A YEAR IN REVIEW

Page 8: CCAS annual report 2013

As Chairman of the Central Coast Academy of Sport, it is once again very pleasing to report on another highly successful year for the organisation both on and off the sporting field.

Each year, I look forward to attending the Academy Awards Evening, where we have the unique opportunity of bringing all scholarship athletes, coaches, officials, administrators, family members, corporate partners and VIP guests together in the one room to showcase the Academy of Sport and pay tribute to the success of another year.

I congratulate each of the award winners across the sport programs and again acknowledge the outstanding achievements of

• Swimming athlete Lachlan Vane-Tempest as our 2013 Male Athlete of the Year.

• Netball athlete Lauren Moore as the 2013

Female Athlete of the Year.

• Future Stars Athlete (Boxing) Josh English recipient of the Chairman’s Award

• John and Sue Knight (Display Power), who received the prestigious Ray Sandell Award for Exceptional Service.

• Robert Stott (Athletics and Swimming) winner of the inaugural Board Of Directors Inspirational Athlete Award to recognise a gifted and talented athlete who is a true ambassador of the Academy of Sport.

At the 2013 Awards Evening in November, we announced that over 2279 athletes had benefited from Central Coast Academy of Sport programs since our launch in 200 – 2014 will surpass 2,500 through the CCAS programs. This is an extremely pleasing figure and one that each and every one of our corporate partners has

played an important role in.

Once again I was amazed by the level of professionalism of our young athletes, which was on display through their acceptance speeches and the way in which they conducted themselves as representatives of the Central Coast Academy of Sport. It is so pleasing to see that the core values and culture that we have developed at Board level is being promoted and delivered all the way through our organisation.

We are very fortunate to have a committed and dynamic team of staff and volunteers, who take strategic ideas and initiatives and turn them into future success stories for our organisation. Your support and efforts is sincerely appreciated by the Board.

I personally thank Ian Robilliard, Mike Rabbitt OAM, Carolyn Kay, Steve McWhirter and Nikki Garrett for their wise council, good humour and genuine concern for the athletes of the Central Coast of New South Wales. To Ian

your ongoing management and strategic direction of the Academy is appreciated and respected.

2014 will see further growth for the Central Coast Academy of Sport, which is likely to feature the introduction of exciting new sport programs and the further enhancement of existing programs to ensure they continue to offer the best possible opportunities for those involved.

Our focus of on-field skill development will continue, whilst we’ll also be further enhancing the already strong off-field personal development

and education programs we offer to athletes, coaches, officials and administrators.

We will remain true to our brand and we will continue to focus on not only creating better athletes and sportspeople, but overall better young people and citizens within our community. We are very well aware that our successes to date and our planned successes for the future are only possible through the highly valued support and contribution of our corporate partners.

With this in mind, we will remain committed to ensuring

each and every corporate partner is serviced to the highest possible standard and we will continue to work with these like-minded organisations to deliver unique benefits and rights of association with the Central Coast Academy of Sport.

To all, I extend my upmost gratitude for your support throughout 2013 and I look forward to your continued involvement with the Central Coast Academy of Sport.

It is with pleasure that I provide a report of the programs and operations of the Central Coast Academy of Sport (CCAS) for the year ending 2013.

The Central Coast Academy of Sport has enjoyed another successful year in 2013, significant milestones were reached and many of the program that were operated were done so with significant benefit to the many athletes who participated.

The Central Coast Academy of Sport had twelve sports programs in operation, this provided access to

330 athletes across these programs. The point of difference that is immediately noticeable is the content and quality of the coaching that the athlete receives. The fact that a committed and highly qualified coaching staff supports each program remains a foundation stone of the organisation. In all approx. fifty (50) volunteers provide a generous provision of their time to support the endeavours of the athlete and the organisation.

In 2013 O’Connor Marsden and Associates (OCM) were commissioned by Communities NSW to undertake an

independent review of all Regional Academies of Sport. The review was received in early May (2014) and the results specific to the Central Coast Academy of Sport were most pleasing.

The review focused on the operational robustness of the business, assessments were undertaken in governance, sports programs, financial management, commercial acquisition and operation, strategy and planning and how the network of Regional Academies was working. The review was obviously comprehensive and from a CCAS Board’s perspective somewhat overdue!

