was none of the Anakim left in the land of the people of Israel. Only in Gaza, in Gath, and in Ashdod did some remain.” The Anakim were descendants of Anak, and Numbers said the decedents of Anak came from the Nephilim. This passage states that the Anakim, ancestors of the Nephilim, only remained in Gaza, Gath, and Ashdod, which were all Philistine cities. 1 Samuel 17 says, specifically, that Goliath was from the city of Gath. The description that is given of his height and stature is very similar to the description of the Nephilim throughout the Bible. Furthermore, in 2 Samuel 21:15-22 several times the scriptures use the Hebrew word, Rafah to describe the Philistines; this is the singular of refa’im which is translated “giant.”

Maybe Goliath is a decedent of the Nephilim, or perhaps he’s just a tall man, whatever you might believe doesn’t take away from the lesson that is being taught. The battle between the Philistines and the Israelites was one-sided. The problem was that many Israelites were focused on the wrong side. They assumed as Goliath assumed, that there was no hope for an Israelite victory. The beauty of this story, the story of David and Goliath, was that David wasn’t focused on Goliath’s size. Honestly, Goliath could’ve been two times as large, and that wouldn’t have mattered one bit to the shepherd boy. The rest of the Israelites saw how small they looked next to Goliath, whereas David saw how small Goliath looked next to God. 1 Samuel 17:26, “Then David spoke to the men who stood by him, saying, “What shall be done for the man who kills this Philistine and takes away the reproach from Israel? For who is this uncircumcised Philistine, that he should defy the armies of the living God?”

The moral of the story is that no earthly enemy, physical pain, or mortal struggle is higher than our God. When we realize that He is on our side, then every Goliath we face will seem so small. David had confidence in God (1 Samuel 17:37). Isaiah 41:10, “Fear not, for I am with you; be not dismayed, for I am your God; I will strengthen you, I will help you, I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.” In the end, examine your life and remember that no matter what you face, focus on what’s bigger, focus on God, and nothing will overcome you. God Bless! David O.

From the Preacher’s Desk Focus on What’s Bigger!

1 Samuel 17:1-11 “Now the Philistines gathered their armies together to battle, and were gathered at Sochoh, which belongs to Judah; they encamped between Sochoh and Azekah, in Ephes Dammim. And Saul and the men of Israel were gathered together, and they encamped in the Valley of Elah and drew up in battle array against the Philistines. The Philistines stood on a mountain on one side, and Israel stood on a mountain on the other side, with a valley between them. And a champion went out from the camp of the Philistines, named Goliath, from Gath, whose height was six cubits and a span…”

It shouldn’t surprise many why the Israelites were so afraid of Goliath. The Bible describes his height as “six cubits and a span” which, depending on the culture, could be anywhere between 9-10 feet tall. Interestingly, 1 Samuel 17 does not call Goliath a giant, only a “champion”; however, there is internal Biblical evidence that infers that Goliath may have been a descendant of the Nephilim, those described in Genesis 6:4 as, “giants on the earth.” Numbers 13:33 says, “There we saw the Nephilim (the descendants of Anak came from the Nephilim), and we were like grasshoppers in our own sight, and so we were in their sight.” The Jewish Historian, Josephus, describes the Nephilim as men of “great strength” whose acts resembled those of the Grecian “giants” (Antiquities of the Jews, 3:1).

It should be noted that some translations, KJV and NKJV, don’t mention the Nephilim by name; however, there is a straightforward explanation for this fact. The translators rendered the name Nephilim as “giant” instead of keeping it, as is preferred, a personal noun. In more modern translations, (ASV, RSV, ESV, NASB, etc.) the name Nephilim is used. What does any of this have to do with Goliath?

As we’ve mentioned, Numbers 13:32-33 says the Nephilim were “people…of great height” but more importantly, “the sons of Anak.” The Bible says in Joshua 11:21-22, “And Joshua came at the time and cut off the Anakim from the hill country, from Hebron, from Debir, and Anab, and from all the hill country of Judah, and from all the hill country of Israel. Joshua devoted them to destruction with their cities. There
