RESERVE YOUR SPACE! DEADLINE FOR THE BLONDE CONNECTION ISFEBRUARY 1ST, 2015

President’s MessageTo open my report I would like to say that I am privileged to be writing you this message as your new president of the CBDA. I am quite passionate about Blonde cattle and I look forward to helping build a stronger association and having the opportunity to meet and talk to breeders from all across Canada.

Additionally, I would also like to welcome Nicholas Boyd and Bill Van Bakel to the board as first time members. They are replacing Murphy Baker and Ron MacArthur who have provided many years of service and have chosen to retire from the board. As a token of appreciation Murphy and Ron will both be presented with belt buckles on behalf of the CBDA.

Out here in the northern parts of Alberta it definitely looks like winter is finally here to stay. The days are short and the nights are cold but in a few short weeks we will be headed back to summer and if you don’t like all of the snow just think of it as my dad would say, “that’s next spring’s grass”. I know that sounds like a pretty positive outlook on things right now while it’s minus 30 outside and we are shovelling snow every day, but things are really good in the cattle industry right now and we do have a lot to be smiling about. Record prices on everything with four hooves and a moo have really turned things around for cattle producers and as a result we are starting to see some really positive results on the purebred side of things for the Blondes. Personally we have gotten more calls for bulls in the last couple years than ever before and the results from the Cream of the Crop sale were very strong indicating that there are people out there willing to pay premium prices for high quality Blonde genetics.

As for board business, in the past few months there have been several items of concern brought forth with respect to services provided by Quantum Genetix. With their takeover of the Genserve lab they experienced some ‘transitional pains’ that are hopefully now taken care of. I fully recognized these issues affect you personally as members so as a board we will be discussing outstanding issues at ournext board meeting in early December. Other main topics of discussion include a 2015 printing of the Blonde Connection, host location of the 2015 National and AGM and the use of SNP vs. microsatellite DNA analysis for parentage and genetic trait analysis for the Blonde breed.

The following are a few reminders for our membership. The fee moratorium for animals over the age of one year will be expiring as of December 31, 2014 and it will not be renewed for 2015. However, given that the CLRC will be closed from Christmas day until the New Year that only gives you a few days between the publication of this message and Christmas to get your last minute registration applications in. On the performance testing front I want to encourage all of our members to take advantage of another excellent opportunity. For a limited time all you have to do to get your animals into the BIO system is send your information in to Reed Rigney and it will be entered into the system for FREE! That means that EPDs will be available for any animals entered into the system and yes, you read it right the first time, it is FREE! Please do not underestimate the value of performance recording and this opportunity.

In closing, I want to wish everyone a festive holiday season and from my family to yours I sincerely wish you a very Merry Christmas and countless blessings in the New Year.

Dusty Acre’s welcome the West Wind cattle

Crystal Blade First I would like to thank Myrna and Shirley at West Wind Blondes for giving us the opportunity to purchase their quality females. I would also like to thank Paul Fee at Fee Haven Farms for the wonderful care he provided for Blade until we got him home and taking the time to take him to more shows.

All the best in the new year to all our breeds and buyers. Shellie Wolfe and Dave Rounds 2507828565 Email [email protected] Web www.dustyacreblondes.com

MORATORIUMOn 2014 Registration Fee

Prior to the AGM in October 2013, several members approached directors of the CBDA Board with the idea of a registration fee moratorium. Following discussion of the merits and drawbacks, a majority of the membership in attendance at the AGM thought we should proceed with the idea. As this change is not by-law related, it was referred back to the Board of Directors. At our Board meeting in November, a motion to place a moratorium on registration fees was passed.

Here are the particulars: • Fullblood and Purebred registrations will be priced at

$25 regardless of animal age.• Percentage registrations will be priced at $15 regardless

of animal age.• All by-laws pertaining to registrations are in effect.• To be eligible you must be a member in good standing

with the Canadian Blonde Association in 2014.• Applications must be sent in 2014 (ie: post-marked or

time stamped).

