MEET THE 2016 TEAM CAPTAINS

Concordia head coach Shannon Currier has announced four captains for the 2016 season, seniors Sam Johnson (LB, Apple-ton, Wis.) and Dominic Nabak (S, Waukesha, Wis.) on defense and senior Darius Chapes (RB, Floral City, Fla.) and junior Matt

Bjork (TE, De Pere, Wis.) on off ense.

To become a captain, players had to go through an formal appli-cation process that also included reading three books, community service and obtain letters of recommendation. The team voted on the applicants who completed the process to select its captains. Three, Johnson, Nabak and Chapes were selected during the spring season with Bjork earning the distinction following fall camp.

SERIES NOTES: CONCORDIA 8, UPPER IOWA 2

The Golden Bears won the fi rst seven meetings played between the programs from 2006 to 2012, with Upper Iowa winning two of the last three in the series including last year’s matchup in Fayette, Iowa (52-20). Concordia has not lost at home to the Peacocks, holding a 5-0 mark in St. Paul including a 3-0 mark at Sea Foam Stadium, winning the last home contest 37-34 in overtime in 2014.

This Saturday’s matchup in St. Paul will be the fi rst time Concor-dia will face UIU under head coach Shannon Currier.

LAST MEETING, 2015: UPPER IOWA 52, CONCORDIA 20

Concordia utilized three turnovers and 211 combined return (kick/punt) yards to keep short fi elds, attempting to spoil Up-per Iowa’s homecoming at Harms-Eischeid Stadium, but the Peacocks off ense would soar in the game to off set CSP’s advan-tages.

Upper Iowa gained 598 yards on 95 plays of total off ense, accu-mulating 31 fi rst downs including 8-16 on third down leading to a 36:17 to 23:43 time of possession margin. UIU passed for 460 yards in the contest.

Meanwhile, more consistent short fi elds supressed CSP’s off en-sive output to 120 yards on 50 plays, but just eight fi rst downs and 2-12 on third down permitted the Bears from keeping fl ight with the host Peacocks.

Concordia scored in the fi rst quarter for the fi rst time in the sea-son in the 2015 campaign’s fi fth week when Alquawn Vickers returned a kickoff 91 yards for a touchdown to cut into UIU’s early 14-0 lead. Vickers had 188 all-purpose yards on the day in-cluding 146 yards via kickoff returns on three attempts for a 46.7 average. He added 3-36 on punt returns (12.0).

Later in the fi rst quarter, it was Jackson Dobbs and Chazz Rob-

erts teaming up for a strip-sack with Dobbs recovering on the UIU 9 yard line.

Darius Chapes darted up the middle for a nine yard touchdown on the next play with UIU blocking the PAT to preserve its lead, 14-13. Chapes had eight carries for 35 yards to lead the off ense.

UIU added another touchdown for a 21-13 lead at the quarter break and extended it to 31-13 late in the fi rst half when Jordan

Halverson forced and recovered a fumble deep in UIU territory, setting up another touchdown on the next play as Ben Sch-

ramski found Sammy Baucham for a 15-yard TD strike to make it a 31-20 margin at the half.

Concordia’s other forced turnover was a DeCeon Schumann interception, his second of the year. Josh Trifunov led the de-fense with three sacks as the team racked up six in the game. Trifunov also had nine tackles, 3.5 for loss. Halverson compiled a team-high 13 tackles in the game.

Schramski completed 11-29 for 93 yards and a touchdown and found Bruce Russell four times for 34 yards.

CSP wasn’t able to slow down UIU QB Dmitri Morales as he completed 38-48 for 460 yards and fi ve touchdowns, adding 32 rushing yards and another score. Morales connected with Jalen

Amis 14 times for 151 yards and two touchdowns and Jarred

Edmonds 10 times for 135 yards and two touchdowns. The Pea-cocks had a third 100-yard receiver, Trey MacTaggart (7-112).

