• Real time exchange of text-based data between a mobile device and a network server.
• Compatible with GSM USSD servers.• Mobile or network initiated.• Transmitted on a traffic channel (now) or
access channel (future).

• Control Plane– Provides position to a network application
(e.g. 9-1-1).
• User Plane– Uses IP to provide location to the mobile
device (or network application).

Short Message Service (SMS)
• SMS includes text messages and various non-real-time, low bandwidth data services (such as LBS session initiation).
• Three solutions:– Traditional circuit-switched SMS (ANSI-41/SS7) using C.S0015
message format.– Transport level mapping using IMS and C.S0015 message
format.– Application level mapping using an instant messaging client.
• All solutions inter-operate
