For many, particularly little ones, an inseparable segment of Diwali festivities is bursting crackers and burning sparklers. Never allow kids to use crackers without the supervision of an adult.

● Make it a point to buy good quality fireworks, preferably Eco-friendly, that assure of utmost safety. ● Since they tend to catch fire easily, refrain from wearing nylon, synthetic and silk materials.

Instead, opt for cotton clothing. ● Maintain a safe distance when bursting crackers. ● Most of all, to tackle the unforeseen, keep a first aid kit as well as a bucket of water / sand on-hand. ● Don’t use fireworks with a toddler in your hand. ● Do not place unused crackers near already used sparklers or matches.

Be careful while using crackers

It is common to see buildings completely illuminated with small electric lights on the occasion of Diwali, which conversely are energy gulpers. So why not give a break to this?Go for an effective alternative choice by way of candles, traditional earthen pots, or even LED lights.

The after-math of Diwali celebration is sadly disastrous air pollution, as an outcome of toxic elements released upon burning fireworks. But a small step from your part can go a long way to keep our environment safe. ● Choose a wide open space away from residential areas to burn crackers. ● Sound pollution is just hazardous as air pollution; hence avoid firecrackers that release nerve-wracking noise. ● Lastly, make sure that you tidy up your own mess while disposing it off in a responsible manner.

Say No to Pollution .

Diwali is one of the most awaited annual festivals because it’s a time to exchange gifts, enjoy good food, adorn home, and partake in great events. Without even a bit losing the fun and excitement of the festival, you can turn Diwali into a greener festival.

Instead of gifting a box of chocolates and salty nuts, give your dear ones a gift hamper filled with organic stuffs. Avoid relying on artificial sweeteners to improve the taste of sweets. Opt for healthy substitutes, such as, jaggery and coconut. Choose natural fresh flowers and colors in the form of rice powder, turmeric, fennel, and cardamom powders to make beautiful rangoli. Consider using recycled stuff made using old saris, bandhni dupattas, newspaper, tissue box etc to decorate your home. Cut down the use of crackers and encourage kids to partake in more fun and traditional activities like flower arrangement, puppet shows, music / dance competition, and drawing / coloring. So vow to yourself to celebrate this Diwali in a healthy way while keeping yourself as well as the environment safe.
