Cedarmount Vets are pleased to now offer Versican Plus, an all-new canine vaccine range, as our standard dog vaccination. This modern vaccine has been designed to meet the challenges of both existing and emerging diseases for our patients, especially regarding Leptospirosis. animals. Leptospirosis is a bacterial disease spread via contaminated water or soil. Many animals, e.g. rodents, cattle, dogs and cats, can carry the leptospirosis bacteria in their bodies and shed the bacteria in their urine. Dogs can become very ill from leptospirosis but can also excrete the bacteria in their urine so there is a risk of passing infection to their owners. Leptospirosis is uncommon in dogs in the Bangor area but we want to provide the best possible protection for our dogs, and owners by updating our vaccination protocols. • 1 st Vaccination from 6 weeks of age with onset of immunity achieved at 9 weeks following the first vaccination for Distemper, Adenovirus and Parvovirus • Primary course 3-4 weeks apart allows protection from 9 weeks of age providing the opportunity for early socialization. • Immunity against the 4 serogroups of Leptospirosis, and Para-Influenza is complete 3-4 weeks following the second primary vaccination. • Parvovirus prevention utilising a new CPV-2b strain (the most prevalent strain in the UK). • Dogs already vaccinated and due their annual booster will still be protected as well as before after a single booster, (with more up-to- date Parvo virus protection), but will need a 2 nd vaccine, 3-4 weeks later, to give them full protection against the extra leptospirosis serogropus. • The second L4 vaccine for vaccinated dogs will be free of charge until September 2016. • The only tetravalent (4 serogroups included, previous vaccines only had 2) leptospirosis vaccine to deliver prevention against clinical signs and urinary excretion of established and emerging canine leptospirosis strains (except Grippotyphosa where prevention of clinical signs occurs but with a reduction in urinary excretion). • Versican Plus L4 includes the established serogroups L. Icterohaemorrhagiae, and L. Canicola and 2 new serogroups L. Australis and L. Grippothyphosa which have been found in canine samples across Europe and Ireland in recent prevalence studies.
