The fi eld is defi ned by job titles our grandparents would have been familiar with, from electricians to welders, but today’s skilled tradespeople display a distinctly fresh relevance. Auto mechanics consider computers just another tool, HVAC techs are already integrating green techniques into their work, and shipbuilders transform metal and wiring into extremely sophisti-cated vessels that boast state-of-the-art systems from bow to stern. Most importantly, in a still-slug-gish economy hemmed in by tepid job growth numbers, it’s a sector that shows remarkable resilience to layoffs and outsourcing. Add in good pay, a steady demand for new workers, and excellent pathways to advancement and it’s no surprise that job hunters ranging from new high school grads to career switchers are nixing business suits for hard hats, tool belts and weld-ing torches. “The trades are the fastest way to get into a really worthwhile career that pays very well,” confi rms George Decker, director of talent acquisition at Northrup Grumman Shipbuilding-Newport News. “If someone is looking for a career that’s really substantial, that’s what we offer here. Our employees make a very good living and we have employees who have been here for over 40 years.” With large numbers of skilled tradespeople from the baby boomer generation rapidly approaching retire-ment age, employers are already cast-ing about for replacement strategies for these critical workers. “In fact, this has created a huge anxiety in some of the larger companies for a couple of reasons,” says Theresa Bryant, vice president for workforce development at Tidewater Community College. “They’re losing their most highly-skilled workers as they retire and they need that pipeline for the future lead-ership of the company at the manage-rial or executive levels. In many cases, those leaders actually started in a trade because it was important that they un-derstand the complete operation and they’ve moved up through the years. “Now their workforce is aging, just like everybody else’s, but you can’t hire

a replacement right away who is com-pletely knowledgeable. You’re going to have to move through a pathway. Ithink that is part of what has stirred the renewed interest in programs like reg-istered apprenticeships.” Despite the fact that the trades make excellent career choices, they are often overshadowed or out-promoted by other fi elds. “When you look at our craftsmen in general, they tend to be a national asset,” says Decker, “and one of the issues we have with the school systems is their emphasis is to talk with students about going to college to get a degree.” But learning a trade crucial to our economy and earning a degree are not mutually exclusive. “In fact a sig-nifi cant number of our employees thatcome through as general employmentbecome craftsmen and then go on to earn an associate’s degree or a bach-elor’s degree through our tuition as-sistance program where we pay for the credits, fees and books,” says Decker. This is a fi eld that features hundreds of job specialties that cater to a wide

variety of interests and it is wide open to career switchers as well as new graduates looking for their fi rst job. Training programs that lead to required certifi cation orlicensure run the gamut from a few classes stretch-

ing over several months to apprentice-ships that can run up to fi ve years de-pending on your course of study. “We have people in our programswho are coming back to get specifi ctechnical skills, even people who al-ready have degrees in other areas,”says Bryant. “And with the plant clo-sures, like Ford and International Paper, some of the people who worked there are choosing to go into fi elds that can’tbe sent offshore, such as auto mechan-ics and other things you have to have done locally. “It’s not that there are no job op-portunities for someone with a degree in history right now, just that they are not plentiful. But where we’re seeing people in training programs that actu-ally end up with jobs are in the career and technical areas. People in those ar-eas that we work with are getting hired and that’s important.”

There are plenty of job categories that can be outsourced – auto-motive mechanic is not one of them. This hands-on, increasingly high-tech career is a great choice for those looking for a reward-ing, in-demand fi eld that offers a great deal of job security.

“There are always jobs,” agrees Bud Brueggeman, TCC’s automo-tive technology program head. “Even during the slowdown there were jobs for automotive techs. It’s one of those fi elds where if you are a skilled employee, you can get a job.”The Bureau of Labor Statistics projects a fi ve percent growth rate in automotive mechanic and tech openings through 2018, with a current median hourly pay rate of $16.88. Experienced mechan-ics with formal automotive training and top-notch diagnostic and computer skills can command more than $28.71 per hour.

At TCC’s new NATEF-certifi ed Regional Automotive Center in Chesapeake, students can earn an associate’s degree in automotive technology or certifi cation in several areas that prepare them for ASE exams, the industry standard.

Brueggeman is seeing a fairly diverse group entering the automo-tive program, from new high school grads to career switchers and former military personnel.

“Women do really well,” he says. “We have one graduate who is working for a Honda dealership and she’s never had a ‘comeback’ (where the vehicle needs additional work after the initial repair)

and that’s unheard of. We have more college-educated students than we’ve ever had, including people with graduate degrees. They may have been laid off or their job wasn’t what they thought it would be and they want to change careers.” While you’ll fi nd most mechanics working for dealerships and independent repair shops or starting their own business, they also attract employers in other industries, says Brueggeman. “For example, the wind turbine industry has more recently gone after our automotive tech students, so somebody fi gured out that these guys and gals have a lot of skills that are transferable and that’s some-thing the automotive industry is going to have to pay attention to.” In the meantime, auto techs can exercise those highly-valued skills in an always-interesting industry that embraces new technology and change.

