GRAVESTONE INSCRIPTIONS FROM CEMETERY AT BROWN-BACK'S CHURCH, CHESTER COUNTY, PENNA.Introduction by DR. ALBERTH. GERBERICH,Washington, D. C.

The gravestone records that follow wererecorded about fifty years ago at Brown-back's Church in northern Chester Coun-ty, Pa., by Dr. Gaius M. Brumbaugh.'They apparently represent the oldest in-scriptions he could find, plus a number ofothers that interested him because of thei:connection with him own family.

In his "Genealogy of the BrumbachFamilies" (New York, 1913) he has quitea bit to say about this old church, whichwas the first Reformed Church in ChesterCo., Pa. Gerhard Brumbach (1662-1757)donated to the congregation in 1741, theplot of ground on which the first structurewas built. On 19 May 1743, a "discipline"was signed by 34 leading members of thecongregation, including Gerhard Brum-bach himself, and at the same time a call

was issued to the well-known" pioneerclergyman, Rev. Jacob Lischy (died inYork Co., Pa., 1781) to become their firstpastor. It is doubtful that he accepted,as he was serving charges at Mode Creekand Kissels Churches in Lancaster Co.,and at Hill Church in Dauphin County, from 1743 to 1745. The first pastor seemsto have been Rev. Leonard Snell.

The "discipline" provided for setting upa consistory composed of four Elders andthe Minister, who passed on the names ofall applicants to receive the Lord's Supperat the stated times, this consistory havingpower "not only to keep from the Lord'stable all sinners who give offense to thecongregation, but also to cast them out ofthe church until they show amendment oflife". The four elders were: Philip Breit-enstein, Henry Steger, John Schiinholzand Nicholas Kerper.

The old church is thus described by an

eye-witness who saw it as late as 1793:"It was a structure of hewn logs one anda half stories high, with gallery andbroken roof. Two four-light win d 0 wswere made at each gable-end, and two ofthe same size in each side of the roof tolight the pulpit and gallery. The lowerstory had t w e Ive light windows. Thegraveyard, then small, was fenced closeto the church by pales, and in part, withposts and rails. This old building stoodwhere Daniel Benner's family-vault nowis, until the year 1800; it was then re-placed by a stone structure," erected out-

side the graveyard on the site of the pres-ent building.

Dr. Brumbaugh spoke of the elevatedposition of the cemetery and the fine viewsof the surrounding country that it com-mands. The oldest graves' are markedwith un d ate d sandstones. The oldeststone he found was that of Christian Ben-ner, who died in 1767. This man was animmigrant of 1710 who is ancestor ofmost of the Benners in the United States.A large gray granite stone weighing 7tons contains the names of Gerhard Brum-bach and 165 of his descendants.
