HOLLENDORFER BARREDFROM BREEDERS= CUP
Officials at Breeders= Cup Limited have announced that they
will not allow trainer Jerry Hollendorfer to participate in this
year=s World Championships at Santa Anita, keeping with The
Stronach Group=s ban on him racing horses under his name at
the Arcadia oval and its other properties.
The following statement was released Friday:
ABreeders= Cup leads by example in the conduct of
Thoroughbred racing at the highest levels of safety and integrity
for its athletes. We have partnered with Santa Anita to
implement extensive reforms related to medication practices,
testing protocols, veterinary exams, injury management, onsite
requirements and racing surface testing in preparation for the
2019 World Championships. Earlier this year, The Stronach
Group made the decision to prohibit Jerry Hollendorfer from
participating at all TSG-owned tracks, including Santa Anita. As
announced by the Chairman of the Board, Fred Hertrich, and
consistent with Santa Anita=s position as host of this year=s
World Championships, we will honor their house rule and Jerry
Hollendorfer will not be permitted to enter horses at this year's
event.@
A ruling in the Los Angeles Superior Court Wednesday upheld
Hollendorfer=s Santa Anita exclusion.

CATHOLIC BOY RETIRED TO CLAIBORNE Catholic Boy (More Than Ready--Song of Bernadette, by
Bernardini), a Grade I winner on both turf and dirt, has been
retired to Claiborne Farm. His fee for the 2020 breeding season
will be $25,000 LFSN.
Campaigned by Robert LaPenta, Madaket Stables, Siena Farm
and Twin Creeks Racing, the Jonathan Thomas pupil won the
GIII With Anticipation S. on turf and the GII Remsen S. on dirt in
2017. He continued to show talent on both surfaces during his
2018 sophomore campaign capturing the GIII Pennine Ridge S.
and GI Belmont Derby on the grass and following that with a win
in the GI Travers S. on the Saratoga main track.
The bay kicked off 2019 with a victory in the GII Dixie S. on the
Pimlico lawn and was second in Belmont=s GII Suburban H. on
dirt. Catholic Boy retires with a record of 13-7-2-0 and earnings
of $2,134,000.

Hollendorfer cont. from p1 AWe just found out within the last half hour what the decision
will be. Obviously, it=s disappointing and devastating news,@
Drew Couto, Hollenderfor=s attorney, said Friday. AHe=s
exceedingly disappointed. He did not see it coming.@
Couto said that he was unable at this time to publicly speculate
as to what might happen to the horses Hollendorfer intended to
run under his name at the Breeders= Cup.
AAs one might imagine, there are many moving pieces, and so,
we need to sit down, calmly digest everything that has gone on,
and take whatever steps are necessary so that Jerry=s clients are
not unnecessarily and inadvertently penalized as a result of the
Breeders= Cup=s decision,@ Couto said.
The decision of the Breeders= Cup, Couto added, is the
consequence of a Aflawed process,@ in that the trainer has yet to
receive the Adue process@ afforded him legally.
Indeed, in court filings prior to Wednesday=s hearing at the Los
Angeles Superior Court, representatives for TSG argued that
Hollendorfer has been given Athe provision of Fair Procedure@ at
a meeting at Santa Anita Sept. 12 attended by Hollendorfer and
his legal team, along with representatives from TSG and the
California Thoroughbred Trainers.
Hollendorfer=s position, Couto told the TDN Wednesday, is that
the September meeting doesn=t constitute Afair procedure@
because it didn=t occur before the trainer was barred from Santa
Anita=s grounds in June.
AThis is why we have been so devoted to the notion of fair
process and procedure,@ Couto explained Friday. AIt hasn=t
occurred yet, and this is the consequence of it. Unfortunately.
It=s punitive on Jerry, and it=s punitive on his clients, and it=s a
black eye for the industry. Terrible.@
DAM OF EIGHT RINGS SUPPLEMENTED TO
KEENOV Purely Hot (Pure Prize--Wood Not, Kissing Kris), the dam of
Grade I winner Eight Rings (Empire Maker), has been
supplemented to Book 1 of the Keeneland November Sale. The
11-year-old mare is in foal to Union Rags and sells as Hip 274G
with Taylor Made.
AWe are excited to offer another exceptional broodmare in
Purely Hot,@ WinStar Farm President, CEO and Racing Manager
Elliott Walden said. ATwo years ago, we sold the dams of four
Grade I winners at Keeneland and hope to replicate their
success.@
Purely Hot won 12 races, including the GIII Whimsical S., and
earned $426,905. She was purchased by WinStar for $250,000
in foal to Bodemeister at the 2014 Fasig-Tipton November Sale.

Eight Rings Dam cont.
Eight Rings, a $520,000 KEESEP buy, earned the >TDN Rising
Star= nod for his debut win and romped by six lengths last out in
the GI American Pharoah S. Sept. 27. He is one of the early
favorites for the GI Breeders= Cup Juvenile.
AAdding Purely Hot was a massive addition for our
consignment,@ Taylor Made=s Mark Taylor said. AShe gives me
the same feeling as the dam of American Pharoah when we sold
her at the end of his 2-year-old campaign.@
Keeneland also announced two additional supplements to the
November Sale: Grade III winner Gloryzapper (Hip 274H), a
daughter of Ghostzapper in foal to Tapit, and the 3-year-old
winning Flatter filly Eve Harrington (Hip 274F), a half-sister to
Grade I-winning GI Breeders= Cup Turf contender and millionaire
Arklow (Arch).
Taylor Made Sales Agency, agent, consigns Gloryzapper, whose
first foal, a yearling filly by Medaglia d=Oro, sold for $1.1 million
last month at the Keeneland September Yearling Sale.
Hunter Valley Farm, agent, consigns Eve Harrington, also a
half-sister to multiple graded stakes winner and
$489,660-earner Maraud. She is cataloged as a broodmare
prospect.

DAM OF SWEET MELANIA HEADLINES
LATEST FTKNOV SUPPLEMENTS Sweet N Discreet (Discreet Cat--West Side Dancer, by Gone
West), dam of GII Jessamine S. heroine Sweet Melania
(American Pharoah), is one of three new supplements to the
Nov. 5 Fasig-Tipton November Sale. Offered by Lane=s End as Hip
216 in foal to Liam=s Map, the chestnut won four of 12 starts,
including the Florida Sunshine Millions Distaff and was runner-
up in the GII Sabin S. en route to amassing earnings of $366,447.
The half-sister to GSW Travelin Man summoned $1.1 million at
the 2014 FTKNOV Sale.
The other two supplements are both weanlings. Hill >n= Dale
sells Hip 215, a Malibu Moon colt out of GSW Win McCool
(Giant=s Causeway), making him a half-brother to GSP Cool
Beans (Candy Ride {Arg}) and the dam of MGISW Magnum
Moon (Malibu Moon). Hip 217 is a son of Keen Ice and
Bourbonesque (Dynaformer), making him a half to GI Awesome
Again S. hero Mongolian Groom (Hightail).
Fasig-Tipton will continue to accept approved supplemental
entries up until the Breeders' Cup.
CONSTITUTION IS NEW STAR FOR WINSTAR Constitution, by Tapit from Baffled, by Distorted Humor, is the
new rising star in the WinStar stallion barn. As of Thursday,
Constitution was ranked second behind American Pharoah
(Pioneerof the Nile) on the first-crop sire list with less than
$25,000 separating the two as the high-dollar and
game-changing Breeders' Cup races loom in a few weeks, but he
leads the list with three graded winners, one of which is Gl
Champagne S. winner Tiz the Law, a leading juvenile colt this
year. Constitution stood his first season at stud in 2016 for
$25,000 and was down to $15,000 by 2019, but will cover mares
at a $40,000 fee for next year based on the success he's shown
so far. WinStar has had "over 100 applications without
soliciting," said Elliott Walden, the farm's president, CEO, and
racing manager by phone on Thursday. Nothing speaks of
success like demand.

2019 PERFORMANCE POINTS TO STRONG 2020 KEENELAND JANUARY SALEThe 2019 Keeneland January Horses
of All Ages Sale broke records across
the board. The $5 million sale of
Champion Abel Tasman to Coolmore
tied for the top price paid in the
sale’s history, but that was just the
beginning. 2019 delivered the highest
gross sales since 2008 ($46.7 million),
an increase of nearly 34% year-over-
year, and a record average and record-
equaling median. The success of 2019
anticipates even greater opportunity
for sellers in 2020.

