WELCOME FROM OUR PRESIDENT ABOUT GOOGLE TECH CORNERS

Lance Pierce is President of CDP North America and has responsibility for strategy and delivery across the range of CDP programs in the United States and Canada. Based in New York, Lance joined CDP from Ceres where he was executive director and chief operating officer. Prior to this, he was the director of the climate and energy program for the Union of Concerned Scientists, and a former consultant to global companies, UN agencies, and international development organizations.

The Paris talks at COP21 in December attracted governments and policymakers of all kinds, the leadership of the world’s cities, large institutional investors and global corporations. But one of the refrains we heard as we walked the halls at the negotiating venue at Le Bourget was: “Where is Silicon Valley?”

Combating climate change requires Silicon Valley innovation, which is why CDP has partnered with Google to bring our annual Spring Workshop to their Tech Corners Campus. We are gathering global thinkers, sustainable investors, and government and business leaders to help propel sustainable solutions to climate change. Today’s workshop will facilitate a robust conversation about pivotal obstacles and opportunities in data, disclosure, strategy and performance across a range of sectors and sustainability issues.

Bringing our Spring Workshop to California is also part of CDP’s new

presence on the West Coast. We are establishing a San Francisco office to better support the companies and investors we work with, and to better link North American firms and cities working through the CDP disclosure platform with our programs in Asia. At CDP’s Spring Workshop we will highlight the CDP Disclosure Platform for information technology experts, venture capitalists and innovators in sustainability to utilize CDP data to drive change.

Google’s leadership has given citizens and business decision-makers instant access to libraries of information. Google believes in the powerful impact of new data and insight from new technologies. High-quality data on greenhouse gas emissions, water and deforestation lays the foundation for this continuing information revolution and sustainable innovation. CDP plays a critical role in facilitating that data exchange and supporting the growing move to climate-conscious investing based on this kind of data.

Moreover, CDP’s pioneering, investor-driven global platform for disclosure is helping to deliver on the promises of the Paris Agreement, making refreshed data and annual reporting central to measuring and tackling the emissions, deforestation and water issues affecting and affected by dangerous climate change.

For businesses seeking long-term stability and growth, sustainable innovation is imperative. Silicon Valley has the potential to solidify U.S. leadership in a low-carbon, fossil-free future if we can unleash our shared intellectual capital. CDP and Google hope these conversations will lead to such breakthroughs.

Sincerely,

Lance PiercePresident, CDP North America

MATERIALS Tech Corners architects were the first to implement Google’s advanced material health and transparency criteria, through the Healthy Materials Program. The design team requested Health Product Declarations from manufacturers to align with LEEDv4 Materials and Resources credits.

LEED

• Tech Corners Buildings 1, 2, 3 and 4 received LEEDv3 Platinum Certification.

• Tech Corners Building 5 and 6 received LEEDv3 Gold Certified.

• Lighting power was reduced by 46.73% and operates at .52 watts per square foot.

• Exceptional construction waste management resulted in 286.7 tons of material salvaged for donation/reuse and 7,355 tons of material recycled.

• 100% of the landscape is irrigated with reclaimed water and low flow interior fixtures contributed to a 46.4% potable water reduction.

• 172 parking spaces are allocated to EV charging.

SUSTAINABLE DESIGN STRATEGIES Interior Biophilic design principles are incorporated throughout each building.

Re-use Re-purposed wood doors from existing buildings are reintegrated.

Landscape Bioswales with seat walls and high albedo paving are incorporated throughout the site.

Location Site is adjacent to a Light Rail service.

Tech Corners is Google’s newest standalone campus in Sunnyvale. Each building is designed with a focus on user experience, health and sustainability. All six buildings are LEED Certified and offer unique exterior and interior spaces for work, collaboration and restoration.

UNITED STATES SECRETARY OF THE NAVYRAY MABUS

Ray Mabus is the 75th United States Secretary of the Navy, the longest to serve as leader of the Navy and Marine Corps since World War I. Throughout his tenure, Secretary Mabus has focused on four key priorities – People, Platforms, Power and Partnerships – that enable the Navy and Marine Corps’ unique ability to maintain the global presence that reassures our allies and deters our adversaries. Responsible for an annual budget in excess of $170 billion and leadership of almost 900,000 people, Secretary Mabus has worked to improve the quality of life of Sailors, Marines and their families; decrease the Department’s dependence on fossil fuels; strengthen partnerships with industry and internationally; and increase the size of the Navy fleet.

Leading the world’s only global Navy, Mabus has traveled over 1.1 million miles, visited over 140 countries and territories and all 50 states, to meet with Sailors and Marines forward deployed or stationed around the world, to maintain and develop international relationships, and to reconnect the American public with the Navy and Marine Corps, which he calls “America’s Away Team.” Mabus also directed the Navy and Marine Corps to change the way they use, produce and acquire energy, setting an aggressive goal of relying on alternative sources for at least 50% of their energy by 2020. In 2012, President Obama announced in his State of the Union address that the Navy and Marine Corps would purchase or facilitate the production of 1GW of renewable energy (50 percent of total shore energy) for use on Navy and Marine Corps installations by 2020. The Navy also demonstrated the Great Green Fleet in 2012, a carrier strike group in which every participating U.S. Navy ship and type of aircraft operated on alternative energy sources including nuclear energy and biofuels.

Secretary Mabus is a native of Ackerman, Mississippi, and received a Bachelor’s Degree, summa cum laude, from the University of Mississippi, a Master’s Degree from Johns Hopkins University, and a Law Degree, magna cum laude, from Harvard Law School. After Johns Hopkins, Mabus served in the Navy as an officer aboard the cruiser USS Little Rock.
