Neither mother expected to be pregnant (Elizabeth was very old, Mary was not married.) Both were announced by an angel; both were given a name by the angel (Luke 1:13 and 1:31.) All who heard about the births were amazed (Luke 1:66 and 2:18.) It should be no surprise that the two mothers got together to discuss these things (Luke 1:39–56.) Most likely, talking about their experiences helped them to believe what the angel had said. You might say Elizabeth prepared Mary to be the mother of the Savior. And years later John would help people prepare to accept Jesus as their Savior. Now the Church has always taught that saints are not just admired, they are to be imitated. So how do we imitate John? Probably not by living in the desert and eating locusts and wild honey. (I’ll take the honey, but hold the locusts.) Let’s look at a few of the things John is known for and how we can learn from them. John lived in the desert to prepare for his ministry. How do we prepare to serve the Lord? Have you ever gone on a retreat, not just because it was required by your school or job, but because you wanted to take time to be with the Lord? Many retreat houses have weekend retreats for those who can’t take off work. The point of a retreat is not just to get away, but to learn how to pray or to deepen your prayer life. As we learn to pray better, we get to know the Lord better. That brings us to the second way to imitate John: Lead others to Christ. We need to know the Lord to bring others to him. With the power of the Holy Spirit we received in the sacrament of Confirmation, we can give good examples of Christian love, share our faith, stand up for justice, and encourage others to grow in faith. Like John, we may also meet resistance, but we can be confident that the Lord will be with us always. —Tom Schmidt, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co., Inc. BIRTH OF JOHN THE BAPTIST HOLD THE LOCUSTS

The birth of John is much like the birth of Jesus.

LA NATIVIDAD DE SAN JUAN BAUTISTA 17 DE JUNIO DE 2018

MADURO Y LISTO Los profesores y entrenadores conocen cómo

MISSIONARY COOPERATIVE APPEAL The Congregation of the Rogationist Fathers was founded by St. Hannibal Maria Di Francia. It is engaged in missionary activities in 25 countries all over the world. Fr. Devassy Painadath will share his mission experience with us next weekend. In India, the Rogationist Fathers are working among the orphans, street, abandoned, school dropouts and working children. They have an institute for the street children in Nalgonda, Telegana State. Since they get most of the children from the street, they have to provide everything. No government

help is extended to this work. Some of the children cannot go to school for formal education. The Rogationist Fathers want to train them in certain professions such as plumbing, carpentry, printing, welding, electrical works, etc., so as to insert them to the main stream of the society and to give them back their lost dignity and a smile on their faces. They need some help to buy some machinery to train the children. They do not have any institution in India that generate some income for their missionary activities. They trust entirely on the divine providence for their missionary activities. In India, evangelization is possible only through the education of these needy children. Let us be part of this noble mission by extending our generous support to the Rogationist Missionary activities.

IMPROVEMENT FUND COLLECTION The Improvement Fund Collection will be postponed to the weekend of July 7th/8th, due to the Missionary Cooperative Appeal taking place next weekend. We thank you all for your generosity and support.