Constitution=s Tiz the Law | Sarah K Andrew
Taking Stock cont.
Bred by the partnership of Grapestock LLC and Fox Hill Farms
in Kentucky and campaigned by Twin Creeks and WinStar, >TDN
Rising Star= Constitution was unraced at two, won the Gl Besilu
Florida Derby at three and the Gl Donn H. at four, and went to
stud with a record of four wins from eight starts and $1,031,596
in earnings. At 16.1 hands, he's a tall and leggy bay Tapit who'd
cost Twin Creeks and WinStar $400,000 at the Fasig-Tipton
Saratoga select yearling sale in 2012, and he's that rare
well-bred yearling purchase that more than made back his
auction price on the racetrack. Syndicated upon retirement with
both WinStar and Twin Creeks retaining sizeable interests, the
horse was popular at stud from the beginning, and now with a
successful first crop of 2-year-olds behind him, his connections
are set to reap even more rewards next year.
Constitution was trained by Todd Pletcher, who, by the way,
should be anointed as a stallion maker, not just at WinStar,
where he trained the farm's More Than Ready (Southern Halo),
Speightstown (Gone West), Always Dreaming (Bodemeister),
Audible (Into Mischief), Commissioner (A.P. Indy), Daredevil
(More Than Ready), Outwork (Uncle Mo), Overanalyze (Dixie
Union) and Super Saver (Maria's Mon), but for his incredible
mark on this year's first-crop list alone. In addition to No. 2
Constitution, he trained No. 3 Competitive Edge (Super Saver),
No. 4 Liam's Map (Unbridled's Song), No. 5 Khozan (Distorted
Humor), No. 6 Palace Malice (Curlin), and No. 10 Carpe Diem
(Giant's Causeway)--who's also at WinStar. Cont. p7

WinStar appears as if it can do no wrong these days. It was just
last year that the entity raced Triple Crown winner Justify (Scat
Daddy) as the majority owner and cashed out on his windfall
sale to Coolmore, and without skipping a beat the farm has
developed Constitution as a
potential heir to leading sire
Tapit and also bred perhaps the
most impressive 2-year-old colt
of the year, >Rising Star= Eight
Rings (Empire Maker), a
$520,000 Keeneland September
yearling trained by Bob Baffert
for an ownership group that
includes some of WinStar's old
partners in Justify, SF
Bloodstock, Starlight Racing, and
Madaket. Eight Rings enters the
Gl Breeders' Cup Juvenile off a
terrifically impressive six-length
win in the Gl American Pharoah S. at Santa Anita, and a win in
the Breeders' Cup will have some important and strategic
implications for WinStar. For one, it would likely give a
WinStar-bred colt an Eclipse Award, but perhaps as importantly,
it could keep some of the other first-crop sires from grabbing
first-place money in a race that Constitution's best colt Tiz the
Law, who was bred by Twin Creeks, is expected to bypass.
Team Valor's promising Todd Pletcher-trained Constitution colt
Gouverneur Morris, in which WinStar purchased a leg before
the colt's winning nine-length debut at Saratoga on Sept. 2 that
earned him >Rising Star=-dom, is
also out of consideration for the
Breeders' Cup Juvenile after a
distant second-place finish in the
Gl Claiborne Breeders' Futurity
at Keeneland--run on the same
day as Tiz the Law's Champagne
triumph at Belmont.
"We've laid him up and are just
going to give him a bit of a
freshening, getting ready for his
3-year-old campaign," Walden
said. "Barry [Irwin of Team
Valor] did the same thing with
[future Gl Kentucky Derby
winner] Animal Kingdom. You know, he wanted to do it, and I
agreed with it. I liked his race in the Breeders' Futurity, but I felt
like, give him a little break now, he's had two runs, and get him
ready for the Classics was the way to go." Cont. p8

Tiz the Law is a New York-bred colt owned by Sackatoga Stableand trained by Barclay Tagg, the same connections that werebehind Distorted Humor's first-crop Kentucky Derby winner
Funny Cide, so there's some déjà vu surrounding the colt, especially as Constitution was produced from a daughter ofWinStar's elder statesman--who, incidentally, was trained byWalden. Tagg, a conservative horseman, didn't race Funny Cidein the Breeders' Cup Juvenile, but he's already been bolder withTiz the Law, sending him to the Champagne off a New York-bredmaiden special weight win, whereas Funny Cide was kept to twoNew York-bred black-type races following his winning debut.Tagg has said he will run Tiz the Law next in the Gll KentuckyJockey Club S. at Churchill instead of the Breeders' Cup, and awin there will allow his sire to pick up additional funds with amonth remaining to decide the freshman sire championship. "We might lose [the first-crop sire championship] because ofit," Walden said of the colt missing the Breeders' Cup, but hewas sanguine about the possibility. "I think, in the long run,we're going to have better 3-year-olds," he said, noting thatConstitution was unraced at two and was a spring 3-year-oldGrade l winner who came back at four to win another race atthe highest level. Constitution is represented by 15 winners to date versus 16 forthe Triple Crown winner, but with so many of AmericanPharoah's winners coming on turf and in Europe, Constitution sofar has outperformed his rival on the dirt, although he's got anup-and-coming turf colt, too. His other two stakes winners are>Rising Star= Amalfi Sunrise, winner of the Gll Sorrento S. at DelMar; and By Your Side, first in the Glll Sanford S. at Saratoga;but he's also represented by WinStar-bred Our Country, aSaratoga maiden winner on turf who came back at Belmont toplace third by 1 1/4 lengths in the Glll Pilgrim S. on turf, givingConstitution five stakes horses to date.
Breeding Patterns "Our Country got troubled trips in his last couple of starts, buthe's a very nice horse that we bred, and we're hopeful he'll runin the Breeders' Cup [Juvenile Turf]," Walden said, noting thatOur Country is out of a Tiznow mare like Tiz the Law. "It seemslike what's coming to the fore, at least initially, is that he's hadtwo good runners out of Tiznow mares and two from theUnbridled line." Amalfi Sunrise is from an Empire Maker mare and GouverneurMorris is out of a mare by Unbridled's Song. Both Tiznow, whose paternal grandsire Relaunch is a full-brother to Tapit's third dam Moon Glitter (both by In Realityfrom Foggy Note, by The Axe ll); and Unbridled, Tapit'sbroodmare sire, have had success with Tapit and some of hisfirst sons at stud, and breeders are duplicating these successfulpatterns. Tapit has 11 black-type winners with Relaunch within five
generations of a mare's pedigree, and one of them was his
exported Grade ll-winning son Concord Point, who was inbred to
the siblings Moon Glitter and Relaunch 4x3. In turn, Concord
Point's best runner was Grade l winner American Gal, who
brought another strain of Relaunch to her pedigree through her
dam, creating the inbreeding pattern 5x4x4 to Moon Glitter and
Relaunch. In the case of Tapit's Grade l winner and champion
Unique Bella, she has both Relaunch and Unbridled's Song--her
broodmare sire--in her pedigree, and Unbridled is duplicated
3x3 while Moon Glitter and Relaunch are 4x5.
Tapit has seven black-type winners with Unbridled within five
generations of a mare's pedigree, and this list includes Grade I
winner Sweet Loretta (3x3 Unbridled) and Grade ll winners West
Coast Belle (3x3 Unbridled) and Tacitus (3x4 Unbridled), in
addition to Unique Bella.
Walden also noted that Constitution's graded winner By Your
Side and the impressive Belmont debut winner and >Rising Star=
Aurelia Garland are from Dixie Union mares, and that's an
interesting development because Dixie Union's broodmare sire
Capote is by Seattle Slew, who's also in Tiznow's pedigree.
Though a Seattle Slew-line sire himself through A.P. Indy, Tapit
has enjoyed success with mares that have Seattle Slew or A.P.
Indy in their pedigrees, and altogether he has at least 17
black-type winners bred this way, including Grade l winners
Tapwrit (4x4 Seattle Slew), Sweet Loretta (3x4 A.P. Indy),
Frosted (4x4 Seattle Slew), and Constitution himself (4x5 Seattle
Slew). Sons of Tapit that have had success this way include
Tapizar, with Grade l winner and champion Monomoy Girl (5x4
Seattle Slew); Constitution, with Tiz the Law (5x6x5 Seattle
Slew); Trappe Shot; and Concord Point.

When Constitution went to stud, horses like Concord Point,
Trappe Shot, champion Hansen, Tapizar, and Flashback were
Tapit's first representatives in Kentucky, but there was a
perception at the time that the Tapits weren't clicking as they
should as stallions. Aside from the useful Tapizar, Concord Point,
Trappe Shot, and Hansen have since been exported and
Flashback was sent to Pennsylvania (and belatedly was
represented earlier this month by his first Grade l winner, British
Idiom), but this year Tapit has several other promising sons on
the first-crop list in addition to Constitution. They include Darby
Dan's Tapiture at No. 8 with 15 winners, Spendthrift's Race Day
at No. 12 with four black-type winners, and Lane's End's Tonalist
at No. 15 with nine winners and more expected of his runners
next year as a Gl Belmont S. winner.
Constitution is the cream of this group, and Walden attributes
some of the horse's success on the track and at stud to
broodmare sire Distorted Humor, who he believes has calmed
some of the hot blood that Tapit tends to pass on.
"I think he brings the great quality of Distorted Humor to the
Tapit line and that gives him a great mind. His horses just seem
to have the same grit that Distorted Humor possesses. Plus,
physically, he's just such a well-balanced horse, bigger than a lot
of Tapits, and very athletic, and he's got a great family
underneath him. That [combination] is really what's separating
him from the other Tapits that have gone to stud."
If the early perception becomes hardened reality in the next
few years, in Constitution Tapit may have that top-class sire that
seems to elude so many excellent stallions.

Lady Prancealot was venturing to Kentucky Friday for the first
time since finishing 14th in last year=s GI Breeders= Cup Juvenile
Fillies Turf, but the result was far different this time as she
swept past her rivals late to post an upset while sporting the
same star-spangled worn by a number of standout runners
during co-owner Mike Iavarone=s IEAH Stables days.
Well held by pilot Joe Bravo early to bide her time towards the
back half of the field, the bay was called on for a bit more and
began to advance out wide behind six panels in 1:13.57.
Maintaining her momentum as they swung for home, she
bobbled slightly as she switched her leads, but was all business
from there as she collared pacesetting favorite Blowout in the
final sixteenth to lead home a 1-2-3 finish for European-breds.
AThis filly really came over here nice,@ Bravo said. AShe was
sharp in the paddock, looking good. She broke, breathed,
relaxed--so comfortable. We turned for home [and] she knew
what she had to do. I was just lucky enough to be the passenger
today. She saw that horse in front and she went after her.
Johnny [Velazquez, aboard Blowout] had a nice horse in front of
us, but my filly was all over it.@
Kicking her career off in England, Lady Prancealot was second
in both the Del Mar Juvenile Fillies Turf S. and Surfer Girl S. last
season, and later broke through with a first Stateside win in a
Santa Anita optional claimer in February. Cont. p12