LAST WEEK: MINNESOTA STATE 45, CONCORDIA 10

Concordia took the fi rst lead in the game as the defense forced a three-and-out on MSU’s opening possession. Concordia then drove 59 yards on 10 plays, with a Ron Johnson to Darius

Chapes 37 yard connection setting up Jonas Schenderlein for a 32-yard fi eld goal, hitting his seventh-straight FG to dating back to 2015 and his fi rst fi ve of the 2016 season.

MSU countered with a long drive sparked by a fourth down con-version from the CSP 22 yard line, but Concordia’s defense held in the red zone as the Mavericks settled for a 29-yard fi eld goal to tie the game late in the fi rst quarter.

A three-and-out by CSP led to a blocked punt which MSU re-turned for a touchdown to grab the lead before the quarter break. Alquawn Vickers would return the ensuing kickoff 43 yards with R.Johnson adding an 11 yard keeper to put CSP in MSU territory, but the drive stalled and Schenderlein hit the cross bar from 55 yards out for his fi rst miss of 2016.

Moments later, a 45-yard run by MSU running back Virgil Ham-mond set up a 1-yard touchdown and MSU suddenly led 17-3 after CSP nearly had a 10-6 margin just a few plays earlier.

Concordia moved back into Maverick territory once again again but wasn’t able to convert a fourth and 13 from the MSU 38 and the Mavericks scored with 40 seconds left in the half to push the lead to 24-3 in a half that was more closely contested than the score indicated.

In the second half, CSP started with the ball and Chapes would again spark a scoring drive rushing fi ve times for 31 yards in-cluding a 14-yard touchdown. CSP converted a pair of third downs and a fourth down behind R.Johnson who made two throws to Sammy Baucham and had a nine yard keeper to keep the drive alive.

The big drive to open the second half consumed 7:27 of clock as CSP mounted 15 plays to move 76 yards to seemingly halt MSU’s momentum.

But the Mavericks wouldn’t be denied on off ense on home-coming, scoring on their next drive and using another blocked punt to set-up another quick score to push a 24-10 game out of reach, 38-10 as Concordia didn’t convert a fi rst down the rest of the day.

Chapes led CSP with 126 combined yards against the histori-cally stout MSU defense. He rushed a career-high 19 times in the game, compiling 89 yards and a touchdown while adding a 37-yard reception and his work led to both scores.

NSIC tackles leader Sam Johnson had another strong day to lead CSP’s defense with nine tackles to preserve his league lead.

ABOUT THE PEACOCKSThe Peacocks have moved the ball well this year, rank-ing 30th in the country with 457.5 yards of total of-fense per week. But opponents have been nearly as eff ective with 445 yards per game as UIU ranks 135th out of 170 programs.

But what has turned UIU into a 1-5 team as opposed to a stronger W-L record is red zone effi ciency. Upper Iowa converts just 52.4% of trips to the red zone into points (160th in DII) and have only turned 21 trips inside an opponents 20 yard line into touchdowns 10 times. Con-trast that with a stout red zone defense that ranks 13th in the country and second in the NSIC by limiting op-ponents to score on 60 percent of trips to the red zone.

UIU is second in the league in tackles for loss (7.8/game) and fi fth in sacks (2.83/game) and is sixth in the league in fewest TFL allowed (5.33/game). But they also rank last in the NSIC in turnover margin (-7), committing 19 turnovers while taking away 12.

UIU QB Dmitri Morales guides the high fl ying of-fense, ranking eighth in the country in completions (25.8/game) and 20th in passing yards (282.8/game) with 10 passing and three rushing TDs. He’s 13th in the country with 322.2 yards of total of per game.

The Peacocks have a pair of receivers over 400 yards in Jalen Amis (438) and Jarred Edmonds (406) with Edmonds adding fi ve touchdowns.

Derrick Portis leads the ground game with 481 yards at 6.41 per carry and seven touchdowns.