Administration2013 was the first year of a revised four-year strategic development plan for the period 2013-2017. This document has identified a number of key result areas to be achieved by December 2017; The CCAS will continue to build a strong market presence within the region and interact the priorities of the regional development plan. This one KPI clearly demonstrates the willingness of the CCAS to work in a collaborative way to build mutual benefits for the sports industry in the region.

In 2013 Communities NSW through the Office of Sport and Recreation engaged O’Connor Marsden and Associates (OCM) to assess the workings of the network of Regional Academies, the assessment was to consider and report on how effectiveness of the operations of each individual

Academy. The CCAS is one (1) of eleven (11) Academies in NSW that was assessed in 2013. The OCM report was recently received and the Board of the CCAS was delighted with the depth of the review and the performance of the Central Coast. Mark Holton the Chairman of the CCAS was delighted to have been a part of this independent review and felt the review was overdue. It is anticipated the individual CCAS report will be well received as the business continues to ‘track’ very well against the strategic plans established by the Board and management continues to effectively deliver operational outcomes sought by the Board in a quiet yet efficient manner.

Staffing resources again took on a new look in the second half of 2013. An Athlete Services and Events Manager (appointed August 2013) assisted the Programs Manager in the delivery of CCAS sports programs. Mr Ray Sandell OAM and Mrs Jan Mayfield continued to provide significant volunteer support to the business.

Finance and AssetsThe 2013 Financial figures are again pleasing; in a year when finances remained tight the CCAS is able to report growth in most areas of key financial measures.

A modest (Loss) from ordinary Activities of $6,280.00 is not unexpected as significant expense management has occurred over the past year, this combined with a tight commercial market has seen the Academy strive for a

profit neutral position with the dampening income acquisition trend; the result shows a net equity position that remains strong ($260,185.00). The Not-For-Profit sector is ‘under siege’ in terms of income generation, income remains extremely tight in a market not overly conducive to spending. Sponsorship spending in 2013 was on a downturn and the knock on effect into regional markets made commercial acquisition difficult.

The net assets or total equity of the Academy is $260,185.00. The ability to generate $685,759.00 in total income is a pleasing achievement. This income generation result is ‘on par’ with 2012 and is attributable to a concentrated acquisition and retention program.

One of the greatest challenges in the Not For Profit sector is the ability to diversify income streams; in 2013 the CCAS was again able to do this with a relatively high degree of success.

The on-going financial stability of the Academy is again best described as strong, this is due to the very important support received within the commercial / corporate sector of the Central Coast, including the ongoing recurrent funding provided by the NSW Government. It is hoped that the success of the OCM report will flag to Government that the CCAS is an underfunded organisation in terms of the delivery of services provided.

While grants money has remained stable over ten (10)

years it should be recognised that the Academy really does a lot with very little, the challenge ahead is to continue to grow the income for the business as the management of expense lines remains extremely trim.

Companies such as: The Greater Building Society, The University of Newcastle Ourimbah Campus, Mingara Recreation Club, Communities NSW, Gosford City Council, Wyong Shire Council, NBN Television, Central Coast Radio, Webstiff.biz, Srixon, ClubsNSW have all made important contributions to support the CCAS. To these organisation and the many more who have supported the programs and events over a busy 2013 I offer a very important vote of thanks.

IT and SystemsIn 2013 the CCAS IT system has been pulled apart and re-built, the organisation now has a dedicated in office cloud server which makes the migration of electronic files much more effective. The ability to keep files ‘synced’, backed up, and up to date has been an ongoing management matter, this was resolved in 2013.

Commercial OperationsIt is pleasing to report that in 2013 many long term corporate partnership were executed which is essential in terms of risk management for the business. While the market remains difficult the results obtained by the Academy in 2013 were very pleasing.

CCAS Annual Report 2013 I Managing Director’s Report 9

Page 12: CCAS annual report 2013

Commercial Operations cont. The annual Outlook report published by Sponsorium found that while sports sponsorship accounted for over a third of the industry market, other sectors – particularly arts and festive sponsorship are gaining ground, while spending across all sectors has plateaued. In 2013, 38% of sponsorship deals were in sports, down from 41% in 2012, this tightening of the sports sponsorship market has made commercial acquisition quite time consuming and at times difficult.

