Dear Sacred Heart Family,

“Two men looked out from prison bars, one saw mud, the other stars” Frederick Langbridge “The Scales of Heaven”

This past weekend I went to Mass at Villa St. Joseph, the place where my dad spent his last few months. My sisters and I like to go there for sentimental reasons and to visit with the priest who has the same last name as my dad, Mahoney (my maiden name). It was the feast of the Epiphany and Fr. Mahoney began his sermon with the quote above. Then, he added how Pope Francis encouraged us to “look up” and see the stars. Pope Francis said, “Few people raise their eyes to heaven. We often make do with looking at the ground.”

I’ve been thinking about the quote and homily all week. As we return to school, I see the star qualities in our staff. I witness the bright sparkle in children’s eyes. I also see the fear of taking risks in academics and learning that accompanies children and parents as our students learn to take risks.

At Sacred Heart is it never an option to look down. We long for and incorporate newness in resources that assist our students in all ar-eas of their development. Our parish supports our endeavors with money and prayers.

If we want to truly live out our Catholic mission of finding the gifts and strengths in each child, we have to take risks. The Magi took the risk to simply meet a child. They dreamed, they longed to see the face of God-they never took their eyes off the star. We don’t either. We enter 2018 choosing to see each of your chil-dren as bright stars, stars made for greatness.

In the Triumph of God’s Great Love, PrincipalMaureen Engen

Sacred Heart Talent Show

Show us what you’ve got! Whether you can sing, dance, play an instrument, perform magic tricks, or if you have other talents you’re ready to present,

now’s your time to shine! As some of you have already noticed, the talent show is sneaking up on us again! Here are a few guidelines to help you decide if you would like to participate:

• All acts must be 2 minutes or less. • Each student can only be in 1 act. • Lip Syncing is not allowed. • If a student plans on singing, he/she must have music that consists of

only background music. (No songs with actual musician singing. The student cannot sing “on top of” the original musician.)

• No animals or adults are allowed in the act. • No parents allowed in the room during tryouts. We want to make sure

that all students are ready to perform independently. They’ll be great! • All music, lyrics, and costumes must be approved at tryouts. We are a

Catholic school and all songs, costumes, dances, etc. must be appropriate.

• Absolutely no additions will be made to the number of acts after January 22nd. Thank you for understanding.

Getting excited yet? Important mandatory dates for all students auditioning:

• Tues. January 16th : Permission slips (attached) due in the front office • Mon. January 22nd at 3:30pm : Try Outs in the Music Room and Gym

o All music, typed lyrics, and costumes must be approved. o We are limited to 30 acts. Tryouts will be your chance to show

the teachers that you have practiced and are ready to perform • Fri. February 2nd at 9:15am : Talent Show in Sacred Heart Gym

Get excited! This year’s show is sure to be a big hit! If you have any questions, don’t hesitate to contact Lauren Turner (4th Grade Teacher) at [email protected] or Katie Nelson (4th Grade Teacher) at [email protected] _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _

Rectory MealsThank you for supporting Fr. Pat & Fr. Dan in this beautiful act of service by providing them a meal twice a month. Due to our priests busy daily and evening schedules, we ask families to consider donat-ing gift cards to local restaurants which allows our priests great flexibility while trying to get lunch or dinner in between round-the-clock appointments and re-sponsibilities. More information can be found on the following sign-up genius. http://www.signupgenius.com/go/4090e-4faba62daaf49-201720182