The defense is led by three of the top-10 in the NSIC in TFL: Jojo Simpson (1.3/game, 2nd), Zach Gardner (1.1/game, 8th) and Zach Ries (1.1/game, 9th) with Simpson and Gardner ranking 3rd/6th in the NSIC in sacks, and Gardner 3rd in the league in tackles (9.8/game).

MEET THE STARTING QB: RON JOHNSON

Entering fall camp, Concordia had a four player competition for the quarterback position with junior transfer Ron Johnson earning the starting role.

Originally a CSP student-athlete in 2013, Johnson redshirted before transferring to be closer to home at College of DuPage in the Chicago area. He played last year at De Anza College, pass-ing for 1,466 yards and 11 touchdowns including a long of 98 and a pair of rushing touchdowns with a long run of 40.

In week two at UMC, Johnson broke loose by completing 14 of his fi rst 15 including a string of 13-straight completions on his way to an 18-27, 239 yard and three TD passing performance with a TD. He followed it up with 252 passing, 70 rushing and

fi ve combined TDs (3 pass, 2 rush) in a shootout loss to UMD.

Behind him will be redshirt freshman Maxon Hutton and soph-more Trevor Tillett. Last year, Tillett started the fi nal four games and compiled 690 yards with four touchdowns through the air in his fi rst taste of college action. Hutton took his fi rst career snaps in week two at UMC and has appeared in four games in 2016. He attempted his fi rst career pass in week fi ve against WSC, completing 5-8 for 52 yards. He’s also rushed 11 times for 46 yards on the season, adding 98 yards of total off ense to John-son’s total as the starter.

VICKERS COMES OFF RECORD SETTING CAMPAIGN

Sophomore Alquawn Vickers was named a 2016 Lindy’s Pre-season All-America Second Team selection after being a Don Hansen All-America Third Team performer as a breakout red-shirt freshman. The NSIC Newcomer of the Year and reigning All-NSIC First Team all-purpose star led the NCAA with 1,119 combined kickoff /punt return yards and set the single season program record with 998 kickoff return yards.

The standout returner also was one of Concordia’s top receiving threats a year ago with a team-high 37 catches while ranking second with 463 yards and three receiving scores.

In fi ve games in 2016, Vickers has been involved in a variety of ways and is second on the team in all-purpose yards with 511. He’s accounted for 39 rushing, 111 receiving, 6 punt return and

Originally the eighth head coach of Concordia football in 2000, Shannon Currier returned to lead the program for his second stint in December, 2015.

He entered his fi fth season leading the team in 2016 and remains the program record holder for career winning percentage.

In his fi rst stint, he compiled a 32-12 (.727) record and brought the program its fi rst NSIC Champion-

ship in 2003 when he was named NSIC Coach of the Year. The conference title also brought a berth in the Mineral Water Bowl, the fi rst postseason game in school history.

He coached Concordia to four consecutive winning seasons and is the only coach in program history to achieve the feat - consecutive or cumulative.

THE GRIFF MYTH - PROTECTING HOME TURF

The team also established the longest home winning streak in school history under his guidance. Known to the teams as the “Griff Myth,” Concordia tallied 19 consecutive home victories down the street at Griffi n Stadium. The streak began in 2002 and stretched two years after Currier left through the 2005 sea-son, fi nally falling at the beginning of 2006.

In Currier’s fi rst four years, his teams only lost two home games, producing a record of 18-2 after winning his fi rst and last nine home games.

He opened his return with a 17-0 shutout win over U-Mary in 2016, snapping a 6-game home losing streak and a school re-cord 8-game overall losing streak.

CAREER AT TRUMAN

Following the program’s 2003 NSIC Championship run, Currier ac-cepted the head coach position at Truman (State) University where he turned a losing program into a pair of 6-5 winning campaigns in his third and fourth seasons.

His tenure was highlighted in his third year, leading the Bull-dogs to a 6-3 record in a strong MIAA, fi nishing fourth in the league. He left the program following a 4-7 season in 2008 with a 20-35 overall record.

