Secondary School Headlines The CIS Mentoring Program Makes a Difference

The CIS mentoring program provides opportunities for High school students to act as mentors to Middle School students. Research has always shown that youth benefit from caring and consistent relationships with peers. The CIS peer mentoring program has been designed to address the growing need for such supportive relationships among stu-dents and to aid them in their academic and personal development. The friendships formed through our mentoring program help our students to get through their adolescent years successfully. The mentors build a caring, sharing and helping relationship with their mentee. They invest their time, know-how and experience in enhancing the personal growth of their fellow students. According to Victoria B., a CIS Mentor, “I had always thought from the beginning of when the program began (end of last school year, 2010), that this was a great idea! Aside from the fact that its great for a middle school student to be able to talk to a high school student, its always nice for new kids to the school to be a part of a group right away (as a mentor or mentee). It also lets either a new mentee or a new mentor, get to know the other mentees/mentors around them; since they'll be going to school with them. The Mentoring Program is not only for the mentee's to talk to their mentor's academically or socially, its also a great way for us as High School students to interact with the Mid-dle School students (and vice versa); this makes our school close again like it once was!” Another mentor, Dajsha S., says of her experience, “For the past few months, the mentoring program has been a joy to work in. I've gained new experiences, and learned new things. The thing I like most about the program is that you get to help create a positive impact on someone's life. It's a great program and I encourage others to make the ef-fort and get involved.” Thank you to Victoria, Dajsha and the many other CIS mentoring program participants.

Ally M. and Alejandro O. Participate in the Cayman Islands Youth Parliament

On Monday, members of the Cayman Islands Youth Parliament, including CIS students Alejandro O. (Grade 10) and Ally McRae (Grade 11), convened an official session to observe Commonwealth Day. The group met in the Legislative Assembly and enjoyed an event at the Governor’s House following the session. “Youth Parliament was a great experience. We were given the rare opportunity to see and learn about the inner working of the parliament. it was a very hands-on experience and we made some friends along the way. We now know what it's like to be a Caymanian politician,” said Ally M. after the experience. Well done Alejandro & Ally!

March 18, 2011

My parents are originally from Glasgow in Scotland, they moved to Grand Cayman shortly after they got married. After a few years in Cay-man my mom had me and my sister Alison. I have lived in Cayman all my life.

I have only lived in Grand Cayman.

I was born and have lived in Grand Cayman for 17 years.

I have been at CIS for 7 years.

I would have to say 3 of my best personality traits are being open-minded, honest and caring.

I would have to say 3 of my worst personality traits are being impatient, insen-sitive and at times lazy.

My Favorite family tradition is when I have Christmas dinner with my family in Scotland and we celebrate to-gether.

If I had to pick one place in my town to bring a tourist I would bring them to Seven Mile Beach. I would take a tourist to Seven Mile beach because I think it’s one of the nicest places to relax and see. I think a tourist would love watching the sunsets from Seven mile and swimming in the blue ocean.

I have a lot of favorite movies but one of my all time favorites is The Dark Night.

Other than school work I enjoy going out with friends and family, going to the gym, watching movies, playing golf and working on photography.

If I could have any superpower I want the ability to fly. The reason I would like to have this power is because I could fly and see different places in the world. Also I also think the general feeling of flying would be amaz-ing.

My most cherished childhood memory was when me and my sister would go to the beach together and play in the waves.

My favorite place in the world is New York City.

Once quality I admire the most in others is honesty.

If I had to evacuate my house immediately one thing I would grab on the way out would be my computer.

My favorite quote is - “When one door is closed, don't you know, another is open.”