AShe worked very well here,@ said conditioner Richard Baltas.AHer weight was good, and she had another breeze that wasreally, really good. We=ve been lucky here. Pedigree Notes: Irish-bred Lady Prancealot=s brief career in England before herprominence in the U.S. gives her ties to three countries, just likeher sire. Sir Prancealot (Ire) entered stud in Ireland and was theEuropean champion freshman sire of 2016 before a deal wasstruck for him to shuttle to Australia in 2017. It was recentlyannounced he would reverse shuttle to Rancho San Miguel inCalifornia for the 2020 breeding season. The 9-year-old=s sevenstakes winners include American graded winners Beau Recall(Ire) and Madam Dancealot (Ire), as well as Lady Prancealot, who is the sole black-type winner for a daughter of the little-known Danzig stallion Haatef. The unraced mare Naqrah (Ire)has a half-sister to Lady Prancealot by Vadamos (Fr), who soldfor $40,452 at the recent Goffs Orby yearling sale. The mare=s2019 colt by Galileo Gold (GB) died earlier this year. Naqrah is ahalf to GSW-Fr & G1SP-UAE Baqah (Ire) (Bahhare), the dam ofGISW-US & MSW-Fr Almanaar (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}).
ROYAL CHARLOTTE MEETS UNDEFEATED
PAIR IN RAVEN RUN by Joe Bianca
Blemished just once in six starts, First Row Partners andParkland Thoroughbreds' Royal Charlotte (Cairo Prince) will takeon a pair of promising undefeated fillies, one of which comesfrom her own shedrow, in an 11-horse renewal of the GII LexusRaven Run S. Saturday at Keeneland. Opening her account Mar. 16 with a good-looking graduationat Gulfstream, the gray repeated in a muddy local allowanceApr. 19 and annexed the Hystericalady S. in her stakes bow May 27 at Monmouth. Stepped up into graded company in theGIII Victory Ride S. July 5 at Belmont, she scored a powerfulfour-length triumph, but was a no-show when finished awell-beaten sixth in the GI Longines Test S. Aug. 3 at Saratoga.
Back down in class slightly in the GII Prioress S. Aug. 31 at theSpa, she got back on track with a 1 1/2-length score in hertypical stalk-and-pounce style. The Chad Brown trainee breaksfrom the tricky rail post, and will be ridden by Tyler Gaffalionefor the first time. Chief among her competition is 'TDN Rising Star' barnmateIndian Pride (Proud Citizen). Bet like a good thing at 3-5 off astrong worktab Aug. 28 at Saratoga, the Brereton Joneshomebred did not disappoint, easily making the lead and takingthem all the way for an eight-length romp. The bay has drilledfive times since, including a pair of local half-mile breezes in :48flat Oct. 6 and 13. Also unbeaten is First Star (First Dude), wholooks to give her sire back-to-back winners of the Raven Run(Shamrock Rose, 2018). Belying odds of 27-1 to score in her 6 1/2-furlong unveiling July 20 at Del Mar, the chestnutsustained that late punch when stretching out to a mile to annexan optional claimer there Aug. 23. Two graded stakes winners turning back in distance to thisseven-furlong trip loom large as well. Three Chimneys Farm andFern Circle Stables' Restless Rider (Distorted Humor) capturedthe GI Darley Alcibiades S. at this oval last fall and missed by aneck in the local GI Central Bank Ashland S. Apr. 6. Last seenrunning 12th in the GI Kentucky Oaks, the gray returns with ahandful of sharp breezes, including an eye-popping half-milespin in :45 3/5 (1/99) Sept. 21 at Churchill. New Jersey-bredHorologist (Gemologist), upset victress of the GIII MonmouthOaks Aug. 17, was a solid third at 21-1 after chasing a torridpace in the GI Cotillion S., and makes her initial start for trainerRichard Baltas after being conditioned by John Mazza for herfirst 11 outings.

BREEDERS= CUP BULLETIN: OCT. 18 ! GI Breeders= Cup F/M Sprint contender Covfefe (Into
Mischief) covered six panels at Churchill Downs in 1:12.20. The
GI Test S. heroine worked in splits of :12.40, :24.60, :36.60, :48
and :59.80 under exercise rider Fernando Espinoza. She galloped
out seven furlongs in 1:25.40 and completed the work with a
one-mile time of 1:40.60, according to Churchill Downs clocker
John Nichols.
AShe=s a naturally fast filly and today=s work was very strong on
all accounts,@ trainer Brad Cox said. AShe galloped out very
strong around the turn and that was by design. She worked six
furlongs but started at the five-furlong pole. It was a very strong
move.@
! >TDN Rising Star= Dennis= Moment (Tiznow) prepped for the
GI Breeders= Cup Juvenile with a best-of-65 five panels in :58.60
beneath the Twin Spires. The GIII Iroquois S. romper went in
splits of :11.80, :23.40, 35 and :46.80 with a six-furlong gallop
out of 1:11.40 before concluding his work with a seven-furlong
time of 1:25.80.
AWe actually tried to slow him down today,@ trainer Dale
Romans said. AYou know, fast horses work fast. We had him with
the outrider (Greg Blasi) and Tammy didn=t break off until he
was right at the pole to try to make him slow down. We tried to
outsmart him but he seems to be smarter than us. He=s going to
work fast no matter what.@
Dennis= Moment is scheduled to fly to California Sunday at 10
a.m. and will have one breeze at Santa Anita prior to the World
Championships.
! Other Breeders= Cup workers at Churchill Downs Friday
include Andesite (The Factor) (five furlongs, 1:01.60, Juvenile
Turf); British Idiom (Flashback) (five furlongs, 1:01.60, Juvenile
Fillies); and Peace Achieved (Declaration of War) (five furlongs,
:59.60, Juvenile Turf). Whitmore (Pleasantly Perfect) blitzed a
half-mile in :46.80. His Breeders= Cup status remains in flux,
according to trainer Ron Moquett. GI Kentucky Oaks victress
Serengeti Empress (Alternation) was scheduled to work Friday,
but trainer Tom Amoss was diagnosed with appendicitis late
Thursday night and pushed her work back.
! GI Claiborne Breeders= Futurity S. winner Maxfield (Street
Sense) breezed a half-mile at Keeneland in :48.60 (16/62) Friday
morning with Paul Madden aboard. The undefeated BC Juvenile
contender posted fractions of :12.60, :25, :48.60 and out five
furlongs in 1:01.60 (video). Cont. p14

Breeders= Cup Bulletin cont.
AHe was good and relaxed,@ trainer Brendan Walsh said. AIt
was just a little maintenance move to stretch his legs. You could
tell he wanted to do somethingthe last couple of days.@
Walsh said the plan now is for Maxfield to work an easy
half-mile again next Friday, Oct. 25, and ship to Santa Anita early
the following morning. The conditioner will also bring Vitalogy
(GB) (No Nay Never) for the BC Juvenile Turf.
! Two-time GI Juddmonte Spinster S. victress Blue Prize (Arg)
(Pure Prize) prepped for the BC Distaff with a four-furlong move
in :49.40 (40/62) at Keeneland under Joe Bravo. She went in
splits of :25, :49.40 and out five furlongs in 1:02. (video)
! GI Spinaway S. heroine Perfect Alibi (Sky Mesa) worked five
panels in 1:02.60 (17/18) at Keeneland with a six-furlong gallop
out in 1:16 flat under Tyler Gaffalione. She is aiming for the BC
Juvenile Fillies.
AWe were happy with that,@ said Allen Hardy, who is
overseeing Mark Casse=s Keeneland string. AShe likes this track
and Mark said he would leave her here with me since I was with
her this spring when she got to Churchill Downs. She will
probably go over there (to Louisville) the next couple days and
then fly out to California on the 26th.@
! GI Natalma S. winner and BC Juvenile Fillies Turf runner
Abscond (Blame) went a half-mile in company in :48.80 (23/62),
galloping out five panels in 1:02.20 at Keeneland.
AWe are taking it day by day and today the track was in great
shape,@ conditioner Eddie Kenneally said. AShe went super. She
will probably have one more breeze next Friday and fly out on
the 26th.@
! GII Thoroughbred Club of America S. runner-up Dawn the
Destroyer (Speightstown) covered four furlongs in :48.20 (9/62)
at Keeneland with Roger Horgan aboard. The F/M Sprint runner
posted fractions of :24.20, :48.20and galloped out five furlongs
in 1:02.20 (video).
AShe did it the right way and had a nice, honest gallop-out,@
Horgan said of Dawn the Destroyer, who is scheduled to ship to
Santa Anita Oct. 29. AMaybe she will have one more work next
week. She is pretty fit. Kiaran [McLaughlin] asked me how she
was doing and I told him she was doing well. He said to go ahead
and work. If we have to, we can do somethingelse next Friday or
Saturday.@
! GI Breeders= Cup Classic-bound Vino Rosso (Curlin) was
among trainer Todd Pletcher=s Friday workers at Belmont. He
covered five eighths in 1:01.58 (2/12) over the training track.
"I thought he worked great," said Pletcher. "He finished up
strongly and galloped out very strong. Everything has gone
according to our plan and schedule. He seems to be thriving at
the moment so we're happy with him."
! There are still a couple weeks until the Breeders= Cup, but
GI Turf Sprint hopeful Pure Sensation (Zensational) turned in his
final serious work for the race Friday, stopping the clock in :48
flat (8/36) over the Belmont main track.
"He worked very well. I'm very happy," conditioner Christophe
Clement said of the 8-year-old. "It was a nice work, very willing,
very sound. He won't work between now and the race, by
design. I don't like to work him too close to the race."
ST PATRICK=S DAY TO STAND AT JOURNEYMAN St. Patrick=s Day (Pioneerof the Nile--Littleprincessemma, by
Yankee Gentleman), the 4-year-old full-brother to Triple Crown
winner American Pharoah, will enter stud at Journeyman Stud in
Ocala for 2020. He will stand as property of a syndicate that
includes Climax Stallions, Stonehedge Farm and Journeyman
Stud for a fee of $5,000 live foal.

