SINGING THE SCRIPTURES AT MASS You might notice — particularly at the 11:30 a.m. Mass — a Gregorian Chant at the very be-ginning of Mass prior to the processional hymn. This chant, called the “Introit,” simply means “entrance.” But its significance is far greater. These ancient melodies have been sung as far back to the sixth and seventh centuries. With specific chants prescribed for each Mass, they express an important element of scripture that prepare us spiritually for Mass. (The English translation can be found in the program.) Their otherworldly and ethereal tone is so unlike anything in our secular culture. This is a reminder to bring our mind and hearts away from the world and towards God. Such music also fills the 10 a.m. Latin Mass at the Cathedral. Furthermore, the Ethiopian Ge’ez Rite Mass at the Cathedral has its own ancient tradition of chant that fosters reverence and a profound sense of the sacred. At the Cathedral we have a special responsibility and charism. We are a parish, but at the same time the Mother Church of the Archdiocese of Boston. We welcome visitors far and wide every Sunday; we welcome many diverse communities and groups from all over the Archdiocese. Perhaps indicative of this welcoming diversity are Masses celebrated in four languages each and every Sunday at the Cathedral parish. As such, our sacred music at the Cathedral has a special obligation to be a liturgical model. In part this is to reaffirm our Roman Catholic identity! But more importantly, singing these scriptures each week transforms for the spirit. You’ll notice Communion Antiphons most eve-ry week at English Speaking Masses (and always at the Latin Mass). These chants most often point back to the Gospel. This marriage of sung scripture and the Eucharist is no accident; it is part of our ancient and rich Catholic tradition. Furthermore, when we sing the scriptures, we join ourselves to the generations of faith before us. Drawing heavily from the Psalms, the Mass connects us back thousands of years to our forebears in faith. While many generations have worshipped here at this Cathedral, we are a part of that and are connected. We are grateful for your presence. When you pray with us in this broad and eclec-tic community, you strengthen the parish. When you strengthen the Cathedral Parish, you strengthen the great people of the Archdiocese. We never know what burdens, grief, sorrows or joy people carry in their hearts as they enter the doors of this cathedral. Your prayer — sung, spoken, and in your hearts — uplifts us all. For this, we are all grateful! --Richard J. Clark, Archdiocesan and Cathedral Director of Music & Organist
