MontageDescriptionThis is an inspirational montage made by blending 2 images and adding an inspirational quote by President Monson.

DateMay 30, 2015

Course/InstructorComm 130 15 Emily Kunz

Program(s)/ToolsAdobe Photoshop CC

ObjectivesTo create a seamless montage with an inspirational quote.

ProcessI first browsed through quotes and images until I found something that spoke to me. I then overlaid the images and got them in positions that I was happy with.

Once my images were in place, I added layer masks on both of my images. I then painted away the hard edges with black paint at 100% opacity with a soft edged brush until I was pleased with the outcome.I then reduced the opacity of the brush and started intermingling the images, working at different opacities and flows to get the right effect. I also reduced the opacity of the rain picture to 86% to help the two images to blend together better. I also added a sharpen filter to the rain, so it would look more crisp and sharp.

I added the text from the quote. I chose the color from the dark color on the man, so it would fit in with the color scheme. I placed the text over the sun, so it would contrast better, as it was getting a little lost in the sky.

BrochureDescriptionA trifold brochure with some health tips.

DateJuly 7, 2015

Course/InstructorComm 130 15Emily Kunz

Program(s)/ToolsAdobe InDesign/Adobe Illustrator/Adobe Photoshop

ObjectivesTo create a fun and interesting flier to attract people who are looking for a health coach to the company Fit 4 Life.

ProcessThe first thing I did was to create my logo. I made this logo in Adobe Illustrator, using shapes tools and outlining the words.

I then set up a trifold design in InDesign. Next, I created flowing lines across the pages using the pen tool. I copied the design for the inside spread. I used grid lines to make sure that the lines would match up on the front and inside spreads. I then added images and outlined some to create a text wrap.

LogoDescriptionThis is a personal logo for Javier Gandara, who works in finance.

DateJune 6, 2015

Course/InstructorComm 130 15Emily Kunz

Program(s)/ToolsAdobe Illustrator CC

ObjectivesTo create a powerful logo that would appeal to high networth individuals and companies in the financial industry.

ProcessThe first step of my process was to sketch. I sketched about 30 different ideas. Then I brought 3 of the most promising ideas into illustrator and added color. I then let people vote on those the one that they liked the most. Obviously Javier’s vote counted most. For the design that was chosen, I had combined the G and J, with an elongated J. I also created a vector lion, which is regal. I then took this design and did some refining with details, such as making the GJ really blend with the mane and I got rid of some stray edges. I then found a new color scheme to better suit the industry.

PhotoDesignDescriptionThis project is to demonstrate good photography and image editing skills, while incorporating color into the poster using the original image colors.

DateMay 23, 2015

Course/InstructorComm 130 15 Emily Kunz

Program(s)/ToolsNikon D800 and Photoshop CC

ObjectivesTo create and inspiring image to help people detach from the day to day and focus on something uplifting and relaxing.

ProcessI have a hard time being creative on demand. I knew I wanted sky in my image, and to be the main focus, therefore I went with a blue color scheme. I went out and took a bunch of pictures with a quote that I have had in mind lately. (The future belongs to those who believe in the beauty of their dreams.) I then looked through the pictures that I took and found one that I loved and that fit a color scheme that I had in mind, since there were several blues, I could do a monochromatic blue.

I shot the picture with my Nikon D800 and my 50mm lens. I then brought the image into Photoshop CC and adjusted levels, sharpness, saturation and color. In my 8.5 x 11 layout, I added my photo, made a copy of the layer and made it a little bit larger in the background and reduced the opacity of this layer to create a dreamy border. Then I used the eyedropper tool to find the colors in my color scheme, which I incorporated in some shapes and in the words in the design. The colors were a little bland still, so I searched around and found some colors to brighten it up.

Business CardDescriptionThis is a business card with a logo I created with my initials. It coordinates with the letterhead also in this portfolio.

DateJune 11, 2015

Course/InstructorComm 130 15Emily Kunz

Program(s)/ToolsAdobe Illustrator CC and InDesign CC

ObjectivesTo create an appealing letterhead that matches my personality and style.

ProcessFirst I sketched out a bunch of ideas on paper with my initials. After coming up with several that I thought would translate well into a logo, I picked one. I created the logo in Adobe Illustrator. I used shapes to mask out a c g out of a g. I then created a circle and placed it off center to make it interesting. Once the logo was created, I used InDesign using my placed illustrator document.

For my business card, I used a black background and placed the red logo on top. I centered the logo and made sure everything was aligned. On the front of the card, I then added my name and information on the left hand side. The page looked a little stale, so I added a watermark of the logo under the information at 3% opacity.

On to my letterhead and added the same information in the top left corner, with my logo in a black box on top of it. I also added a watermark of my logo and put a thin black rectangle on the bottom, just to keep it grounded.

Event AdDescriptionThis is a full-bleed color event ad to promote a fundraiser benefiting the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia using only Microsoft Word and a scanner.

DateMay 16, 2015

Course/InstructorComm 130 15 Emily Kunz

Program(s)/ToolsHP Color Scanner, Microsoft Word, and a PDF converter website (PDF2JPG.net)

ObjectivesTo create a fun, colorful design that appeals to young girls and their mothers.

ProcessI scanned the image, and then used the color tool in Microsoft Word to choose the colors from the hair piece. I then created blocks of color around the image. I considered adding borders to the picture, but decided that the white space created a border in itself. I wanted a font that was very dreamy and princess-y (not a word). I found several beautiful script typefaces, but ended up going with Edwardian Script, because it was flown and beautiful, but was thick enough to provide some visual weight on the piece. I then found a coordinating typeface for the body copy. I ended up going with Adobe Caslon Pro. I felt the Sans Serif was a great combination with the ornate title. I then played around with adding some white text to create more rhythm in the piece, and simplified elements that seems distracting and unnecessary.

Web PageDescriptionThis is a website designed to showcase a logo I created.

DateJune 26, 2015

Course/InstructorComm 130 15 Emily Kunz

Program(s)/ToolsText Wrangler, Adobe Illustrator and Adobe Photoshop

ObjectivesThis logo was designed for a financial company. Their audience would be those that are interested in a strong company who can handle their assets aggressively yet still protect their assets.

ProcessI created this webpage using CSS and HTML in TextWrangler. I used a project folder, where I have my CSS file, my HTML file and my logo. I linked all of these in my HTML document. I then found the hex colors with the color picker in Photoshop and created my website based on these colors. I then chose fonts from google fonts that would be found on any computer, and added some padding in my document.

FlierDescriptionThis is a flier in black and white intended to promote a graduate leadership conference.

DateMay 8, 2015

Course/InstructorComm 130 15 Emily Kunz

Program(s)/ToolsAdobe InDesign

ObjectivesTo promote a conference for graduating seniors.

ProcessThis first thing I did in creating this flier was to sketch four different ideas of the project. I then chose my top two and tried them out in a digital layout, in InDesign and went with the stronger of the two and worked a little more in detail. I used a large picture to draw the attention, and used a gradient at the bottom to create a foundation. I added a catch-phrase at the top to draw the attention of the viewer, and made it in two levels to create motion and interest. I lined up the “c” in competitive with the “r” in graduate and the “l” in leadership to create alignment and continuity. I used the ruler tool. I also used the tools in the paragraph and character menus to create the correct alignment and feel. The main FOCUS principles I used are Formulate, Organize and Unify.