St. Patrick=s Day cont.
A $2.1-million in utero purchase by Jane Lyon=s Summer Wind
Farm at the 2014 FTKNOV sale, the bay colt was privately
purchased by Coolmore and made two starts for Hall of Famer
Bob Baffert, breaking his maiden at second asking. Transferred
to Aidan O=Brien, he finished second in the G3 Renaissance S.
and retired with $69,300 in earnings.
AI trained three siblings, all Grade I performers,@ Baffert said.
ASt. Patrick=s Day undoubtedly showed that same type of talent
when he broke his maiden going :21 and :44 in his second start.@
In addition to American Pharoah, St. Patrick=s Day is a half-
sibling to Grade I winner Chasing Yesterday (Tapit), also trained
by Baffert.
AI can=t express how excited we are to have St. Patrick=s Day
here at Journeyman,@ Journeyman=s Brent Fernung said. AI want
to thank Sean Feld of Climax Stallions for approaching us with
this outstanding prospect. With his pedigree and talented, but
abbreviated race record, St. Patrick=s Day reminds me of Khozan
and I think, like Khozan, he=ll benefit from these tough Florida
mares. Having Stonehedge Farm and Journeyman among his
ownership group guarantees that St. Patrick=s Day will have a
great book of mares.@
LETTER TO THE EDITOR: ANN HANLEY Dear friends and especially Tom and Katie Ryan,
Thank you for your wonderful support for the Ann Hanley
Parkinson's Research Fund. Tom and Katie ran their socks off to
raise $125K for the gofundme page and every cent raised goes
to helping Dr. Craig van Horne and his team at UK continue with
their groundbreaking work to find a cure for this disease.
I always believed that a cure was a Apipe dream@ and to live
with an incurable disease is more than a death sentence...it=s a
living nightmare; that is, until the research at UK, a
one-of-a-kind surgical intervention, implanting nerve grafts into
target areas of the brain to kick start the repair mechanism
started to show positive results.
We are still a ways off from our goal to cure this disease, but
now there is hope and more--so much more. When we the
patients had nothing--no future to look forward to--plans gone
up in smoke, lives disrupted in a landscape of despair, we now
have hope and hope is everything. It keeps us steady and
moving forward.
Each of you who contributed to the cause has literally saved a
life. What an amazing achievement! Congratulations to you all
and a big heartfelt thank you.
Editor=s Note: Tom and Katie Ryan raised over $125,000 for
the Ann Hanley Parkin=s Research Fund at the University of
Kentucky by raising donations to support their run in the Fall
Foliage Half Marathon in Rhinebeck, NY. Further donations to
the cause may be sent to: Ann Hanley Parkinson=s Research,

Brad Cox unveils a half-brother to his champion pupil
Monomoy Girl (Tapizar) in MR. MONOMOY (Palace Malice) at
Keeneland Saturday. The bay was purchased for just $60,000 as
a KEENOV weanling, well before his talented sister rattled off
wins in the GI Central Bank Ashland S., GI Kentucky Oaks,
GI Acorn S., GI CCA Oaks and GI Breeders= Cup Distaff. Their dam
Drummette (Henny Hughes) summoned $1.85 million from
Bridlewood Farm in foal to Mastery at last term=s Fasig-Tipton
November Sale. TJCIS PPs

WICKLOW BRAVE HEADS GRAND NATIONAL
FIELDby Don Clippinger
Trainer Willie Mullins has referred to Wicklow Bloodstock
Ltd.'s Wicklow Brave (GB) (Beat Hollow {GB}) as "utterly
unique," and so he is.
The probable favorite in Saturday's GI Grand National at the
Far Hills Races in New Jersey, Ireland-based Wicklow Brave has
done it all. He has won a Group 1 race on the flat, he has won a
Group 1 hurdle race, and he now is conquering steeplechase
fences in a career that has banked more than $1.3-million for
Wicklow Bloodstock's Nick Peacock.
His career purses more than double those of his 11 opponents
in the 2 5/8-mile Grand National, including Sideways Stable's
Jury Duty (Ire) (Well Chosen {GB}), who is returning to America
for a shot at a second Grand National win after last year's 3 1/4-
length victory.
Wicklow Brave, now 10, heads an international contingent that
makes up half of the Grand National field, either based overseas
or making their first Stateside start for American owners and
their new trainers.
Heading the American contingent is Bruton Street-US's
Scorpiancer (Ire) (Scorpion {Ire}), the 2017 Eclipse Award winner
who is likely to be the third betting choice behind Wicklow
Brave and Jury Duty.
While Gordon Elliott-trained Jury Duty has struggled to find his
best form this year, Wicklow Brave has moved bravely into his
third major discipline with aplomb. He was always meant to race
over fences, but he had sufficient speed to go long, very long, on
TDN NORTH AMERICAN • PAGE 2 OF 11 • THETDN.COM SATURDAY • OCTOBER 19, 2019
the flat.
Mullins readily mixed some flat starts with the hurdle racing,
and Wicklow Brave won the G1 Palmerstown House Irish St.
Leger in 2016 after a third-place finish the previous year.
The following spring, he won the G1 Betdaq Punchestown Irish
Champion Hurdle before a fourth in the Irish St. Leger and
unplaced finishes in the G1 BMW Caulfield Cup and G1 Emirates
Melbourne Cup in Australia.
After a third in this year's Irish Champion Hurdle, Mullins sent
Wicklow Brave over steeplechase fences, and the result was a
victory in Galway's Guinness Open Gate Brewery Steeplechase.
Paul Townend, who has ridden him to three straight wins over
chase fences, will be in the saddle for the Grand National.
Jury Duty was put away after his Grand National victory last
October and, after an initial win, tried the really big fences at
Aintree in the G1 Grand National, in which he unseated jockey
Robbie Power. He was pulled up in the G1 Irish Grand National
and finished sixth in Gowran Park's PWC Champion Steeplechase
on Oct. 5. Also coming out of that race is Elliott-trained The
Storyteller (Ire) (Shantou).
American trainer Jack Fisher has all but locked up the 2019
titles by wins and earnings, with more than $1-million in the
bank, and he used Belmont Park's GI Lonesome Glory Handicap
as a prep race for Scorpiancer's march to the Grand National.
The 10-year-old won the GI Calvin Houghland Iroquois for the
second time in May and was given the summer off. He returned
in the Lonesome Glory and finished a tiring fifth, which should
tighten him a notch for the Grand National.
Also in the Grand National field is the Lonesome Glory winner,
Wendy Hendriks' Surprising Soul (Perfect Soul {Ire}), who
usually runs well and was a seriously overlooked 17.60-to-1 at
Belmont, even after finishing second, a length behind
Scorpiancer, in the Iroquois.
Racing Hall of Fame trainer Jonathan Sheppard never is to be
overlooked, and he is bringing back Hudson River Farms'
Iranistan (Einstein {Brz}) in the year's toughest spot. Iranistan
breezed through his first three jumps starts last year and was
favored in Saratoga Race Course's GI A. P. Smithwick Memorial,
in which he finished second, and the GI New York Turf Writers
Cup, in which he was third.

HIDDEN FACTS (f, 3, The Factor--Mystic City {MSW, $349,621},
by City Zip) may have taken seven tries to break her maiden, but
when she did in a front-running score going six panels over
Belmont=s lawn against her elders last out Sept. 22, she did it in
style with an 85 Beyer Speed Figure in a blazing 1:07.91. Off at
6-1 to make it two in a row, the bay came six wide off the turn
from mid-pack and wore down the leader while simultaneously
holding off closer Lead Guitar (Maclean=s Music). The margin of
victory was a scant head. Dam Mystic City has unraced juvenile
Silver Ratio (Liam=s Map), who brought $320,000 at last year=s

BAYERNESS (f, 2, Bayern--Weight No More, by Pure Prize), a
$350,000 EASMAY purchase after breezing an eighth in :10 1/5,
had been working well for this unveiling, including a :47 2/5 half-
mile (2/60) at Keeneland Oct. 12. In mid-pack, the chestnut hit
traffic coming off the turn and shifted to the center of the track.
She switched leads belatedly and drifted in greenly, but finished
well clear to win by 4 1/4 lengths over favored Jilted Bride
(Wicked Strong). Bayerness paid $9.40 as the 14th winner for
her freshman sire (by Offlee Wild). A half to a yearling colt by

THE PATH NOT TAKEN (GB) (f, 2, Sea The Stars {Ire}--Umniyah
{Ire}, by Shamardal) was favored at odds of 5-2 in this debut run
while facing 11 rivals. A bit headstrong rounding the first turn,
she settled into fifth while saving ground through a half mile in
:49.24. Irad Ortiz Jr. tipped her out to the five path at the top of
the stretch, and, after ducking in following a right-handed
reminder shortly thereafter, The Path Not Taken straightened
course and quickened impressively to reel in New Day Dawning
(Medaglia d=Oro) by 1 3/4 lengths. The winner=s dam had a colt

THIS DATE IN HISTORY...
October 20, 1923...Zev, winner of the 1923 Kentucky Derby,
defeated English hero Papyrus, winner of the 1923 Epsom
Derby, in a $100,000 match race at Belmont Park. The race,
called the International Special, marked the first time an English
champion was sent to the U.S. to race. Public interest was so
great the race was broadcast on the radio--a first.
October 21, 1961...Jockey Eddie Arcaro won the Jockey Club
Gold Cup for a record 10th time, riding the great Kelso to victory
at Belmont Park. Winner of the race in 1960 as well, Kelso went
on to take the race in >62, >63 and >64, setting the mark for most
consecutive victories in a stakes race.
October 22, 1945...El Lobo and Featherfoot became the first
Thoroughbreds to be transported by airplane. The two were
flown from Los Angeles to San Mateo, California, in the Flying
Tiger Line's twin-engine Budd transport plane, landing in the
parking area at Bay Meadows. El Lobo went on to take the
Burlingame H. at that track October 27.

