BLACKAWTON PRIMARY SCHOOL

Children from Blackawton Primary school have used their creative skills to turn waste plastic into artworks making up a ‘School of Fish’.

It started with a summer beach clean on Slapton Sands organised by South West Water during which they found many nurdles, the tiny pellets of raw material from which nearly all our plastic products are made. One child commented that they would make great fish eyes and so the idea was born.

Bags of rubbish were collected and the children, lead by local environmentalist Fran Newman, created these artworks to spark debate and highlight the enormous plastic problem the world faces today.

It isn’t necessary to find something amusing in every aspect of life but it helps. Some people take everything seriously: some people take nothing seriously. Maybe we should remember that Tony Hancock’s last school report said: ‘This boy seems to think that he can take life as a joke’. He went to the same school as me so I’m hoping I’m still learning from his mistakes.

EXHIBITION ON SCREEN – YOUNG PICASSOTue 5 Feb, 7.30pm£12

Many films have dealt with Picasso’s later years – the art, the affairs and the wide circle of friends. But where did this all begin?

Three cities play a key role: Malaga, Barcelona and Paris. The film explores the influence of each on the artist using behind-the-scenes access to some of the world’s greatest galleries and museums. It focuses on specific artworks from these early years, looking carefully at two key early periods – the so-called Blue Period and Rose Period – and on to Les Demoiselles d'Avignon, which Picasso painted aged just 25.

Disillusioned with life, the aged philosopher Faust calls upon Satan to help him. The devil Méphistophélès appears and strikes a bargain with the philosopher: he will give him youth and the love of the beautiful Marguerite, if Faust will hand over his soul. Faust agrees.

Gounod's Faust (1859) is based on Part I of Goethe's epic poem Faust, which was a major inspiration for many composers during the 19th century and beyond. Gounod added a ballet to Act V when Faust received its first Paris Opéra staging in 1869.

Come into the forest; dare to change your state of mind.

Rosalind is banished, wrestling with her heart and her head. With her cousin by her side, she journeys to a world of exile where barriers are broken down and all can discover their deeper selves. Director Kimberley Sykes (Dido, Queen of Carthage) directs a riotous, exhilarating version of Shakespeare’s romantic comedy.

This film marks the 350th anniversary of Rembrandt's death, and explores the major show of the artist’s works hosted by London’s National Gallery and Amsterdam’s Rijksmuseum.

Rembrandt’s life story is interwoven throughout, alongside behind - the -scenes preparations at these world famous institutions, as this deeply moving film seeks to explore the truth about the man behind the legend.

Leonora falls in love with Don Alvaro, but when her father forbids their marriage, a fatal accident triggers a drama of obsession, vengeance and tragedy. Jonas Kaufmann and Anna Netrebko star in Verdi's epic La forza del destino (The Force of Destiny) an opera which demands the very best of singers for its powerful music and the fullest theatrical treatment for its story of bitter revenge pursued across miles and years.

It is directed by Christof Loy and conducted by Antonio Pappano, Music Director of The Royal Opera.
