    AUCTRAINING AND DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM IN CHALLENGING T IMES

    1. INTRODUCTION

    The American University in Cairo (AUC) has for over 90 years served Egypt and the Region by providing world class

    university education in a wide array of fields and specializations as well as providing executive and continuing education

    through its different centers and institutions.

    Given the challenging times Egypt is going through and the issues facing our constituencies in this ever changing work

    environment, the continuing education and executive education institutions and centers within AUC, have developed this

    portfolio of training and development programs for the business, government and civil society with the aim of providing

    support in these challenging times.

    The document includes relevant and focused programs from the following: Engineering and Science Services (ESS), GlobalAffairs and Public Policy Executive Education (GAPP ExecEd), International Executive Education Institute (IEEI), John D.

    Gerhart Center for Philanthropy & Civic Engagement, Management Center (MC), School of Continuing Education (SCE),

    and Social Research Center (SRC)

    The programs listed below are grouped into nine categories as follows: Strategic Planning; Leadership and Crisis

    Management; Role of Government; Media and Communications; Operations; Risk Management; Project Management;

    Contracts; and Monitoring and Evaluation.

    The electronic version of the document is divided into three main parts: The first is a matrix containing a listing of all the

    programs by category (for more information on each of the programs click on the program name to go to the

    corresponding section with detailed information on the program). The second section contains the program outline,

    dates and fees as well as contact information and web link for more information. The final section of the document

    contains a short summary of each institute/center as well as a web link to their page on AUC website. This document will

    PROGRAM SUMMARY AND BENEFITS

    Policy makers and practitioners need scientific evidence to guide policies, build more effectivepolicies and ensure accountability. The course aims to elucidate why monitoring and evaluationare important and to provide basic tools and skills for designing and implementing monitoringand evaluation frameworks for programs. This course introduces the evaluation definitions,concepts, models, approaches and focus. It covers the development of evaluation questions,designs, and illustrates the methods of developing and selecting indicators. It explains the

    evaluation sampling techniques, data processing and analysis. Trainees are introduced to thetools for measuring effectiveness and efficiency of interventions, as well as translating evidenceto policy makers. The course uses applied illustrations and many examples in the field ofdevelopment with special focus on poverty alleviation policies in the Arab region.