ALL BRACED FORCHAMPIONS DAY
By Tom Frary
Ascot=s preparation for the latest QIPCO British Champions Day
has proven particularly difficult in light of the frequent deluges,
but on Saturday all that will fade into memory as the amassed
throng anticipate five division clashes from six furlongs to almost
two miles. Since this concept was born at Newmarket in 1997, it
is fair to say that the moniker has not always delivered what it
promises with it being so close to the hallowed G1 Prix de l=Arc
de Triomphe and staged so often on rain-eased autumn ground.
Moving to its current base in 2011, it was blessed with the
perfect launch as Frankel (GB) ran amok and his subsequent G1
QIPCO Champion S. swansong in 2012 bestowed even more
initial grandeur on the project. Subsequently the fixture has
proven more an end-of-season celebration than a consistent
coronation of the principals of the various distance categories,
but even so that is more than welcome for its many followers.
This year, the fact that there is only one of the leading seven
European turf performers on World Rankings in attendance is
due to either retirement or the star turns of the grass being
targeted elsewhere.

All Braced For Champions Day cont. from p1
It seems that in 2019 QIPCO Champions Day has lost out to
ParisLongchamp, but there are nonetheless reasons to be
cheerful looking ahead to what has quickly become a national
institution. The one top-10 horse in the Longines Best Racehorse
Rankings to race on Saturday belongs, unsurprisingly, to
Godolphin. In a year that has poured good fortune on the
operation at most turns, >TDN Rising Star= Benbatl (GB) (Dubawi
{Ire}) has surged back on to the main stage with an emphatic
five-length success under a penalty in Newmarket=s G2 Joel S.
Sept. 27. That demonstrative
performance matched his
previous effort all the way
back in October when
getting within two lengths of
Winx (Aus) (Street Cry {Ire})
in Moonee Valley=s
G1 Cox Plate.
Few if any of Saturday=s
protagonists throughout the
card could hope to get so
close to the Australian
legend, so the G1 Queen
Elizabeth II S. is at his mercy
on form at least. However,
as all are aware, these races
are never won on paper and
opponents of Saeed bin Suroor=s great hope would point to the
fact that he came to this venue as favourite for last year=s
G1 Queen Anne S. at the Royal meeting and trailed in 10th. One
major obstacle to the 5-year-old is the testing ground and it
could even lead to his withdrawal according to his trainer.
ABenbatl won nicely at Newmarket on his latest start and has
done well since. I have been pleased with his work but we know
that he doesn=t like heavy ground--he ran on it once at Haydock
and didn=t enjoy it at all,@ he said of one of only two Godolphin
runners on the card, both of whom represent the Bin Suroor
stable. AWe have declared him and will check the ground at
Ascot on Saturday.@
As October draws on and the nights draw in, soft ground
becomes almost an inevitability but brilliance on easy conditions
is still brilliance in its own right and anything can happen with it
riding like this. While Asoft@ is seen often even during the
summer in Europe, this kind of surface is for the specialists. One
who fits into that niche is The Revenant (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}),
who has been shown the way with genuine guile this term by
trainer Francis-Henri Graffard. Al Asayl=s 4-year-old, who has
turned a corner since a much-needed gelding operation at the
end of last year, keeps delivering in 2018 and arrives at the QEII
with confidence at an all-time high after wins in Saint-Cloud=s
Mar. 10 Listed Prix Altipan and Mar. 30 G3 Prix Edmond Blanc,
the May 30 G3 Badener Meile and the G2 Prix Daniel
Wildenstein at ParisLongchamp on Arc Saturday. Jockey Pierre-
Charles Boudot is just about the hottest property in his
profession at the moment and the sensation of Arc weekend has
the potential to enhance his reputation here also.
Graffard, whose Channel (Ire) (Nathaniel {Ire}) and Watch Me
(Fr) (Olympic Glory {Ire}) have provided Group 1 glory for the
stable this season, is hopeful The Revenant can hold his own.
AEverything is good and I am very
happy with the horse=s condition,@
he said. AWe know the ground will
not be a problem for him and we are
looking forward to the race. It is a
step up, but we don=t have much
option and we are very happy to be
running in this race.@
Boudot will hope to get the ball
rolling in the first race with Lael
Stable=s dual G1 Prix de la Foret
heroine One Master (GB) (Fastnet
Rock {Aus}) in the G1 QIPCO British
Champions Sprint S., whose three
outings in October throughout her
career have yielded three wins.
Reverting to six furlongs for the first
time since the G3 Ballyogan S. last June, the William Haggas-
trained mare has underfoot conditions to help her keep tabs on
the fast Group 1 sprint winners Advertise (GB) (Showcasing
{GB}) and Hello Youmzain (Fr) (Kodiac {GB}) and the Irish
fairytale prospect Make a Challenge (Ire) (Invincible Spirit {Ire}).
AI think she=ll enjoy the ground and she seems very well since
winning the Foret,@ Haggas said of One Master. AWe=re coming
back in trip, but if they go hard and fade hopefully she=ll be
finishing strongly. The 13-day gap between her races is not ideal,
but she=s had only four runs and likes soft ground.@
Of all the underdogs on the card, Make a Challenge would
have been the most unlikely less than a month ago as he ran
respectably but was beaten in The Curragh=s ABold Lad@ H. but
he has subsequently jumped up the ratings with two dynamic
wins to force the hand of connections. The latest of those came
by 4 1/2 lengths in Sunday=s Listed Waterford Testimonial S. also
at The Curragh and he will again be partnered by Joe Doyle who
had retired from the saddle in the summer.

HE HAS THE POTENTIAL TO PUT IT UP
TO STRADIVARIUS, ESPECIALLY WITH
THE GROUND LOOKING LIKE IT’S GOING
TO BE VERY SOFT.Donnacha O’Brien on Kew Gardens
Champions Day cont.
AI=m excited and nervous. We=ll see how we go,@ trainer Denis
Hogan said of the remarkably progressive 4-year-old, whose
handicap mark has risen from 66 to 111 this season. AIt=s a big
ask and a step up in class, but he deserves to be there. I=m
happy with the ground, the draw and the jockey and I=m very
happy with the horse.@
Commercial concerns aside, the clash between Stradivarius
(Ire) (Sea the Stars {Ire}) and Kew Gardens (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) in
the G2 QIPCO British Champions Long Distance Cup is the race
of the day with Bjorn Nielsen=s all-conquering chestnut having to
cope with unfavourable ground again. It failed to hinder his
progress at the Royal meeting and at Goodwood, but this time
he faces a rival whose every step in his career so far seems to
have led to this moment. Successful in last year=s G1 St Leger
and G1 Grand Prix de Paris, Kew Gardens was on course for a
meeting with the Gosden staying supremo in the G1 Gold Cup
before injury intervened and his staying power remains
unknown. His effort when second after a lengthy lay-off in the
G1 Irish St Leger at The Curragh Sept. 15 was highly creditable
and jockey Donnacha O=Brien is exuding confidence.
AStradivarius has shown he=s the dominant stayer in Europe,
but the only one that could possibly give him something to think
about would be Kew Gardens, I suppose,@ he said. AHe has very
high-class form over a mile and a half and a mile and six furlongs
and he ran a very good race in the Irish Leger off a very slow
pace. He has the potential to put it up to Stradivarius, especially
with the ground looking like it=s going to be very soft. Hopefully
he=s got a big chance, because he could even improve for his run
at The Curragh, while Stradivarius has had a hard summer.
Those staying races take it out of you, even though he=s been
winning them easy.@

Champions Day cont.
Kew Gardens is one of six representatives of Galileo, who since
this meeting was shifted to Ascot and re-launched can boast
seven winners of the feature races. That is five clear of his son
Frankel (GB) and also Dubawi (Ire) and Pivotal (GB), and there
are some big prices among his 2019 contingent which include his
fast-improving 3-year-old daughter Delphinia (Ire) in the
G1 QIPCO British Champions Fillies & Mares S. His most likely
chance rests with Magical (Ire) in the G1 QIPCO Champion S.,
but whereas Galileo has the edge in sire terms John Gosden and
Frankie Dettori are the occasion=s dominant pairing and combine
in the main event with Coronet (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}). Magical and
Coronet met here 12 months ago, when the former prevailed by
a length in the Fillies & Mares but Denford Stud=s homebred
endured an exaggerated wide trip giving her year-younger rival
six pounds due to weight-for-age on that occasion.
While the Champion is a far-from-vintage affair, the QEII at
least has the G1 English and Irish 2000 Guineas winners taking
on Benbatl and The Revenant, as well as the last two winners of
the G1 Queen Anne S. and a G1 Falmouth S. scorer in Veracious
(GB) (Frankel {GB}). Even without Romanised (Ire) (Holy Roman
Emperor {Ire}), Circus Maximus (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) and Too Darn
Hot (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}), this is teed up for a potential miling
champion to emerge in a division that has remained open all
year. Magna Grecia (Ire) (Invincible Spirit {Ire}) was last seen
finishing fifth in the May 25 Irish 2000 Guineas, having asserted
his superiority over King of Change (GB) (Farhh {GB}) in the
Newmarket Classic three weeks earlier but Donnacha O=Brien
was sounding confident as he looked ahead to the challenge.

