Cross Cultural Connection 4 September 2014 Newsletter Dear Prayer Partners and Supporters, Oh Dear, it looks like I am starting some bad habits. This newsletter is late, as was the August one. Hopefully, October will be better. It is always difficult to decide what to share, what to include and what not to include. I could talk about many things, and I do like to talk! I thought this time I would take you all through a Sunday in the life of the Fairview Park Christian Church. This past Sunday was August 31, a fifth Sunday. On fifth Sundays we have a potluck lunch after church. Note: We eat lunch together EVERY Sunday as a regular practice. Fifth Sundays are different as many people bring food to share. Normal practice is that Vicky and Rosella (and some others) usually do the purchasing, preparing and cooking of the food for each Sunday. Those who eat at church regularly pay a certain amount a month to help with expenses. The whole church is divided up into helping teams for setting up chairs, tables, etc. before and doing dishes and take down afterwards. I said all that, but the fifth Sunday is not just for eating! We usually have a special emphasis for children. They all stay for the whole worship service (instead of going to their own Sunday School classes during the sermon time) and some times participate as there is opportunity. So back to the whole day activities: Scott and I usually arrive at the building around 8:45 am. Vicky and Rosella are usually already there getting food ready. Adult Sunday school starts at 9:30 am. Scott has been teaching this, concentrating on Hebrews and now into James. Church services start at 10:30. This Sunday, CS Ho, from the Mong Kong church, was the speaker. Scott usually gives the sermons. Several people take turns leading the songs. They give the list of songs one week in advance to Scott who makes up a power point program to put the words on the wall for everyone to see. Vicky was the leader Sunday. Olivia plays the piano for church and then practices a week ahead with the next song leader. Olivia and Dorothy take turns translating the message and the announcements. Several also help with serving communion. Evelyn and Jenny take turns teaching the younger Sunday school class (during the sermon time). The ages are 5 to nine! There are 7 or 8 girls on one boy. Janed, Dorothy and I take turns with the older class, ages 10 to 15. The older class is taught in English and the younger class in Cantonese. As soon as possible after worship closing, we eat lunch. Around 2 pm is a prayer meeting with Jenny and Dorothy leading. We have had around 20 people stay for that. Board meetings are on the first Sunday of each month, so the board meeting starts after the prayer meeting. Scott is the chairman, I am the secretary, Olivia handles the checkbook and Vicky also helps with collecting the offering each week. We do not take up an offering during the services, but anyone who gives, puts their offerings in a box that we have on the wall. I catch a ride home with Scott and Evelyn when everything is all said and done. Vicky and Rosella are the last ones to go home. They eat leftovers for supper, sweep the floor and wash up the dish towels (and I am not sure what else!). I usually get back to my apartment anywhere from 3 to 5pm. And of course, I am ready for a long nap. This Sunday I did not get that nap as Scott and his friend Gerry came over to move a desk up to the roof top office. Jim Mollette and Al Corson (as of today, Sept 3) are now here. I made up another bedroom (thus the desk had to go somewhere else) for Al to stay. I borrowed a cot (thanks to my friend, I saved a lot of $$ by borrowing the cot instead of buying a bed) for that bedroom. Hopefully Al will sleep well. Wow, it took a long time and a whole page to explain one Sunday. As you will realize, that is the “normal” for members of our church. For some it is a rather long day, others need to leave early as they have other activities for Sundays. You may have noticed that some of the people mentioned do a lot of things! For a small church such as ours, I feel that everyone is pitching in and helping as much as they can. Our theme for this year is Unity from Ephesians 4:36. Fairview Park Christian Church members are putting this into practice in many different ways. Please continue to pray for us in our unity and in our outreach to the Fairview Park community.