PRIOR TO REJOINING CONCORDIA’S SIDELINES

Following his departure from Truman, Currier spent seven years working outside of the coaching profession as a senior sales manager with iHigh.com working to build a digital platform for high school sports, reaching up to 1.5 million Minnesotans in his fi nal year with the company.

He arrived at Concordia in 1999 as off ensive coordinator and recruiting coordinator for former head coach and athletics di-rector Dan O’Brien, now an assistant coach for the University of Minnesota.

Prior to joining Concordia, Currier spent two years each in similar roles at Southwest Minnesota State and Minnesota Crookston following his start in college coaching at Bemidji State as an off ensive graduate assistant where earned his mas-ter’s degree in physical education.

A native of Cosmos, Minnesota, Currier was a quar-terback at Hamline University where he graduated with a degree in physical education in 1993.

MAEDKE BREAKS PUNTING RECORDS IN 2015

In 2015, Sam Maedke frequented the fi eld and he was excel-lent in numerous opportunities in his fi rst year as the punter. Maedke set school records for most punts in a season (87) and punting yards in a season (3,187) and also the single game re-cords of 12 punts (twice) and the top two single game punting yards records (469 & 456). He ranked seventh in the NSIC with a 36.6 average, landed 18 punts inside the opponents 20 and had four 50-plus yard punts.

In 2016, Maedke has seen less work with 26 punts in six games, averaging 40.6 per punt with nine of his punts fair catches, six inside the 20, fi ve of 50-plus, one touchback with a long of 57.

GUSTAVESON & VICKERS THE EARLY FAVORITE TARGETS

During preseason interviews, head coach Shannon Currier re-inforced two concepts: fi nding ways to involve Alquawn Vick-

ers in the off ense and that freshman Marcus Gustaveson will be an immediate force in the Northern Sun.

Last year, Vickers tied for the team lead in receptions (37) and was second on the team in receiving yards (463) and receiv-ing touchdowns (3) although his fi ve total touchdowns led the team.

In 2016, Vickers has been involved in every aspect of the game as a ball carrier. He has nine rushes for 39 yards, 15 receptions for 111 yards, 16 kickoff returns for 355 yards, two punt returns for six yards and completed a pass for a 73-yard touchdown. He’s second on the team in receptions despite missing a game.

Gustaveson broke loose against UMD with seven catches for 115 yards and two touchdowns while drawing four pass inter-ference calls against the UMD corners.

The duo leads the team in catches, Gustaveson with 17-237 with Vickers adding 15-111. They are the only two with double-digit receptions through six weeks although six diff erent receiv-ers have at least 100 receiving yards on the year.

Of the team’s 83 completions, 13 diff erent receivers have caught passes, 10 have at least three catches, eight have at least four receptions and fi ve players have reached the end zone via pass.

BIG TRADE: DECEON FOR VANTWON

During spring practice, the coaching staff made a key swap with Vantwon Melton moving from wide receiver to corner-back while DeCeon Schumann moved from corner to receiv-er. Schumann caught his fi rst two passes for 49 yards at UM Crookston in week two including a long of 35. Melton also made his fi rst appearance at corner in week two for the defense.

In his fi rst two years as a WR, Melton had 25 catches for 220 yards and a touchdown, hauling in 17-145 with the TD in 2015.

Formerly a cornerback, Schumann had 33 tackles including two interceptions taking one back 42 yards for a touchdown in a road win at Minot State last year. He was in on seven passes defended in 2015. This year, he has three catches for 79 yards, averaging 26.2 per catch with receptions of 35, 30 and 14 yards.

OFFENSIVE LINE DRIVES THE PRODUCTION

The team’s ability to execute off ensively will be driven by an off ensive line that includes one returning starter, Terrell Taylor who started all 11 games as a redshirt freshman at right tackle and has started the fi rst three games of 2016 at left tackle.