AI wouldn=t mind a bit of juice in the ground for Magna Grecia,@
he commented. AObviously we don=t know how bad it=s going to
be yet. By the sounds of it, it=s going to be pretty bad and ideally
you wouldn=t want it to be heavy for any top-class horse. He=ll
probably get through it better than some, though. I wouldn=t be
as worried about it for him as some of the others.@
Tony Wechsler and Ann Plummer=s Irish Guineas hero Phoenix
of Spain (Ire) (Lope de Vega {Ire}) is now winless in three
subsequent starts, but James Doyle said he thinks this change to
the straight track could reignite his fire. AWe=re looking for him
to bounce back to his Irish Guineas form and he hasn=t been
beaten that far since,@ he said. AHe has a big, long stride and I
definitely see Ascot as a track he will like. He has performed well
with cut underfoot and this is one of the most open races of the
day.@
Doyle said he was happy that more rain arrived during the
early hours of Friday morning for Sheikh Ahmed bin Rashid Al
Maktoum=s Addeybb (Ire) (Pivotal {GB}) as he returns to the
meeting at which he was a disappointing 12th of 13 in the QEII
last year. Ideally, the Champion S. gamble would want it as
heavy as it was when beating Pondus (GB) (Sea the Moon {Ger})
in the G3 Rose of Lancaster S. at Haydock last time Aug. 10. His
rider underlined that on Friday. AHe loves it borderline
unraceable,@ he said. AFor him, it=s a shame they switched to the
inner track as he would have preferred it and it would have
hindered the others. I=m sure it=s still going to be testing and it=s
starting to look like a mile and a quarter is the right trip for him.
It=s a funny one, because if you had told me at the start of the
season that he would be almost favourite for the Champion S. it
would have been hard to believe, but with ground conditions as
they are it brings him right into the mix. He=s very
straightforward and is tactically versatile, which is a big bonus.@
Oisin Murphy, who will be crowned champion jockey, is back
on Deirdre (Jpn), whose sire Harbinger (GB) put up one of the
all-time great Ascot performances in the 2010 King George, in
the Champion. Her defeat of the re-opposing Mehdaayih (GB)
(Frankel {GB}) in the G1 Nassau S. at Goodwood Aug. 1 and
unlucky fourth in the Sept. 14 G1 Irish Champions S. at
Leopardstown came on a livelier surface and Murphy is aware of
the challenge. AShe=ll want the ground as firm as possible to
show her best running,@ he commented. AShe couldn=t be in
better form and if she does go on the ground she will definitely
have a winning chance. It=s a question mark for sure, but the
team have done a phenomenal job on her.@

Interestingly, Juddmonte are represented by only two runners
in the pattern races in Imaging (GB) (Oasis Dream {GB}) and Sun
Maiden (GB) (Frankel {GB}) and both are longshots in the QEII
and Fillies & Mares respectively. >TDN Rising Star= Sun Maiden is
going over almost 12 furlongs on slow ground for the first time
and that combination could bring about improvement in the
half-sister to Midday (GB) (Oasis Dream {GB}) who is one of five
progeny by Frankel to race here. Along with lively outsiders
Dream of Dreams (Ire) (Dream Ahead) in the Sprint, Mekong
(GB) (Frankel {GB}) in the Long Distance Cup, >TDN Rising Star=
Veracious in the QEII and Regal Reality (GB) (Intello {Ger}) in the
Champion she bids to provide Sir Michael Stoute with a first
winner since the fixture moved here in 2011.
One veteran trainer of distinction who does boast an enviable
strike-rate at the fixture is Dermot Weld, whose representatives
are the aforementioned Imaging and Tarnawa (Ire) (Shamardal)
who bid to provide him with a fifth Champions Day success. His
Highness The Aga Khan=s Tarnawa took the G3 Give Thanks S. at
Cork Aug. 17 and G2 Blandford S. at The Curragh Sept. 15 and
rates a threat to all in the Fillies & Mares. Weld will have one
eye on Leopardstown on Saturday, with the same owner-
breeder=s Sept. 29 Curragh debut scorer Katiba (Ire)
(Footstepsinthesand {GB}) tackling the G3 Killavullan S.
Goffs Releases Breeding Stock Sale Catalogue cont. from p1
The expected highlights of the catalogue include the 7-year-old
Height of Elegance (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) (lot 861), a three-quarter-
sister to champion 2-year-old filly Listen (Ire) and G1 Moyglare
Stud S. winner Sequoyah (Ire), both daughters of Sadler=s Wells,
in foal to second-season sire Caravaggio; Duffay (Ire) (Dubawi
{Ire}), a Godolphin-consigned 6-year-old daughter of G1 Fillies=
Mile S. winner White Moonstone (Dynaformer) carrying her
third foal, by Invincible Spirit (Ire) (lot 924); Steel Princess (Ire)
(Danehill) (lot 971), the dam of Grade I winner Sarah Lynx (Ire),
Group 3 winner Sugar Boy (Ire) and listed winner Steel Prince
(Ire) in foal to No Nay Never (Ire); Snowflakes (Ire) (Galileo {Ire})
(lot 997), a winning full-sister to four-time Group 1 winner
Winter (Ire) in foal to U S Navy Flag; Could It Be Love (Ire) (War
Front) (lot 1000), a winning and Classic-placed half-sister to
Uncle Mo in foal to Australia (GB); and dual Group 3 winner and
Group 1-placed Actress (Ire) (Declaration of War) (lot 1001) in
foal to No Nay Never.
AMore Group 1 success in 2019 was the pinnacle of another
year where we saw progeny of November mares win
consistently around the world,@ said Goffs Group Chief Executive
Henry Beeby. AGoffs November Breeding Stock is a sale with
huge international appeal and we believe this year=s catalogue is
packed with potential. We have reduced the numbers slightly
this year, with quality over quantity very much in mind, to
produce a catalogue of real strength and depth. It will take place
immediately after our market-leading November Foal Sale Part 1
and will be followed by Part 2 of the foals, resulting in a five-day
November Sale that serious buyers simply cannot afford to
miss.@
THUNDER ROLLS OUT BOOK THREE FINALEBy Emma Berry
NEWMARKET, UK--One visitor to Tattersalls on Friday
observed that it was like being in a popular holiday resort out of
season. Certainly the atmosphere was less charged than that
sustained during the buzz of Books 1 and 2, but a fresh crowd
had arrived in Newmarket for the second half of the week and
there was still plenty of activity around the sales ground, albeit
at a more modified level. Cont. p7

Lot 1739, Night of Thunder colt | Tattersalls
John Hassett | Tattersalls
Tattersalls October--Friday cont.
Among the diehards who had weathered the full fortnight--
and that required full waterproofs on many days, as the rash of
race abandonments across England and a sloppy Champions Day
will attest to--there were of course still most of the main
breeze-up crew present along with a decent sprinkling of
trainers.
Of the former, Johnny Hassett provided the day's financial
highlight, when having the final wave of the catalogue at
75,000gns for lot 1739. Thunder rumbled loudly across the
Newmarket sky during the afternoon, but Night Of Thunder (Ire)
has been rumbling away all season long to amass an impressive
array of first-crop winners, currently heading the European
freshman list with 25 chalked up. Members of his next batch
have been unsurprisingly popular throughout the yearling sale
season and it was one of these which led the final session of
Book 3.
Ai15,000 pinhook at Fairyhouse by County Antrim-based
Beechvale Stud, the son of the unraced Bahriya (Ire) (Dalakhani
{Ire}) brought a smile to the face of Tara Armstrong, who has
nurtured him through the last 10 months with her father Trevor
and brother Chris and led him through the ring.
"Chris picked him out but he couldn't be here today as he
works in the office at Ballydoyle--hopefully he was watching,"
said Trevor Armstrong. "He was a nice, scopey foal and he has
done well. Dalakhani is a top broodmare sire and Night Of
Thunder has been on fire, too."
Despite the popularity of the sire, it was the colt's damsire
who was of particular appeal to Hassett, who said, "I've bought
two yearlings out of Dalakhani mares before. One went from
30,000gns to 200,000gns and the other went from 29,000gns to
160,000gns, so Dalakhani mares were my own little niche, until
Pinatubo came along."
Bahriya may have no racing record of which to boast, and only
one foal before this in her fledgling broodmare career but she
has origins of some note in the Aga Khan Studs. Her dam
Behkiyra (Ire) (Entrepreneur {GB}) was a listed winner in Ireland
and is herself out of the champion racemare Behera (Ire) (Mill
Reef).
Hassett added of his new colt, "He's by the right sire, too, and I
just think he looks like a quick horse. He'll go to whichever sale
fits in best with his preparation. I don't make those calls until
just before the catalogues come out. I like to see how they're
going first. It's been very difficult buying this week; the market is
very strong, which is great. It's a solid and very discerning
market."
If you're looking for Joe Foley at Tattersalls, the chances are
you'll find him in the chute, ringside, rarely taking his eye off the
proceedings just beyond the rope. His diligent singularity has led
him to unearth plenty of well-bought individuals for his principal
patron Steve Parkin, and the duo will be hoping that another
successful bearer of the all-grey Clipper Logistics silks next
season will be lot 1693, the sole filly by Ajaya (GB) in Book 3.
Compromised by poor fertility, the 2015 Gimcrack S. winner
served only one season at Rathbarry Stud, which consigned the
filly, before time had to be called on his second career. He has
around 60 yearlings on the ground to give him a chance that his
name might be remembered a while yet.
After buying the filly for 55,000gns, Foley said, "I like the idea
of Ajaya. He was a very fast horse and I was there the day he
won the Gimcrack. We were an underbidder on the
[session-topping] filly by Territories yesterday and they are both
sons of Invincible Spirit, who has had such a good year as a sire
of sires.

