    Theotokos: Description & Definition

It simply tells us thatMary is the Mother

    of Jesus, and since

Jesus is God, or theIncarnate Son of

    God, then Mary can

    be considered the

    MOTHER OF GOD!

    Theotokos: Biblical Sources

    The bible tells us that

    during the VISITATION of

    Mary to her cousin

    Elizabeth, Mary is

    acclaimed by Elizabeth, at

    the prompting of the

Spirit and even beforethe birth of her son, as

    "the mother of my Lord".

    LUKE 1:41-43

    When Elizabeth heard Mary's greeting,

the infant leaped in her womb, and

Elizabeth, filled with the holy Spirit,

cried out in a loud voice and said, "Mostblessed are you among women, and

blessed is the fruit of your womb.

And how does this happen to me, that

the MOTHER OF MY LORD should come

    to me?

According to St. John Jesusis the Word made flesh, the

    Word Who assumed

human nature in the wombof Mary. As Mary was truly

the mother of Jesus, and as

    Jesus was truly God from

    the first moment of His

    conception, Mary is truly

    the mother of God.

    John 1:1-2, 14

    was God.

He was in the beginning with God.

And the Word became flesh and made

his dwelling among us, and we saw hisglory, the glory as of the Father's only

Son, full of grace and truth.

    NESTORIANISM

    Nestorianism teaches that in

    Christ there was an

    accidental union of a human

    person and a divine person.

    In this understanding, the

Word of God dwelt in Christ

as in a temple and that the

one who died on the cross

was Christ, not the Word of

    God.

    NESTORIANISM

    Consequently, Nestorius

    strongly criticized the use

    ofTheotokosto Mary in

    that she could only be

    called Christotokos. These

    heretical views were

    condemned in the Council

    of Ephesus in 431.

    Perpetual Virginity: description & definition

    From the first formulations

of her faith, the Church hasconfessed that Jesus was

    conceived solely by the

power of the Holy Spirit inthe womb of the Virgin

    Mary, affirming also the

    corporeal aspect of this

    event: Jesus was conceived

    "by the Holy Spirit without

Did Mary have brothers and sisters!?!

    Against this

    doctrine the

    objection issometimes

    raised that the

    Bible mentions

    brothers and

    sisters of Jesus.

Mark 3: 31-3531 His mother and his brothers arrived. Standing

outside they sent word to him and called him.32 A crowd seated around him told him, "Your

mother and your brothers and your sisters are

outside asking for you."33 But he said to them in reply, "Who are my

    mother and my brothers?"

34 And looking around at those seated in the circle

he said, "Here are my mother and my brothers.

35 For whoever does the will of God is my brother

    and sister and mother."

The truth is The Church has always

understood these passages asnot referring to other childrenof the Virgin Mary. In fact

James and Joseph, "brothersof Jesus", are the sons ofanother Mary, a disciple ofChrist, whom St. Matthew

significantly calls "the otherMary". They are closerelations of Jesus: i.e. cousins, relatives, or kinsmen, etc.

    CONCLUSION

In life we have to surrender completely to agracious and welcoming divine providence

because there is life after death. Mary, the saint of

all saints, teaches us that in doing whatever Jesus,

her son, tells us we can arrive at perfect union

with Christ. This is a heritage of a loving Mother

who only wants what is best for us. Her motherly

affection moves us to admire, contemplate andemulate her as we continue with our earthly

pilgrimage towards a personal and unutterably