The next time you step off an airplane after a safe fl ight, spare a quick thought for the small army of unseen aircraft and avionics equipment mechanics responsible for maintaining, repairing and inspecting the craft before it took off. The highly-trained techs check every inch of the planes they are responsible for with sophisticated

monitoring equipment, take apart engines, test every system and structure, keep detailed records, make needed repairs or replacements, then return the aircraft to the sky. “It’s a challenging career, but rewarding,” says Rondell Davis, corporate

admissions trainer for Centura College, which offers an aviation mechanics program through their Aviation Institution of Maintenance campuses. “On the campus I came from, one of our best students was a CNA, and

another of our top graduates worked in accounting. They wanted something different and I think our students come in, they see that that’s what we offer and they embrace that challenge.” FAA-certifi ed aviation mechanic schools offer programs that span

12- to 24 months. “Our program is 18-months,” says Davis, “and when students complete their schooling, they get a certifi cate that allows them to take their A&P licensing test.” Aviation mechanics should see a job growth increase of 7

percent through 2018 according to Bureau of Labor Statistics, and Davis says their graduates are experiencing no problems fi nding jobs. “This is defi nitely a good long-term career fi eld. Graduates are

going to work for the major airlines and for regional airlines. Many of our students go to work for government contractors.” Other aviation mechanics fi nd homes in fi elds like the aerospace

and automotive industries since their skill sets transfer easily to related fi elds, and some go to work for the FAA or move into supervisor positions. The median hourly pay is $24.71 and can go higher than $33/hr. for top earners. Benefi ts frequently include free air travel. “So you’re making good money doing a job you love and you get to

travel for free,” sums up Davis. “It’s hard to beat that.”

Almost every product we use travels by truck at some point - food, clothing, household products, equipment, even the cars on a dealership lot – which ex-

plains the nearly 3.2 million trucks on the road today. The sector is already one of the largest in the country, but by 2018, the Bureau of Labor Statistics

expects the number of jobs to jump by nine percent. That increased demand for more drivers just as many of the older pros reach retire-ment age means trucking careers are shifting into high gear. Here in Hampton Roads, the need is especially apparent. Not only does the region anchor the geographic center of the Eastern U.S., but it’s home to one of the world’s busiest ports where a tre-mendous number of products are transferred from ship to truck every day. To enter the industry, drivers must pass a Department of Transpor-tation physical and earn a commercial driver’s license (CDL). Several local career schools and community colleges offer specialized train-ing that prepares students to pass the test and successfully fi nd work. “Our truck driving classes are picking up and those guys are getting jobs,” reports Theresa Bryant, vice president for workforce development at Tidewater Community College. Pick-up and delivery drivers make local runs within their city or region and include specialty drivers like cement truck operators. These drivers are usually home each day and can expect to make a median wage of $13.27 an hour, with some drivers earning more than $24.15 per hour. Drivers who choose to go over-the-road, making long hauls, generally earn more money – their wages average $17.92 an hour and can go over $27.07 per hour – and their trucks are getting better equipped and more comfortable all the time. Aside from good pay and the security of knowing a driving career isn’t likely to be outsourced, trucking also appeals to those who prize their independence. Once drivers pull away from a loading dock, there’s no one looking over their shoulders and that can be very rewarding indeed.

When your A/C goes out in the middle of a heat spell or your heater begins to make whimpering sounds just as the barometer reaches brrrrrr, the HVAC tech who walks through your door can easily claim Most Important Person on the Planet status at that moment. Along with maintaining our homes and offi ces at comfortable temperatures, HVAC techs keep cavernous restaurant freezers humming along, ICU hospital units warm, refrigerated trailer-trucks on the road, climate-critical manufacturing rooms just-so, and touch every part of our business and personal lives in some way. Not surprisingly, these indispensable workers are seeing job growth increases projected at 28 percent through 2018 by the Bureau of Labor Statistics, which is much faster than average for the occupations they track. “The last research I did nationwide, the HVAC industry was roughly 50 percent undermanned,” says Dennis Brakeville, director of education and an HVAC expert at Tidewater Tech. Brakeville points to an aging workforce compounded by increased regulatory mandates to explain the growing need for HVAC techs. “Just as the average welder is reaching age 55, that holds true with the HVAC industry,” he explains. HVAC techs can choose from three specialty areas, he says – “Residential; light commercial, which involves working with things like restaurant equipment, walk-in coolers and freezers; and commercial, such as the big buildings downtown where they deal with the centrifugal chillers and direct digital controls. If you’re an HVAC technician, you’re a mechanical expert, you’re an electrical expert, you’re an air fl ow expert and you’re a chemist.” Most HVAC techs enter the fi eld after going through a six-month to two-year program offered by career and technical schools or community colleges. “Our program is 45 weeks,” says Brakeville, “and by the end of those 45 weeks, they have already taken their EPA certifi cation exam.” The median hourly wages of HVAC techs is $19.08, with top earners making more than $30.59 an hour. “Our very fi rst HVAC graduate several years ago went to work at the Hilton Hotel and he started at $27 an hour – I wanted to take his job,” laughs Brakeville.