"We are big fans of Giant's Causeway mares, and this filly is
from a fast family and has been very well prepared, as always,
by Rathbarry. Both myself and Federico Barberini liked her."
Paul Cashman bred the filly at Rathbarry Stud from
Thousandfold, whose first foal Kazan (Shanghai Bobby) was
runner-up in last year's GII Del Mar Derby, having been sold at
October Book 2 as a yearling for 240,000gns.
"We bought the mare in-foal to Shanghai Bobby and she has
done really well for us," said Cashman. "She had a filly foal by
Acclamation this spring and is in-foal to James Garfield. Ajaya's
stock have been pleasing and this filly is a lovely model. It is such
a shame he had issues with his fertility."
Trimmed by about 50 lots this year, figures for Book 3 retained
almost identical levels to those posted 12 months ago. The
median was unmoved at 10,000gns, as was the 80% clearance
rate. There was an upward flicker of difference in the average
price of 16,147gns, while the 434 yearlings sold (38 fewer than
last year) combined to bring a final count of 7,007,900gns (-8%).
After withdrawals, around 100 yearlings will be offered on
Saturday morning by way of a truncated Book 4. They include lot
2059, The Glanvilles Stud's Sixties Icon (GB) half-sister to last
weekend's G3 Oh So Sharp S. third Separate (GB) (Cable Bay
{Ire}).
The timing of this particular section of the sale will continue to
be debated but in a packed autumn sales schedule in Europe,
and with the October Sale being hedged in by major race
meetings at Newmarket and Ascot, room for manoeuvre is
scant. Furthermore, the demand for yearling sale places from
breeders remains way beyond the current provision.
This low-key session will bring the curtain down on the October
Sale, with the action switching to Deauville next week for
Arqana's four-day October Sale, which begins on Tuesday.
UNI'S BC BID LATEST VINDICATION FOR
EURO VENTURE by Chris McGrath
Their subsequent dealings make it seem very apt that Nicolasde Watrigant and Bradley Weisbord first sealed their friendshipthrough a migrant as effective as Mshawish (Medaglia d'Oro). Both men shared a patron, either side of the Atlantic, in AlShaqab--and when that operation switched Mshawish to ToddPletcher from Mikel Dezangles, for whom he had finished fourthin the G1 Prix du Jockey Club, de Watrigant naturally wanted tostay on top of his progress. After all, he had found Mshawish fori170,000 at the Arqana breeze-ups (as a celebrated $10,000Keeneland pinhook by Johnny Collins). Mshawish proceeded towin Grade Is on both turf and dirt and, meanwhile discovering astrong personal affinity, de Watrigant and Weisbord began toask each other whether they might replicate that success forother clients. Uni=s BC Bid cont.
The results have been pretty spectacular, with Uni (GB) (More
Than Ready) heading to the GI Breeders' Cup Mile after her
recent success in the GI First Lady S. at Keeneland--a race won
last year, moreover, by another European export recommended
by de Watrigant, A Raving Beauty (Ger) (Mastercraftsman {Ire}).
These two elite scorers are among no fewer than seven to have
been at least graded-stakes-placed from just 17 horses acquired
between the founder of Mandore International and Weisbord's
BSW Bloodstock since 2016. Another four have either won or
placed at stakes level.
All but one of the 17 have been fillies. The solitary exception is
Rockemperor (Ire) (Holy Roman Emperor {Ire}), who was third in
the GI Belmont Derby this summer on his first start for Chad
Brown, as another to have run very well in the Prix du Jockey
Club for his previous connections.
Since Simone Brogi had originally given just i12,000 for
Rockemperor at the Arqana breeze-ups, a good profit was
plainly banked. But while prices have evidently been going up,
even in the relatively short span of their partnership, Weisbord
and de Watrigant have been getting top value, too. A Raving
Beauty, for instance, was acquired for i230,000 in a private
sale after failing to meet her reserve at the Arqana December
Sale in 2017--and was sold on to Japan, within the year, for $2-
million at the Fasig-Tipton November Sale, straight after her
close third in the Breeders' Cup Filly & Mare Turf.
"We stole that filly," says de Watrigant with a smile. "She was
second in a Group 1 [Premio Lydia Tesio] a few weeks previous
to the sale, but she was selling as a broodmare prospect so
maybe people thought she wasn't sound. Anyway I called Brad
right away and said this was the filly, for the first time ever I said
we had to keep shares. I went down [to the Monceaux
consignment] after she was unsold at i220,000, and 10 minutes
after we did the deal they were taking calls and had to say:
'Sorry, Nicolas has already bought her.'"
A Raving Beauty resurfaced to win a Grade III at Belmont the
following May and then won the GI Just A Game S. at Belmont.
"It was the same day Justify won the Triple Crown," recalls de
Watrigant. "Apart from my wedding and my kids' births, that
was the best day of my life."
"This was a really special horse," agrees Weisbord. "Because
number one, I'd never heard Nic say we have to keep a share in
one, so we own 25% together; and number two, he was able to
come over, experience Justify, and walk A Raving Beauty into
the winner's circle. For him to do that, not only as agent but as
part-owner, it saw the whole program come together."
Whereas A Raving Beauty arrived with plenty of miles on the
clock, Uni had already been scouted--in her case at a much
earlier stage, having just won her first stake as a 3-year-old.
Significantly, while hardly the most imposing of fillies, Uni
made such an immediate impression on Chad Brown that he
departed from his standard practice.
"Chad usually takes his time off the plane, like he did with A
Raving Beauty, he's a master at that," Weisbord says. "But when
Uni breezed first time on the turf at Belmont, with an older filly,
he turned and said: 'We got a new shooter in the division.' Like
off one breeze, after 10 days, he could see her turn of foot. So
we ran her in the Belmont Oaks, and she was third in a race of
superstars, to New Money Honey (Medaglia d'Oro) and
Sistercharlie (Ire) (Myboycharlie {Ire}). And since we cut her
back to a mile, she's six-for-six against fillies."
Both Uni's Grade I wins--in the Matriarch S. last winter and in
the First Lady--showcased how she likes to chase down a strong
pace, and that is one of the obvious pivots for certain European
horses to thrive in the U.S. environment.
"Some of them are dying for pace in a race," Weisbord says.
"But the only thing I told Nic was that they need to be able to go
a mile plus; that, and firm ground. There's no question the
Europeans have the best sire power [for turf], the best
pedigrees to produce turn of foot. And that's what wins these
races."
In his recruitment de Watrigant is able to call upon contacts
tracing back to his apprenticeship, as assistant to Luca Cumani
and Jean-Claude Rouget.
"I know the trainers, I know the way they work," he says.
"When you buy a horse in training, you need to have
information from the stable; from the riders, too. Also some of
the horses we've bought came from the south of France, where
they race more like in America, with sharp bends; it's not like
they've been running in a straight line at Newmarket." Cont. p10

Uni cont.
Unfortunately Uni's original supervisors in Europe neglected to
nominate her for the Breeders' Cup, and her transatlantic
blossoming means that a hefty supplementary fee will be
necessary for her to line up at Santa Anita. But while her current
spree of success was interrupted by her only encounter with
American males, when third (actually to another filly) in the
GI Fourstardave H., she hit traffic and Weisbord believes that
the sky remains the limit.
"She's an exceptional talent, going a mile," he says. "She got
very unlucky at Saratoga, and if she gets pace and a trip, she'll
be dangerous at the Breeders' Cup. I haven't spoken to the
partners yet, but I think it would be a dream to come over and
target the Queen Anne at Royal Ascot next year."
That path was pioneered, of course, by Tepin (Bernstein)--who
was subsequently sold through Elite Sales, operated by
Weisbord with partner Liz Crow, for $8-million. "If you can win
that race, it can take your value to the stratosphere," Weisbord
attests. "I was there when Tepin won, and we believe this filly is
that sort of talent. She's running the same sort of numbers on
my figures. And she likes any sort of surface, she's won on
yielding, so it wouldn't bother her even if you were to catch a
soft-ground year. I know she's five, turning six, but she's never
run poorly in her life so there's no reason to think we're out of
gas yet. The owners of Uni are sportsmen. Yes, it's very tough
but we know it can be done."
"And that's why it's great to work for them," de Watrigant
adds. "Because those guys like to give their horses a chance--
and a challenge."
Uni's grand-dam is a half-sister to Rafha (GB), so the Invincible
Spirit (Ire) connection might ultimately see her returned to the
European marketplace. But this business is all about a
willingness to adapt. Increasing purses on turf in the U.S., for
instance, may yet bring more colts into the BSW/Mandore
program.
"My clients' stable consists 80-20 of fillies to colts," Weisbord
says. "That's because our goal is to keep them in the game, as
racing guys not breeding guys, and if you win a stake with a filly,
that goes a long way in terms of residual value. We need to
trade them into the market like we did A Raving Beauty. With
colts, Hong Kong is a popular market and it's hard to get people
to pay $400,000-$700,000 if a listed or Grade III won't get you
out. But after Rockemperor I think, going forward, we'll be
looking for colts for this new series in New York."
Unmistakably, business between Weisbord and de Watrigant is
also a great pleasure. "Our families have become close, and it's
so much fun to work with a contemporary, to travel the world
together," Weisbord says.
"I'm a believer in knowing the market. Nic has the contacts,
and he's so easy to deal with. And it's so important to know
you're dealing with an honest counterpart. That's crucial for me.
I don't have to check the channels. I trust what he says as bible."
DR DELIVERS MERCURY REMEDY
Friday=s G3 Al Basti Equiworld Mercury S. was shorn of British
raider and likely favourite El Astronaute (Ire) (Approve {Ire}),
who broke through the stalls during the loading process, and it
was left to Russell Jones=s juvenile Dr Simpson (Fr) (Dandy Man
{Ire}) to fill the void and lead home a trifecta of runners from
across the Irish Sea in the one-turn dash at Dundalk. The bay
had hit the board in two black-type events since plundering a
July 13 novice heat by seven lengths at Chester and went
postward for this first overseas adventure returning off a fourth
in the Sept. 20 Listed Harry Rosebery S. at Ayr. Sharing
pacesetting duties with Hit the Bid (GB) (Exceed and Excel {Aus})
for the most part, the 16-1 chance subdued that rival when
ridden into an outright lead approaching the final furlong and
was driven out to hold the incoming Dream Shot (Ire) (Dream
Ahead) and Corinthia Knight (Ire) (Society Rock {Ire}) by 3/4-of-
a-length and a head, respectively, for a career high.
AShe hit the gates well, travelled good and strong all the way
and picked up nice and smart,@ said winning rider Rory Cleary.
A[Trainer] Tom [Dascombe] is not here, but he rang me before
the race and told me she was straightforward and to keep it
simple. Hopefully, it=ll be the first of many rides for him. It=s a
chunky weight allowance and a great opportunity [for
2-year-olds against their elders]. She shows loads of pace and
it=s hard to peg them back with just 116 pounds on their back.

