What is the CaTS Technology?

CaTS is a field proven Cableless Telemetry System capable of transmitting

pressure and temperature data from a downhole transmitter to a surface receiver in real time using electro magnetic (EM) signals.

CaTS technology is retrofittable and can be installed into an existing well.

CaTS telemetry is duplex and thus also capable of transmitting commands from surface to a downhole receiver; this enables the control of downhole components.

CaTS technology is addressable which enables multiple system installations in a given well for multi-zone monitoring.

CaTS uses the metallic structure of the well as a conduit along which to transmit the electromagnetic signals.

CaTS Technology Fundamentals

• This technology is based on Electro-magnetic (EM) through tubing / casing communications

• Uses standard completion hardware - No packer or plug penetrations required

• Does not require a tubing string in the well to communicate along

• Zero signal attenuation due to cemented pipe, cement or bridge plugs

• Works in flowing or shut-in wells and is independent of well fluid type

• Flexible deployment options Wireline / coiled tubing Externally mounted / casing conveyed Full bore mandrel for conveyance with a lower completion

CaTS Technology Retrofit Installation Overview

Gauge is conveyed into the well on wireline / coiled tubing, or with the completion Set in a nipple profile or below a bridge plug Pressure / temperature data is encoded and transmitted up the completion via an Electromagnetic (EM) signal Signal is collected at surface using a topside receiver, decoded and stored locally, or transmitted onwards Signals can also be transmitted from topside-down to control downhole valves or to trigger the actuation of completion components

E&A well testing is primarily about gathering data:- • Fluids - gas or oil, PVT properties, surface processing requirements and issues, pipeline design etc.

• Flow rates and how this relates to the permeability of the reservoir

• Flow rates and how this relates to the completion efficiency – skin, length and conductivity

• Reservoir Continuity – what is the drainage area, are there any nearby boundaries, is the reservoir compartmentalised? Reducing uncertainty in these areas is the key objective of ART

Why are Well Tests performed during E&A ?

CaTS Equipment – Data Upload

Portable Command System (PCS) Dunking Transceiver

Dunking Cable (70m) Data Recovery

• Data from the seabed receiver is uploaded using the surface transceiver system, shown opposite

• The transceiver is connected to the PCS via the dunking and deck cables

• On the MODU, the transceiver can be deployed through the moonpool or over the side or the rig

• A support or supply vessel is normally used for routine data uploads

• The transceiver is deployed on a winch or crane line approx 10m below the surface

• P, T, date and time are decoded by the PCS and presented in Excel

Conclusions

• CaTS is being applied throughout the well life cycle from E&A, through development, production and even post-final abandonment.

• Where existing wells have no permanent monitoring installed, then the retrofit capability of CaTS enables field-wide, real time reservoir monitoring of mature fields to become a reality

• The highest value reservoir information often comes from places in the wellbore where cables cannot be used - CaTS provides a solution to gather this data

• CaTS can be used to control downhole devices, opening the door to the delivery of both retrofit and completion based Smart Well Wireless Solutions

• CaTS new technology is contributing to Safety Enhancement and Value Realization throughout the well lifecycle Reduced frequency of well interventions means less wire in the well Real time data to desk allows for effective reservoir management An improved reservoir understanding enables optimal exploitation of reserves Verification of pressure barrier sealing provides assurance of abandonment

integrity