In a region that’s a major shipbuilding and ship repair hub, it’s tradespeople who provide the skills that keep this industry going strong. Whether you are a certifi ed master or just beginning one of many local apprenticeship programs, you’ll fi nd excellent opportunities to build a career in a fi eld that is responsible for a fairly sizeable share of the area’s economic pie and an ongoing source of well-paying jobs. Shipbuilding leaders like Northrop Grumman Shipbuilding-Newport

News and BAE Systems employ thousands of trade specialists, from weld-ers, electricians and machinists to pipe fi tters, painters and carpenters. There are medium-sized and smaller shipyards clustered about the region as well, along with independent businesses that supply sub-contracting and vendor support – all dependent on skilled tradesmen. While many of the trades practiced at a shipyard are specifi c to ship-building (such as a shipfi tter), the majority of tradespeople would fi nd a warm welcome in any number of industries. So why choose a shipyard? Good pay, opportunities to advance and excellent training resources

are part of the attraction. For instance, Northrup Grumman Shipbuilding in Newport News is home to one of the best apprenticeship programs in the country and they also offer a wide variety of degree programs, leadership classes and training courses. They also make the latest technology available to their tradespeople. “A

large part of what we do as a company is stay ahead of the technology for all the crafts,” says George Decker, director of talent acquisition at Northrup Grumman. “We’re using sophisticated tools and processes. We build and overhaul the most complex pieces of machinery known to man – nuclear submarines and aircraft carriers.” Which leads to another reason tradespeople are drawn to the shipyards – pride in what they do. “You have a very strong sense of ownership of your job when you defi ne yourself as a shipbuilder,” explains Decker. “When you look at an aircraft carrier leaving here for deployment for the fi rst time, it is so dramatic. It’s easy to get caught up in the mystique of building these ships.”

There has never been a wider choice of training programs available for people who are interested in a skilled trades career, whether you are a recent high school graduate or an experienced professional who already holds a degree. Regional employers offer registered apprenticeships that give new hires the opportunity to earn a paycheck while they work toward their journeyman’s card. High school students can get a head start on a skilled trades career by taking classes developed through public school/community college partner-ships. The Virginia Community College System, along with career and technical schools, have developed an extensive list of accredited programs that lead to certifi cation, licensure or degrees in a large number of skilled trade areas. “Many of the programs at Tidewater Community College are short-term options in the form of certifi cates that plug into the longer term option of an associate’s degree, and in some cases they would even transfer into a baccalaureate degree,” says Daniel DeMarte, vice president for academic and student affairs at the college. “The opportunities that a student has start in high school. We’ve got a tech prep program, for example, where we try to build opportunities for students to get hands-on experience. We’ve got apprenticeship opportunities that are very structured and one thing that’s unique about TCC is that we award college credit for those. And we have people who, because of layoffs, just want a career change, so they’ll enroll in one of our oc-cupational programs. They can come in and fairly quickly get the skill sets they need for employment, then come back to us

to fi nish off a degree if they choose to at a later time. “So we have the full range – we’ll meet your needs wher-ever you are in that learning continuum, whether you’re com-ing right out of high school or whether you’ve got experience in the work world.” More choice means more ways to pursue a satisfying career that grows along with you, points out Theresa Bryant, TCC’s vice president for workforce development. “These programs are certainly a good option today and one of the things that I think is a little different now than it was years ago is the movement to developed career pathways. Individu-als don’t close doors by going into a trade. They can start with a certifi cate if they want to or go straight into an associate’s pro-gram, but there’s a real ladder for them to go in many different directions over the long term. Some will go on to a four-year degree and work in a management position, some will really like the work in their trade, but maybe advance to a supervisory or training role.” The Virginia Community College System’s online Wizard, at www.vawizard.org, lays out many of these options. “You can go through a series of career inventory questions that narrow down the kinds of occupations where you may have an interest,” describes DeMarte, “and maybe take that a step further and bring that down to a regional perspective by looking at the kinds of entry-level and longer-term jobs that are available, what they pay and how many opportunities there are.” In addition to exploring various trade jobs, students can also

