The restaurant industry isbooming, with new restau-rants entering the challengingfoodservice market everyday. The National RestaurantAssociation says restaurantsin the United States’ generateroughly $2 billion in sales ona typical day.

Food servers are amongsome of the hardest workingemployees in the foodserviceindustry, but sometimes theirefforts go unrecognized. Thefollowing are a handful ofways diners can show theirappreciation to the men andwomen who work hard to en-sure their customers enjoytheir dining experiences.

1. Recognize that waitingtables is no easy task. Wait-ing tables is both physicallyand mentally demanding.

Servers spend hours on theirfeet carrying and balancingplates of food during theirshifts. Servers also must an-ticipate the needs of dinersand do their best to accom-modate them. Acknowledgethat servers’ jobs are not easywhen dining out, and expressyour gratitude for their hadwork whenever possible.

2. Recognize that slow

food often is not servers’faults. Very often a foodserver has no control overhow fast the food comes outof the kitchen. A very busymeal service can stall an in-experienced kitchen. Don’tblame the server because thefood took longer than ex-pected to arrive on your table. If you’re in a hurry, let theserver know in advance so heor she can work with you.

3. Look up at your server.Eye contact shows respectand it will help get your orderacross clearly — reducing thelikelihood of a mixup regard-ing your order.

4. Put down your phone.Distracted diners are some-times to blame for slow serv-ice. In 2014, a popular NewYork restaurant took matters

into its own hands after con-stant complaints of slowservice. After examining sur-veillance footage of the din-ing room from 2004 to 2014,the restaurant owner discov-ered the wait staff hadn’tchanged its techniques, butthe customers’ use of cellphones had slowed tableturnover from one hour andfive minutes to one hour and55 minutes. Taking picturesof food, texting before order-ing or asking a server to takea group photo can contributeto slower service, which putsadded stress on servers.

5. Holidays can put amonkey wrench in restaurantflow. Certain times of theyear are popular for diningout. Mother’s Day and Fa-ther’s Day, Valentine’s Day,and winter holidays are busytimes for the restaurant busi-ness. Diners should recog-nize this and exhibit extrapatience when dining outduring these busy times ofyear. If you aren’t up for thecrowds, abbreviated menusand other factors that comewith holiday dining, chooseanother day to go out.

6. Tip with courtesy andrespect. Tips are important toservers because their incomemay not be steady. Somerestaurants do not pay serversminimum wage, expectingtheir salaries to be offset bytipping. Tip according to howthe service was, not the tasteof the food or beverages. A15 percent tip is customary, but you may want to tip 20percent for exceptional serv-ice. Don’t dine out if youcannot afford or do not planto tip.

7. Ask ahead of time ifyou need a split bill. Multiplechecks can prove time-con-suming. Address this needearly on and pay as punctu-ally as possible.

The restaurant business isfast-paced and challenging.Customers can do their partby being patient and pleasantpatrons and showing theirservers the respect they de-serve. TF161807

(NAPSI)—If you’reconsidering a career in thefood and hospitality indus-try—or already haveone—a new tool can helpyou take a big bite of suc-cess.

That’s because the Na-tional Restaurant Associa-tion EducationalFoundation (NRAEF)—the philanthropic founda-tion of the NationalRestaurant Association—created a Food and Bever-age Service CompetencyModel. It’s the first everdesigned expressly for therestaurant and food serv-ice industry.

That industry trainsAmerica’s workforce, of-fering one in three Ameri-cans their first job. It’salso one of the nation’slargest employers. Cur-rently, a million restaurantand food service outletsemploy more than 14 mil-lion workers.

The skills learned anddeveloped within the in-dustry range from employ-ability to technical andbusiness leadership andmanagement skills. TheModel charts the knowl-edge and abilities neededto start and move up inrestaurant sector employ-ment. And, it demonstratesthe personal effectivenesscompetencies, academiccompetencies, workplace

competencies, industry-wide competencies, indus-try-sector competencies,occupation-specific re-quirements and manage-ment competenciesnecessary for success.

The Model, funded inpart by the NRAEF, is partof the U.S. Department ofLabor Employment andTraining Administration’sIndustry CompetencyModel Initiative and pro-files the employability andtechnical skills essential to

achieving lifelong careersuccess in the industry. It’sinteractive and availableon the U.S. Department ofLabor’s CareerOneStopwebsite (www.dol.gov/dol/topic/training/on-estop.htm)—along with26 other high-growth in-dustry sector competencymodels including con-struction, energy, healthcare, retail, and advancedmanufacturing.

Each model helps as-piring employees and en-

trepreneurs understandwhat they need to knowand master to advancewithin each industry andthe fruitful career path-ways available.

Our Chesterfield Countylandscapes down the high-way are some of the mostbeautiful around South Car-olina. The pastures with thecattle and horses grazing onthe green beauty, some ofthe old homes and historicbuildings, or the land withthe ponds on them with thetree branches hanging overdancing in the mirror ofwater are just a few of thebeautiful scenes around us.However, the beauty isbeing damaged by thosewho don’t care and are just

plain trashy throwing outtheir debris from their vehi-cles.

Along with seeing all thetrash on the sides of theroads here, I have observedmy neighbor down the roadout on the highway everyweekend with bag and stick

in hand picking up themounds of trash thrown outby passing motorists. LongMiddle School softball andbaseball teams have beenout on the local highwaysfor the last two weeks pick-ing up trash. I have seenposts by individuals onFacebook disgusted withthe trash being thrown outon the roads they live onand them getting out andpicking up the trash. I knowa family that organizes aday to get out and clean acertain highway of the trashbecause it is so bad.

All these gestures ofhelping keep the highwayclean is great but the sad

thing is, it shouldn’t have tobe done by these people be-cause the motorists shouldnot be throwing out trashfrom their vehicles onto thehighway. Each vehicle thatgoes down the highway hasto stop from time to time toget gas. Each station aroundhas trashcans at the pumps. How difficult is it to take itout of the vehicle and placein the trashcan there? Betterstill, when you get homethrow it in your yard. No re-ally you should just take itout and put it in your trash-can.

Our South Carolina areahas many beautiful land-scapes and wildlife for us to

enjoy. Why do some peoplefeel the need to throw outtheir trash from the vehiclesand dirty up our area or anyarea as far as that goes?

After my family has ourgreat Thanksgiving feast,we all go for a walk throughthe woods. We come out ofthe woods on to the high-way near Maranatha churchand the airport. The adultsspend too much time tellingthe children not to pick upthe enormous amounts oftrash on the sides of theroad we are walking on andtelling them how nasty it isthat we sacrifice qualitytime due to the trashiness ofthose that have thrown outnot only paper trash, cans, cigarette butts, and otherthings I won’t mention.

I would like to think andhope that writing this articlewill help but my faith inthose is so small, I doubt

they take the time to read apaper or a long article.Maybe someone in the legalsystem will read this and domore to avoid motorists ordeter them from continuingto throw out their trash onour beautiful scenic roadshere in the county.

If you are reading thisand have been throwing outtrash without a thought, please start thinking. Thereis a trash place on Tec road, only costs a little bit ofchange to take your trashand leave it or better yettake it when you get yourcar gassed up and place inthe trash can there. Togetheras citizens and law enforce-ment, we can once againkeep our highways beauti-ful. It’s a great day in SouthCarolina; keep it a beautifulone too.

I may be contacted at [email protected].
