AND KENMORE

by Kathy ReandeauThe title is a bit intimidating, isn’t it?

After all, it mentions prison and who really

wants to talk about that? It’s easier to

sweep it under the rug and pretend this

is somebody else’s concern. That works

unless you’re one of the four people in

America who is impacted by this issue,

including inmates, corrections officers,

victims and all of their families and

friends. Even if you’re not in one of these

groups, you are still affected simply by

living in New York.

Currently there are about 35,000 people

being held in 70 prisons across the state.

Tax dollars are spent supporting those

people and possibly their families during

the time of incarceration. When they’re

released, recidivism rates are high - 40%

of men return to prison in three years,

while 30% of the women do. Those who

don’t are expected to be able to assimilate

back into society and family life. There

are high divorce rates among both inmates

and officers. But perhaps those that suffer

most are the children. There are about

10,000 children of inmates in NYS. They

are 8-10 times more likely to follow in

their parents’ footsteps because there are

no role models, and nobody who fills the

void when a parent is away. This will

affect all of us down the road.

Instead of ignoring these statistics

what if we spent time thinking about

the questions of how to help people in

prison and after they’re released, what

can be done to support their families and

victims, can we make it any easier for the

corrections officers, and what can we do

to bring God into this equation?

That’s exactly what the 4th Restorative

Justice Ministry/Prison Ministry Conference

plans to do. This event gathers together

experts to provide an education of what

is going on in the field, describe positive

things that are happening, and highlight

dedicated people who will share their

insights on what we can do to help. This

is an opportunity to talk to professionals

with hundreds of years of experience, who

most would not otherwise have a chance

to meet. Display booths will provide

materials and information on different

ministries. Training will be available for

those who want to learn how to do more.

We are celebrating our First Year Anniversary this month!!!! Thanks to all those who support our efforts!!! I feel truly blessed that things continue and that we are expanding into other communities in WNY.

Everyone is invited to

attend, including those

who may be part of a

ministry or want to know

more about the ministries.

Anybody who is impacted

by a loved one being in

jail and is looking for

programs for children and

families should attend.

Or anybody who is just

interested in learning about

this issue and finding out

what can be done to help.

The $15 conference fee

includes the speaker and

workshop sessions, free

materials, a continental

breakfast, and a spaghetti

and meatball lunch.

Special music will be

provided by First Baptist’s

pastor, Kurt Coffed. First

Baptist member and Prison

Fellowship Volunteer,

Charlie Popavich, will serve

as MC.

Speaker topics include

Good News Jail & Prison

Ministry, The Correctional

Environment, The Prison

Worship Service, and

Testimony of God’s

Grace. Workshop topics

include Angel Tree Prison

Fellowship, Re-Entry

Coaching Ex-Offenders,

Residential Aftercare, Mercy

Heart Ministry and 1st

Principles Study.

The driving force behind

this conference is Prison

to Praise International.

This organization, which

has been in operation

since 1996, was founded

by David Umfreville

who continues to serve

as Director. I spoke to

Dave who reminded me

that, “Today’s inmates are

tomorrow’s neighbors.

We can all play a role in

how well that neighbor

relationship works out.”

Prison to Praise serves

as a ministerial support

organization. They

partner with Christian

churches, providing

volunteer Chaplain visits

to incarcerated members

and loved ones. They

also assist the efforts of

prison Chaplains with

discipleship and preparing

prisoners and their

families for reentry into

society connecting them

with a nurturing church

community. Other aspects

of the ministry include:

• Work with homes that

house parole-sponsored

ex-inmates - help them find

jobs, relearn social skills

and “take the prison out of

the man”

• Inmate and Family

Support through jail

visits, discipleship

correspondence, Bible

study, Christian counseling,

and prison fellowship.

