Like teaching? Like technology? The Computer Educator License
What is a Computer Educator License (CEL?)• It’s a add-on to your current license – whether you are an elementary
or secondary education major
• 18 additional credit hours beyond W200:• Four 3-credit courses (W210, W310, W220, and W435)• One 6-credit practicum during your student teaching semester
What is a Computer Educator License (CEL?)• Allows you to be a technology coach/facilitator in a K-12 school or
district in Indiana • This means you could be a coach or facilitator
for using technology in the classroom• helping other teachers in using and integrating
technology in schools
• Also allows you to teach computing classes: elementary computing labs, HS computer applications, programming, web design, etc
Why pursue a CEL?• Identifies you to potential employers as a technology specialist,
increasing your opportunities and potentially your marketability
• For elementary or secondary majors• Fulfills the requirement for elementary education majors in the new
program for a minor.• Teach computing classes in your age/grade range in addition to your
primary license
• Provides a basic introduction to being a technology leader/specialist in K-12 schools
What do we do in CEL courses?• Expand on some of the W200 topics, but work on longer-term,
more field based projects• Design your own computer lab• Create a website to help students learn something• Visit local schools and talk with teachers/administrators about how they
use technology (field experiences and field trips)• Create your own technology-related course and projects• Create programs, applications, and scripts for classroom use
• Learn through doing • Create things that you may make later as a teacher,
but with the support of your CEL instructors NOW• Work with tech and real K-12 students• Work on projects that can be more customized
to your goals and strengths