One word of caution. Please ensure that you understand the by-laws for registration before you begin the process of registering older animals; specifically the DNA requirements. All Fullbloods will need to be DNA verified to sire and dam, and all Purebreds must have their sires DNA on file. Make sure that you have the proper DNA trail in place.

This is a great chance to catch up on the reg¬istrations for older animals, and we certainly hope that you all take advantage of this opportunity as it will not be continued in 2015. If you have any further questions please don’t hesitate to contact Reed Rigney, or any other member of the Board.

WE WISH YOU A

MOO YEAR!

MOORRY CHRISTMAS

As always I would like to start by thanking those that have been sending in Birth Weight and Calving Ease information via the new CLRC form. This information is valuable to the breed as a whole and will improve our EPD database. However, we have decided to change the method by which we collect this information. There are several reasons for the change, but the end result will save the Association money (fewer charges from BIO & CLRC) while providing better information for the performance program. We also know cost to participate in the BIO program is a fac-tor, and this change will move us towards a lower cost alter-native for our membership who would like EPD’s generated on their cattle. Here are the details: • The CBDA will purchase a BIO membership which will

allow us to enter information for all Blonde breeders ($350/year plus $1 for each cow that has a calf entered).

• or the 2014 calf crop BW, CE, WW & YW will be collected and Ontered into the performance program to generate EPD’s at no cost to the individual breeders.

• The CBDA will provide EPD and Index reports for participating breeders.

• Once we have a better handle on the time and costs associated with this initiative, small fees may be charged in the future.

• Any charges will be significantly lower than paying for the full BIO pro-gram as an individual breeder.

• If individual breeders would like full access to all BIO services they can still have their own account and enter their own information.

Change to Blonde Performance ProgramSo what is the process? Effective immediately, I ask that you not tofill out your complete calf information on the Information & Registration Worksheet received from CLRC unless you are registering the calf in question, or intend to at a later date. Instead I ask those of you that wish to have your Birth Weight and Calving Ease information entered into the performance program to contact me directly and will send you a new form to fill out. These can be

sent and received by mail, email or fax (I need to be notified for the latter). If you already keep computer records I will also accept

computer files as long as they contain all the appropriate in-formation. I know most of our Breeders collect this basic in-formation, and I would really appreciate everyone making the effort to send it in to me. With this change we are also in a position to enter Wean-

ing Weight information for the 2014 calving season. Those that send us BW & CE information will receive a second

sheet on which they can record weaning weight information this fall if they desire. Entering Weaning Weights will ensure that

your sires appear in the 2015 Sire Summary, as this is a requirement for their inclusion. Additionally, if you submit WW then you are in a position to submit YW in the spring of 2015. Again, as I keep saying, Blondes are a performance breed and we need to start effectively measuring performance if we wish to retain and expand our market share. If you have any questions please do not hesitate to contact me, and I look forward to entering your data.Reed Rigney - CBDA Performance Committee ChairPhone: (780) 348-5308 or Email: [email protected]

Crystal April 29A- Grand Champion Female

Little Creek Aladdin 11A - Grand Champion Bull

The Alberta AGM was held on Saturday November 15th at the home of Reed & Michelle Rigney. Shirley Jackson and Reed Rigney were returned to the Board and all executive positions remained the same; Reed Rigney - President, Ross Musgrove - Vice President and Dave Kamelchuk - Treasurer. The main topic ofdiscussion was promotions, and the positive feedback we have had by getting the cattle out in front of people at some new venues. Little Creek Blondes & Willow Springs Stock Farm exhibited eight head of Blonde cattle at Farmfair International in Edmonton (November). The cattle received favourable comments by those watching and coming through the barns.

The Blondes placed at, or near the top in several classes, and Little Creek Farms had the Reserve Junior Champion Female.