VELOX A WARM FAVOURITE IN KIKUKA SHOby Alan Carasso
The yellow-and-black silks of Kaneko Makoto Holdings Co.
were carried to victory by the late, great Deep Impact (Jpn) in
the 2005 G1 Kikuka Sho (Japanese St Leger) and the owner will
have every chance to double his tally in the staying feature in
the form of Velox (Jpn) (Just a Way {Jpn}) Sunday afternoon at
Kyoto Racecourse.
Out of the top three just once in his eight career trips to the
post to date, Velox--a -48 million ($421,440) purchase as a JRHA
Select Sale yearling--landed a pair of early-season listed races
over the metric mile and a quarter and was a head second to the
G1 Tenno Sho (Autumn)-bound Saturnalia (Jpn) (Lord Kanaloa
{Jpn}) in the G1 Satsuki Sho (Japanese 2000 Guineas) in April.
Third in the G1 Tokyo Yushun (Japanese Derby) in his first try at
12 furlongs, the bay colt was freshened and resumed with a
strong runner-up effort to Saturnalia in the G2 Kobe Shimbun
Hai (2400m) Sept. 22. Produced by a mare by the staying
influence Monsun (Ger), Sunday=s trip should pose no obstacle.
AHe always shows a lot of strength in his races and gives it the
very best,@ said trainer Mitsumasa Nakauchida. AWhile it=ll be his
first time over 3000 meters (1 7/8 miles), and the Kyoto 3000
meters is a bit unique, again he should run to his best.@
Satono Lux (Jpn) (Deep Impact {Jpn}) topped the
aforementioned JRHA Select Sale on a bid of -270 million
($2,370,600) and was a listed winner over 11 furlongs back in
February before finishing well down the field in the Guineas and
the Derby. The son of G1 Fillies= Mile winner Listen (Ire) (Sadler=s
Wells) made a favorable impression on his return to action,
closing from midfield to fill second spot in the Sept. 16 G2 Asahi
Hai St Lite Kinen (2200m), a neck better than the re-opposing
Zadar (Jpn) (Tosen Ra {Jpn}).
World Premiere (Jpn) (Deep Impact {Jpn}) will try to follow in
his father=s hoofprints and the -240 million ($2,335,200) JRHA
Select Weanling has every right to move forward off a third in
the Kobe Shimbun Hai. Prior to that, he defeated Unicorn Lion
(Ire) (No Nay Never) at Kyoto in February and was runner-up to
Velox in the Listed Wakaba S. the following month.
Red Genial (Jpn) (King Kamehameha {Jpn}) downed
subsequent Derby hero Roger Barows (Jpn) (Deep Impact {Jpn})
by a neck in the G2 Kyoto Shimbun Hai in early May before
finishing eighth in the Derby itself. The dark bay was scarcely
embarrassed when returning from a four-month rest in the
Kobe Shimbun Hai, finishing fourth after racing prominent
throughout.

Racing New South Wales Chief Executive Peter V=landys | Getty
INDUSTRY GROUPS CALLFOR PROSECUTIONS
By Paul Vettise
Major thoroughbred bodies have reacted with outrage and
calls for action in the wake of an ABC report, which aired graphic
footage of the fate of ex-racehorses at a Queensland
slaughterhouse.
Racing New South Wales Chief Executive Peter V'landys,
Racing Victoria Chief Executive Giles Thompson, Thoroughbred
Breeders= Chief Executive Tom Reilly, Racing Australia and Inglis
were all sickened by the vision and want the perpetrators held
to account.
V=landys also remained adamant New South Wales had made
major inroads to protect the welfare of retired racehorses,
including implementing a rule that tracks horses throughout
their racing careers and retirements and bans sending horses to
slaughter.
He has called on the Queensland Government and the
Department of Primary Industries to take action.
"The vision was sickening and disturbing, what was going on in
abattoirs in Queensland, and I hope the perpetrators are
brought into account," V'landys said on 2GB's Alan Jones
Breakfast Show.
Elements of the programme were unfair and V=landys said it
tarnished an entire industry because of the actions of a few.
He also revealed Racing NSW had received hate mail in
response to the programme.
"The hate mail we have been receiving telling us to all get
cancer and die is appalling," V'landys said. "There are no people
that look after their animals better than the thoroughbred
people.
"They treat them like family and to take one or two people
that do the wrong thing and portray a whole industry like that is
completely unfair and unjust."
Racing NSW was given a list of names of 14 horses by the ABC
and V'landys said they identified 12 of them were last domiciled
in other states or had been sold as pleasure horses, thus placing
them outside the jurisdiction of his organisation.
He said 10,000 NSW racehorses had been retired in the past
three years and the majority successfully re-homed.
Since 2016, Racing NSW has set aside one per cent of all
prizemoney, equating to about $2.5 million, to a thoroughbred
welfare fund and has purchased over 2500 acres of NSW
property for its re-homing programme.
Thompson said he was greatly distressed by the inhumane
treatment of the horses at the abattoir.
AAbattoirs and knackeries are regulated by State Governments
and we expect those authorities to ensure animal welfare
standards are maintained and compliance is strictly enforced.
We expect anyone breaching those laws to be prosecuted.
AEquine welfare is a non-negotiable for the Australian racing
industry. The goal of ensuring a home for every healthy
thoroughbred as it exits the racing industry must remain a
priority for all.
AThrough our Off The Track programme we are working to
create a demand for the thoroughbred and promoting a
network of 50 retrainers to support the rehoming efforts of
owners and trainers.
AWhile the racing industry is able to enforce strict rules and
demand the highest standards of treatment for horses during
their racing career, once a horse is retired from racing it leaves
our jurisdiction and the scope of the national rules of racing.
AThis is of course a matter of national concern and not just
restricted to thoroughbreds. We have been calling for a better
system to track the movement of horses once they have left the
racing industry and are urging the Federal Government=s Senate
Standing Committee to expedite its deliberations and pave the
way for the urgent introduction of a National Horse Traceability
Register.

WHILE THERE IS GOOD WORK BEING
DONE TO REHOME HORSES, WE HAVE
TO LOOK AT HOW PARTICIPANTS AND
REGULATORS CAN AND
MUST DO BETTER.Thoroughbred Breeders’ Chief Executive Tom Reilly
AFurther, it is clear that national compliance with the industry=s
system of data collection relating to the retirement of horses is
not working as it should. We will also be working with Racing
Australia, our owners and trainers, and other State racing
authorities to rectify this.@
Reilly said he too was appalled by the vision broadcast in the
ABC report.
AAll horses, whether thoroughbreds or not, deserve to be
treated humanely and with dignity. The full force of the law
should be brought down on anybody in the footage shown
mistreating those horses.
AThe thoroughbred industry needs a full and frank discussion
about what happens to horses when they leave the industry.
And while there is good work being done to rehome horses, we
have to look at how participants and regulators can and must do
better.
AWe also need to have confidence in the numbers the industry
publishes about what happens to animals when they leave
racing.@
Racing Australia said it shared the outrage at the horrific
images of the gross mistreatment of horses revealed in the ABC
programme.
AEach year, State and Territory racing authorities invest tens of
millions of dollars in integrity, veterinary services and equine
welfare programs to try and achieve the best possible outcomes
for horses,@ it said in a statement. ASince 2014, the sport=s
national body, Racing Australia, has introduced reforms to the
Australian Rules of Racing (ARR) to strengthen integrity and
equine welfare goals by ensuring authorities have access to the
ownership and location details of horses, from birth until their
retirement from racing.
AUnder the ARR, when a thoroughbred retires from racing, its
owners have an obligation to provide Racing Australia with the
reasons for the horse=s retirement, the name of the new owner
and the proposed new location of the horse.
AEach year Racing Australia=s annual report provides
information on the retirement of racehorses which, for the past
three years, reveals almost 90 per cent of thoroughbreds enter
the equestrian, pleasure or breeding sectors.
AOne per cent were listed as being sent to abattoirs. Any
subsequent changes in ownership or location of retired
thoroughbreds cannot be tracked as neither Racing Australia or
State or Territory racing authorities have the power or legal
ability to do so.
AOne of the reason=s Racing Australia supports the proposal for
a National Traceability Register for all horses is that it would
provide federal and state animal welfare authorities access to
ownership and location information for these thoroughbreds.@
Auction house Inglis has also condemned the actions of animal
mistreatment in the footage aired by the ABC.
AThe alleged vision shown was appalling and the abattoirs
involved need to be investigated as soon as possible and held to
account,@ it said in a statement.
AThe horse welfare programmes introduced by regulators
almost three years ago are a step in the right direction but need
to be better supported and enforced by all industry participants
and the general public who take possession of retired
racehorses and use them for a wide range of pursuits.
Proactive initiatives including re-homing programs are
fantastic, but clearly there is still a lot more work to do to keep
track of racehorses when they are retired.
AAs an auction house, Inglis sets a minimum bid price when we
offer horses for sale to help prevent horses that pass through
our operations from ending up in the wrong hands, and we do
not sell to abattoirs or allow any of their trucks onto our
property.
AWe have also supported a number of off the track projects
over the past few years, sponsoring thoroughbred classes to
encourage the broader uptake of thoroughbreds as equestrian
horses.
AWe also believe abattoirs and similar operations need to be
more diligently regulated by government to ensure they operate
humanely in relation to all animals.
AThe conduct of the alleged staff working in these facilities
shown on The 7.30 Report is totally unacceptable.@