use the Wizard to get an idea of what kind of training is neces-sary to work in those fi elds. “Students can look at the educational requirements, whatkinds of classes they need to take in high school, what classesthey need to take at the community colleges, and if the jobrequires a four-year degree, what classes to take to fi t thatpathway and how they link to the universities to make the rightconnection,” lists Bryant. Some employers will hire workers without training in aspecifi c trade. “We hire a signifi cant number of people,”says George Decker, director of talent acquisition at NorthropGrumman Shipbuilding-Newport News, “and while some haveconsiderable experience, we also do general employmentwhere we look at entry-level people who have the ability tolearn, maybe someone just out of high school or someonewho’s been working at a job that does not offer career opportu-nities and really wants to get a career going.” Along with one of the best apprenticeship programs in thecountry, Northrop Grumman’s Newport News shipyard offerson-site GED classes, along with an array of training courses, leadership classes and degree programs.“This company spends millions of dollars in training its work-force – there are a lot of opportunities to learn here. Our crafts-men spend their entire career working to enhance their skillsthrough on-the-job training and classroom training.” With so many ways into the fi eld, and so many ways to grow, training to become a skilled trades person can be a smartinvestment in a rewarding career that goes the distance.

While the construction industry claims the largest share of heavy equip-ment operators – think the iconic bulldozer – you’ll also fi nd a surprising array of specialty operators performing crucial functions in the mining, petro-leum, utilities, manufacturing, energy, military, logging, fi shing, agriculture, transportation, maritime and municipal sectors as well. On job sites, you’ll fi nd operators clearing, grading, excavating, load-ing and otherwise moving great quantities of earth, lifting heavy beams and laying pipes, spreading and packing asphalt, mixing and pouring concrete, digging wells, pumping sludge, drilling holes, driving piles, sifting, dredging, winching, separating, crushing and other assorted tasks. Closely related to heavy equipment operators are material moving occu-pations, such as industrial truck and tractor operators, tank car loading opera-tors, ship loading operators, gas compressor operators, dragline operators and tower operators. Heavy equipment operators commonly receive on-the-job training or attend formal operating engineer apprenticeships, though some vocational schools offer programs as well. Several states and cities require licenses for certain types of equipment – for instance, crane operators need special licenses in 17 states and six cities. And if the job involves handing toxic chemicals or other dangerous materials

Retiring workers are expected to boost job growth numbers and the Bu-reau of Labor Statistics projects a 12 percent growth rate for operators in the construction industry through 2018. Because of the breath of industries employing heavy equipment opera-tors, when one sector is fl at, workers can transfer to another, especially those with a wide variety of equip-ment experience. Some operators move into foremen or project man-ager slots. Wages vary depending on experi-ence and the type of equipment oper-ated, but the median hourly pay in the construction sector is $18.88, with the middle 50 percent earning be-tween $14.78 and $25.49, and some operators earning more than $33.34 an hour.

Skilled welders are in an enviable position. Not only do they command excellent wages, but they can also select from a large assortment of industries and employers throughout the country vying for their expertise. Life is good if you’re a welder. The Bureau of Labor Statistics points to a simple supply and demand expla-nation – employers are reporting they can’t fi nd enough welders with the skill level they require, which means job prospects should remain good for weld-ers who are willing to keep their skills updated.People who want to enter the fi eld can opt for on-the-job training; courses that last a few weeks; certifi cation or degree programs developed by career, technical and community colleges; or registered apprenticeships. Welders may fi nd themselves in a variety of environmental conditions, from manning a workbench on the fl oor of a plant to perching atop a high-rise to working underwater. About half of all welders work a 40-hour work week,

but overtime is common and the Bureau of Labor Statistics notes that one in fi ve welders

rack up 50 hours a week or more. Because many fi rms that employ welders run two or three shifts, it’s possible to work a schedule that accommodates personal and fam-ily needs. Top earners report hourly wages

of more than $24.38, while the middle 50 percent of weld-ers earn between $13.20 and $19.61 an hour. Pay is directly related to skill level,

another reason to keep training current. Some welders move into

supervisory or management posi-tions while others branch into operat-

ing or programming robotic or other welding machines. Most welders work in manufacturing-related businesses, and in our region, shipyards and their subcontractors are one of the largest sources of jobs. The median salary for welders who choose shipbuilding is $46,015. “We are very much looking at welders right now,” says George Decker, director of talent acquisition at Northrup Grumman Shipbuild-ing-Newport News. “We need a couple hun-dred this year. If someone is experienced or has training with a good work history, we’d be very interested in them.”
