Cedar protection, designed with you
in mind.
Like you, we love Cedar.
Cedar is a ‘low maintenance timber’, however, it is not a ‘no maintenance timber’. This booklet is designed for you the Cedar home owner to clearly and quickly understand what your Cedar home needs to be beautifully protected year after year.
To keep your
Cedar looking
its best
and lasting
indefinitely, you
need a solid
maintenance
programme.

timber, if ever
there was
one.
What makes Cedar so special?
It is a miracle timber, if ever there was one. It’s a better insulator than brick or concrete, it keeps noise out, and - as every Cedar homeowner knows - it leads the pack in terms of durability.
That makes it one of the world’s favourite timbers
for cladding and doors.
Even though Cedar is a hardwood, it has a simple
cellular structure, with large and open cells
allowing space for air pockets to collect.
This gives cedar some amazing properties that
every Cedar homeowner benefits from, as shown
on the opposite page.
Cedar’s deadly enemies
By now you might be thinking that Cedar is a miracle substance - like the Superman of the timber world. Bullet Proof? Well, not quite.
Once it’s no longer living, like all organic matter,
Cedar starts to deteriorate.
Cedar’s worst enemy is not rain, or wind, or
city grime. It’s the sun. The New Zealand sun
in particular.
New Zealand’s UV rays are some of the harshest in
the world, and will eventually dry out any timber,
even Cedar. Not adequately protected, this leads
to fine cracks and roughening of the surface.
This damage makes toe-holds for mould, mildew
and lichen. Once they get established, greater
damage begins to occur, and the timber also
begins to look dirty and aged.
That’s why good maintenance is so important.
Cedar’s worst
enemy is
the sun. Left
unprotected,
UV rays will
structurally
damage the
timber.
The 4 costliest mistakes you can make
One of the most common misconceptions about Cedar is that it is a “maintenance free timber”. Cedar is low maintenance, not maintenance free.
Any timber cladding that is completely left and never maintained, will cup, split or warp to the extent water tightness issues can arise.
Mistake 1: Staining and oiling are the same thingWhen your Cedar has been under attack by the elements for a couple of years, its natural weather, insect and mould repellents need a top-up.
Oiling prolongs the good looks and weather resistance of your Cedar by penetrating deeply through the Cedar’s open cellular structure, replacing the natural oils lost over time. Traditional stain on the other hand sits on top of the timber and acts as a barrier to the elements without replacing the lost oils.
So both oiling and staining are effective, yet work very differently. What you need to know is that both treatments require regular recoating for the Cedar to stay protected.
Mistake 2: I can save money by putting off maintenanceUnfortunately, this just isn’t so. Though it has wonderful repellent qualities of its own, your Cedar performs at its best with regular “servicing”.
Yes you can put it off. But doing so won’t save money and may actually cost you much more. With regular servicing your Cedar can last forever.
So how often should you recoat? Every year? Every five years? Once a decade? Wood oil and stain manufacturers have very clear recommendations about how often you should recoat your Cedar. With over 20 years of Cedar maintenance experience, we also know what works best for your property. Please see our maintenance programmes for these recommendations.

Mistake 3: I don’t need an expertKiwis are a great nation of DIYers. And when you get down to it, how hard can it be to wash a house and slap a bit of oil or stain on it?
The truth is it’s a technical process that is easy to get wrong. Getting it wrong is expensive and heartbreaking. We frequently get calls from distraught DIYers who have taken to their Cedar exterior as they would a painted house with disastrous results.
TimberTECH technicians will clean your house thoroughly using eco-friendly surfactants and a proprietary cleaning process. We then apply the oil or stain with craftsmanship and the best technology available. The results are simply stunning.
Mistake 4: I’ll just let it silver off It’s true, the weather will silver your timber. But it will do it in a patchy fashion depending on the wind, shade and light patterns on your property. You’ll end up with a building that looks rough and unkempt. In fact, it’s only a matter of time before it goes black. What’s more, the sun will do all the damage we’ve already discussed.
If you want the silver look we can apply an oil to help achieve a uniform, silver weathered look (without looking shabby) while also providing the necessary protection from the elements. Stains and oils do come in a wide variety of colours.
Throughout New Zealand, in all weather conditions, from coastal to mountain, rural to bush, suburban to city, our maintenance programmes have been rigorously tested and proven across thousands of Cedar homes and buildings.
Your property is unique; from the design through to the location and it’s microclimate. That’s why each maintenance programme is tailored specifically for you and your property’s needs.
