22ND SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME PAGE 4 AUGUST 29, 2021
I’m going to take this bulletin article as an opportunity to explain something I’m not
prepared to post on YouTube, for fear of being censored.
As of Wednesday, August 11th, I’m fully vaccinated. I’m not particularly happy about it; I was hoping COVID would go away in such a manner that I wouldn’t be required to get one. However, in mid-July I finally reached my tipping point: I need a vaccination to enter hospitals and nursing homes (and therefore minister to people in need), and I have some travel plans in the mix that will be significantly riskier without it. The final significant factor is the fact that the delta variant is coming our way, which I no longer feel comfortable ignoring as the next scare tactic o’ the day.
That said, I wish to echo my major statement about vaccines as they apply to us today. I am NOT against vaccines as a general rule. They do significantly more good than harm, and the Church’s general encouragement of vaccine participation is well-documented. I also hold no one in disdain for having a different point of view with respect to this thorny matter of bioethics. To put things in perspective, between my family, friends, and parishioners, people who are in a medical field are split about 60/40 regarding the COVID-19 vaccines. Over half of my family is resistant to getting their shot, and plenty of people at Saint Matthews and Sacred Heart have expressed their profound concerns and hesitations to me. At this time, I have no less than five people who have requested (or will soon request) a letter from me as a character
reference to their employer for a request of exemption, with respect to mandatory vaccination policies. I will happily write those letters with absolutely no hesitation, as I consider this matter one of personal liberties and rights.
My frustration, more than anything else, is with the overall attitude of disrespect, intimidation, and pressure that's so prevalent right now. I'll remind you that the media thrives on such attitudes: controversy and public outrage is where the money is made, and a fixation on controversy and public outrage very rarely the whole story. Therefore, it my wish that we all scale back a bit on what social media is telling us: less panic, less demand for others to adhere to our personal demands, and more understanding that we are all coping with this pandemic as best as we can.
As far as my personal experience is concerned, getting the vaccine was fine, I suffered no substantial side-effects. More than anything, it's a relief to be "done with it", and move on with my life and work. However, I am one person of many, and I have fewer health concerns than most; that affords me some flexibility in decisions such as this one.
I wish you all safety and health in the months ahead... and I hope and pray that you may acquire that health and safety on your own terms as much as possible.

Lay Ministers Needed We have a great need for more Lay Ministers in every area: Lectors, Ushers, Servers, and Eucharistic Ministers. Being off for so many months and all the precautions that were needed due to the pandemic greatly reduced the number of ministers we have willing to serve. This creates an unfair burden to serve more often on
the ministers we have left. Many hands make light work, and many helpers means everyone can be scheduled less frequently.
It doesn’t take a huge time commitment if we can get enough volunteers, and most of the time is spent when you would normally be at church already.
Please consider stepping up and using your gifts of time and commitment to help serve your parish community and become a more active participant in the Mass.
Talk to Mike Strock after Mass or contact the parish office.

MUSIC MINISTRY Music Ministry Season 2021 – 2022
We have not had any choirs or rehearsals since March of 2020 due to the coronavirus pandemic. As of April 27, 2021, we were given permission by the Archdiocese to resume choir rehearsals and choirs leading the assembly in song beginning May 3, 2021. At that time the decision was made for our cluster to wait until September to begin.
With that being said, we will resume choir rehearsal for Sacred Heart and Saint Matthew the Tuesday and Wednesday after Labor Day.
Choir season runs from the end of summer through Pentecost, and we would love for you all to join us for the whole year, if possible, but if you can only commit to part of a year, please feel free to join us for as long as you can. We will have rehearsal at our two worship sites to accommodate your busy schedules. The same music will be rehearsed and used for Liturgies. Rehearsals will take place at St. Matthew on Tuesday evenings beginning September 7, 2021 at 6:30 p.m. Rehearsals will take place at Sacred Heart on Thursday evenings beginning September 8, 2021 at 6:30 p.m. We will start off the season by preparing for our Sunday Liturgies along with Advent and Christmas music. Come join us for camaraderie and praise through music and prayer.
Do you want to join our parish choirs, but cannot make our evening rehearsal because of other commitments or you are not confident driving at night? On Tuesday September 7, 2021 I will offer day time rehearsal at 10:30 a.m. for those willing to make such a commitment.
Our Youth Choir is made up of parish youth from 4th grade through 11th grade. I am trying something different this season by having rehearsals after the 9:30 a.m. mass on Sunday morning. This will eliminate having rehearsals on Monday evening after religious education class or before class on Wednesday. Choir rehearsals will begin Sunday, September 19,
2021 after the 9:30 a.m. Mass. We will rehearse the first and third Sundays of the month.
Our Instrument Ensemble is made up of all ages. Our instrumental group (band) has been a very integral part of our parish community for many years. I would love to see this group grow. If you enjoy playing an instrument, this group is for you! Instrumentalists add to the beauty of music at liturgies. We enhance and support congregational participation through this ministry. Our rehearsals will begin on Sunday September 26, 2021 after the 9:30 a.m. Mass. We will rehearse the second and fourth Sundays of the month. Come join our group, we have a lot of fun and we’d love to have you.
Contact me at 920-557-1017, email me at [email protected] or see me after mass. Liturgical Ministers Schedule
for Sacred Heart and St. Matthew was sent out.
The next schedule covering September 1 through Thanksgiving (November 25) was sent out this week. If you did not receive your schedule already by email or by mail in the next few days, please download a copy from the website app or contact the parish office: (920) 485-0694 x221, or [email protected]. If you are interested in becoming a Lay Minister, please contact us and let us know. We need additional ministers in all areas.
Remember, you are responsible for finding your own substitutes once the schedule is set.
