Strategies for Finding the Text to a Document

    1.

Try clicking on the GetIt! icon, if provided.

    2. If it is a journal article, note the year, volume and issue number. Look up the name

of the journal (not the title of the article) in the catalogue. Locate a subscription that

covers the year that the article was published.

    a.

If the subscription is electronic, click to go to the subscription. Locate theback files or archive or other issues of the journal. Locate the year of

publication. Locate the volume, and then the issue required. Scan the table

of contents to find the article title. Locate the link to the PDF version of the

document (usually denoted by the Adobe PDF icon .

    b.

If the subscription is print, note the volume and issue numbers, as well as the

call number. Most print journals are kept on the first floor of the Library.

Locate the SER area of the high-density shelving. Locate the call number.

There will be a number of bound copies with the same call number but

different volume numbers and years. All issues are bound into one volume.

Select the appropriate one. Locate the article within the volume. Take it to

the Copy Shop and scan or copy the article.3.

If it is a conference paper, try the following collections, as appropriate:

    ACM Digital Library

    Aerospace Database (AIAA)

    ASCE Research Library

    IEEE Xplore

    SPIE Digital Library

    4. Consult the catalogue of the University of Ottawa to see if there is a subscription

(there is a link on the left navigation bar of our catalogue home page).

    a. For electronic subscriptions, go to the circulation desk at the University of

Ottawa and request a guest login.

    b.

Log into a workstation in the University of Ottawa Library.

    c.

Access the subscription and download the article to a USB key, or email it to

    yourself.

    5.

If you cannot find a copy, use the RACER tool to request it from another library.

    a.

Go to Library home page -> Services -> InterLibrary Loans

    b. Follow the instructions to obtain a login and password for RACER.

    c.

Log into RACER. Since you have the citation information

    (author/year/title/journal/volume/issue/page numbers) look for blank

request form on the left of the screen.

    d. Complete and submit the form. RACER information is here:
