On Saturday, June 2, Colegio Bolivar graduated its 52nd class. With this

year’s class, the number of Colegio Bolivar alumni exceeds 2,300. As usual, we graduated a group of students with eclectic talents and interests.

Catalina Franky Tobón was awarded the eighth María del Pilar Pérez Scholarship. The award, commemorating

Colegio Bolivar 1974 alumnus María del Pilar Pérez, is a one-time cash payment of $2,000 U.S. upon enrolment in an accredited university.

The school began awarding this special scholarship in 2005 to a graduating senior, based upon merit and financial need. Recipients must be in the top 25% of the class, demonstrate financial need and submit a short essay of what it means to them to be a Colegio Bolivar alumnus. María del Pilar Pérez was the driving force behind the establishment of the Alumni Association. Her selfless efforts led to the formalization of today’s Alumni Association. Sadly, María del Pilar ("Palá") died tragically before her own two children graduated from her beloved Colegio Bolivar. In commemoration, the school established the scholarship. Former recipients of the prestigious award are a testimony to the high quality of students who are awarded this scholarship.

Sylvia Patiño ’73. Esta fotó-grafa y editora caleña fue una de las ganadoras del Latino In-ternational Book Awards. Ganó la categoría de diseño por mejor uso de fotografías con su libro ‘Santa Cruz de Mom-pox: cantos populares de mi tierra’. Este año Sylvia también hizo noticia con la traducción completa al inglés de la famosa novela ‘María’ de Isaacs. “Yo no entiendo por qué a nadie se le había ocurrido hacer una traduc-ción de ‘María’ al inglés, si ya lo habían hecho al japonés y a no sé cuántos otros idiomas”.

1980

Leila Cobo ’80, periodis-ta, pianista, presentadora y novelista. Leila es la directo-ra ejecutiva de Contenido y Programación Latino y organi-za la Conferencia Billboard de la Música Latina, considerada como la más prestigiosa de la industria del entretenimiento en el mundo. En una entrevis-ta que le hicieron recientemente para El País, Leila expresa que

“el Colegio Bolívar me marcó pues había un programa de música y un coro muy bueno, para el que yo tocaba el piano. A mí me gustaba cantar y estaba convencida de que lo hacía divino, pero era horrible. Creo que el Colegio tuvo influencia enorme en mi formación musical”. Leila ha publicado dos libros: en el 2009 Tell Me Something True (‘Dime algo verdadero’) y en febrero de 2012 The Second Time We Met (‘La segunda vez que nos conocimos’).

Martha Olga Jensen ’88, politóloga, diplomática y ‘an-chorwoman’. Tras su exitoso paso por la Embajada de Colombia en Estados Unidos, Martha Jensen, más conocida como ‘Muni’ es la Directora de relaciones públicas del canal NTN24. Cargo en el que tiene la responsabilidad de coordinar las oficinas en Nueva York y Washington, al posicionamiento de la marca y a la distribución del canal en Estados Unidos.

Esteban Piedrahita ’90, asesor de Planeación Estratégica de la Alcaldía de Cali. “Me devuelvo a Cali porque aquí está la opor-tunidad aún mayor, de subirnos a esa locomotora colombiana que está disparada, y porque es el momento de retribuir a Cali lo que me ha dado, ojalá sea un experimento feliz para mí y para la ciudad”.

Fanny Lu ’92, es una de las jue-ces de ‘Pequeños Gigantes 2’, reality mexicano que se trans-mite los domingos por el Canal de las Estrellas. Fanny Lu ha sido nominada a los Grammy Latino, los Billboard Latin Music Awards y los MTV.

1994

Andy Baiz ’94, conquista la ta-quilla con su última producción

‘La cara oculta’. Productor y di-rector de cine de la Universidad de Nueva York, empezó sus pi-nos como director en el Colegio Bolívar. Él les pedía a sus profe-sores que le dejaran hacer los trabajos en video. Tom Rompf, profesor de inglés, le siguió el juego y así fue como realizó la adaptación cinematográfica de

‘La rebelión de los girasoles’.

María del Pilar Agudelo ’97, Chef. Fundadora de la heladería artesanal Calathea, ubicada en el barrio el Peñón. Luego de estudiar pastelería en Nueva York y trabajar por varios años en restaurantes en Manhattan y Barcelona, donde su principal responsabilidad era ela-borar los helados, decidió montar su propio negocio en Cali.

Martha Juanita Nieto ’00, RTW Licensing Brand Manager at Roberto Cavalli. Former Merchandiser Manager for Valentino, lifestyle blogger, fashion consultant and a world traveler. For Martha, “Fashion is inspiration and creativity, but it also involves organization, strategy and management. These sets of elements seem very different and contrasting but they have to work together so a business can be successful. I worked as a Merchandiser who is responsible for making these two elements work together in a cohesive way. The Merchandiser has the difficult job of managing creativity and business without hindering either. Vagn Knudsen ’00 has now joined the ranks of German venture capital fund "Rocket Internet" as Manager of linio.com. Armed with a busi-ness degree from Babson College and a dual Master's degree from HEC Paris and MIT, Vagn wants to make linio the #1 E-commerce website in Colombia. According to Vagn, this is just one example of the ways CB alumni make a difference. The leadership needed to take on large entrepreneurial projects is not easily taught in the classroom. It comes from belonging to a Community of creative, open- minded individuals who can challenge the status-quo. E-commerce is at an early stage in Colombia, and is yet to be proven as a successful business model, but this can be perceived as a great opportunity by those who dare.

The conference simulates the debates and discussions that take place at the United Nations. Daniela studies Global Economics and Management Jacobs University in Bremen.

2012 Alumni Homecoming CelebrationCongratulations to the Classes of 62, 67, 72, 77, 82, 87, 92, 97, 02 and 2007!!CB Alumni ‘Quinquenio’ Classes gathered to celebrate their special anniversaries on June 9th!

The first class to arrive was the class of 1992, who celebrated their 20th graduation anniversary. More than 20 members showed up on time for a commemorative ceremony to tribute four classmates who passed away:

Ariel Felton, Gabriel Piedrahita, Adriana Villegas and Craig Klindt. With the ‘Orquesta Sinfonica de Siloe’ playing beautiful melodies, four weeping willows were planted by everyone in the

‘Bosquecito’, beside the science building. During the ceremony, classmates and family shared funny and fond memories of each person. More than a ceremony, it was a time to celebrate life, their lives.

The class of 1982 was not far behind; they were on time to enjoy a tour around the school with the guidance of the

Student Ambassadors (11th graders). They also arranged a special gathering in the ‘Propal’ were they showed a video and did an update of their lives. Most of the ‘quinquenio’ classes were present, the class of 1982, 87, 92, 93, 97, 02 & 07, were sitting on their designated tables by 8 o’clock.

The class that standout was the class of 1982, with more than 40 people! WOW! Dr. Nagy gave a warm welcome to everyone and after that, a video was played showing the schools expansion over the years and pictures of the classes who were celebrating their anniversary. The party began at 9:00p.m. with DJ Danny Soto and later the group ‘Punto Aparte’ joined the stage and entertained everybody until two o’clock in the morning.

Special Thanks…To Alfonso Reina FF‘01, Cristina Jaramillo, Eduardo De Angulo ’71, Nhora Arteaga and Rocio Giraldo for their great support during the event as the welcoming committee and ticket sale; to the maintenance team for their hard work putting everything together; to the Student Ambassadors who helped

with the tours that evening; to the school administration for their continuous support of this event; to the Class Captains, who throughout every year play a very important roll helping us gather their classmates.

Class CaptainsThere has been a growing interest towards participating as a Class Captain and getting involved in school activities. We find the Class Captain’s role extremely important in order to strengthen class group bonds, update data base and increase attendance to the Alumni Homecoming.

What is a Class Captain?A Class Captain is a representative of a class group. This person is the primary link between the Class and Colegio Bolívar. The class captain's involvement is needed to make sure that the things that matter the most to each class group are taken in consideration and for encouraging as many classmates as possible to attend the Homecoming. The captain's commitment is contagious to classmates, generating the excitement to "come home to remember" and invest in Colegio Bolívar’s future!

What does a Class Captain do? The role as a Class Captain includes:•Inviting classmates back to CB for Homecoming by writing

an invitation letter, e-mail, and/or making phone calls prior to Homecoming;

•Attending the Homecoming;•Gathering classmates for own special purpose at

Homecoming (a special time is set aside for class gatherings);•Encouraging classmates; for example, to take this opportunity

to support Colegio Bolívar through a reunion giving program (this could include choosing a class gift designation);•Assisting the Alumni Office in locating addresses of fellow

classmates;

•Keeping in touch with the alumni office so we can help make the job a successful one!

A class captain does not need to work on its own! Why not invite 2 or 3 of your classmates to lend a hand?

What help is available to the Class Captain? The Alumni Office will help in every possible way to make each class reunion a success! We will prepare and e-mail messages to classmates, put the Class Captain in touch with other class captains who can give some ideas, and be available to answer questions.

Why consider serving as a Class Captain?It is not a difficult or time consuming task and it is a lot of fun to touch base with former classmates. Our office will assist you in every way. I was also able to contribute to the school archives - the many happy memories of my early school days and how fundamentally important they were to me. It was a good foundation to my later years in education to which I am extremely grateful.”

On April 21, 2012, the actor and alumnus Juan Pablo Gamboa, Class of 1984 came back to school. RCN shoot a special video about his life. We did a short tour around the school stopping on Juan Pablo's special sections: Primary Classroom, Swall Auditorium (where the magic of acting began) and the High School Block (he even remembered his old locker)!

Laura Posada, Class of 2001, was the special guest of Mrs. Pastas class of Journalism. Laura is a journalist and has a column in El País. The eleventh and twelfth grade students were able to ask her questions about her career and experience in the field. She also motivated and invited students to write an article that she would later share in June’s column. Excerpts from Laura’s column:

Un negocio negroMis primeros artículos se gestaron en Tribuna, el periódico del Colegio Bolívar, un espacio que despertó mi interés por el periodismo y permitió entre los estudiantes afianzar un criterio autónomo y desenvuelto, único en esa época entre los colegios de Cali. Esta publicación, que completó 17 años y hoy es una moderna y nutrida revista, conserva la multiplicidad de opiniones que nacen del interés y del compromiso de los jóvenes de hacer parte activa de la sociedad, con temas de actualidad, de los que ninguno es ajeno. La siguiente columna fue escrita por una estudiante de Grado 11⁰, cuyo nombre prefiero no decir, y quizás una de las posibles promesas de este apasionante oficio. Les comparto.

“Aunque no lo crea, es muy fácil entrar a discotecas sin haber cumplido 18 años. El hecho de ser adolescente no es ningún obstáculo para rumbear, pues el uso de contraseñas falsas es la

‘solución’ a la prohibición de la entrada de menores de edad a estos lugares.

…Es evidente que la adulteración de documentos en Colombia está al alcance de cualquier persona y Cali se ha vuelto una emboscada para la ley, en donde adolescentes frecuentan discotecas sin son ni ton, sin revisión ni exigencia alguna a la entrada.

‘Zambomba’ y ‘Valle Café’, en Granada, y ‘Favela’, en Menga, son ‘rumbiaderos’ donde ser menor de edad no tiene gran importancia, pues entre mi generación es bien sabido que ingresan relajados, sin necesidad incluso de presentar un documento ilegal. Es vergonzoso saber que la seguridad contratada para controlar el acceso a estos lugares se hace la de la vista gorda, ignorando por completo los riesgos del indebido y prematuro consumo de alcohol y drogas, tan latente en nuestra sociedad.

...Aunque soy joven y son muchas las curiosidades que tengo, soy consciente de que todo llega a su tiempo y que querer ser adultos a la brava puede traer más consecuencias negativas que beneficios, así muchos no lo entiendan así. Veo con preocupación cómo mis contemporáneos se dejan tentar por lo prohibido, cómo queman etapas, cómo se desligan de lo fundamental y cómo van perdiendo esa esencia a la que curiosamente queremos regresar cuando somos mayores.

Disfrutar sanamente es a lo que todos los jóvenes deberíamos apostarle. Y para ello, es fundamental contar con el acompañamiento de los padres, el adecuado control de los establecimientos públicos y la constante supervisión de las autoridades. Si no son ellos los del ejemplo, ¿quién?”

Mateo De Angulo ‘08 London Olympic SwimmerThe last week of June, the ‘Federación Internacional de Natación’, FINA, confirmed the participation of alumnus Mateo De Angulo ’08 in the 2012 Olympic Games in London. Mateo will represent the national flag in the 400 meter freestyle. He’s the current Colombian national record holder in this event with a time of 3:53.66, record obtained in Indianapolis on March 3, 2011.With this confirmation; Colombia will have three representatives in swimming: Omar Pinzon, Carolina Colorado and Mateo De Angulo.

As a Seminole, De Angulo earned the ACC Swimmer of the Year and ACC Swimmer of the Meet honors in 2012. He ended his collegiate career with an All-American seventh place finish in the 1650 free with a new school records in the distance at 14:42.77 as well as the 1000 mark with a time of 8:54.28. As his head coach, Neil Harper said: "We're excited for him, I've watched him train so hard and set high goals for himself and he deserves it. It’s every kid's dream to go to the Olympics and represent your country and compete against the world's elite. This tremendous opportunity is like nothing else. For me as both an athlete and a coach at the Olympics, it's amazing that this happened to such a great guy and team leader. He's a guy that's earned it."

and I can't wait to represent my country in the best way that I can."

Santiago Grillo ‘06 London Olympic WindsurferSince May, alumnus Santiago Grillo ’06 began training in British waters with the support of a personal trainer for the 2012 London Olympics - Windsurf. Santiago, who is not new to the Olympics because he attended Beijing 2008 and has been medalist in Bolivarianos, Centroamericanos, Panamericanos and World Championships, knows his 38 competitors, the only ones ranked around the world for these Olympics.

It’s amazing how committed Santiago is, not only with windsurf, but with every aspect of his life. His training doesn’t end when he exits the water, it’s just beginning. Santiago must do cardio, lift weights, stretch and swim for strength, endurance and skill to “fly” through thick and thin tide. In addition, he must follow a diet rich in vegetables, proteins and carbohydrates, not to mention get enough hours of rest.

Words from Santiago (July 2012): “Dedicarme al deporte fue completamente diferente del común del egresado del Colegio Bolívar,

que como todos, tenía una muy buena preparación académica, las puertas abiertas en las mejores universidades y el apoyo económico para continuar estudiando. Al terminar el primer semestre de universidad, quise dedicarme tan sólo seis meses a mejorar la técnica y el nivel del deporte que competía ocasionalmente a nivel nacional, el windsurf y luego continuar con los estudios, eso sí, con la buena filosofía que identifica la Comunidad Bolívar, entrenar con los mejores del mundo. Algo tuvo el ambiente, la gente, el estilo de vida que me atrapó y cuando menos me di cuenta, en menos de un año estaba clasificando a Colombia por primera vez en la historia a unos juegos Olímpicos en la modalidad de Tabla Vela – Windsurf. Después de la gran experiencia de competir en Beijing 2008, lo único que quería era regresar a unos juegos y clasificar a Londres 2012 se convirtió en mi nueva meta, el Colegio me dio las herramientas para romper el esquema y hacer del deporte mi forma de vida. Ser Atleta es una profesión que llevo con orgullo y disfruto de todo lo que incorpora; disciplina, capacidad física, tenacidad, agilidad y espíritu de competencia”.

Sebastián Ospina FF’65 Actor

“My name is Sebastián Ospina…I was one of the founding students of Colegio Bolívar in the early 50’s when the school began operating in an old bowling lane near today's soccer stadium. In those days the school only offered from kindergarten through the first two or three primary grades. Every year a new forward grade would be added until finally it would complete up till 11th grade. When that finally came about, the former bowling alley space was insufficient and the school moved to a new construction near the old Horse Race Tract, that later was transformed into the Olympic Pools of Cali.

Much of the school activities and early life were registered by my father's home movie camera…It never crossed his mind that because of his tinkering with film cameras my younger brother, Luis Ospina, would end up as Artistic Director of Cali's International Film Festival, now on its fourth edition, and I would abandon an Engineering career to study acting in New York with Charlie Laughton, Al Pacino's mentor.

One of my crucial childhood recollections is the fact that by circumstance of those early Bolívar years I came to read and write in English before I did in Spanish, my native tongue. In a way this has set me apart from most native Colombians and in some fashion determined what eventually became a long course love affair with the English language. Today, as an actor, a great deal of my craft and voice quality is due to the continual and renewed performance of the greatest poets of the English culture. Shakespeare, T.S. Eliot, Dylan Thomas, Sam Shepard are among my favorites.”

“I am finishing a very successful 35 year career as a Principal in A/OS Schools in Colombia, and for the last 21 years in Monterrey, Mexico. During this time I have been blessed with opportunities to make a difference in the lives of the students, parents and teachers that I have served. My next job will allow me to work with the schools in our region, as the Tri-Association Executive Director in charge of organizing staff development programs for our type of school.

The Bolívar tradition of cultivating an open and flexible mind, an unwavering work ethic, and a sense of social responsibility has served me well! Conversatorio Recuperando Nuestras Memorias

El pasado 20 de febrero dimos inicio al Primer Conversatorio "Recuperando Nuestras Memorias”. Tuvimos como invitados especiales a los tres exalumnos de la primera promoción del Colegio Bolívar, la clase de 1961. Silvia Schiess, Anne Uribe y Diego Fernández de Soto participaron en el Conversatorio con los estudiantes de grado 5°, 8° y 12°. Los estudiantes tuvieron la oportunidad de hacerles preguntas sobre cómo era el Colegio en esa época y recordar anécdotas curiosas. Además, se

contó con una exposición en la Biblioteca de los primeros periódicos del Colegio llamado The Liberator. Continuaremos haciendo estos conversatorios con la promoción que esté celebrando 50 años de egresados.

In Memoriam Pedro Aguado11 de noviembre de 1930 - 4 de febrero de 2012

Es difícil comprimir en unos cuantos párrafos la hermosa parábola vital que Pedro Aguado trazó a su paso entre nosotros, y lo mucho que significó para sus compañeros de trabajo, sus familiares y vecinos. Empecemos por

decir que fue un ciudadano a carta cabal, cumplidor de sus deberes, colaborador con su comunidad y respetuoso hasta la exageración de sus vecinos, del medio ambiente y en general de su barrio y su ciudad. Adicionalmente, como esposo y padre fue un hombre que a pesar de sus orígenes tan humildes (nacido en pleno campo al norte del Valle) o más bien, gracias a sus orígenes tan humildes, pero tan claros en valores y principios elementales de vida, logró conformar en compañía de su inigualable esposa, doña Catalina, una numerosa familia no sólo compuesta por sus ocho hijos (cuatro de ellos estudiaron en el Colegio Bolívar: Elizabeth, Luis, Jorge, y Fernando) sino también a otros familiares como sobrinos, primos, nietos y aún a hermanos como Sebastíán (quien también trabajó como conductor y se jubiló en el Bolívar). Su guía y su apoyo han sido tan apreciados que aún hoy en día, esta gran familia revolotea en torno a ese tronco familiar tan positivo y lleno de tanto amor y enseñanzas que Pedro construyó.

Durante todos sus años en el Colegio (del 1 de septiembre de 1961 al 30 de junio de 1994), Pedro se destacó no sólo como el mejor conductor de los buses, sino que dio muchos aportes adicionales, como coordinador de las rutas (las que mantenía asombrosamente en su memoria y llevaba de una manera práctica a un fichero que se mantenía -no se sabe cómo- siempre actualizado). El colosal desbarajuste que se armó cuando la tecnología llegó al Bolívar y se quiso reemplazar la memoria y las fichas de Pedro por un sofisticado programa computarizado, todavía se recuerda…pero eso es otra historia). Adicionalmente, Pedro colaboraba los fines de semana (para poder alimentar a ocho muchachos bien sanos….) en labores de jardinería, carpintería, vigilancia, pintura, electricidad, plomería, mecánica…..y en todo lo que fuese necesario. Otro ejemplo de cuán único e irremplazable es Pedro fue cuando hace más de cincuenta años descubrió eso que hoy llaman pomposamente “Servicio al Cliente”….él sencillamente se dio cuenta que para poder atender y entender adecuadamente a padres, profesores y estudiantes debía aprender inglés….en el Instituto Colombo Americano quedó el registro de su especial sentido de la responsabilidad y el tesón…pero tampoco nos distraigamos con esa historia.

De su gestión como padre y orientador de sus hijos y familia hablan muy bien personas valiosas como Liz, Nora, Diego Alejandro, Camilo, Juan Guillermo y Diana Cristina, todos ellos eficientes trabajadores y buenos estudiantes, pero por sobre todo, excelentes personas, responsables y confiables.

Es por eso que en la celebración reciente de sus ochenta años, Mr. Dale Swall, uno de los más emblemáticos directores del Colegio le escribió un sincero mensaje en donde reconocía “la milla extra” que Pedro siempre le ofreció y que le hizo más

fácil su gestión profesional y además su vivencia personal en Colombia, ya que lo consideraba su amigo y como tal muchas veces confraternizaron. Hermoso homenaje a un hombre sencillo de parte de un connotado y todavía activo profesional de la educación internacional.

A los diferentes eventos importantes que en vida se le ofrecieron a Pedro, cumpleaños especiales, fiesta de despedida, invitaciones a efemérides en el Colegio, la participación de tantos y tantos ex trabajadores y ex alumnos de la institución han sido vibrantes y plenas de recuerdos especiales, todos con un mensaje positivo (aunque en su momento pudiesen haber sido difíciles, como cuando Pedro se regresó al filo de las 6 pm al Colegio con un grupo de estudiantes que iban muy energizados por el partido de fútbol que acababan de jugar y no atendieron su legendaria frase: “be quiet”….pero eso también es otra historia.

De varias partes del mundo llegaron para todas esas celebraciones mensajes llenos de amor y agradecimiento por la influencia que en algún momento el irremplazable Pedro ejerció sobre todos quienes tuvimos el privilegio de conocerle.

No podía ser menos el pasado 4 de febrero, cuando Pedro se fue con su caja de herramientas a reparar lo que no estuviese funcionando en el cielo: el caluroso abrazo a sus deudos de parte de muchos compañeros de trabajo fue y es motivo de orgullo y de compromiso para honrar la memoria y el esfuerzo vital de Pedro. El sonoro e interminable aplauso con el que todos, familiares y amigos lo despidieron fue un sencillo, pero merecido homenaje a un hombre que dio todo por su familia y por su amado Colegio Bolívar.
