    Existentialism for the Director

This is a hard job. There are endlessmeetings and phone calls and budgets, grant proposals, late nights and week-ends staging events, and many, manywide and varied demands from com-munity. It is sometimes difficult toremember why I took this job.So when I'm forced to stop and thinkabout it-as I am on the occasion ofthis address-this is my answer: Be-cause it matters. Chinese culture mat-ters. China looms before us, an awak-ening giant, yet the vast majority ofAmericans still equate "Chinese Cul-ture" with dragons, kung pao chicken, and lead in children's toys.Chinese culture is the story of EddieFung, who grew up here in Chinatownand wanted to be a cowboy, whoserved in World War 2 and was cap-tured by the Japanese in the battle ofJava. It is the story of the poet BeiDao, reared during the Cultural Revo-lution and exiled after the 1989Tiananmen Square protests. Chineseculture is modernization and hu-tonghouses, dreamy high-school studentscramming for exams, transvestites liv-ing in lonely dormitories. In other words, Chinese culture is vast, diverse, complex, and human. It is our job here at the Chinese CultureCenter to present Chinese culture be-yond the stereotype, beyond the drag-ons and kung pao chicken, and to do sohere, in the heart of San Francisco'sChinatown. This is why, in 2007, we presentedover 50 public events: Chinese CultureCenter Cinema (C4), film screenings ofindependent Chinese documentaries, exhibitions of emerging Chinese

American artists, panel discussionstween first-generation Chinese immigraand American-born Chinese.InJuly, we presented a reading and discsion with the poet Bei Dao, short-listedthe Nobel Prize in Literature. And invember, we presented Eddie Fung, whstory was written and published bynoted historian, Judy Yung. We partnewith Kearny Street Workshop, ChinNewcomers, Community Educational Svices, and many other community orgazations to present and celebrate Chinculture to new and diverse audiencAnd, of course, there is our flagship pgram, In Search of Roots, which briyoung Chinese Americans back totheir ancestral villages in China. In all these events, presentations, and pgrams, it is the job of the Chinese CultCenter to translate Chinese culture tomono-lingual American compatriots.Quite frankly, if this community doestake the lead in presenting Chinese culto America as it truly exists, no one wThere is no other community in the UnStates that can represent Chinese culturdiversity, in numbers, and in influenAnd if we do not do this work, to mAmericans, Chinese culture will remone-dimensional, exoticized, and ctained in a fortune cookie. This is why the Chinese Culture Cematters. The Chinese Culture Center will servecultural bridge between generations, cmunities, languages & dialects; to connpast and present, Chinese and nChinese. The sharing of Chinese culand the arts across generations and acpeoples is our reason for existence.transmission and experience of cultureliving legacy that will evolve over tand is a responsibility of each generatto the next, each people to another.Thank you for your investment in theture and the present of the Chinese CulCenter.Sabina ChenExecutive Director

Much recogni-tion has been given re-garding Mrs. Fu's teach-ing, and has actually at-tracted the attention oftwice as many studentsas the summer session. The class size doubled from four toeight, with a cap at ten students in orderto ensure that Mrs. Fu can give eachstudent his/her deserved attention. Oneof the students, Ms. Sandi Margin, saidthat she took the class because sheheard from other people that Mrs. Fu

knows what she is teaching and that theclass exceeds her expectations. Ms. Win-nie Lai, another student, had learnedbrush painting prior to taking the classand wanted to take this one to practiceand improve under the guidance of a sea-soned professional.