• Resource Materials for

Chaplains and Inmates

• Consulting, Training,

and Support - Develop

and facilitate training,

conference coordination,

correctional facility

protocols, and more

If you’re interested

but can’t attend the

conference, visit the Prison

to Praise web site at www.

prisontopraise.org to

learn about how you can

help by being a volunteer,

collecting books, collecting

gifts for the Angel Tree,

becoming a conference

coordinator, joining the

Prayer Posse, or donating.

Dave stressed that they

need thousands of new

or gently used Christian

books and Bibles, study

Bibles, and large print

items. Especially helpful

are Christian commentaries,

devotionals, and Christian

bios. Donations should

contain no wire spirals

or metal, and no home

address or personal

information.

The conference is

sponsored by: Prison

Fellowship, Sundoulos,

COPE, Prison-To-Praise

International, Chaplain

Fellowship Ministries,

and Restorative Justice

Ministries Network of

North America. Further

information on First

Baptist Church of North

Tonawanda may be found

at www.fbcofnt.com.

by Kevin WalkerThe Reformers Unani-

mous Program at Light-house Baptist Church in North Tonawanda has been helping those in our community for over three years now. The Bible based program boasts an 80% recov-ery rate, if the program is followed through. While speaking with the Director, Joshua Freund-schuh, he stated that addictions of every kind, including alcohol, drugs, pornography, gambling and others are dealt with in a Biblical program. This approach uses Scripture to emphasize

the recovery process. In each group (men with men, ladies with ladies), everyone can openly discuss what issues, set-backs and accomplish-ments they have had that week without the details of the addiction and in a non-judgmental setting.

Reformers Unanimous class format is split up into three different seg-ments which are entitled Talk, Talk, Talk ! Each section is designed to develop a personal re-lationship with the Lord Jesus Christ.

Talk to God: Prayer and Testimonies

First, we talk to God in prayer and testimony. Each student is given an opportunity to share a need or request to be prayed for. We then have an encouraging testimony time where many students are able to share personal victo-ries they have experi-enced that week.

Talk to Each Other: Counsel Groups

Second, we talk to each other. Reformers Unanimous breaks into counsel groups to share each of our burdens or blessings. Each group is led by a counsel leader. If anyone needs

personal counsel, it is made available. Students go over their completed challenges during this time and encourage each other in their road to recovery.

God Talks to Us: Preaching

Third, God talks to us. He does that, Lord willing, during the message. Reformers Unanimous doesn’t just

listen to people talk about their problems. We teach what God says to do about it. We teach the Holy Bible.

The group meets every Friday at 7:00pm and on Sunday morn-ings at 10:00. The group

is open to everyone and there is no cost to attend meetings.

St. Paul Lutheran Church, 453 Old Falls Blvd., North Tonawanda will be holding its annual “Original Breakfast with the Bunny” for the community on Saturday, April 2 from 10 am to 12 noon.

All events of the day are held indoors including the breakfast, Easter Egg Hunt, games, crafts, and prize drawings.

Cost of the event is $2.00 per person; children younger than two years old are FREE.

A photo with the bunny costs $1.00The admission fee includes breakfast and

a visit with the bunny and a gift . Each child will also receive a bag for the Easter Egg Hunt, a coloring activity packet, four game tickets, prizes, a large craft project and a small project in addition to one entry per child for the door prize.

The breakfast menu includes cereal, hard-boiled eggs, French toast sticks, sausage, donut holes, fresh fruit, orange juice, coffee, and tea.

This year marks the thirteenth year that the church has sponsored the community event. In 1999 and 2000 it was known as “The Easter Extravaganza” with only the Easter Egg Hunt, games, and crafts. Starting in 2001, the breakfast was added.

“We usually have somewhere from 300 - 400 people who attend”, said Karen Sinon, who is again the chairperson for the event. “It is always a fun day for everyone. It’s great to be able to use all of our inside spaces for the event. Cold weather, rain, or snow never messes up the day. We look forward to seeing lots of kids and parents from the community again this year.”