Congratulations to Dave Kamelchuk on being named our National Blonde President. He had a very successful National weekend in Ontario, with his cattle selling well in the sale and culminating by winning the National Champion Bull title for 2014. Shellie Wolfe of Dusty Acre Blondes had the Reserve National Champion Bull with a calf she had purchased in the Cream of the Crop sale just the day before from Crystal Farms. Plans are in the works for Alberta to host the National again in 2016. The Alberta Blonde bull test is underway for 2014/15. There are eight bulls on test from Double L Farms, KAM Blondes, Little Creek Farms, Spruce Vale Blondes, Willow Springs Stock Farm and Upper Cache Blondes. The bulls are being fed at Willow Springs Stock Farm (Rigney) again this year. Official start weights will be taken November 30th and the test will conclude around April 1st. Watch for weight updates on the Alberta and Canadian Blondewebsites.

ALBERTA / BRITISH COLUMBIA

TThis year we have three bulls on test at Douglas MB, two from Forty Acres and one from Bellevue Blondes. The starting weights and first weigh in is now posted on line for all to see. The sires of two will be officially on bythe next weigh in.

Man/ Sask has welcomed a new member and my sincere wish is that more would latch on to the idea that the Blondes are the leanest, biggest rib eye producers in the cattle industry. This really shows up in any test station where there is a mixture of breeds of cattle.

This has been a year of extremes, much rain and good crops until the harvest, then Sept drizzled all month. This has pushed the grade of grain

down to feed so it is better for the cattle people but not so good for the grain farmers. Hay was thick and lush, if you could get it off betweenrains. Travelling around, you could see many bales in the fields either stacked or ready for pickup as singles. After a warmer than usual summer, the winter moved in with a vengeance. Early start and too much snow already in most places BUT having seen what happened in the Eastern USA, I am OK with my country.

Cattle prices are more than anyone has ever seen in memory. For that we can be grateful we hung in there and got the BSE scenario over with and persisted in promoting the best cattle ever. A new season with all its ups & downs starts again in a month. Tis grand to be a farmer!

Have a very Blessed Christmas, a Happy New Year and a wonderful calvingseason.

Ontario Blondes are still in overdrive! The association as a group was far more active this year, particularly on the show circuit, which saw increased entries at all fairs, and the Points Show awards being revived. Congratulations to winners Fee Haven Farms (Fee Haven Ambush) and Over The Top Cattle Co. (OTOP Anywhere Anytime) on winning their respective divisions. We hope to see even greater numbers in the coming year and hopefully some more of our youth on the show stick. Blondes were in demand from Dawson Creek BC, to Belleisle Creek NB and all points in between as Ontario hosted a very successful National AGM, Show and Sale Sept 19-21 in Lindsay Ontario! A big thankyou to all who attended, participated, sponsored, or helped out in any way to promote our breed. An enthusiastic crowd and cell phone order bids from across Canada resulted in a very successful sale of 40+ lots with 3 animals commanding $5000 or more and many others in the $3000-$4000+ range - a very encouraging future for blondes. Blondes were also a big hit at the International Plowing Match (Ivy, Ontario). Thanks to Paul & Emily Fee and Rick Drinkill who unfortunately had to miss the National AGM & Sale to cover the IPM Blonde booth. Both parties were represented with order bids at the sale and participated in the National show on Sunday. Jeremy & Rachel DeWeerd (Stonewall Farms) were fantastic hosts of our Annual Picnic which also seen attending members pay a visit to John & Illse Vink’sHalcyon Farms. There are a lot of nice cattle being produced between these farms, be sure to check them out in the coming year.

We hope that all members are able to attend the 2015 AGM which will be held in February or March, with date, time and location yet to be determined. Please check the website and your email for important updates. Everyone’s voice is important, the more we hear from, the better we can serve you.

Three Ontario Bull Test Stations are up and running with Blondes participating in each station (approx 10-12 calves). Results can be found at www.biotrack.ca , and thank you to our consignors for making sure Blondes are represented.

The Ontario Board of Directors wishes you and yours a VERY Merry Christmas and a prosperous calving season for a Happy New Year!