The CCAS is pleased to report the following partnerships were agreed and executed in 2013; The University of Newcastle (5 year MoU), Mingara Recreation Club (3 year MoU), NBN TV (3 year MoU), Southern Cross Austereo (3 year MoU), Gosford City Council (4 year MoU), Wyong Shire Council (4 year MoU), Srixon Sports Australasia (3 year MoU), The Greater Building Society (1 year MoU signed April 2014), ClubsNSW (1 year MoU), Central Coast Grammar School (3 year MoU), in addition to these partnership agreements numerous supply arrangements that build the athletes ‘rights of association’ came into effect during 2013.

Many supply arrangements are made available to add to the value of being an Academy athlete (and to parents and guardians) and the benefits available through the provision of important supply; merchandise such as 2XU, hydration through Water to Go and Gatorade,

Medical supplies through Victor Sports, insurance through Insurance AdvisorNet, trophies through Accolades and More, Gymnasium access through Mingara One, Medical support through Hills Street Sports Medicine, Chavez Chiropractic, Thrive Physiotherapy are but some of the supply agreements executed in 2013 that build further value into the organisation. It makes very sound business sense that if any athlete, family member or stakeholder that is involved in any way with the Academy of Sport should be utilizing the services, products and programs of the committed group of corporate partners of the CCAS. By utilizing the support structures of the CCAS the benefits are measurable and sponsorship and commercial arrangements will remain in place for many years to come. I regularly speak about the concept of working collaboratively, through ‘mutuality’ I have no doubt we will help each other succeed in this tight commercial market.

The CCAS has a very robust investment model and one that has served the organisation exceptionally well since inception back in 2004 and I am delighted to say that while challenges are evident we approach 2014 with a high degree of anticipation in terms of building organizational capacity through a well structured commercial program.

ConclusionThe business position the CCAS enjoys is a direct result of both the contribution by the Board of Directors and a

committed and professional management team. I would again like to convey my thanks to Mark Holton (Chair), Mike Rabbitt OAM, Steve McWhirter, Carolyn Kay, and Nikki Garrett for their involvement, dedication and professionalism in delivering the outcomes sought through the Academies strategic planning.

To the staff of Sammy Armstrong, Emily Burgess-Moore, Ray Sandell OAM, Jan Mayfield, Linda Holton and Christine Robilliard I again offermy sincere thanks for the work you have all undertaken to help the business in such a positive light.

A YEAR IN REVIEW

Page 16: CCAS annual report 2013

The Board of Directors have agreed on a number of ambitious plans for the year ahead, some of these are detailed in the organisations future plans.

Administration

The OCM report used a dashboard indicator (green, amber, red) to assess areas specific to governance, financial management, compliance, operational performance and elements specific to an organizational health assessment. The OCM report specifically considered fifteen (15) dashboard indicators with the CCAS receiving fourteen (14) green, and one (1) amber assessment.

The OCM report has validated the structural model implement by the Central Coast Academy of Sport; the model has served the business very well since inception in 2004. Identified improvements will be enacted following Board approval.

The administration of the CCAS is highly refined, systems serve the business well and a focus on events will be made in 2014. Events and specific holiday programs will require additional administrative support. The ‘off shoot’ is the ability to raise additional income through these type of programs.

The Board will expand the Director skill set by the appointment in 2014 of one additional Director. The portfolio that requires assistance is commercial acquisition and it will be in

this pillar of operation that the Board targets a suitable person to assist in this specific business area.

Finance and Assets

CCAS has consolidated the business equity at $260,185.00, while this appears to be a very strong position it is one that must continue to grow.

The fact that Government support has remained ‘capped’ for eight years is an ongoing indicator that a focus must remain on sponsorship acquisition and retention and expense line management. It simply means operating every program and event in line with the established budgets. In short a ‘user pays’ system must remain incorporated in the subsidized sports model currently on offer and the sponsorship success enjoyed by the CCAS to be remain a priority in 2014 and beyond.

The average athlete registration across all programs is $280.00, this is for a six (6) to eight (8) month program. This price represents extraordinary value and the rights through association mean the CCAS has one of the most robust investment sports model available.

The Australian Sports Foundation charitable gift program will be extended in 2014 for a further five-year term. Monies raised via ASF are essential in building the investment portfolio of the organisation.

