MISSION STATEMENT:

The Clark County Artists Guild is a non-profit organization that supports the visual arts through exhibition and

educational classes. Workshops are offered by our teachers to inspire, create and educate seniors, adults and

children within the community.

CLARK COUNTY ARTISTS GUILD UPDATE:

The Liability License that the CCAG carries is only valid for “CCAG Sponsored Shows” and is not valid

for other shows you may participate in.

BADGES

New CCAG badges are available for $10.00. Order a badge at the General Meeting or contact:

Mary Aldinger 658-6998 to order your badge. The CCAG Board has contracted with a new company to produce a

new silver metallic badge with a new modern look, or you may choose from 3 color combinations…Black with

Silver Print, Silver with Black Print, or Black with Gold Print at no additional price.

The April Challenge theme will be “Spring”.

Bring in your new artwork to participate in the challenge theme and for everyone to enjoy.

Message From The Board Some of you may be aware that Lisl Harper’s mother has recently passed away. Our thoughts and prayers are with her, and her family. This means that the rest of the board will be filling in during her absence. As always the board members are here to help our members and promote all forms of art, and artists. If you have any questions or requests please email myself or one of the board members.

That leads me to an important event that's rapidly approaching, the 2014 Board Member Elections. This Board Member Election will be held in June, and there will be more specific details forthcoming.

I encourage members to help by serving on the board. The Clark County Artist Guild Board is what makes this

organization work. In the past finding new board members has been a struggle, and even now we are having

difficulties covering all the various duties required. So I ask our members to please consider volunteering for the CCAG

Board. I've only been on the board for a short time, and I can tell you that I enjoy it! Sometimes it can be difficult,

and I wish I had more time to devote, but overall it's a wonderful experience.

The Board of Directors meets once a month to discuss all of the CCAG Guild business, upcoming meetings, events, and field trips, forms, legal issues etc. This process is both fun and a constant learning experience. Here are just a few benefits of being a board member.

1. An optional benefit that is offered to board members after one year of service on the board is: one year

free membership or free participation at 6 Whole foods shows. Some board members choose to exercise one of

these options, and some do not.

2. Since board meetings are often held around midday or after 6.00 pm, refreshments and snacks are usually

provided to board members.

3. At board meetings you will be able to share your opinions and suggestions to the rest of the board to

improve the functionality of the guild and ways to benefit the members.

4. Beyond these, serving on the board of directors insurers that the guild will continue to have fresh ideas,

and be a wonderful organization for years to come. The few hours a month that you donate will have a lasting

impact on our organization.

5. You will be able to keep informed and assist with making the decisions that will grow, and operate the Clark County Artists Guild.

So again I ask that everyone please consider volunteering, and keep your eyes open for the forthcoming information about this election.

Jamie Schab gave a very informative and interesting presentation on the art of Batik. Here is a brief summary of her presentation in case you missed it! Batik, pronounced Ba-Teek, is a textile craft using hot wax as a resist and fabric dye (similar to what is done to an egg at Easter). This type of art is used on paintings, fabric designs, clothing, house wares and home furnishings. This craft has been used for over thousands of years. Batik consists up of several layers of work, starting with the cloth and using a tool called “Tjanting”, pronounced "Chanting", that looks similar to a pipe with a slender spout for the hot wax to flow out. The Tjanting tool has a very small tip for the hot wax to flow through for the design. Once the wax (usually resin or bees wax) is applied for the pattern, the fabric is put through a cold dye bath to add the color. In Indonesia, blue, red, brown, yellow are the common colors used. The fabric is then dried (using the sun is preferred). Then the waxing and dying is applied in several stages using this method. For countries such as Indonesia where Batik is common, they have large vats to use for the dye baths. After all layers are complete, the wax is removed by using a boiling hot bath to remove the wax. This must be done very carefully as the water and fabric is very hot. In Indonesia, the wax is skimmed from the vat and re-used many times. In countries such as China and Indonesia or even the Egyptians, they have used Batik to tell a story with their patterns. This was a time for the women to group together to tell their stories with cultured symbols or colors. Small dots or a drawing from age old ancestral designs have been used. In modern day, stamped patterns have emerged. This seems to be an easier process, but actually must be done very precisely.

Jamie showed a video of the artisans at work in Indonesia and a video of the paint on process she utilizes. Samples were passed around to show and feel the fabric, tools, wax & artwork. At the end she showed a large batik panel she is working on.

Anna Hammer

Anna Hammer is an award-winning artist who specializes in works of portraiture and realism.

She is a member of the Colored Pencil Society of America, a commissioned portrait artist and an art instructor.

Her work was featured in numerous issues of Colored Pencil Magazine, Sunshine Artist Magazine and MilkX

Magazine. Recently her drawings have been included in "Hidden Treasures" book by Ann Kullberg and "Small

Works 2014" by Jack Richeson.

In her demonstration, Anna will share her knowledge of colored pencils and reveal the secrets to this lively

medium through her step-by-step portrait drawing and layering techniques.

My name is Lucille C. Valentino. I joined the CCAG on Oct 9th, 2013. I have lived in Las Vegas for 13 years.

Previously I lived in Northern Virginia for 40 years. I am married to my husband Henry Valentino for 51 years. We

have four children. While raising our children, I was able to take painting classes which gave me time to paint at

least one day a week. I also taught art in my children’s school as a volunteer.

As an artist, color, form and style have been a focus all my life. The mediums for expression are water color and oil

imposed on different formats such as canvas, silk, wood, metal and paper. I have also been a fashion designer

with three stores in Washington, DC. Many of my paintings have been inspired by my experiences traveling

around the world. My art work reflects a life time of enjoyment from painting. During the time that I was

managing my three stores and designing gowns, I did not have time to paint. I am very happy to be able to focus

on painting now.

Ode to My Wife

The Tole Painter

She learned to paint on “Monday”

Her strokes were going fine.

She forgot to thaw out dinner,

So we went out to dine…

She painted daisies Tuesday,

She says they are a must.

They really were quite lovely,

But she forgot to dust…

On Wednesday it was strawberries.

She says the blending’s fun.

What hi-lites!! What shadows!!!

But the laundry wasn’t done…

Her apples were on Thursday,

So juicy, bright, and red.

I guess she really was engrossed,

She never made the bed…

It was violets on Friday,

In colors she adores.

It never bothered her at all

The crumbs on all the floors…

I found a maid on Saturday.

My week is now complete.

My wife can tole the hours away.

The house will still be neat.

Well it’s already Sunday,

But don’t call me a Saint.

Tribal Treasures: Regional Baskets and Their Collectors February 7 - June 30, 2014 Clark County Museum, 1830 S. Boulder Highway, Henderson, NV 89002-8502 (702) 455-7955

A collection of more than 100 baskets hand made by Southern Paiute Indians and other regional Native American tribes will be on display at the Clark County Museum from Saturday, Feb. 8, through June 30. There will be a preview opening from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 7, featuring gallery talks by Museum Curator of Exhibits Dawna Jolliff.

The collection, entitled “Tribal Treasures: Regional Basketry and their Collectors,” will be featured in the Heritage Gallery of the museum’s indoor exhibit gallery.

The baskets were created in Southern Nevada by Las Vegas Paiute, Moapa Paiute, Chemehuevi, and Panamint Shoshone Indians between 1880 and 1930. Some baskets have been on display in the museum over the years individually or in groupings, but Tribal Treasures marks the first time the museum’s entire collection has been shown as part of one exhibit.
