddes, Alyse Nishimura, and all of our religious school

students for assisting in the December 23rd Candle Lighting ceremony. Your

participation and assistance helped make the evening a huge success.

This past fall the school purchased prayer books for our 3rd and 4th graders. The rationale was to begin putting texts in the hands of our students. The goal of our Hebrew program is to produce students who are prayer literate, for our students to be able to lead the prayers that are part of a traditional Shabbat morning service and understand the meaning and choreography behind the prayers. The students who received their very own first siddur were extremely appreciative. The students bring them back and forth from home to school so that they can pray from their own siddur. As a result our 5-7th grade students have been asking if they too can get their own siddur. Our hope is to provide every

student with their own personalized siddur that they can keep with them throughout their life.

In addition to the siddur students have been asking for a tanach as well. Since we have been focusing on the torah portion each week our students have shown an interest in reading the texts at home. As an educator I could not be happier with the students’ requests. However, as I have told them – everything costs money. If you are interested in assisting the school in attaining the mission of putting Jewish texts in the hands of our kids I would love to hear from you. Thank you in advance.

Friday January 13thServices 7 pm, dinner to followWe are trying something new for this Shabbat. We will be having a catered Shabbat dinner from Hamilton Kosher. The cost will be $5 for children and $10 for adults –but you must register in advance by January 6th to the [email protected] or call 905 -849-6000. Dinner will consist of chicken, chicken soup with matzoh balls and kugel.

The meal would be complete, if people would also bring some fruit or pareve.

For the service, Rabbi Wise will lead our Shabbat prayers on guitar and requests any adults or children who would like to join with their musical instruments to contact him prior to the service to receive the music and prepare. After the meal, we will conclude with Birkat Hamazon and some singing. We hope this new format will bring new energy to our synagogue Friday night Shabbat experience.

In honour of King’s mesage of hope and reconciliation, we have invited a local resident, Don Decoursay, who has lived in Oakville his entire life. He will be talking about growing up black in a mostly white town, seeing this synagogue being built, and the experiences that have made this town one mostly free of racism and hatred that unfortunately characterized so many other parts of this continent through the 20th century.

SYNaPlex ShaBBaT

On this unique Shabbat morning we have many things to celebrate so why not celebrate them all. When you go to a Cineplex movie theatre you have many choices so everyone has something to enjoy.

At our Synaplex Shabbat morning services, we invite public school teachers and coaches of our students to come and see what Judaism has to offer. Our religious school students will help lead the prayers.

We are also celebrating Shabbat Shira, the special Torah portion where the children of Israel crossed the sea to freedom and sang to give thanks. We will therefore have Aviva and our choir to enliven our service with compelling music.

Finally we will honour the choir for their wonderful singing and service to the community.

This Shabbat we also honour the one year yahrzeit of Avi Schaefer, an American college student who served in the IDF right after high school and was killed by a drunk driver as a freshman at Brown University.

After living in Chicago, Illinois for five years, we (Michael, Carina and Remy) moved to Oakville, Ontario a little over a year ago. Carina is originally from Newport, Rhode Island and I am originally from Boca Raton, Florida.  Remy was born in Chicago, and is 2.5 years old. We relocated to Canada for a great job opportunity working with Novocol Pharmaceutical in Cambridge, Ontario. I manage the international sales team. Our second son, Shane, was born in Oakville in September 2011. We had Shane’s bris at SBE.

We joined the shul because we were looking to be a part of a Jewish community. Being foreigners in a foreign land, the Jewish community is something that brings comfort and a sense of family to us. We immediately felt a sense of warmth and belonging after coming to SBE to inquire about membership and meeting Rabbi Wise. Through the Newburghs, the Wises and the Taylors, we have felt at home away from home.  We now look forward to embracing the SBE community. As our family grows here in Canada, we look to grow with SBE.

Sunday December 4 was a very “active” day for social action at SBE. Our Clothing Drive, in support of Safetynet Children’s and Youth Charities, was very successful. We collected 37 bags of clothing for this charity, including a wonderful selection of coordinating suits, shirts, and ties, which will be used by young men to attend job interviews. Bill Shields, the Director of Safetynet, wishes to express his appreciation to our congregation for their generous support and has said that the clothing “will be put to good use”. Also on that day, a large group of volunteers brought provisions to shul and prepared lunches and snacks, which were donated to Kerr Street Ministries’ after-school programme for youths. A huge quantity of food was donated to this programme from our wonderfully caring SBE Jewish community. On behalf of our Social Action Committee, “THANK YOU” to all of our volunteers and donors!

We were so excited to prepare a special Channuka Festive dinner served to the patrons of Kerr street ministries back on Thursday December 22nd.

Thanks to Marsh Davies who generously took on the role of chairing the event, which included planning, preparing, and serving dinner to roughly 80 people. On the menu was roasted chicken, vegetables, latkes made by SBE volunteer. For dessert was sufganiyot and sugar cookies donated by the Black Forest pastry shop in downtown Oakville, along with gelt and fruit.

The project generated a lot of enthusiasm from the congregation, with volunteers of all ages. We are so appreciative of the generous financial support from congregants to the SBE

social action fund. Our HOOCHY group, under the leadership of president Justin Polgar, came and helped with set-up, serving and clean-up. Rabbi Wise and his family was there to lead the Channuka blessings and candle lighting to share our rituals with everyone at KSM. Thanks to Marsha Davies, who has generously taken on the role of chairing this event, which includes planning, preparing, and serving a traditional festive Chanukkah dinner to roughly 80 patrons at the Kerr Street Ministries. On the menu that evening will be: roasted chicken, roasted root vegetables, mixed vegetables, latkes (made at SBE), and for dessert: sufganiyot, chanukkah sugar cookies (which were generously donated by the Black Forest Pastry Shop in downtown Oakville), chocolate gelt, and clementines.

This project has generated an enthusiastic response from our congregation, and we are grateful to have so many volunteers involved with this event. We are also very appreciative of the financial support that we have received through generous donations to the SBE Social Action Fund, which enable us to do our good work. Our HOOCHY group, under the leadership of its president, Justin Polgar, will have a contingent of its members present to do the set-up at KSM, and help wherever they are needed. On this special third night of Chanukkah, Rabbi Wise will lead the blessings and candle lighting, sharing our culture with everyone at KSM. Stay tuned for more about this very worthwhile event in the next edition of the Shofar!

Please mark you calendars for our next event, which also happens to revolve around “food”.

Some background about this…At our November 2nd SAC meeting, we were pleased to welcome Linda Middaugh, Director of Canadians in Support of Afghan Women, who gave a stirring presentation about the history and direction of this local organization. A few years ago, this charity rose to the challenge of raising the funds (over $100,000) and building a school in Afghanistan to educate both girls and boys, as well as to house a library and health center. Another important point that stuck out in our minds from this presentation was that this charity is 100% volunteer driven, so all funds donated go directly to their cause of education and support of Afghan women. Our committee members have decided to support their mission by hosting a

special event, a pot luck dinner, where attendees will bring a dish, and donate $25 (or more) to the charity, in place of spending the money in a restaurant. Our goal is raise $750, which would pay the salary of one teacher, for one year, at their school in Afghanistan. This will give us a nice opportunity to socialize, for a good cause! There will be some handicrafts, made by Afghan women, available for purchase, with funds going to the charity. Afghan recipes (Kosher style!) will be available for you to try your hand at! If you plan on attending, please RSVP to Frimmy Burnstein (905) 257-9043 or [email protected] by Friday, January 20. The location (to be announced) for this event will depend on our expected attendance!