Sports Management

A number of Sport Programs will not operate in 2014 and a number will be expanded; the reason is basically resource deployment. Resource deployment is a term to describe the workings of the SSO, basically the need for the CCAS to operate the sport with support from the SSO is important in building an ‘endorsed athlete pathway’. SSO’s must take an active interest in both the workings of the CCAS and in the workings of the regional program and by doing this the sport will remain an important element of the CCAS core business.

An endorsed pathway is best demonstrated by a number of sports that place a high value on regional delivery, Netball NSW, AFL (NSW/ACT), Jack Newton Junior Golf, Swimming NSW, Surfing NSW, Triathlon NSW, Country Rugby League, Australian Rugby Union (NSO) and Cycling NSW are examples of Sporting Organisations that can demonstrate their keen interest in the workings of the CCAS; in business this is called ‘mutuality’ and it is important in terms of the sports offered in 2014 at the CCAS.

IT and Systems

The migration of files to the CCAS Office Server that is linked to cloud technology will be on going in Q1 and Q2 of 2014. CCAS will be moving away from Box Hosting to an ‘in house’ system designed to ensure duplication of files is fully eradicated.

FUTURE DEVELOPMENTS

14 Future Developments I CCAS Annual Report 2013

Page 17: CCAS annual report 2013

Marketing and Promotion

As the CCAS celebrates ten (10) years of operation in 2014 this will form the basis of a number of marketing and promotional campaigns. A new TVC will be launched in April 2014 featuring a number of high performing athletes who have progressed through the CCAS sports programs, this will be complimented by a digital media campaign through the Facebook and Twitter networks to ensure a greater and targeted reach.

Commercial Operations

The commercial success of the CCAS remains the cornerstone of the organisation; it is essential to continue to build the financial capacity of the business through the execution of multiple year agreements. The CCAS made significant progress in this area in 2013 and 2014 commercial acquisition (and retention) will remain a focus of the business.

The CCAS has tendered for the hosting of the ClubsNSW

Academy Games for the period 2015-2017.

Within the tender a revised acquisition model has been enacted to ensure any sponsorship raised via the CCAS will have an acquisition fee attached.

While this was debated significantly during the tender process the CCAS has the ability and capacity to raise significant funds from the hosting of the games.

2013 CCAS AFL Program Squad - Orientation Session

Together with AFL NSW/ACT, 2013 saw the CCAS reestablish a junior development program which included on field and off field components with a high emphasis on individual skill development.

The program was lead by former Essendon Star, Mark McVeigh and included other very experienced coaching staff, providing expert guidance on skill technique, fitness and game sense training.

The CCAS AFL program provides selected athletes a comprehensive introduction to what would be required at the elite level of the sport and

may lead these players into the Central Coast Sydney Swans Academy Program.

Through this process, the CCAS is increasing opportunities for local players to progress and play at an elite level within the AFL.

The 2013 Program commenced with an orientation and program overview on the 30th October at Mingara Recreation Club where the sixteen (16) selected athletes received their uniform and playing kit.

In addition to regular scheduled training sessions, the squad received an insight

into what it takes to become a professional athlete, training methods to correct technique, sports science testing from the University of Newcastle and various education sessions including sports dietetics and a presentation from the Greater Building Society on Financial Fitness.

The partnership between the CCAS and AFL NSW/ACT is one built on similar core values and beliefs, which will no doubt ensure a long and lasting relationship between the two organisations for the long term benefit of young AFL players in the region.

CCAS 2013 Athletics Program Squad

The Central Coast Academy of Sport Athletics program is structured to develop junior athletes on a pathway that will guide their advancement into elite performance and success at a higher level, and also to mentor our higher-level elite athletes.

The 2013 Athletics Program Squad was made up of seventeen (17) scholarship athletes forming the development and associate athlete programs.

Starting in May, the athletes met on a regular basis for a program which included scheduled track and field training as well as skill and personal development sessions that covered areas such as Decision Making, Looking after

you Feet, Plyometrics training and specialist coaching with Lindsay Watson (Australian Team Manager for the 2012 Olympic Games) who also presented to both the athletes, coaches and parents on Team Qualifying.

Athletes partook in a hands on sports psychology session with John Crampton with an emphasis on focus, and a beach based exercise physiology session with James Cummins. CCAS athletes were exposed to state of the art testing methods and facilities by The University of Newcastle’s Exercise and Sports Science Department.