The off ensive line has been the same starting fi ve three weeks in a row, with Taylor joined by freshman Tanner Haechten (LG), senior Conner McGraw (C), junior Samuel Kessler (RG) and

sophomore Ben Lawrence (RT).

Additionally, freshmen Mario Espinoza and Ethan Aune have seen signifi cant early season playing time. Redshirt freshman Hunter Kauff man returned to the lineup with a large portion of reps in week four at Northern State and earned the start at right guard in week fi ve against Wayne State.

DEFENSIVE LINE FEATURES EIGHT MAN ROTATION

The top feature of the 2016 defensive line is its depth and how the coaching staff has utilized its mix of experienced upperclass-men and youthful impact players. The starting line features two seniors, a junior and a redshirt freshman while the second wave of four includes a senior, sophomore and two true freshmen.

The statistical leader of the group is senior Ryan McKee (27 TT, 3.5 TFL, 2.0 SK, 1 BLK). Junior Chazz Roberts lines up on the interior with McKee and has 19 tackles & 4.5 TFL. Re’Shon How-

ard (21 TT, 2.0 TFL, 1 INT) is on one end and redshirt freshman Kelly Pierce is the top playmaker in the backfi eld on the team with 5.5 TFL and 4.0 sacks (19 TT).

Backing them up are, true freshmen Dylan Wood & Cole

Riemer, sophomore Adam Miller and senior Gerardo Figueroa

LINEBACKERS RACKING UP TACKLES

Led by the league’s leader in tackles, Sam Johnson and his 10.6 tackles per game rank 14th in the country. He’s been consistent, recording at least eight tackles in all fi ve games he’s played with three double-digit eff orts for a team-high 53 tackles despite missing a game.

In the one game he missed, junior JJ Przybylka fi lled in with a 17-tackle performance in a week two win at UM Crookston. The 17 tackles are fourth most in a game in school history and tied for the NSIC single game high in 2016. He’s fourth on the team in tackles with 31 despite playing behind Johnson at MLB.

The team has produced six double-digit tackle eff orts between four diff erent players - all linebackers.

Redshirt freshman Antonio Zepeda made 14 tackles in his de-but against U-Mary in week one and is secondon the team with 34 on the season.

Senior David Reed returned to the fi eld in week four at North-ern State, making the start at outside linebacker to lead the team with 14 tackles in the game and has already racked up 28 tackles in three games.

Junior Billy Brown started the fi rst three games of the year and has continued to see a large amount of snaps following Reed’s return. He remains fi fth on the team with 30 tackles on the year including 3.5 for a loss and a sack and returned to the starting lineup in week six at Minnesota State.

NABAK PATROLS THE SAFETIES

Senior captain Dominic Nabak had a huge end to the 2015 season, making 10-plus tackles in four of the last six games in-cluding a career-high 16 tackles in the fi nale at Augustana. He opened 2016 strong with seven tackles including one for a loss in a 17-0 shutout win over U-Mary, had a 70-yard INT for touch-down in a week 2 win at UMC and remains third on the team with 33 tackles, leads the team with two INT and is second with four passes defended (INT + PBU).

Sophomore Brandon Russell is the other starting safety and has made 29 tackles with 3.0 for loss and a forced fumble.

Freshman Brian Lanier continues to make a larger impact, making 23 tackles in his fi rst six career games, earning his fi rst career start in week six at Minnesota State.

FORE & JOHNSON TEAM UP AT CORNER

Junior Jamie Fore and senior Jonathan Johnson have teamed up as the starting corners in 2016. Fore is a sure tackler with 28 stops along with a blocked FG, forced fumble at the goal line, tackle for loss and two pass breakups.

Johnson’s early play has made a huge impact as he’s ranked fi fth in the NSIC with eight passes defended (INT+PBU). He’s broken up seven passes and has an interception for touchdown (34 yards) against UMD.
