TreatmentThemedicationsusedforthetreatmentofpinwormaremebendazole,pyrantelpamoate,andalbendazole.Allthreeofthesedrugsaretobegivenin1doseatfirstandthenanothersingledose2weekslater.Pyrantelpamoateisavailablewithoutprescription.Themedicationdoesnotreliablykillpinwormeggs.Therefore,theseconddoseistopreventreinfectionbyadultwormsthathatchfromanyeggsnotkilledbythefirsttreatment.Healthpractitionersandparentsshouldweighthehealthrisksandbenefitsofthesedrugsforpatientsunder2yearsofage.

Repeatedinfectionsshouldbetreatedbythesamemethodasthefirstinfection.Inhouseholdswheremorethanonememberisinfectedorwhererepeated,symptomaticinfectionsoccur,itisrecommendedthatallhouseholdmembersbetreatedatthesametime.Ininstitutions,massandsimultaneoustreatment,repeatedin2weeks,canbeeffective.