Evidence of the need for the CCAS to provide an elite track and field program is highlighted

with recent achievements including Chris Dodd jumping a Commonwealth Games B qualifier with a 2:20m jump at the Sydney Club Championships, Alex Herford receiving a gold medal in the Triple Jump at the NSW Country Championships and Bethany Krandendonk receiving gold in the 13 years girls Triple Jump at the 2013 NSW All School Track and Field Championships among the CCAS athletes many other PB’s and medals during the course of the program.

The Central Coast Academy of Sport Program is grateful for the generous sport of program partners, Mingara Recreation Club, Mingara One Fitness & Aquatics Centre, 2XU and Gatorade.

With the generous support of new program sponsor ClubsNSW, the CCAS 2013/14 Basketball Program commenced November 2013.

With a strong coaching group in place under Head Coach Drew Fenton, an increased number of athlete’s were selected into this years program to meet with its growing popularity.

The program has again been able to attract a number of guest coaches, who bring a wealth a knowledge and skills to the athletes, with improvements already shown across the board.

Specialist coaches this year have included renowned names as Tim Hudson (Assistant Coach, Sydney Kings), Tim Mallon (Head Coach Hunter Sports High School), Damien Cotter (Head Coach NSW Institute of Sport Basketball Program), Rex Nottage (Head Coach Newington College) and John

Hargreaves (U16’s Country Coach).

The CCAS aims to deliver skills, information and instruction on top of what the athletes receive from their home association or school program.

To compliment the on court training sessions, a host of education components were held to assist with the athlete’s personal development including Stretching & Injury Management with Thrive

Physio, Finance with the Greater Building Society and Social Media usage with Aware Education.

Video analysis, Noah Shooting Clinics and basketball specific sports science testing conducted by the University of Newcastle round out the program.

The always popular squad tour saw this year’s team travel to Wollongong. A number of trial matches completed the three day intensive training camp with strong games against the Illawarra, Hornsby Spiders and a touring New Zealand squad.

Following these games, an invitation was extended to the CCAS to compete in New Zealand. This offer is currently under consideration for the 2014/15 program.

The success of the program could not be achieved without the support of our program partners ClubsNSW, Central Coast Adventist School, Thrive Physio, And1 and Hudsons Global Logistics.

The SRIXON 2013/14 CCAS Golf Program achieved some fantastic results through the increased use of technology and regularly scheduled competition.

The camped based program operating in partnership with Jack Newton Junior Golf (JNJG) supports pre-elite golfers with a golf curriculum and skill modules program to improve the athletes prospects of progressing through the development pathway.

Access and exposure to elite testing protocols was

offered to the squad through a session with world leading Bio Mechanist, Rob Neale providing in depth analysis of golf swing using 3D motion technology, a Launch Monitor session with Khan Pullen (JNJG) and concluding the program with a visit to the Australian College of Elite Golf providing CCAS golf athletes a skills session in an exclusive training environment normally limited to elite athletes involved in State or National High Performance Programs.

Other initiatives included a squad tour to the Australian

Open, nutrition, social media and sports psychology education sessions and the introduction of four SRIXON challenges and inter-academy match play through out the program to encourage competition and to prepare athletes for the upcoming ClubsNSW Academy Games.

Many thanks to Program Sponsors: SRIXON, Jack Newton Junior Golf, Shelly Beach Golf Club, Kooindah Waters, Magenta Shores, Bateau Bay Driving Range and Sporte Leisure.

NETBALL / NETBALL UMPIRESThe Central Coast Academy of Sport followed the Dare to Develop a Diamond Academy syllabus, as set out by Netball Australia in conjunction with Netball NSW.

The program is aimed primarily at individual skill development with a focus on preparing scholarship athletes for NSW state team selection trials and the further representative opportunities that lay ahead.

Fortnightly training and holistic education sessions are held at the Central Coast Grammar School in two blocks prior to the ClubsNSW Academy Games and following the Hunter Festival of Sport.

2013 saw great success for the squad with a number of athletes selected into various representative teams; with special mention to Lauren Moore, Leanne Grevenitz and Kristen Kessler selected into the 2014 NSW 17/U Team and Olivia Duffy into the 2014 NSW 17/U Development Squad. Following Age Nationals, Lauren and Kristen were named in the Australian U17 Squad!

As always, a highlight of the program for the squad is a visit from their Swifts Idols. This year, the squad were treated to a full court defence session by Susan Pratley; Susan’s professional and friendly manner made for a highly intense and very enjoyable training and education session.

Athletes received valuable court time and exposure to the next level of competition via the ClubsNSW Academy Games, NIB Games and Inter-Acadmey Games. Although a young squad, the girls always exceeded expectations and met their individual and team goals.

In addition to athletes, the CCAS focuses on the development and further education of local coaches and umpires.

Following this pathway, Amber Cross was named as the 17/U NSW State Team Assistant Coach and Kate Rennie from the Netball Umpires Program was awarded her National B Badge.

The CCAS thank Netball NSW for their ongoing support and guidance and program sponsors The Central Coast Grammar School, Hills Street Sports Medicine Centre and Gatorade.

RUGBY UNION

The Central Coast Academy of Sport proudly supports the Australian Rugby Union Junior Gold Cup Program.

The ARU Junior Gold Cup program is a strategic development program for up and coming rugby union stars, guaranteeing high-level competition all around Australia for U15 and U17 age levels.

There are 24 Junior Gold Cup centres across Australia all with an U15’s and U17’s squad that compete in the Junior Gold Cup Tournament.

The competition provides an opportunity to all the players, coaches, administrators and match officials to experience competition at a national level, whilst still representing their region.

This year’s tournament saw the Central Coast squad travel to Dubbo to compete against Western NSW, play Victoria and Western Sydney at the squad’s home ground - the Central Coast Grammar School and verse the Illawarra Squad in Wollongong.

The intense competition against the best players in their age group highlighted the growth of the players technical skills and abilities over the course of the program.

Dedication and commitment was expected from the squad with twice weekly training sessions held at the Central Coast Grammar School.

Congratulations to the selected squad, we wish them well in their progression through the player pathway.

Notes to the Financial Statements

For the year ended 31 December 2013

Note 1: Statement of Significant Accounting Policies

The financial report is a general purpose financial report that has been prepared in accordance with Accounting Standards and other authoritative pronouncements of the Australian Accounting Standards Board and the Corporations Act 2001.

The financial report covers Central Coast Academy of Sport Limited as an individual entity. Central Coast Academy of Sport Limited is a company limited by guarantee, incorporated and domiciled in Australia.

Page 57: CCAS annual report 2013

CCAS Annual Report 2013 I Notes to Financial Statements 55

Central Coast Academy of Sport LimitedABN 64 104 918 596

The financial report has been prepared on an accruals basis and is based on historical costs and does not take into account changing money values or, except where stated, current valuations of non-current assets. Cost is based on the fair values of the consideration given in exchange for assets.

The following is a summary of the material accounting policies adopted by the economic entity in the preparation of the financial report. The accounting policies have been consistently applied, unless otherwise stated.

Income tax

The company is treated as a sporting body under Section 50-45 item 9.1 of the Income Tax Assessment Act 1997, and therefore it is exempt from income tax on all income it derives.

Inventories

Inventories are measured at the lower of cost and net realisable value. Costs are assigned on a first-in first-out basis.

The cost of manufactured products includes direct materials, direct labour and an appropriate portion of variable and fixed overheads. Overheads are applied on the basis of normal operating capacity. Costs are assigned on the basis of weighted average costs.

The cost of mining stocks includes direct material, direct labour, transportation costs and variable and fixed overhead costs relating to mining activities.

Property, Plant and Equipment

Each class of property, plant and equipment is carried at cost or fair value less, where applicable, any accumulated depreciation.

a) PropertyFreehold land and buildings are measured on the fair value basis, being the amount for which an asset could be exchanged between knowledgeable willing parties in an arm’s length transaction. It is a policy of Central Coast Academy of Sport Limited to have an independent valuation every three years, with annual appraisals being made by the directors.

The revaluation of freehold land and buildings has not taken account of the potential capital gains tax on assets acquired after the introduction of capital gains tax.

b) Plant and equipmentThe carrying amount of plant and equipment is reviewed annually to ensure it is not in excess of the recoverable amount from those assets. The recoverable amount is assessed on the basis of the expected net cash flows that will be received from the assets employment and subsequent disposal. The expected net cash flows have not been discounted to present values in determining the recoverable amounts.

The cost of fixed assets constructed within Central Coast Academy of Sport Limited includes the cost of materials, direct labour, borrowing costs and an appropriate proportion of fixed and variable overheads.

Page 58: CCAS annual report 2013

56 Notes to the Financial Statements I CCAS Annual Report 2013

Central Coast Academy of Sport LimitedABN 64 104 918 596

c) DepreciationThe depreciable amount of all fixed assets including buildings and capitalised leased assets, but excluding freehold land, is depreciated on a straight line basis over their useful lives to Central Coast Academy of Sport Limited commencing from the time the asset is held ready for use. Properties held for investment purposes are not subject to a depreciation charge. Leasehold improvements are depreciated over the shorter of either the unexpired period of the lease or the estimated useful lives of the improvements.

The depreciation rates used for each class of depreciable asset are: Class of Asset Depreciation Rate % Plant 30%

Leases

Leases of fixed assets, where substantially all the risks and benefits incidental to the ownership of the asset, but not legal ownership, are transferred to Central Coast Academy of Sport Limited are classified as finance leases. Finance leases are capitalised recording an asset and a liability equal to the present value of the minimum lease payments, including any guaranteed residual value.

Leased assets are depreciated on a straight line basis over their estimated useful lives where it is likely that ownership of the asset will be obtained or over the term of the lease. Lease payments are allocated between the reduction of the lease liability and the lease interest expense for the period.

Lease payments under operating leases, where substantially all the risks and benefits remain with the lessor, are charged as expenses in the periods in which they are incurred.

Lease incentives under operating leases are recognised as a liability. Lease payments received reduce the liability.

InvestmentsShares in listed companies held as current assets are valued at those shares’ market value at each balance date. The gains or losses, whether realised or unrealised, are included in profit from ordinary activities before income tax.

Non-current investments are measured on the cost basis. The carrying amount of non-current investments is reviewed annually to ensure it is not in excess of the recoverable amount of these investments. The recoverable amount is assessed from the quoted market value for listed investments or the underlying net assets for other non-listed investments.

The expected net cash flows from investments have not been discounted to their present value in determining the recoverable amounts.

Intangibles

a) GoodwillGoodwill is initially recorded at the amount by which the purchase price for a business exceeds the fair value attributed to its net assets at the date of acquisition. Purchased goodwill is amortised on a straight-line basis over the period of 20 years. The balance is reviewed annually and any balance representing future benefits for which the realisation is considered to be no longer probable is written off.b) Patents and TrademarksPatents and Trademarks are valued in the accounts at cost of acquisition and are amortised over the period in which their benefits are expected to be realised.

Page 59: CCAS annual report 2013

Employee entitlements

Provision is made for the liability for employee entitlements arising from services rendered by employees to balance date. Employee entitlements expected to be settled within one year together with entitlements arising from wages and salaries, annual leave and sick leave which will be settled after one year, have been measured at their nominal amount. Other employee entitlements payable later than one year have been measured at the present value of the estimated future cash out flows to be made for those entitlements.

Contributions are made by Central Coast Academy of Sport Limited to an employee superannuation fund and are charged as expenses when incurred.

Central Coast Academy of Sport Limited does not record, as an asset or a liability, the difference between the employer established defined benefit superannuation plan’s accrued benefits and the net market value of the plans assets.

Central Coast Academy of Sport Limited operates an ownership-based remuneration scheme, details of which are provided in the Notes to Accounts. Profits or losses incurred by employees, being the difference between the market value and the par value of the shares acquired, are not recorded as remuneration paid to employees.

Cash

For the purpose of the statement of cash flows, cash includes cash on hand and in all call deposits with banks or financial institutions, investments in money market instruments maturing within less than two months, net of bank overdrafts.

Comparative Figures

Where required by Accounting Standards comparative figures have been adjusted to conform with changes in presentation for the current financial year.

Revenue

Goods & Service Tax (GST)

Revenues, expenses and assets are recognised net of the amount of GST, except where the amount of GST incurred is not recoverable from the Australian Taxation Office. In these circumstances, the GST is recognised as part of the cost of acquisition of the asset or as part of an item of the expense. Receivables and payables in the balance sheet are shown inclusive of GST. Cash flows are presented in the cash flow statement on a gross basis, except for the GST component of investing and financing activities, which are disclosed as operating cash flows.
